5. RESPONSIBILITIES
The QA/QC Manager is responsible for monitoring and implementing the following activities:
Establishing the calibration schedule for all equipment included in the system.
Keeping a record of all calibrated instruments.
Ensuring that instruments are calibrated at all times during the work.
Storage of calibration instruments, which are defined as secondary "MASTER".
Master instruments are generally stored in a locked-up cabinet under the control of the QA/QC
Manager. Particularly, over-sized instruments shall be kept at adequate areas and/or in proper
containers.
The above mentioned activities shall be carried on by the QA/QC Department together with
the department that uses the instrument.

6. PROCEDURE
6.1.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Instruments and/or devices having appropriate calibration certificates can be utilised within the
expiry period. After the expiry dates, the calibration of these instruments and/or devices should
be calibrated.
The present procedure is applicable to instruments that require to be calibrated periodically,
such as pressure gages, hardness testers, paint thickness gages, optical measurement
devices, etc.
Calibration intervals for these instruments and/or devices are given in Attachment 1 according
to T.4.096.674 Calibration of Testing and Measuring Tools and Equipment.

6.2.

IDENTIFICATION OF INSTRUMENTS

Each instrument that is subject to calibration shall be identified by a serial number.

a)

This serial number will be placed on the instrument by such means that shall provide
durable identification. All inspection, measuring and test instruments with missing or
illegible serial numbers shall be re-calibrated prior to their use.

b)

All inspection, measuring and test instruments that are employed for the inspection or
acceptance of the construction work shall be marked with utilising stickers or tags, which
shall enable immediate visual confirmation of its calibration status.

CALIBRATION OF INSTRUMENTS

Instruments subject to calibration shall be calibrated on the following occasions:

6.3.1.

Periodic Calibration

This calibration will be carried out before the defined expiry dates by the QA/QC
personnel or by a calibration service or agency under the control of the QA/QC
Department.

6.3.2.

Re-calibration

The instruments may be re-calibrated at any time before the expiry date of the calibration
if there are doubts as to the accuracy of the equipment.

6.4.

PRECISION OF CALIBRATION

The precision of the calibration shall be defined by the QA/QC Department in accordance with
the class of precision stated by the manufacturer of the instrument.

6.5.

METHOD OF CALIBRATION

The calibration of the devices shall be carried out according to the manufacturer instructions.
In case of the calibration procedure and/or instruction of the device manufacturer is not
available, then one of the following procedures shall apply:
a)

Calibration against MASTER devices,

Master devices shall possess the manufacturers certificates.
All primary "MASTER" instruments (2nd level) shall undergo calibration at predetermined
periods depending on their characteristics and tendency to lose calibration. Secondary
instruments (3rd level) shall be calibrated by comparison with the Masters.

b)

Calibration Control by direct measurement,

Where and when applicable, the measuring devices shall be calibrated by direct
measurement with appropriate and acceptable measuring methods. Measurements shall
be carried out with certified devices.
During the controls, if the device has calibration means, then it will be calibrated,
supported with an appropriate measurement record.

c)

Calibration by an authorised institute,

Calibration of the sophisticated devices, including optical measuring devices shall only
be carried out by an authorised institute.

DOCUMENTATION OF CALIBRATION

A "control list" will be compiled for the measuring and test equipment and shall give the
relevant data.
The calibration label (Attachment 2) of the calibrated equipment shall indicate the acceptance
of the calibration. When this labelling is neither practical nor considered essential for the
control purposes, other procedures shall be established to ensure the conformity with this
requirement. Any other procedure shall be in compliance with the requirements of related
specifications and subject to approval.
Prior to use of any inspection, measuring and test instrument for the construction work, the
responsible engineer shall assure that the effective calibration period of the device has not yet
expired and the instrument has not been damaged to a visible degree.
