Vanity Fair on Monday released the cover of its July issue in which Caitlyn Jenner
publicly presents herself as a woman for the rst time.
The cover features a picture of Jenner shot by photographer Annie Leibovitz.
A 22-page story written by Buzz Bissinger that accompanies the cover details
the struggles the former Olympian experienced during her transition from a man into
a woman that include a panic attack the day after undergoing facial surgery. The article titled
Call Me Caitlyn also contains additional photos of Jenner that Leibovitz took.
LGBT rights advocates were quick to applaud Jenner.
For a transgender person to step into the world as his or her authentic self is a moment of tremendous freedom, said
GLAAD Director of Programs for Transgender Media Nick Adams. The world can now see what Caitlyn Jenner has always known, that
she is and always has been a woman.

and a half away but candidates from
both parties continue to announce
their campaigns in an increasingly
crowded eld.
Former Maryland Gov. Martin
OMalley entered the race on
Saturday, announcing he will
challenge front-runner Hillary Clinton

for the Democratic nomination.
Standing before supporters in
Federal Hill Park on a sweltering
May morning, OMalley declared he
was running for president in the city
where he served as mayor from 1999
to 2007 and the state where he served
as governor from 2007 until this year.
The story of our countrys best

Clinton supporters plan 2 D.C. Pride fundraisers

presidential campaign are scheduled
to take place on successive nights on
June 10 and 11 in Washington, with the
second one to include appearances
by U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.)
and four of her gay colleagues in the
U.S. House.
That June 11 event is an ocial event
of the Hillary for America campaign
and is being co-hosted by D.C. gay
Democratic activist Peter Rosenstein
along with 22 other prominent LGBT
rights advocates who signed on as
co-hosts. Among them are former
Human Rights Campaign presidents
Joe Solmonese and Elizabeth Birch
and former Gay and Lesbian Victory
Fund CEO Chuck Wolfe.

The other event set for June 10 is being organized by gay Democratic activist
Lane Hudson as a low dollar, grassroots fundraiser thats not an ocial event
of the Clinton campaign. Hudson is promoting it on Facebook as a Hillary for
D.C. Pride Edition More Dance Party, Less Fundraiser. The admission price is
$20.16, and it will be held at D.C.s historic Howard Theatre.
What Im intending to create is a new kind of event that targets folks that
arent traditional political donors and tries to turn them into repeat donors,
Hudson told the Blade. He said he would announce in the next few days the
names of some prominent ocials who will attend as special guests.
Among those scheduled to attend the June 11 event as special guests, in
addition to Baldwin, are out gay U.S. Reps. Jared Polis (D-Colo.), David Cicilline
(D-R.I.), Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.), and Mark Takano (D-Calif.). Also scheduled
to attend is U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.), a strong LGBT rights ally.
Others who have endorsed the event and signed on as hosts are LGBT rights
leaders Aisha Moodie-Mills, the current CEO of the Victory Fund; Scott Fay; Winnie
Stachelberg; Tom Sheridan; Robert Raben; Claire Lucas; and Judy Dlugacz.
Rosenstein said the Clinton campaign is organizing its own low-cost fundraiser
in D.C. thats scheduled for June 23 with a $20 admission. He said its not a specic
LGBT event but organizers are reaching out to the LGBT community to attend.

Del. school board member resigns over homosexual agenda
A minister serving on the Board of Education for the Indian River School
District in Sussex County, Delaware resigned from that position on May 27 in
protest over what he says is his fellow board members acquiescence to the
homosexual agenda, according to DelmarvaNow, an online publication.
Ive decided to resign because of acquiescence to the homosexual agenda
within the district, the publication quoted Shaun Fink, pastor of Cornerstone
Bible Church in Millsboro, Del., as saying.
Theyre ne people, but either they condone the homosexual integration or
theyre unwilling to stand against it, the publication quoted him as saying.
Supporters of a recently adopted health curriculum for grades 8 through 12
that includes discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity have told the
board including such terms in the curriculum was important for LGBT students
who often struggle over the stigma of being dierent.
The school district includes the cities of Georgetown, Bethany Beach, Millsboro
and other areas not far from Rehoboth Beach, a summer resort community
popular with the LGBT community.

