Therehavebeenseveralstudiesexaminingcastemembersasdiscretepopulations,examiningthehypothesisthattheirancestorshave
differentorigins.A200203studybyT.Kivisildetal.ConcludedthattheIndiantribalandcastepopulationsderivelargelyfromthe
samegeneticheritageofPleistocenesouthernandwesternAsiansandhavereceivedlimitedgeneflowfromexternalregionssincethe
Holocene.StudiespointtothevariousIndiancastegroupshavingsimilargeneticoriginsandhavingnegligiblegeneticinputfrom
outsidesouthAsia.However,a2001geneticstudy,ledbyMichaelBamshadoftheUniversityofUtah,foundthattheaffinityofIndians
toEuropeansisproportionatetocasterank,theuppercastesbeingmostsimilartoEuropeans.TheresearchersbelievethattheIndo
AryansenteredIndiafromtheNorthwestandmayhaveestablishedacastesystem,inwhichtheyplacedthemselvesprimarilyinhigher
castes."BecausetheIndiansamplesforthisstudyweretakenfromasinglegeographicalarea,itremainstobeinvestigatedwhetherits
findingscanbesafelygeneralized.
Anearlier1995studybyJoannaL.Mountainetal.OfStanfordUniversityhadconcludedthattherewasnoclearseparationintothree
geneticallydistinctgroupsalongcastelinesalthoughaninferredtreerevealedsomeclusteringaccordingtocasteaffiliationA2006
studybyIsmailThanseemetal.OfCentreforCellularandMolecularBiology(India)concludedthatthelowercastegroupsmighthave
originatedwiththehierarchicaldivisionsthatarosewithinthetribalgroupswiththespreadofNeolithicagriculturalists,muchearlier
thanthearrivalofAryanspeakersandtheIndoEuropeansestablishedthemselvesasuppercastesamongthisalreadydeveloped
castelikeclassstructurewithinthetribes.ThestudyindicatedthattheIndiancastesystemmayhaveitsrootsmuchbeforethearrival
oftheIndoAryansarudimentaryversionofthecastesystemmayhaveemergedwiththeshifttowardscultivationandsettlements,
andthedivisionsmayhavebecomemorewelldefinedandintensifiedwiththearrivalofIndoAryans.
A2006geneticstudybytheNationalInstituteofBiologicalsinIndia,testingasampleofmenfrom32tribaland45castegroups,
concludedthattheIndianshaveacquiredveryfewgenesfromIndoEuropeanspeakers.Morerecentstudieshavealsodebunkedthe
BritishclaimsthatsocalledAryansandDravidianshavearacialdivideAstudyconductedbytheCentreforCellularandMolecular
Biologyin2009(incollaborationwithHarvardMedicalSchool,HarvardSchoolofPublicHealthandtheBroadInstituteofHarvardand
MIT)analyzedhalfamilliongeneticmarkersacrossthegenomesof132individualsfrom25ethnicgroupsfrom13statesinIndiaacross
multiplecastegroups.Thestudyestablishes,basedontheimpossibilityofidentifyinganygeneticindicatorsacrosscastelines,that
castesinSouthAsiagrewoutoftraditionaltribalorganizationsduringtheformationofIndiansociety,andwasnottheproductofany
AryanInvasionandsubjugationofDravidianpeople.
