THE ORDER OF WORSHIP

The Feast of the Holy Trinity

May 30th and 31st 2015

Holy Communion (ELW I)

PRELUDE O Lux Beata Trinitas (O Trinity of Blessed Light)

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck
WELCOME
INVOCATION

INTRODUCTION
When we say God is the triune God, we are saying something about who
God is beyond, before, and after the universe: that there is community
within God. Our experience of this is reflected in Paul's words today. When
we pray to God as Jesus prayed to his Abba (an everyday, intimate parental
address), the Spirit prays within us, creating between us and God the same
relationship Jesus has with the one who sent him.
Visit of Mary to Elizabeth
This festival marks the occasion when Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visited
her cousin Elizabeth who was herself pregnant with John. Elizabeth
pronounced Mary "blessed among women," and Mary responded with the
song called the Magnificat.
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
Most High God, whom the heavens cannot contain, we give you thanks for
the gifts of those who have built this house of prayer to your glory; we
praise you for the fellowship of those who by their use have made it holy;
and we pray that all who seek you here may find you and be filled with joy
and peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN
FIRST READING:

Isaiah 6:18

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the LORD sitting on a throne, high

and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. 2Seraphs were in
attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their
faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3And
one called to another and said:
"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory."
4
The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and
the house filled with smoke. 5And I said: "Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a
man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes
have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!"
6
Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had
been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7The seraph touched my
mouth with it and said: "Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has
departed and your sin is blotted out." 8Then I heard the voice of the LORD
saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am
I; send me!"
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
PSALM 29
Refrain:

Refrain:

Tone:

The voice of the LORD breaks the | cedar trees;

the LORD breaks the ce- | dars of Lebanon;
6
the LORD makes Lebanon skip | like a calf,
and Mount Hermon like a | young wild ox.
7
The voice | of the LORD
bursts forth in | lightning flashes.
8
The voice of the LORD | shakes the wilderness;
the LORD shakes the wilder- | ness of Kadesh. R
9

The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe

and strips the | forests bare.
And in the temple of the LORD all are | crying, "Glory!"
10
The LORD sits enthroned a- | bove the flood;
the LORD sits enthroned as king for- | evermore.
11
O LORD, give strength | to your people;
give them, O LORD, the bless- | ings of peace. R
SECOND READING: Romans 8:1217

Tone:
12

Ascribe to the | LORD, you gods,

ascribe to the LORD glo- | ry and strength.
2
Ascribe to the LORD the glory | due God's name;
worship the LORD in the beau- | ty of holiness.
3
The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of | glory thunders;
the LORD is upon the | mighty waters.
4
The voice of the LORD is a pow- | erful voice;
the voice of the LORD is a | voice of splendor. R

So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live
according to the flesh 13for if you live according to the flesh, you will
die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
14
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15For you
did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have
received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" 16it is that very
Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if
children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if, in fact,
we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Please stand for the reading of the gospel.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14And just as Moses
lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
15
that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
16
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that
everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
17
Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the
world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
Please be seated.

GOSPEL: John 3:1-17

The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord.
Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. 2He
came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a
teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do
apart from the presence of God." 3Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell
you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above."
4
Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be born after having grown old?
Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?" 5Jesus
answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God
without being born of water and Spirit. 6What is born of the flesh is flesh,
and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Do not be astonished that I said to
you, 'You must be born from above.' 8The wind blows where it chooses,
and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or
where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."
9
Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?" 10Jesus answered him,
"Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?
11
Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to
what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. 12If I have told
you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I
tell you about heavenly things? 13No one has ascended into heaven except

AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM
Dear friends, we give thanks for the gift of baptism and for Jeff Forney,
already one with us in the body of Christ, who a making public affirmation
of his baptism.
A sponsor or another representative of the congregation presents those
making affirmation.
I present Jeff Forney who desires to make public affirmation of his baptism.
The presiding minister may continue with prayer.
Let us pray.

Merciful God, we thank you for this brother whom you have made your
own by water and the Word in baptism. You have called him to yourself,
enlightened him with the gifts of your Spirit, and nourished him in the
community of faith. Uphold your servant in the gifts and promises of
baptism, and unite the hearts of all whom you have brought to new birth.
We ask this in the name of Christ.
Amen.
I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the
faith of the church.
Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God?
Response:
I renounce them.
Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God?
Response:
I renounce them.
Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God?
Response:
I renounce them.
The presiding minister addresses the candidates and the assembly.
Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and
the dead.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting. Amen.
THE PRAYERS

Let us pray for Jeff, who is affirming his Baptism, and for all the baptized
everywhere:
Each petition ends with:
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in
your mercy, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The presiding minister addresses those making public affirmation of
baptism.
You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue
in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism:
to live among God's faithful people,
to hear the word of God and share in the Lord's supper,
to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed,
to serve all people, following the example of Jesus,
and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?
Response:
I do, and I ask God to help and guide me.
The minister addresses the assembly.
People of God, do you promise to support this brother and pray for him in
his life in Christ?
We do, and we ask God to help and guide us.
The presiding minister prays for God's blessing.
Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy
Spirit you give us new birth, cleanse us from sin, and raise us to eternal life.
The minister may lay both hands on the head of the person and say:
Stir up in Jeff the gift of your Holy Spirit:
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord,
the spirit of joy in your presence,
both now and forever. Amen.
Those making public affirmation stand and face the assembly. A
representative of the congregation addresses the assembly.

Let us rejoice with these sisters and brothers in Christ.

We rejoice with you in the life of baptism.
Together we will give thanks and praise to God
and proclaim the good news to all the world.
Please rise and greet one another in the peace of the risen Christ.
PEACE

Let us pray.
Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you shower
us with blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad
and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to those in need,
through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
DIALOGUE

The peace of Christ be with you always.

And also with you.
Please be seated.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Wednesday, June 3 John XXIII, Bishop of Rome, died 1963

Vatican Council which helped bring great changes to Roman Catholic and
other churches.
Wednesday, June 3 The Martyrs of Uganda, died 1886
On June 3, 1886, thirty-two young men were burned to death for refusing to
renounce Christianity. The confident manner in which these Christians went
to their deaths contributed to a much stronger Christian presence in
Uganda.
Friday, June 5
Boniface, Bishop of Mainz, missionary to Germany, martyr, died 754
Boniface was a native of England who became a Benedictine monk and
was called to missionary work among the Vandal tribes of Germany. With

reform the church.
Sunday, June 7
Seattle, chief of the Duwamish Confederacy, died 1866
