Why Check for Students

Understanding?
Relevance, Purpose and Familiar Methods

Checking for Understanding:

Relevance and Purpose
immediate feedback on what they know and do NOT
know YET: self-awareness for the students
gives the message that the context and thinking of all
students are necessary for the success of the lesson
..provides the teacher with a decision-making point:
do I need to further scaffold this learner's
understanding?. (Fisher and Frey, Guided
Instruction, 2010)*
