UVU Percussion Auditions Fall 2014 Friday, August 22 10:00 am GT 416 Doug Smith Percussion Coordinator douglas.smith@uvu.edu Percussion Audition Tips Play musically! The audition panel should be able to recognize the piece even when you are playing the snare drum. Listen to recordings of top professional ensembles with great conductors and percussionists (US Marine Band, New York Philharmonic, St Louis Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Symphony, Cleveland Symphony, etc.). Youtube is a good place to start. Listen to several recordings to compare tempi and interpretations. 100% note and rhythmic accuracy is your goal. Practice with a metronome. Practice slowly. Carry yourself with a professional demeanor. Set-up your sticks and mallets quickly so that you may move through the audition efficiently. Drink plenty of water, eat something healthy (bananas may act as a natural beta blocker to help calm nerves), and sleep well the night before. Relax, have fun, and play the music. Eager beavers: Percussion auditions are always the Friday before classes start. We are going to standardize the time at 10a in GT 416. Drum set auditions will be in a combo format with bass, guitar, and piano the first ‘Tuesday of classes at 2:30p in GT 416. Percussion Audition Rep for the fall is as follows (taken from the New World Symphony audition list (which also serves as the menu for the Utah Day of Percussion Mock Audition)) Marimba 2min excerpt of a Bach solo of your choice (2 or 4 mallets) Xylo Kodaly: Hary Janos Suite (Mvt.