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. A mundane
workshop meeting of the Rehoboth Beach
Board of Commissioners took a heated
and emotional turn on Friday as residents
and visitors including a group of about
10 gay men criticized the mayor and
commissioners, with one property owner
threatening a lawsuit against the town.
The meeting was intended to focus on
a controversial swimming pool ordinance
that would, among other new regulations,
require homeowners to obtain a license for
residential pools. Mayor Sam Cooper and
some commissioners support a crackdown
on residential pools because they claim large
rental houses with pools are generating too
much noise. Repeated citations for noise
complaints could lead to revocation of pool
licenses. A vote on the proposal could come
later in June with implementation delayed
until next summer.
But as the commissioners were
debating minor details of the measure
on Friday, members of the audience were
eager to change the subject to another
controversial ordinance. That measure,
which went into eect this year, allows
police to issue citations for plainly audible
noise, a standard that critics claim is too
vague and allows for frivolous complaints.
We want to discuss the noise
ordinance, said one man from New York.
We feel unfairly targeted the increasing
restrictions are diminishing my interest
in coming here. He was part of a group
of gay men who attended the meeting
together that included D.C. resident and
activist Lane Hudson, who also spoke.
The people who vacation here are part
of your community, Hudson said. We do
contribute to the town.
Edward Chrzarowski, who lives in D.C.
and owns a home in Rehoboth, accused
the commissioners of dividing the city
with the new ordinances.
Its sad, he said, I was told Im not
welcome on my own street.
Chrzarowski said there are about 15-
20 retirees who regularly complain about

noise in the town and they have the ear of
the mayor. He said houses with pools were
targeted over Memorial Day Weekend.
But the protests from the audience
failed to impress Cooper and others,
who held rm that noise from residential
pools must be contained.
We are a residential community rst,
said Commissioner Lorraine Zellars. This
is our tipping point. We need to decide
what kind of community we want to be.
Motioning to the group of gay men in the
audience, she continued, We have rules
you have to follow them in New York
and D.C., but this is our home. All are
welcome, visit us anytime.
Zellars echoed concerns raised by
Cooper about noise and the rise of
large homes with up to eight bedrooms,
swimming pools and other amenities
found in hotels.
The pools are the tipping point
whats the dierence between a home
and a hotel, asked Cooper.
People are running hotels in residential
neighborhoods, said Commissioner
Patrick Gossett, whos gay. People live
here year-round and more and more are
retiring here.
One rental property owner who spoke
at the meeting angrily threatened the
commissioners and mayor with a lawsuit
if they proceed with the pool restrictions.
He said the pool ordinance would cost
him money if he cant oer renters the
amenity. If that happens, he promised to
organize other property owners around
an eort to overturn the ordinance
through a lawsuit.
The sometimes angry and emotional
meeting followed an incident over
Memorial Day Weekend in which police
were called to Poodle Beach, a popular
gay beach. Police issued eight citations
six for public consumption of alcohol
and two for public urination triggering
complaints among some gay beachgoers
of discriminatory treatment. Others who
were on the beach described a scene of
younger gay men littering, urinating in the
dunes and openly drinking alcohol. The
story led to a urry of social media posts
last week, many pitting older gay men who
have been frequenting Poodle for years
against younger gays new to the town.

