70 years of honoring veterans on Memorial Day

Kirkwood Memorial Day Parade, ceremony mark milestone in remembering those who made ultimate sacrifice
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
It was a day 70 years in the
making when the 70th annual
Kirkwood Memorial Day Parade
and ceremony were held on Memorial Day to commemorate not
just those who gave their lives defending the United States these
past 70 years, but throughout the
nations history.
Residents, members of the police and fire departments, emergency medical services, clergy,
community organizations, elected officials and more gathered
near the war memorial on Burnt
Mill Road adjacent to the Kirkwood Fire Station to memorialize
those who made what several of
the days speakers noted as the
ultimate sacrifice.
One such speaker was Mayor
Michael Mignogna, who spoke
about how Memorial Day falls
around a time of year when many
families are creating lasting
memories, whether it be through
proms, high school and college
graduations, weddings, childrens
sporting events or family vacations.
Mignogna said those who lost
their lives defending America
gave up those opportunities to
make such memories, and so
those who remain must use Memorial Day to honor that sacri-

fice.
Memorial Day is a day to
honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us, those who
gave their lives so we could enjoy
those times, Mignogna said.
Also to speak at the ceremony
were 6th Legislative District representatives
Assemblywoman
Pam Lampitt and Assemblyman
Lou Greenwald.
In addition to being able to attend several Memorial Day cere-

monies throughout the county,

Lampitt said the day was also special for her because she was there
to share the ceremony with her
father-in-law
and
recent
Voorhees resident, Retired Army
Command Sgt. Maj. Gordon
Lampitt.
Lampitt said she wasnt born
into a military family, but having
married into one, she learned
about love, compassion, the word
we, the word commitment

and banding together to support

one another.
She said those values were true
of many families that serve in the
military, and for those who have
family members who lost their
lives, their sacrifices must be
honored.
We need to remember them,
Lampitt said. Its with that sort
of love and commitment that
their families have given to us
and we have given to them, thats

why were here today.

Greenwald, who has lived in
Voorhees for 17 years and raised
all three of his children in the
community, spoke of traveling to
the different Memorial Day ceremonies and seeing a woman with
a young daughter whose father is
serving in Afghanistan.
There are families that every
day are sacrificing something
very special so that these freedoms that are so cherished to us,
we have an opportunity to enjoy,
Greenwald said.
Those who laid wreaths at the
memorial included the Voorhees
Fire District, Voorhees Career
Firefighters and EMTs, Gibbsboro Fire Company, Voorhees
Township Police, Voorhees Township Committee, Voorhees Democrat Club, Voorhees Junior Girl
Scout Troop 30034, Cub Scout
Pack 127, Boy Scout Troop 127,
Veterans of Yardley Commons,
South Jersey Vietnam Vets, Solid
Rock Baptist Church, Voorhees
Township Cultural Diversity Advisory Committee and several
families.
Toward the closing of the ceremony, the Gibbsboro American
Legion Post 371 provided a gun
salute, and the Kirkwood Memorial Day Parade Committee
thanked the Vandegrift family for
their help in organizing and sponsoring the event.

Library system unveils

summer reading themes
Voorhees branch hosts kick off June 19
The Camden County Library
System joins libraries across New
Jersey in offering 2015 summer
reading programs based on the
themes Every Hero Has a Story
for children and Unmask for
teens and tweens.
Participants can register online or at their local branch and
pick up a reading log to track all
they read during the summer or
everything read to the youngest
children. Report the hours and titles read to one of the librarys
eight branches to earn incentives
and chances to win larger prizes
at the local branch.
Enrolling children and encouraging teens and tweens to join the
program are great ways to maintain and even sharpen reading
skills over summer vacation. Registration dates for the programs

vary by branch. Call the local

branch to find out details.
The librarys different locations, including Voorhees, will be
offering special programs based
on the superhero themes during
the summer.
Voorhees kicks off sevenweeks of summer reading on Friday, June 19, 6:30 p.m., with Super
Hero Training Camp.
The summer reading programs offered at our libraries
help to keep your children engaged in reading and learning
over the summer break. I encourage every parent to take advantage of these programs and all
that our libraries have to offer
residents, said Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to
the Camden County Library System.

