Introduction
Ohio Brass offers a full line of polymer arresters for
distribution voltages. The PVR targets cable applications where low discharge voltages promote longer
cable life. The PDV-100 is a heavy duty arrester made
for overhead distribution equipment protection. The
PDV-65 offers cost effective lightning performance with
only slightly lower capabilities.
These arresters combine the advantages of a polymer
housing and metal-oxide varistor valve blocks. On the
following pages are descriptions of the benefits, design
test reports and arrester accessories.
PDV/PVR arresters join an impressive list of advances
that Ohio Brass has brought to arrester technology
since it began making arresters in 1950. Improvements
in design have increased protective margins and
durability. More important in terms of dollars and
service reliability, Ohio Brass arresters have enabled
equipment manufacturers to lower insulation levels and
saved millions of dollars for power companies.

PDV-100 and PDV-65 Distribution

Surge Arresters
The PDV-100 arrester was introduced in 1986 as the first
U.S. non-ceramic arrester for heavy duty applications. The
Ohio Brass Company then expanded its line of polymerhoused distribution arresters with a normal duty PDV-65 and
PVR arrester.
The polymer housing on these arresters offers many benefits
never before available. For example, the arrester virtually
eliminates the opportunity for damage from mishandling in
packing, shipping and installation. Because the PDV does not
have an internal atmosphere, failure from breathing or
pumping moisture through minute cracks or other imperfections is also eliminated.
The application of system overvoltage, above arrester design
limits, may result in failure as with all arresters. The housing
splits or tears in contrast to the potentially violent failure
mode of porcelain into many sharp fragments. The potential
danger to nearby equipment and personnel is reduced
drastically.
The PDV/PVR arresters have the same high-quality metaloxide varistor material used in other Ohio Brass DynaVar
station, intermediate and distribution arresters which have
operated successfully for over 15 years. PDV/PVR have all
the gapless MOV advantages such as high temporary
overvoltage capability, contamination resistance, improved
surge-duty capability and excellent protective characteristics.

Alloy ESP Housing

The PDV/PVR arrester housing is made from the same ESP
rubber material used in high voltage insulators. The ESP
housing resists tracking from surface leakage currents.
Leakage distance is exceptional.
In addition to the performance record as an insulator material,
ESPs excellent properties have been confirmed in a series of
performance tests that include tracking resistance, contamination, aging and seal design. As with polymer insulators,
polymer arresters have high cantilever and tensile strengths.

Basic Construction

The polymer-housed arrester can be used with all standard

mounting arms and brackets. They come with all the necessary fasteners, isolators and terminal attachments. A specially designed glass-filled polyester insulating arm extends
from the arrester to the NEMA crossarm bracket, eliminating
the need for installation of a metal clamping band around the
arrester. The insulating arm not only eliminates the rust and
corrosion sometimes encountered with a metal clamping
band, but also has been treated with an inhibitor to resist
ultraviolet damage.

Benefits
The PDV/PVR housing material excels in tolerance to
weather extremes from desert heat to arctic cold, and resists
damage from ultraviolet rays and ozone. Samples of the
polymer have survived the equivalent of over 50 years of
accelerated ultraviolet testing.
If the PDV/PVR arresters are dropped or otherwise mishandled, there is little risk of damage, in contrast to the
brittleness of porcelain. Internal parts cannot move. The risk
of vandalism is reduced. A bullet can penetrate the housing,
causing arrester failure. But polymer does not shatter as does
porcelain, which scatters sharp fragments.
A PDV/PVR arrester weighs less than its porcelain counterpart, again making it easier to handle and less costly to ship.
The PDV/PVR arresters are suitable for a number of different
applications, such as transformer mounting, enclosed in
switchgear or underhung in line protection applications.
As non-ceramic arresters, the PDV/PVR offer an imposing list
of benefits. The capability of failing with less danger to
equipment and personnel, durability and ease of handling
lead the list. The PDV/PVR arrester is a worthy development
in the long list of Ohio Brass surge arrester innovations
innovations that have regularly improved protective levels,
lowered costs of protection and enabled utilities to operate
equipment with lower basic insulation levels, with savings of
millions of dollars.
Note: The PDV/PVR arresters comply with ANSI and IEC
standards for distribution arresters.

