Cut the cards. Distribute to students. Have them write suggestions for journal topics. theyd like to add to the list.

day. Share the topic and students name who submitted it. Have them respond to their classmates topics in their
journals.
Be certain theyre appropriate before reading their prompts. Names should not be used to protect the privacy of

SMALL GROUPS
ORAL DISCUSSIONS
CENTERS
JOURNALS
BRAINSTORM
Small groups of four - Give groups four, four different prompts. Set a time
limit of one or two minutes for them to respond orally to the prompts(one
at a time). After a minute is up, they rotate the cards. After theyve each
responded to all cards, have them discuss their responses.
#1 Use prompts as a filler at the end of a class. You read a prompt, and
volunteers respond orally.
#2. With the whole group have students pull cards, one at a time, from a
Prompt Jar (large wide mouth jar) and read them to the class. Have
volunteers respond to the prompt orally. Set a time limit for each response.
Oral responding is helpful for students who have difficulty getting their
responses on paper.
Keep a list of prompts at your writing center. Its a great year long activity.
Explain that only one prompt should be responded to each day.
Students paste cards (not laminated) in their daily journals and respond to
them. Use as morning work or for formal writing lessons.
#1 Have students brainstorm for other topics theyd like to add to my list.
Have them write their ideas on the blank cards provided, then put them in
the Prompt Jar. See page 28 for further instructions.
#2 Using the list of prompts provided, select one topic. Discuss the topic
orally with the whole group, then have them write their responses. Remind
students that everyone has a right to his or her opinion as some of them are
debate topics. This is a good way for students to get ideas from their
classmates.
RECORDING SHEET
Student instructions are on the sheet. The right hand side column shouldnt
be completed until a certain number of responses have been completed. It
all depends on the number of prompts youll do during the year.

Thank you for downloading my free journal prompts! I uploaded 210 free prompts to
TeachersPayTeachers.com, in 2009, and there has been an incredible response with over 60,000
teachers who have downloaded the packet and more downloads each day!
As a long time member of the TeachersPayTeachers teacher family its been a pleasure to share my lessons
and teaching resources, with other educators. Over the years, Ive spent thousands of dollars out of my own
pocket, for things I needed for my classroom. For that reason, I offer many reasonably priced and free products
on TpT that can be used year to year.
If you follow me on TpT, youll be notified when I upload new lessons, book packets and teaching resources.

HATCHET
STUDENT
WORKSHEE
TS -
Have you spent hours and hours creating worksheets for books that
your students read? I have! That's why I decided to share mine on TpT.
Hatchet. Gary Paulsens survivor story, captivates readers and keeps them
on the edges of their seats, as Brian encounters one life threatening
experience after another.
These self explanatory, student worksheets are designed to encourage
students to become actively engaged readers, through conversation and
collaboration with their peers..
Working in small groups and brainstorming, they determine the best
answers, as they cite information from the book. What better way to
create an atmosphere of higher level thinking! Analyzing text, as they
build on each others' responses, and articulating their own ideas, helps
them become self directed learners.
The worksheets can also be used as class or homework assignments. If
used as informal assessments it will help determine students strengths and
weaknesses.
A partial list of worksheets include: plot, setting, characters, connections,
essays, reflections, thought provoking questions, response to text, and
themes, differentiated activities that include student contests for writing
songs, poetry and more. There are vocabulary words and questions for
each chapter Great survival websites for kids are also included.
