2.03 FABRICATING GENERALLY

A.

B.

C.

E.

PREFABRICATION:
1.

Fabrication shall be carried out in an approved metal fabrication shop.

2.

Work that cannot be permanently shop-assembled shall be preassembled, marked, and disassembled prior to shipment to ensure
proper assembly on site.

3.

Fabricate work in the largest practicable sizes to minimise site work.

QUALITY
1.

Fabricate metalwork carefully and accurately to ensure compliance with

design and performance requirements, using types and grades of metal
appropriate for the purpose.

2.

Finished work must be free from distortion, and cracks.

3.

Use proprietary products to manufacturers' recommendations.

CASTINGS:
1.

To be clean, smooth, true to dimensions and pattern.

2.

To be in one piece, where practicable, and of uniform thickness.

3.

To be of required strength for their purpose.

COLD FORMED WORK:

1.

Use brake presses or cold rolling to produce accurate profiles with

straight arrises.

CUTTING:
1.

Cut metal by sawing, shearing or blanking.

2.

If flame cutting is carried out, grind back out edges back to clean,
smooth edges.

3.

Make cuts clearly and accurately, without deforming adjacent work.

CORNERS/JUNCTIONS:
1.

H.

K.

HOLES:
1.

Drill or cleanly punch holes. Burning holes is not allowed.

2.

Holes of metric bolts and screws shall be sized to BS 4186, medium fit
series, unless specified otherwise.

CLEANING:
1.

L.

N.

Mitre junctions of identical sections, unless otherwise specified.

Remove all burrs and sharp arrisses which could be visible after fixing or
a hazard to the user.

BONDING:
1.

Prepare surfaces of metals to receive adhesives by degreasing and

abrading mechanically or chemically.

2.

Use adhesives to manufacturer's recommendations.

3.

Form bond under pressure.

MECHANICAL JOINTS:
1.

Joints shall be tight, with no visible gaps, capable of developing full

strength of members, flush, unless otherwise indicated, formed to
exclude water in exposed locations.

2.

Use countersunk machine screws, unless otherwise specified where:

a.
b.

O.

P.

Screw heads will be visible after component is fixed.

Raised screws heads would interfere with any moving part of
components.

THREADED CONNECTIONS:
1.

Make tight, using locking nuts, with threads concealed.

2.

Cut off projecting ends of bolts and screws flush with nuts or adjacent
metal.

PINNED CONNECTIONS:
