What is Trident?
Because the whole system will wear out sometime between 2025
and 2030.
At least eight, and possibly nine. They have around 16,000 nuclear
warheads between them.
There are already moves in that direction. But there are still many
people who do not realise that to start abolition negotiations is
perfectly possible. Many of the top people in countries with
nuclear weapons still think of them as status symbols or even as
useable weapons of war.
Recently, non-nuclear weapon states have taken the lead. 146
countries met in Mexico in February 2014 to discuss the
humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons. At their next
gathering in Vienna, they will begin discussing a ban treaty.
The British government has so far refused to attend these
meetings.
We must begin by telling the world now that we are not going to
replace our existing Trident system when it comes to the end of
its life AND that we want to see the start of international nuclear
weapon abolition negotiations immediately.
