ANNEX 1.
1.
MENTOR GUIDELINES
The objective of the Architecture Internship Program is to ensure that every student has meaningful
exposure to the construction industry and to provide every student with a challenging work experience that
enhances the classroom experience and exposes the student to the real world of architectural practice and
construction industry means and methods as well as expand understanding of the complexities, discipline
and challenges in the practice of architecture.
When the Mentor-Architect employs the student in an architecture internship, the Mentor will expose the
student to different task where the student has defined responsibility for a work product. An intern should
receive practical experience and training under the direct supervision of a Mentor/Licensed Architect in at
least half of the areas of experience enumerated under each areas of practice.

2.
The college/department considers the student architecture internship requirement to be a critical element of
every students architecture degree and expects its student to be productive employees during their training.
Positive training experiences often result in the students permanent employment by the sponsoring
company following graduation. An AI Faculty Coordinator, whose name and contact information are
shown below, manages the program. For any questions, this individual may be reached through :

The Mentor shall be a registered and licensed Architect in the jurisdiction in which the employment is

undertaken, either will be the employer or the architect to whom student intern reports, during each
recorded period of work experience.
3.
Before a Mentor-Architect employs a student intern, the Mentor must issue a Certification of Acceptance
(Architecture Internship). The certificate will be sent to the AI Faculty Coordinator for approval and will
return an executed copy to the company. If the AI Faculty Coordinator has not approved the individual
employment agreement by the third day of classes for the summer session enrolled, the student will be
dropped from the class and the student will not receive credit from the Architecture Internship.
4.
The terms and conditions of the students internship are between the employer and the student Intern. The
Department believes that the requirement for the student to find and negotiate his/her own
training/employment is an important part of the learning process. The HTE/Mentor-Architect may provide
necessary incentives to the student trainee/intern as contained in the Memorandum of Agreement
5.
The Department is committed to minimize demand on the time and resource of construction industry
employers; however, the architecture internship is a curriculum requirement and it is the departments
responsibility to verify that the student has successfully completed the requirement. Therefore, the
department will require the student to obtain the signature of the employers AI Mentor/Architect on the
Certification of Acceptance (architecture internship) and Log Book of Diversified Work Experience, on
daily/weekly progress reports, and on the students AI Certificate of Completion and Completion
Letter/Report. A Mentor is encouraged to make comments on the department Architecture Internship
Program and the students performance; the AI Completion Letter/Report is the opportunity for such
comments.
6.
Occasionally the department may arrange for an on-site visit with the student during his/her internship
period. Any such visit will be coordinated in advance with his/her Mentor.