Committee certifies 2014

annual audit at May 26 meeting
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
The Voorhees Township Committee went from the fun of the
Memorial Day holiday last Monday to the fun of dealing with the
townships annual financial audit
last Tuesday at its May 26 meeting.
Each year, the state requires
municipal governing bodies to
make an annual audit of accounts, books and other financial
transactions.
The auditors come in and we
have auditors here for a few
months and they go through all
the contracts and all the bills and
all the money spent, Township
Manager Larry Spellman said.
As of the May 26 meeting, the
committee certified the 2014
audit, and, according to Spell-

man, there were no material findings.

I always feel much better
knowing theres someone to come
through and theres no mistakes
and everything is where it should
be, Spellman said.
In other news:
Committeeman Michael
Friedman was appointed as a
deputy mayor for the limited duration of July 1 through July 31.
Friedman requested the appointment to officiate a wedding ceremony.
Under state law, only municipal mayors and deputy mayors,
not simply committee or council
members, can authorize marriages and civil unions.
Committee endorsed the submission of the 2014 Recycling
Tonnage Grant application to the
state. The grant program allows

municipalities to apply for grants

based on the total amount of recycled tonnage that was collected
from residents and business
throughout the year.
Any money received from the
grant can then be used to fund
further recycling efforts in the
municipality.
We submit every year and we
get funds back for what we recycle, Spellman said. I think by
population, were the largest recycling (town) in the county.
Committee approved a developers agreement for Aquatic
Holdings, LLC. According to
Spellman, Aquatic Holdings is
partnering with the former Coliseum complex on Preston Avenue
to build a new pool.
Committee awarded a bid to

Put down the gas pump: Legislators say no to self-service at gas stations
here arent too many times
when youll read a pro-government-restriction opinion in
this space. As you can probably tell by
our previous diatribes, we mostly
stand for free enterprise without restrictions.
But today, we are in a nutty mood.
Were all for keeping government restrictions in place, at least at the gas
pump.
Last week, state legislators put a
swift halt to a potential proposal to lift
New Jerseys gas-pumping restrictions and allow drivers to pump their
own gas at the station, and we like
what our elected officials have done in
this case for once.
New Jersey has banned self service
at gas stations for almost 70 years, and
we see no reason to change that now.

Your thoughts
What do you think about New Jerseys
ban on self-service gas stations? Share
your thoughts on this, and other topics,
through a letter to the editor.

Sure, as many people have argued,

having attendants pump our gas for us
is in New Jersey culture. Its part of
who we are spoiled people who dont
have to brave the heat, the cold, the
rain, the wind or the snow to re-fill our
gas-guzzling automobiles.
Sure, its nice to have a gas attendant pump our gas and provide an
extra level of security when we need
to fill up on a not-so-crowded road at 4
in the morning when were avoiding
Shore traffic on a holiday weekend.
But the biggest reason we believe

New Jersey shouldnt lift the restrictions on pumping gas is because it

would cost a lot of people a job.
There are thousands of people in
New Jersey who have a job pumping
gas. Even if its not a high-paying job,
it still provides necessary income for
those workers. Lift the ban, and these
people will instantly be out of a job.
If allowing self-service gas pumping
would significantly reduce prices at
the pump, then our stance might be
different. But estimates say the switch
would only save a few cents per gallon,
which means the real winners would
be the gas station owners not the
drivers.
So thumbs up to the recent decision
to not lift the government restriction.
It might be the last time you read
those words in this space.

Shop Voorhees program saves taxpayers money

In October 2013, Voorhees Township became the first municipality in South Jersey to introduce the Shop Voorhees Property Tax Reward Program. This program allows a portion of your normal purchasing
dollars spent on goods and services in
Voorhees to be applied to your property tax
bill, thereby reducing your taxes at the end
of the tax year. We have 51 businesses and
more than 6,100 residents participating in
the program, and the numbers continue to
grow.
On May 5, the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at the John
F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, recognized the Property
Tax Reward Program as a Top 25 program
in this years Innovations in American
Government Awards competition. These
government initiatives represent the dedicated efforts of city, state and federal gov-

ernments, and address such policy

issues as economic
development, environmental
and
community revitalization,
public
health, equal access to education,
emergency
preparedness
and
health care. These
programs were selected by a cohort
of policy experts,
Michael
researchers and
Mignogna
practitioners.
The property MAYORS MESSAGE