The polymer housing fits like a tight elastic glove around the
internal components in contrast to porcelain housings which
are separated from the varistors. Even though vacuum
pumps can remove most moisture from the space inside the
porcelain housing, a source of potential trouble can develop if
small cracks let additional moisture enter the housing.
In the PDV/PVR arresters, the varistors are locked in place
with tightly wound layers of fiberglass filament impregnated
with epoxy resin. The polymer housing design excludes air
and moisture. The inside diameter of the housing is slightly
smaller than the outside diameter of the cylindrical element
providing a snug fit.
The basic PDV/PVR housing is only six inches long for a 10
kV unit 50 to 60 percent shorter than the porcelain
equivalent.
A great advantage of the PDV/PVR construction is that fault
withstand capability can be maintained throughout the
voltage range. The fault current capability of porcelain is
reduced as the housing lengthens.

Tests Verify PDV & PVR Arrester Design

Ohio Brass introduced the Multirester II distribution arrester
twenty years ago. This design had an automatic pressure
relief system at the lower end and greatly reduced the
probability of porcelain fragmentation following failure while
energized in service. However, the desirability of pressure
relief was not widely recognized and few utilities considered
the benefits worth the added cost and manufacture was
discontinued after a few years.
A decade later, the desirability of pressure relief in distribution
arresters became more widely recognized. A design test
procedure was incorporated into ANSI Standard C62.1 and
several designs with end venting systems, sometimes
enhanced with arc transfer systems and/or use of internal
liners, have been available in recent years. All of these
designs continued the use of porcelain housings. Therefore, if
rated fault current magnitude, or duration, is exceeded, the
risk of porcelain fragmentation remains.
The ESP polymer-housed PDV/PVR arresters with epoxy/
fiberglass-wrapped MOV disc modules eliminates the major
hazard of an arrester failure by not having a porcelain
housing to explode if a power arc is established within the
arrester.

Full Scale Fault Current Tests

A series of full voltage tests was conducted in accordance
with Section 8.10 of ANSI/IEEE C62.11-1993 to determine
the failure modes of the PDV/PVR arresters. The 8.4 kV
MCOV specimens were assembled with fine fuse wire
shunting the blocks before assembly within the module. As
described by the standard, this technique simulates the result
of arrester failure by internal dielectric breakdown.

An 8.4 kV MCOV/10 kV rated PDV-100 arrester mounted for

a fault current withstand test.

Fault currents of 500 to 20,000 amperes RMS symmetrical for

durations of 10 to 120 cycles were used in these studies on
the PDV-100/PVR arrester. Fault currents of 500 to 10,000
amperes RMS symmetrical for durations of 10 to 120 cycles
were used in the PDV-65 studies. Successful performance
was demonstrated when the epoxy/fiberglass-wrapped
modules either ruptured or burned through to relieve internal
pressure. The polymer housings then split open to relieve
pressure. At high fault currents the housing may become
detached from the MOV module. Since higher voltage
arresters were assembled by modular construction, the test
results are valid for all arrester voltage ratings.
The test sequence was recorded by ultra high-speed movies
and camera photographs of the before and after condition of
the arresters.

PDV/PVR Design Test Report Summary

The PDV-100 and PDV-65 arresters have been tested in
accordance with ANSI Standard C62.11-1993 for metal-oxide
surge arresters. There is no ANSI Standard for PVR arresters
so they were tested per the heavy duty requirement.

The PDV-100 epoxy-fiberglass-wrapped metal-oxide disc

modules ruptured to relieve the internal pressure generated
by a fault current arc of 10 kA for 10 cycles. The polymer
housing has been split open, but the housing remains
attached.

The PDV-100/PVR meet or exceed all the requirements for

heavy-duty distribution arrester designs. The PDV-65 meets
or exceeds all requirements for normal duty surge arresters.

Arrester Lead Length

The first step in reducing voltage stress to extend the life of
insulated equipment is to use metal-oxide varistor (MOV)
arresters which have lower discharge voltage levels than
equivalent silicon-carbide (SiC) designs.
The next step in reducing voltage stress is the use of
optimum connection methods for the arrester lead wires.
The highest current surge voltage stress occurs when
lightning strokes to the overhead line have fast rates-of-rise.
An arrester discharge current which reaches its crest in 1
sec will produce 10% more voltage across an MOV arrester,
and 30% more voltage across an SIC arrester, than will the
standard 8 sec test waves used to establish the comparative
IR discharge voltage data shown in arrester catalogs. Adding
to the surge voltage across the arrester is the L di/dt inductive
drop in the lead wire carrying the surge current.
It is now known that fast-rising arrester discharge currents are
much more common than previously believed. In the late
1970s, more accurate measurements of arrester surge
currents were taken which showed rates-or-rise at 13 kA/
sec in half of the discharges, with a maximum value of 60
kA/sec. Consistent with this relatively new data, a realistic
estimate for the lead wire voltage drop in arrester installations
exposed to lightning is 6 kV/foot - this value is now used for
calculating the protective margins under fast-front surge
conditions.

