REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

A.

Signs shall meet all national and local sign and electrical codes.

B.

Signs shall be in English and Arabic or as directed. Use Naskh style of letter for Arabic signs.

SUBMITTALS

A.

Comply with Section 01 33 00.

B.

Product Data: Submit manufacturers technical data.

C.

Shop Drawings: Submit fully dimensioned coordinated shop drawings for approval prior to
manufacture. Indicate styles, graphics, lettering font, foreground and background colors,
locations, construction details, wiring diagrams and overall dimensions of all signs.

D.

Samples: Submit samples of sign finishing materials.

1.06

Project Specification

QUALIFICATIONS

A.

Manufacturer: Company specializing in manufacturing the products specified in this Section


with minimum five years documented experience.

B.

All electrical connections shall be made by a licensed electrician.

1.07

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

A.

Maintain uniformity in design, placement and use of standard signs throughout the project.
Follow MUTCD standards for all traffic signs.

B.

Co-ordinate roadway geometric design with traffic signage placed effectively to give drivers
and pedestrians necessary informative, regulatory and warning information.

C.

Provide same type and placement of sign for all identical conditions.

DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A.

Comply with Section 01 61 00.

B.

Package signs, labeled in name groups.

C.

Store adhesive attachment tape at ambient room temperatures.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

A.

Do not install signs when the ambient temperature is outside the range recommended by the
manufacturer.

B.

Maintain this temperature range during and after installation of signs.

PART 2:
2.01
A.

PRODUCTS

MATERIALS
Regulatory Signs, Informative Signs and Variable Message Signs:
1. Text and graphics screen printed on lacquered aluminum backings in powder coated,
extruded aluminum frames. Backing thickness as recommended by the manufacturer,
sufficient not to deform under installed conditions, 2.0 mm minimum, all as selected by the
Engineer.

B.

2. Posts and fixings of galvanized steel pipe as detailed on the Drawings in accordance with
HDM.
Warning Signs:
1. Standard warning signs screen printed on lacquered aluminum backings, 2.0 mm min with
posts and fixings all as shown on drawings and conforming to HDM and MUTCD.
2. Text, photographs and graphics shall be surface screen printed.

Project Specification

GENERAL
Shapes: Use following standard sign shapes;
1. Round shape for regulatory signs.
2. Square or rectangular for informative signs.
3. Equilateral triangle, with one vertice upward for warning signs.
4. Equilateral triangle, with one vertice downward exclusively for Give Way sign.
5. Octagon shape exclusively for Stop sign.

B.

Colors: Use standard colors complying to the MUTCD for both border and legends.

C.

Dimensions: Follow the dimensions as detailed in MUTCD manual. Where greater legibility or
emphasis is needed, increase standard sizes with the approval of the Engineer and authorities
having jurisdiction.

2.03

ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS

A.

Electrical installations for signage shall be shown on the Drawings and shall comply with
applicable provisions of Division 16 of this Specification.

B.

Illumination to all overhead signs shall be provided where shown on the Drawings.

C.

Provide time clocks, switching, photocells and BMS connections including wiring, conduiting
and all accessories as required for the proper operation of signs.

2.04

VARIABLE MESSAGE SIGNS (VMS)

A.

Design: High intensity amber with 24 hour readability maintenance free LED technology. Full
matrix configuration; lift out modules for fast replacement; message selection by
predetermined message library and online formatting; onscreen message confirmation at
central; diagnostic verification of pixel status.

B.

To be of weather tight aluminum construction, walk in housing/lift face housing with efficient
ventilation system.

C.

Design VMS to have one or more messages, which may be displayed or deleted as required by
the design shown on the Drawings or as instructed by Engineer.

D.

Install the messages on the VMS, such that they are changeable manually, by remote control or
by automatic controls which sense the conditions required with central control systems as per
the design shown on Drawings or instructed by Engineer.

E.

Comply with MUTCD manual for color, shape and dimensions of messages.

EXAMINATION
Verify that substrate surfaces are ready to receive work.

3.02

Project Specification

INSTALLATION

A.

Install in accordance with manufacturers instructions and HDM and MUTCD manuals.

B.

Install signs after surfaces are finished, in locations indicated.

C.

Position signs as indicated on the Drawings and as directed by the Engineer.

3.03

PROTECTION

A.

Comply with Section 01 77 00.

B.

Protect installed signs during construction to prevent damage from whatever source.

3.04

CLEANING

A.

Comply with Section 01 77 00.

B.

Before final inspection, remove protective coverings and clean signs.

C.

Final cleaning of all surfaces shall be carried out strictly in accordance with the manufacturers
instructions.

3.05

SPARES

A.

Comply with Section 01 78 23.

B.

Provide 2% additional spares for each sign type.
