Final Exam Study Guide
For the Final Exam, be sure to familiarize yourself with all terms and concepts from lecture, classroom
discussions, and activities, as well as your readings from the text and from the Bible. It is
recommended that you study in groups or with a partner, and that you compare and collate (Look it
up!) your lecture notes. Please note that PowerPoint presentations from lectures will NOT be posted
online.
The Final Exam will consist of 200 Scantron questions, worth 1 point each, plus one five paragraph
essay, worth 50 points.
Three of the following six essays will be on the Final Exam (you will not know which). Of those three,
you will choose one of the following and answer in the form of a five paragraph essay. Each
paragraph should consist of a minimum 5-7 well developed sentences.
1.

Discuss the sacramental imagination of Catholicism. Be sure to:

Define sacrament in the broad sense and in the strict sense

Explain what is meant by the expression, The sacraments are more than mere
symbols, but they are only sacraments insofar as they are symbols.

Explain how sacraments are conduits of grace (i.e., perichoresis, or joining the divine
dance)

2.

Discuss the sacrament of Baptism. Be sure to:

Discuss how water serves as the symbol of this sacrament

Discuss the scriptural roots of this sacrament and how it was celebrated in the early
Church

Explain why Baptism is a once in a lifetime sacrament that cannot be repeated

3.

Discuss the concept of restored order. Be sure to:

Discuss how the Sacraments of Initiation were celebrated in the early Church

Discuss how our current way of celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation in the Latin
Church developed, and why

Define Restored Order, and discuss some arguments for it with regard to both
Confirmation and the Eucharist

4.

Discuss the sacrament of the Eucharist. Be sure to:

Discuss how bread and wine serve as the symbols of this sacrament

Discuss the scriptural roots of this sacrament and how it was celebrated in the early
Church

Explain how the Eucharist is simultaneously a meal, a sacrifice, and the Real Presence
of Jesus

5.

Discuss the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Be sure to:

Discuss the scriptural roots of this sacrament and how it was celebrated in the early
Church

Discuss the reforms of this sacrament introduced by Irish monks in the 7 th century

Discuss the concepts of the law of contraries and restorative justice in their
relation to Penance

6.

Discuss the Liturgy of the Hours. Be sure to:

Explain why this prayer is called Liturgy of the Hours and Divine Office

Discuss the historical roots of this prayer in Second Temple Judaism and the early
Church
Discuss the Hours as the sanctification of time and briefly describe each of the five
major Hours