Lukewarm response to OMalley presidential bid

Uses gay rights as little
more than a political prop

Marylands gay and lesbian lawmakers
appear less than enthusiastic about
former Gov. Martin OMalleys 2016
presidential campaign that he formally
announced on Saturday.
State Del. Anne Kaiser (D-Montgomery
County) said she admires any citizen,
politician or otherwise who has the
courage to run for oce, whether it be
local alderman or the highest oce in the
land. The Montgomery County Democrat
noted to the Washington Blade that she
will endorse former Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton, who formally kicked o
her 2016 presidential campaign in April.
By announcing his candidacy, Martin
is giving Democrats a choice, which is
good for the party, for the citizens of this
great nation and enriches democracy as a
whole, Kaiser told the Blade.
Former state Del. Heather Mizeur
(D-Montgomery County) on Monday
declined to comment. State Dels.
Luke Clippinger (D-Baltimore City),
Mary Washington (D-Baltimore City),
and Bonnie Cullison (D-Montgomery
County) and state Sen. Rich Madaleno
(D-Montgomery County) did not return
the Blades emails on the subject.

and could not be reached for comment.
OMalley
during
his
campaign
announcement listed signing laws that
extended marriage rights to same-sex
couples and in-state tuition to undocumented
immigrants as among the key legislative
accomplishments of his two terms in oce.
He played an active role in the campaign
in support of the same-sex marriage law
ahead of the November 2012 referendum
on it, attending fundraisers and appearing
at numerous events. OMalley in May 2014
signed Marylands transgender rights law
that took eect last October.
Jonathan Jayes-Green, a gay man from
Panam who Equality Maryland and Casa de
Maryland featured in a campaign to garner
additional support for the states same-sex
marriage law and Dream Act that extended
in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants,
was among those who introduced OMalley
at his campaign announcement.
We could not be more proud of
Jonathan, said Carrie Evans, executive
director of Equality Maryland, a statewide
LGBT advocacy group. He has become an
important voice and leader in both the LGBT
and immigrant communities of Maryland.
Evans told the Blade that her organization
is also grateful for the governors leadership
over the past few years on LGBT issues.

Without his passion and dedication we
would not have won marriage equality in
Maryland, she said. We know that he
will carry his steadfast commitment to
our issues with him as he moves into his
next political chapter.
Sharon Brackett, president of Gender
Rights Marylands board of directors,

noted that OMalley has an actual record
on supporting and seeing legislation
passed on LGBT issues that includes
signing the states rst trans ordinance in
2002 when he was mayor of Baltimore.
Governor OMalley is the rst presidential
candidate to talk about the importance of
transgender rights at his announcement,

Haley Morris, a spokesperson for OMalleys
campaign, told the Blade on Wednesday.
He is running to make sure that the dignity
of every individual is a priority for our
nation as a whole.

Marine biologist Kristian Fauchald dies at 79

Local LGBT advocate spent
35 years at Smithsonian

Kristian Fauchald, a marine biologist internationally
recognized for his research on behalf of the Smithsonian
Institutions National Museum of Natural History and a
longtime supporter of LGBT rights, died April 4 at George
Washington University Hospital. He was 79.
His husband, Leonard Hirsch, said the cause of death
was complications associated with the sudden onset of a
bronchial and heart-related condition.
Fauchald most recently served as Research Zoologist
Emeritus at the Smithsonians Natural History Museum,
where he continued his lifes work of studying a family of
ocean living worms known as Polychaetous Annelids.
During his tenure of more than 35 years at the
Smithsonian, Fauchald traveled to oceans throughout the
world collecting samples of the marine organisms he and his
collaborators studied. His scientic papers and two books
considered groundbreaking in his eld have been credited
with advancing the worlds knowledge of ocean ecosystems.
He impacted people around the world and in this country,
of course students, scientists and LGBT folks, Hirsch said.
He was a truly outstanding human being.
Fauchald was born in Norway in 1935. He received Norways
equivalent of bachelor and masters degrees at the University
of Bergen before moving to California in 1965, where he
entered and completed a doctorate degree program at the
University of Southern California at Los Angeles.
In 1969, he became assistant professor of biology at USC
and a short time later he was appointed curator of marine
annelids at the California-based Allan Hancock Foundation,
according to a write-up on Fauchalds career and life
prepared by Hirsch and several of Fauchalds friends.
The write-up by Fauchalds friends says Fauchald moved to
D.C. in 1979 to begin what became a 35-year association with
the Smithsonian Institutions Museum of Natural History.
His rst position there in 1979 was with the museums
Department of Invertebrate Zoology.
He also involved himself in the gay community in the
District, initiating rap sessions at the Gay Community Center
on Church Street, the write-up says. He was active in the
early days of the D.C. Adventuring Group [a gay outdoors
organization].
Hirsch said he and Fauchald met in 1983 and became
domestic partners in 2001. They bought and began renovating
a house on Q Street, N.W. in 1984, the write-up says, that
became known as gay central for LGBT organizations and
causes as well as a gathering place for the couples extended

