Installation and activation instructions

This document contains installation and activation instructions for both the Win
dows and Macintosh platforms.
General installation notes
Make sure that your computer meets the system requirements for Adobe Illustrator
CS2. System requirements are listed in the Illustrator Read Me file on the Illu
strator CD and on the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/products/illustrator/system
reqs.html.
If you purchased Illustrator from the Adobe website, you need to locate the Illu
strator CS2 folder on your computer to install the software.
After you install Illustrator, please refer to the Illustrator Read Me file in t
he Adobe Illustrator CS2 folder on your hard drive. The Illustrator Read Me file
contains last-minute information that you may want to print and keep with your
documentation for future reference.
General activation notes
Activation is a simple process you must complete within 30 days of installing th
e software. Activation allows you to continue using the software, and it helps t
o prevent casual copying of the software onto more computers than the license ag
reement allows. Instructions to activate Illustrator are provided in this docume
nt. For more information about activation, visit the Adobe website at www.adobe.
com/activation.
Installing Illustrator
Complete the following procedure to install Illustrator from the Adobe Illustrat
or CS2 CD. You cannot run Illustrator from the CD; you must install the program
files onto your hard disk.
Upgrading If you're upgrading from a previous version of Illustrator, the instal
ler creates a new folder for the Illustrator CS2 files. Files from the previous
version aren't affected.
To install Illustrator in Windows:
1 -- Log into the computer as a user with administrative rights. If you don't ha
ve administrative rights, see the person who administers the computer.
2 -- (Recommended) Close any Adobe applications that are open and disable any an
tivirus software.
3 -- Do one of the following:
Insert the Adobe Illustrator CS2 Disc 1 into your CD-ROM drive. After the Au
toplay dialog box appears, click Install Adobe Illustrator CS2 to continue.
If you downloaded Illustrator from the Adobe website, locate the Adobe Illus
trator CS2 folder, and double-click the Setup.exe file within it.
4 -- In the Welcome screen, click Next.
5 -- Follow the on-screen instructions, and when prompted for a serial number, d
o one of the following:
If you're installing the software from a CD, type the serial number exactly

as it appears on the outside of the CD case.

If you downloaded the software from the Adobe website, type the serial numbe
r exactly as it appears on your receipt page and in the e-mail you received conf
irming your purchase.
Note: If you're installing an upgrade, type the serial number included with Illu
strator CS2. The installer will then search for the previous version on your com
puter. If it doesn't find the previous version, it will prompt you to either ins
ert the CD from the previous version or verify the location it's installed.
6 -- Continue to follow the on-screen instructions, and when you receive a messa
ge stating that the installation was successful, click Finish.
You may be prompted to activate your copy of Illustrator. See See Activating Ill
ustrator.
To install Illustrator in Mac OS:
1 -- Close any Adobe applications that are open.
2 -- Do one of the following:
Insert the Adobe Illustrator CS2 Disc 1 into your CD-ROM drive. On the deskt
op, double-click Adobe Illustrator CS2 CD Disc 1, and then double-click the Inst
all Adobe Illustrator CS2 icon.
If you downloaded the software from the Adobe website, open the Adobe Illust
rator CS2 folder, and double-click Install Adobe Illustrator CS2.
3 -- In the Authenticate dialog box, type the name and password for an administr
ator account, and then click OK. If you don't know the name and password, see th
e person who administers the computer.
4 -- Follow the on-screen instructions, and when prompted for a serial number, d
o one of the following:
If you're installing the software from a CD, type the serial number exactly
as it appears on the outside of the CD case.
If you downloaded the software from the Adobe website, type the serial numbe
r exactly as it appears on your receipt page and in the e-mail you received conf
irming your purchase.
Note: If you're upgrading from a previous version, type the upgrade serial numbe
r included with Illustrator CS2. The installer will then search for the previous
version on your computer. If it doesn't find the previous version, it will prom
pt you to either insert the CD from the previous version or verify the location
it's installed.
5 -- Continue to follow the on-screen instructions, and when you receive a messa
ge stating that the installation was successful, click Finish.
You may be prompted to activate your copy of Illustrator. See See Activating Ill
ustrator.
Activating Illustrator
You can activate your copy of Illustrator when you first start the software or a
t a later time over the Internet or by phone. Activation over the Internet takes
just a few seconds.

If you replace or reformat your computer's hard drive, you may need to reactivat
e the software. If you want to install the software on a different computer, you
first need to transfer the activation to it from the first machine.
To activate Illustrator:
1 -- Start Illustrator.
2 -- The first Activation dialog box appears. Do one of the following:
If you want to activate Illustrator over the Internet and you have an active
Internet connection, click Activate to complete the activation.
If you want to activate by phone or at a later time, click Activation Option
s.
3 -- If you clicked Activation Options, click Next in the Activation Information
dialog box, and then select one of the following activation options:
Select Over The Internet, and then click Activate to complete the activation
.
Select By Telephone Via The Automated Software Activation System, and then c
lick Next. Call the phone number that appears on-screen to contact Adobe Custome
r Service. Enter the authorization code they provide, and then click Activate.
Select Remind Me if you want to delay the activation. Choose a reminder opti
on from the pop-up menu, and then click Next.
If you need help activating the software, please contact Adobe Customer Service.
To transfer the activation to a different computer:
After you transfer the activation and uninstall the software, you can install an
d reactivate the software on the new computer.
Note: Be sure to transfer the activation before you uninstall the software, unle
ss you intend to reinstall the software on the same computer.
1 -- Connect to the Internet from your computer.
2 -- Start Illustrator, and choose Help > Transfer Activation.
3 -- Follow the on-screen instructions.