Many pole mounted transformer installations use arresters

mounted on the crossarm. Such installations tend to have
very long arrester leads which greatly increase surge voltage
stress on transformer windings. Arrester lead is the combined
length of line and ground lead wire in series with the arrester
AND in parallel with the protected device (transformer in this
case).
An arrester with lead length of 10 feet can typically add 60 kV
to the arrester discharge voltage during fast-front lightning
surges. Typical arresters used in this type (13.2 kV system,
95 kV BIL) of installation would discharge such a surge at
about 36.5 kV, making the total voltage surge on the transformer 96.5 kV. This leaves a protective margin to the 110 kV
chopped-wave withstand of only 11% well below the 20%
minimum recommended.
However, the protective margin could be greatly improved by
moving the ground connection of the transformers up the pole
to just under the crossarm, to where the arrester ground
leads meet the pole ground. This connection method would
reduce arrester lead from ten to five feet. Lead wire inductive
drop would then be reduced from 60 to 30 kV. Total voltage
stress on the transformers would be reduced to 71 kV and
the protective margin would be increased to a comfortable
55%.

Selection of arrester size is based upon the maximum

continuous operating voltage (MCOV) that is applied across
the arrester in service (line-to-ground). For arresters on
effectively grounded systems, this is normally the maximum
line-to-ground voltage -- e.g., 7.65 kV on a 12.47 kV multigrounded system. For ungrounded or impedance-grounded
systems, the MCOV should be at least 90 percent of maximum phase-to-phase voltage. Smaller arresters than shown
may be used, contact your Ohio Brass representative for
details.

DynaVar PDV/PVR arresters are gapless and all the system line-to-ground voltage appears
on the metal-oxide valve elements. The blocks can withstand significant overvoltage for a
limited time, depending on the magnitude of any immediately preceding surge duty. They
can withstand 1.1 percent of MCOV for periods of 2000 hours, up to five percent of the life of
the arrester.
PVR arresters can withstand about 3.4 KJ/KV of MCOV within one minute. DynaVar PDV100 arresters can absorb up to 2.2 kJ per kV of MCOV within one minute. DynaVar PDV-65
arresters can absorb up to 1.4 kJ per kV of MCOV within one minute. This maximum energy
rating may be repeated many times provided there is a sufficient cooling time to keep
arrester temperature at reasonable levels.

For convenience, the catalog data shown on page 12

includes the traditional duty-cycle voltage rating associated
with the MCOV of each arrester.

Optional Attachments for PDV &

PVR Surge Arresters
The installed cost of distribution arresters can be held to a
minimum by ordering only the attachments specifically
required for the application. Ohio Brass simplifies this
procedure by offering a variety of interchangeable accessories which can be obtained by combining a coded suffix
number with the basic arrester catalog number. The same
suffix numbers apply to accessories for the PDV/PVR.
The coded suffix number is determined by replacing the 0s in
the 7000 code with the appropriate number digit to specify
the required accessories. The first digit after the 7 describes
the line terminal hardware; the second digit describes the
mounting hardware; and the third digit describes the ground
terminal hardware. An 0 in any of the three positions
indicates that no attachment for that position is being
ordered.
The tabulation at the bottom of this page can be used to
obtain the suffix code for all common attachments offered by
Ohio Brass. The illustrations (on pages 10 and 11) provide
the suffix code for some of the more popular combinations.
Ohio Brass district managers have information on additional
optional attachments not listed in this catalog. Recommendations will be made upon request.