circle of friends they considered to be family.

Fauchald and Hirsch married in California in 2008.
Hirsch said that during his years at the Smithsonian,
Fauchald played an important role in helping Hirsch carry
out Hirschs duties as president of Federal GLOBE, an
organization that represents LGBT federal employees.
Beyond his own scientic research, Kristian was a mentor
for many, and the Q Street home became a haven to a long list
of biologists, the write-up says. His deep knowledge of worms
and the breadth of philosophy constantly urged inquiry, it says.
He was always willing to listen, and the esteem with which
he is held in the scientic community can be seen in the over
30 species named for him! says the write-up by his friends.
In a recently published obituary for Fauchald in the
scientic publication World Register of Marine Species, for
which Fauchald was a founding editor, the publication printed
the names of all of the species bearing his name, including
the most recent one in 2013 called Chirimia fauchaldi Light.
In addition to Hirsch, Fauchald is survived by his brothers
Jens and Per Fauchald of Norway along with their wives and
his numerous nieces and nephews.
Smithsonian ocials and Fauchalds longtime associates
and friends were expected to pay special tribute to him on
July 1 when they celebrate International Polychaete Day,
which falls on Fauchalds 80th birthday. Polchaetes are a
class of marine worms that Fauchald devoted much of his
life to studying.

Women plead guilty in Donovan Hotel stabbing death

Charge lowered to seconddegree murder in plea deal

A woman charged in the stabbing death
of D.C. attorney David Messerschmitt at
the Donovan Hotel on Feb. 9 pleaded
guilty in D.C. Superior Court last week to
second-degree murder while armed.
Jamyra Gallmon, 21, has admitted to
stabbing Messerschmitt multiple times
in his hotel room following a scheme to
rob him by pretending to be a man while
answering an ad he placed on Craigslist
seeking to meet another man for sex.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Shana L. Fulton,
the lead prosecutor in the case, disclosed
in Thursdays plea hearing that Gallmon
sent Messerschmitt, 30, a photo of a mans
torso as part of her email response to his
Craigslist ad, prompting Messerschmitt to
invite a person he thought was a man to
his hotel room.
Gallmon entered the unlocked hotel
room wearing a hooded jacket and a
covering over the bottom half of her
face, Fulton told the court. When she
attempted to rob Messerschmitt he
fought back, and she stabbed him at least
seven times in his chest, groin area, arm,
and back, according to Fulton and a police
arrest adavit.
At the time of her arrest in April,
Gallmon told police she stabbed
Messerschmitt in self-defense after he
tried to prevent her from leaving the
room and started ghting with her.
Detectives reported in the arrest adavit
that she said her violent reaction was due
in part to a ashback to a past incident in
which she was assaulted.
Plea agreement documents led in court
last week say Gallmon agreed to plead guilty
in response to an oer by prosecutors to
lower the charge against her from rstdegree murder while armed to seconddegree murder while armed. The agreement
calls for prosecutors to recommend to the
judge that she receive a sentence in the
range of 18 to 25 years in prison.
Superior Court Judge Michael Ryan,
who is not bound by the sentencing
recommendation, scheduled a sentencing
hearing for Aug. 14. The maximum
penalty for second-degree murder is 40
years in jail.
Also pleading guilty at the same court
hearing was Dominique Johnson, 19, who
prosecutors identied in court papers
as Gallmons roommate and girlfriend.
Police charged Johnson with conspiracy
to commit robbery on grounds that
she assisted Gallmon with plans to rob
Messerschmitt but was not responsible
for his murder.
JAMYRA GALLMON pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed in connection with

