Marine Dyke

Marine Dyke is a sewn geotextile tube filled

with sand and used to form coastal structures,
acting as a replacement for conventional
erosion control methods.
Marine Dyke for coastal or riverine protection are tubular
containment systems made of specialised geosynthetics
which prevent soil from being eroded by waves or currents.
Typically Marine Dyke is hydraulically filled with a slurry of
sand and water but filling can also be done by a combined
mechanical/hydraulic method.

Marine Dyke as shoreline protection

1
Development in coastal areas is increasing rapidly. As
a result, the infrastructure becomes very important,
because it serves as supporting the economy.
On the other hand, the coastal area is naturally
susceptible to the dynamics of the ocean, with
erosion due to waves and currents being very
common. Thus, to protect the infrastructure such as
roads and wharf, coastal protection systems are
required.
Marine Dyke provide as shoreline protection
solutions addressing the issues associated with
coastal erosion. Due to the use of locally available
sand, Marine Dyke can be an efficient solution,
both in cost and installation time.

Marine Dyke can act as a standalone element or be

part of a coastal protection structure.

Marine Dyke as containment bund

1
The lack of existing available land due to ever
increasing development has prompted an increase in
land reclamation for residential and commercial
purposes.
High costs, difficult worksite, and limited working
time are the challenges in reclamation work.

The first step involved in the reclamation process is

the construction of a containment bund, which
should be undertaken quickly in order to facilitate the
next phase of work.
Marine Dyke offer a fast and easy dyke installation,
which can be filled up with a locally available sand,
making it a competitive solution in comparison to
conventional material like rock.

Designing the Marine Dyke

(images taken from various sources)

The Marine Dyke dimension and fabric type can be customized according to the project requirements. The
dimension of the Marine Dyke are determined by the type of structure, installation method, structure stability
(hydraulic and geotechnical), and others technical aspect.
The Marine Dyke fabric usually made of woven polypropylene material, but can also be made from polyester woven
material or a special combination of woven and non-woven polyester (composite). Determination of the Marine
Dyke material is very dependent on the filling material, the shoreline condition, and the function of the structure.
In some projects, a nonwoven geotextile added on top or bottom of Marine Dyke to act as a protection from the
impact of foreign objects brought in by waves or sharp object on the seabed.
Technical guidelines, standards and software for designing geotextile tube are widely available, and GSi (incorporated
with HUESKER Synthetic GmbH) can provide you a recommendation on the design that is suitable to your project.

Installing the Marine Dyke

After arriving on site, the Marine Dyke should be
handled carefully to avoid any damage resulting from
the use of the heavy equipment. If not installed
immediately, the Marine Dyke must be stored
properly, and should not be exposed directly to
sunlight and existing ground.
After opening the packaging, the Marine Dyke
should be immediately taken to the installation site,
then placed and filled at the predetermined location.

To avoid significant movement while filling, the

Marine Dyke should be held in place with bamboo,
wooden piles or steel frame.
If the installation is performed on land, excavate a
trench in the foundation soil, approximately 50 cm
deep and adjusted to the width of the Marine Dyke.
For installation with bamboo, wooden piles or steel
frame, tie the Marine Dyke to the pile or frame,
then when the required position is set, fill the Marine
Dyke evenly until it sinks and sits on the seabed,
then untie from pile or frame and lift the steel frame
or remove the pile, and then continue pumping until
the Marine Dyke is full.

Before installing the Marine Dyke make sure that

the seabed was safe from things that can damage the
Marine Dyke. If it is not possible to be cleared, it
would require a protection layer under the Marine
Dyke, which can be made of a layer of sand, tube
mattress, or non-woven geotextile.
If necessary, after filling the Marine Dyke a nonwoven geotextile can be added to protect from UV
and foreign object damage.

Steel Frame
2) Marine Dyke installation under the water using
Bamboo or Timber Pile
3) Marine Dyke installation on land
