Kokanee Fry Find A New Home
On May 21 97,000 kokanee fry were introduced into

Crawford Creek (92,000) and Hendricks Creek (5,000).
Approximately 65 people showed up to help bucket the two
inch landlocked sockeye salmon into their new home in
the creeks, then down into Kootenay Lake. Crawford Bay
students and teachers took some time away from the classroom to learn how the process of stocking lakes and rivers
works. The young fry made their way over from the Bull
River hatchery east of Cranbrook in a large tank truck with
four technicians from Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC.
Once in the main lake they will spend the next three to
four years there, before returning to the creeks to start the
cycle over. Many will find their fate at the mouths of our
famous Gerrard rainbows and bull
trout, but these Kokanee are what the
lake is short of these days to the point
of there is a no bag take on Kokanee,
imposed this year in order to help
increase the population.
The Oxygen Art Centre will open their summer season

with the arrival of multi-talented international dancer
and choreographer Shannon Cooney. Energetically titled
Dynamic Expansion, Cooneys presence at the centre and
around town will be invigorating as Cooney brings with
her a progressive pulse of the contemporary dance world
from Berlin, Germany where Cooney is currently living.
While in residency for the month of June, Shannon
Cooney will be working on the creation of a solo dance
installation. Her intention is to use her residency to explore
a new process, one that emphasizes the inclusion of everyday interactions and responses of the residency environment to effect the creation of a new dance. This could
include the involvement of other people, spaces, sounds
and objects. Throughout the month Cooney will be offering several ways to meet her and get involved in her dance
process and project. She emphasizes that no experience is
necessary to participate in the workshops.
The events being offered include an artist talk on June 4
at 7 pm at Oxygen, a dance workshop at the Moving Centre on June 6 and 7, a performance at the June 15 Nelson
City Council meeting, and an art event on June 29 to end

Anyone who has contact with live poultry and/or has

eggs from hobby farms, non-commercial organic farms
and backyard flocks is advised to take precautions to
protect their health. Members of the public who have
acquired poultry from a hatchery in Alberta, and are concerned they may be affected by this outbreak, should contact their supplier or their local Health Protection Unit for

Interior Health is collaborating with the BC Centre for

Disease Control, BC health authorities, BC Ministry of
Agriculture, Public Health Agency of Canada and provincial partners to investigate an outbreak of salmonellosis in
Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. The cases of
human illness are related to contact with live baby poultry
originating from a hatchery in Alberta.
To date, there have been 13 cases of salmonella infection and two hospitalizations in BC connected to this
outbreak. Several of these cases occurred in the Interior
Health region.

Lt Governor Of BC Visits Kaslo

On Thursday, May 14 the Lt Governor of BC, the Honourable Judith Guichon, visited Kaslo. Because she had
only a few hours in Kaslo, it was important to show her
our two National Historic Sites.
First we viewed the old City Hall, where she honoured
Kaslos former CAO Rae Sawyer with an engraved plaque
in appreciation of her many years of service to Kaslo.
Her Honour and entourage were then taken, via horse
and carriage provided by Kootenay Horse and Carriage,
to the SS Moyie Sternwheeler. After a brief tour of the
ship, a beautiful high tea luncheon was catered on board
by the Kaslo Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Beautiful classical guitar music was provided by David
Stewart over the luncheon hour. Current CAO Neil Smith

presented her Honour with a gift basket of locally made

items soaps, candles and chocolates, graciously provided by Figments in Kaslo.
With no time to waste, it was off to JV Humprhries
school to meet the school children and attend a 45 minute assembly complete with a short performance of the
traditional May Pole dance by grades two and three.
The Honourable Judith Guichon spoke to the school
children about the electoral process, the importance of the
land and the importance of being involved in the government they elected. Her comments on how there are more
micro-organisms in a tablespoon of soil than people on the
planet was very popular indeed and left more than a few of
the students gazing in wonder at their own cupped hand.

Die Wise Author Stephen Jenkinson

Speaks In Kaslo
Stephen Jenkinson, author of Die Wise, will speak in
Kaslo on Tuesday, June 16, from 7 to 9 pm at the Langham
Cultural Centre. A teacher, author and a social worker,
Stephen Jenkinson is also an activist who is passionate
about supporting quality care for dying people and their
families. He has Masters degrees from Harvard University (Theology) and the University of Toronto (Social
Work), and is the subject of the National Film Board of
Canadas film: Griefwalker. He is currently touring with
his new book Die Wise.
Dying well, Jenkinson writes, is a right and responsibility of everyone. It is a moral, political, and spiritual obligation each person owes their ancestors and their heirs. It is
not a lifestyle option. It is a birthright and a debt. Die Wise
dreams such a dream, and plots such an uprising. How we
die, how we care for dying people, and how we carry our
dead: this work makes our village life or breaks it.
Die Wise does not offer seven steps for coping with
death. It does not suggest ways to make dying easier. It
pours no honey to make the medicine go down. Instead,
with lyrical prose, deep wisdom, and stories from his two
decades of working with dying people and their families,
Stephen places death at the centre of the page and asks us
to behold it in all its painful beauty.

Peony Show Luncheon &

Presentation
It is not often that a peony expert and grower comes

to Castlegar to judge a show and give a presentation on
peonies. On Saturday, June 27 there will be a luncheon
and presentation given by Carol Adelman at the Castlegar Community Complex, Growing and Caring for Peonies. Carol is the President of the Pacific Northwest Peony
Association and resides in Salem, Oregon where she and
her family operate Adelman Peony Gardens. Carol is also
a member of the Canadian Peony Society. Tickets for the
luncheon and presentation are only $20 and available
online at www.peonyfarm.ca or one of the following businesses: Kalawsky GM in Castlegar; The Doorway in Trail;
Otter Books in Nelson.

how to navigate the soul journey that our own death, or

To The Slocan Narrows
Archaeological Project (SNAP)
Join Caf Langham enthusiasts for a rare opportunity
to learn first hand about the archaeology of the area,
on Monday June 15 at 10:30 am. The Langhams special
field trip will visit archaeologist and anthropologist, Dr.
Nathan Goodale and his students at the remains of one of
the largest and oldest pithouse village sites in the Columbia Basin, which date back an estimated 3,800 years.
Dr. Goodale leads an archaeological field school from
Hamilton College, New York, on the Slocan River. His
interests lie in the origin of villages and small scale
semi-sedentary societies, as well as human technological adaptations. He specializes in the rise of complex
hunter-gatherers in the interior Pacific Northwest, the
forager/farmer transition in Southwest Asia, and rural
coastal adaptations in western Ireland. His research focus
includes paleo-demography, technological adaptations,
modeling human behaviour with quantitative methods,
lithic technological organization, and geochemical spatial analysis, all couched in an evolutionary theoretical
framework to understand human behavior. The aboriginal people who lived at the site are believed to be the
ancestors of the Sinixt people who inhabited the territory
along the Columbia River from just north of Revelstoke
to Kettle Falls in Washington state.
The Lemon Creek site contains 32 pithouse indentations, some of which the archaeologists estimate housed
up to 55 or 60 people. Carbon dating shows that the
pithouses were used up to the late 1700s when the first of

many smallpox epidemics devastated First Nations populations in the region. To learn more about Dr. Goodales
