mains in circuit as shown. The bulb glows with some brightness. How will the glow of the
bulb change if (i) a dielectric slab is introduced between the plates of the capacitor,

capacitance?

hinged at the centre and the other end at the circumference of a circular metallic
ring of radius L, about an axis passing through the centre and perpendicular to

and the metallic ring.

(b) Define the quality factor in an a.c. circuit. Why should the quality factor have
high value in receiving circuits? Name the factors on which it depends.
14. The currents flowing in the two coils of self-inductance L 1 = 16 mH and L2 = 12
mH are increasing at the same rate. If the power supplied to the two coils are
equal, find the ratio of (i) induced voltages, (ii) the currents and (iii) the energies
stored in the two coils at a given instant.

15. (a) State the principle of a step-up transformer. Explain, with the help of a labeled
diagram, its working.

(b) A step-up transformer converts a low voltage into high voltage. Does it not violate
the principle of conservation of energy? Explain.

Describe briefly and two energy losses, giving the reasons for their occurrence in
actual transformers.
