EXPLORATORY/DRILLING ACTIVITIES
In January, 2005 seven (7) Oil Producing Companies namely; Mobil, Chevron, NAOC, ELF,
Pan Ocean, Addax and NPDC explored and drilled a total number of twenty five (25) wells.
Out of these wells nineteen (19) were development, four (4) were appraisals, while the
remaining two (2) were Work-over and Exploratory wells respectively.
Of these development wells, seven (7) were completed; five (5) were in drilling progress
while seven (7) were suspended due to community problems. Out of the four (4) appraisal
wells three (3) were abandoned, while one (1) was in drilling stage. Two (2) other wells
which were Work-over and exploratory, were in drilling progress. (See Table 1).

Liftings (Domestic and Export): The total Crude Oil and Condensates lifted for domestic
purposes and export in January, 2005 was 76,225,124 barrels, which averaged 2.459
barrels per day but only 74,456,221 barrels were produced. The balance of 1,768,903
barrels were taking from the stock. When compared with the total liftings figure of
75,918,112 barrels in December, 2004 the quantity (76,225,124 barrels) lifted in January,
2005 shows an increase of 307,012 barrels or 0.40%.
The Joint Venture, Production Sharing, Service Contract and Independent/Sole Risk Oil
Companies lifted 40,388,895 barrels or 52.99% of the total liftings for export. NNPC lifted
35,836,229 barrels or 47.01%. NNPC liftings were made up of 24,245,750 barrels exported
for Federation Account and 11,590,479 barrels for domestic consumptions. The domestic
allocation was made up of 5,983,056 barrels supplied to the local refineries and the
balance of 5,607,423 barrels were exported on behalf of PPMC. Out of the 40,388,895
barrels exported by the oil Producing Companies; JVCs exported 34,549,627 barrels or
45.33%, Addax, a PSC, exported 615,245 barrels or 0.81% and Agip Energy and Natural
Resources (AENR), a Service Contract Company exported 362,031 barrels or 0.47%. The
balance of 4,861,992 barrels or 6.38% were lifted for export by the Independent/Sole Risk
Oil Companies.
The lifting of NNPC was low when we consider the Production Sharing ratio of
NNPC/JVCs. This was due to JVC alternative funding crude oil production from shell,
Mobil and Elf in which the share of NNPC was very small (See Table 4)
2.3
Alternative Funding: In January 2005, 12,334,507 barrels were lifted by NNPC, Shell, Mobil
and Elf. The three Companies lifted 10,437,128 barrels or 84.62% while NNPC lifted
1,897,379 barrels or 15.38%. See table below for explanation.

Crude Oil Export by Destination: A total volume of 70,242,068 barrels of Crude Oil and Oso
condensate were exported in January, 2005 by both NNPC and Oil Producing Companies to
the five (5) regions of the world as follows: North America 34,701,552 barrels or 49.4%, Asia
and Far East 17,395,040 barrels or 24.76%; Europe 11,081,598 barrels or 15.78%; South
America 3,842,911 barrels or 5.47%. The remaining 3,220,967 barrels or 4.59% were
exported to some African Countries. (See Table 5).
2.5
Federation Account Crude Oil Export Receipts: A total volume of 24,245,750 barrels of
Crude Oil and Oso Condensate were exported in January, 2005 by NNPC at a realizable
income of US$1,062.496 million for Federation Account. The export sales reflected an
average weighted price of US$43.822 per barrel. When compared with the weighted
average of US$39.2016 per barrel for December, 2004, the January, 2005 weighted average
price shows an increase of US$4.62 or 11.79% on every barrel of Crude Oil and Oso
Condensate exported. (See Table 6a and figure 3a).

3.1
NATURAL GAS
Natural Gas Production and Utilization: In January, 2005, nine (9) Oil Producing companies
produced a total of 175.999 billion standard cubic Feet (BSCF) of natural gas. This shows
an increase of 1.304 Bscf or 0.75% when compared with 174.695 Bscf produced in
December, 2004. Out of the quantity produced, 67.618 Bscf or 38.42% was flared. The
balance of 108.380 Bscf or 61.58% was utilized as follows; 44.115 Bscf or 25.07% was sold
to third parties including NGC; 36.309 Bscf or 20.63% was re-injected; 17,866 Bscf or
10.15% was meant for LNG sales; 1.668 Bscf or 0.95% and 0.943 Bscf or 0.54% was sold to
EPCL as LPG/NGL feedstock and fuel gas respectively. The Oil Producing Companies
used 6.586 Bscf or 3.73% as fuel gas and 0.913 Bscf or 0.52% as Gas lift to enhance
condensate production. (See Table 7).
3.2
Federal Government Receipts from Gas Export: The sum of US$8.965 million was realized
from export sale of 26,251 metric ton of NGL from Mobil by NNPC on behalf of Federal
Government.
The sale represents Federal Government Equity share in Mobil Joint
Ventureship. Similarly, a total sum of US$19.114 million was realized from the export
sales of 30.369 million BTU of LNG feedstock. The sale represent Federal Government
Equity shares in Shell, Elf and NAOC Joint Ventureship. A total sum of US$28.079 million
was realized from Gas export sales. (See table 6b and figure 3b).
3.3
Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) Gas Sales and Transmission: A total volume of 15.8072
Billion Standard Cubic Feet (BSCF) of natural Gas was sold at a realizable price of N724.66
million in January, 2005. However, actual revenue received was N681.002 million. This
revenue was part of January, 2005 and previous months outstanding debts.
The Company also transmitted 0.3222 Mscf of natural gas to third parties at a realizable
revenue of N22.020 million. The actual revenue received from gas transmission in
January, 2005 was N10.290 million. The amount includes outstanding revenue of the
previous months. (See Table 8a and 8b).
3.4
Joint Venture Domestic/Export Gas Sales: Shell Petroleum Development company (SPDC)
sold 11.256 Billion Standard Cubic Feet of Gas for N146.825 million as a Joint Venture
sales (NNPC 55%, shell 30%, Elf 10% and NAOC 5%). (See Table 9a).
3.5
Joint Venture Export Gas Sales: SPDC sold 30.820 BSCF of natural gas as feedstock to
NLNG at a sum of US$19.445 million (See Table 9b).
4.0
REFINERY OPERATIONS
4.1
Crude Oil Balance: The three local refineries (KRPC, PHRC and WRPC) had 327,227 mt of
crude oil as opening stock and received 902,136 mt of crude oil into their systems during
the month of January 2005. The total available crude oil, therefore, stood at 1,229,363 mt.
Out of this, 757,147 mt of crude oil was processed into petroleum products. The closing
stock at the end of the month was 472,216 mt of crude oil. The average throughput for
each refinery in metric tons per day was: KRPC 5,950; PHRC 10,861; and WRPC
7,613 (see Table 10); thus leaving their respective capacity utilization for the month as
39.66%, 37.86% and 45.07% respectively. (See figure 5).
4.2 Production Returns: The three (3) refineries KRPC, PHRC and WRPC produced 693,550 mt of
intermediate and finished products as against a volume of 802,238mt evacuated by PPMC.
(See Table 13).
4.3
Refinery Fuel and Loss: The three (3) refineries recorded 62,734 mt of products as
refinery fuel and loss, which was 8.29% of the total refineries production. Out of this
refinery fuel and loss statistics, 53,441 mt (7.06%) was used as fuel, while 1,940 mt (0.26%)
was flared. The remaining 7,353 mt (0.97%) was recorded as losses (See Table 14).