Townships Shop Marlboro! Shop Local

purchases at local businesses registered in
the program result in a property tax credit

amount. The reward percentage is determined by the merchant at the time of business registration. The Property Tax Reward Program is being operated by 11
townships in New Jersey (Marlboro, Hillsborough, Voorhees, West Orange, Glassboro, Bayonne, Pequannock, Vernon,
Brick, Manalapan and Somerdale). The
number of municipalities implementing
this program is expected to increase

Camden County is
on the rise
By Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr.
Summer
is
around the corner,
little leagues are
in full swing and
the sound of construction equipment can be heard
throughout
the
county. This May
marked the second
full year of operation of the Camden County Police Department, which came
with significant accolades. Just
last month the new law enforcement agency was visited by the
President of the United States
and the U.S. Department of Justice for the work being done
within the city. Our officers got
to tell the leader of the free world
how they build bridges and relationships in communities and
President Barack Obama held
the department up as a national
model during a major policy announcement at the Kroc Center.
So far in 2015, about 400 police
officers have been focusing on
human contact and fostering a
dialogue with residents in the
city to reduce crime. As I write
this, violent crime is down another 20 percent from the same
time in 2014 and we have cut
homicides in half from the same
time last year. In other words,
the departments strategic initiatives have made an impact
and continue to foster community within Camdens 21 neighborhoods.
Moving forward - knowing that
the citys population is very
young - our commitment has
been to engage the youth in their
schools, churches and community centers in active programming. Police officers read to
kindergarteners in Whitman
Park, they have a buddy system
in Centerville and play regular
basketball games in the Water-

front South neighborhood against

teams from all over
the citys ninesquare miles. Furthermore, I would
be remiss if I didnt
point out a new
g roundbreaking
task force Project
Guardian made up
of federal, state and local law
enforcement partners to intervene with kids before they become full-fledged gang members.
That said, the changes we collectively have made are far from
over and this is a long-term project that will create significant
dividends for the community if
we stay the course. Since the city
has been made safer the largest
investment dollars and economic development in the nation have landed in Camden.
Make no mistake without the
work of the men and women in
uniform and their civilian counterparts, none of this would be
possible.
Today, we still have significant
social inequities to address, including the grinding poverty
that inhabits several neighborhoods in the city. That said, with
real job training and growing
economic opportunities for the
city and the county we can make
an impact at remedying those issues. In short we have come a
long way in two years, but there
is still a tremendous amount of
work to be done.

Prescription Drug Drop Boxes

now located throughout county
Prescription Drug Drop Boxes
are now located across Camden
County to provide residents with
a free and anonymous way to dispose of unwanted prescription
drugs. The Camden County Addiction Awareness Task Force
provides a list of drop box locations on their website www.addictions.camdencounty.com to prevent these potentially dangerous
expired and unused prescription
drugs to fall into the wrong
hands.
Everyone should check their
medicine cabinet for unwanted
prescription drugs that expire
and become permanent fixtures
in bathrooms throughout the
county. Freehold Director Louis
Cappelli, Jr said. We recognize
the importance of having a safe
and legal way to dispose of these
substances, and are working in

cooperation with every municipality in Camden County to identify drop-off sites.

Last year, Americans turned
in more than 300 tons of unwanted prescription drugs at more
than 5,400 drop-off sites across
the country. The take-back program addresses a vital public
safety and public health issue.
Medicines that languish in home
cabinets are highly susceptible to
diversion, misuse and abuse.
Rates of prescription drug abuse
in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as
are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to
these drugs.
In addition, Americans are
now advised that their usual
methods for disposing of unused
medicines flushing them down
the toilet or throwing them in the
trash both pose potential safety

and health hazards.

As a mother, educator and
elected official, the addiction crisis in Camden County is one of
my biggest concerns. Prescription drugs have become the No. 1
abused substance by young people because they are accessible
and go fairly undetected. said
Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Camden County
Health Department.
Studies
show that a majority of abused
prescription drugs are obtained
from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. Parents and grandparents
become the unwitting supplier of
these dangerous substances.
In addition, the Camden County Health Department always reminds residents to keep their prescriptions safe and locked away.
Having a secure place for storage
of these medications is an important issue in order to keep them
out of the hands of children so
they are not abused.
If a member of the public or a
loved one needs help please call
the 24/7 toll-free confidential hotline for addiction help at (877) 2668222.
In Voorhees, unwanted prescriptions may be disposed at the
Voorhees Police Department, 1180
White Horse Road.
Check the Camden County Addiction Awareness Task Force
website for additional locations
that will be added in the coming
months.