How to Specify a 7000 Suffix

(Example) To obtain the 7000 code suffix number for a 10 kV
duty cycle rated PDV-65 arrester equipped with a line
terminal, wire clamp, insulating base bracket, NEMA
crossarm hanger for a 4 x 5 crossarm and a ground lead
isolator with terminal nut, follow this procedure:

Step 1 - The catalog number (page 12) of the basic 10 kV

PDV-65 arrester is 217259.
Step 2 - The 7200 code in the table below specifies the top
terminal and wire clamp.
Step 3 - The 7020 code specifies the insulating base bracket
and 4 x 5 NEMA crossarm hanger.
Step 4 - The 7004 code specifies the ground lead isolator,
terminal nut and nut.
Step 5 - Combine the three suffix digits following the 7 in their
correct order gives us the suffix code: 7224.
Step 6 - Order the arrester by complete catalog number
217259-7224.

Notes:
1. The ground isolator identifies in codes 7003, 7004 and
7005 is an integral part of the insulating base bracket. The
color for the insulating base bracket/ground lead isolator
assembly is ANSI-70 gray.
2. Code 7030 identifies the insulating base bracket/transformer mounting bracket combination. The transformer
mounting bracket used in code 7030 is Ohio Brass part
number 273066-4004 ( 8.4 kV MCOV) and 273025 - 4004
( 10.2 kV MCOV). A drawing of this bracket is included on
page 11 to assist in applying this arrester. Also shown are
drawings of the insulating base brackets used with the PDV/
PVR arresters. Insulating base bracket 273206 is used with
PDV/PVR arresters MCOVs 8.4 kV and below and insulating
bracket 273207 is used with PDV/PVR arresters 10.2 kV - 29
kV MCOV. Contact your Ohio Brass representative for further
information.
3. All terminals are solderless, clamp type, suitable for
conductor sizes from No. 6 AWG solid to No. 2 AWG

Insulation Coordination
These electrical characteristics are used to determine
protective margins for insulation levels in use.

coordinated with the 500 ampere switching discharge voltage of

the surge arrester.

These two figures illustrate a 34.5 kV effectively

grounded system, 150 kV BIL, protected with 22 kV
MCOV Type PDV arresters.

The effects of faster rates of rise and of reduced insulation

strength due to aging effects would result in further reduced
protective margins.

Figure 1 shows equipment protected with a PDV-100

arrester Catalog Number 213622 and Figure 2 shows the
same equipment protected with a PDV-65 arrester
Catalog Number 217272.

Industry standards recommend minimum margins of 20 percent

for the chopped wave and BIL levels and 15 percent for switching
surge protection.

The protective margins are calculated using the following

formula:
Insulation Level
( Arrester
Discharge Voltage

-1

x 100 = % Margin

Fig. 1
PDV-100
METAL-OXIDE ARRESTER INSULATION COORDINATION
34.5 kV System

For example, the protective margin for the BIL is

determined by first finding the arrester discharge voltage
at the impulse current level selected. In this example, the
10 kA discharge current is used as representative of
typical lightning stroke currents discharged through the
arrester. The 10 kA 8/20 discharge voltage of catalog
number 213622 is 86.5 kV. The percent protective
margin using the formula is:
150 kV
- 1)
( 86.5
kV

x 100 =73 percent.

Crest Voltage in kV

The insulation levels are obtained from the manufacturer

of the equipment being protected. The arrester discharge
voltages are obtained from the table on page 12.

The protective margins for other impulse currents are

found in a similar fashion. In the case of the PDV-65
arrester, the 10 kA 8/20 discharge voltage of the arrester
is 99 kV. This results in a protective margin of 52
percent.

For example, if the effect of lead length was included in

the calculations and 1.6 kV per foot of lead length added
to the discharge voltage of the arrester. With two feet of
line lead and two feet of ground lead, 6.4 kV is added to
the published discharge voltage of the arrester. Therefore, the discharge voltage of the PDV-100 is effectively
92.9 kV, resulting in a reduction of protective margin to
61 percent at 10 kA. In the case of the PDV-65 arrester,
the 99 kV discharge voltage of the arrester is added to
the 6.4 kV from the leads resulting in equipment seeing
105.4 kV reducing the protective margin to 42 percent.
The chopped wave strength of the insulation being
protected is typically coordinated with the .5 sec
discharge voltage of the surge arrester. The heavy duty
PDV-100 uses a 10 kA current while the PDV-65 catalog
value is for a 5 kA peak current.

These examples include many simplifying assumptions.

Not included are the effects of faster rates of current rise
on the discharge voltage, reduced insulation levels due
to various factors, and line and ground leads.