Fulton presented this information as
part of the evidence the government
would have presented in a trial had
Gallmon and Johnson not chosen to
plead guilty. The plea agreement, which
the two women signed under the advice
of their attorneys, required them to
arm that the evidence presented by
the government during Thursdays court
hearing is true.
Among other things, Fulton told the
court that Johnson rode with Gallmon by
Metro from their apartment in Southeast
D.C. to the Donovan Hotel on the night
of the murder. Fulton noted that before
Gallmon entered the hotel she and
Johnson entered a CVS store across the
street from the hotel where the two
purchased a package of zip ties, which
Gallmon planned to use to facilitate her
planned robbery of Messerschmitt.
A police arrest adavit for Gallmon says
police found Messerschmitts ngers tied
together with multi-colored zip ties at the
time they found his body in the hotel room.
In her presentation of the governments
evidence, Fulton told the court that Gallmon
stole from Messerschmitts hotel room his
cell phone and his SmarTrip Metro card.
She said Johnson, who did not enter the
hotel, rode home with Gallmon on a Metro
Bus and that Johnson used the stolen

Metro card for the next six weeks.
Gallmon and Johnson repeatedly
answered by stating yes when Ryan
asked them if they agreed that the
allegations presented by Fulton were true
and they understood they were waiving
their right to a jury trial by pleading guilty.
Our hearts go out to everyone who

knew and loved David Messerschmitt,
said Acting U.S. Attorney Vincent H.
Cohen, Jr., in a statement.
It is outrageous that a young man with
such a promising future was murdered
over a cell phone and a Metro card, he
said. We can only hope that the rapid
apprehension and conviction of those
responsible for his death will help his
loved ones nd some sense of peace.
LGBT activists following the case
have expressed concern that it had
the markings of a so-called gay pickup
murder, which both police and gay
community advocates have said involves
perpetrators who target gay men by
pretending to be interested in a sexual
tryst. The perpetrators, who trick a
victim into inviting them to their home
or another meeting place, rob and
sometimes kill the gay victims.
At the time of Gallmons arrest D.C.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier issued an
appeal to the public asking people to
contact police if they were contacted by
or victimized by someone using the email
address that Gallmon used to respond
to Messerschmitts Craigslist ad
chrissanchez0906@yahoo.com.
We want to know if there are any other
victims of crimes out there connected
through this email, Lanier said.
Department of Labor to honor Kameny

The U.S. Department of Labor has announced it will induct the late gay rights
pioneer Frank Kameny into its Hall of Honor at a ceremony in Washington on June 23
in recognition of his decades of work to end discrimination in the federal workplace.
In a May 27 statement, the department recounted Kamenys work in
Washington on behalf of the rights of LGBT people after government ocials
red him from his job as an astronomer at the U.S. Army Map Service in 1958
when they discovered he was gay.
Frank Kameny was a groundbreaking leader in the LGBT civil rights
movement, said Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez in the statement. He
fought tirelessly to live out his truth and to end workplace discrimination, Perez
said. At the Department of Labor we work every day to carry on his legacy and
ensure that all workers, no matter who they are or who they love, have equal
access to opportunity.
With a doctorate degree in astronomy from Harvard University, Kameny
became the rst known gay person to ght his dismissal on grounds of his sexual
orientation. He appealed his case to the U.S. Supreme Court, which refused to
consider it on the merits, leaving in place the then Civil Service Commissions
ban on federal employment of homosexuals.
The setback led him to become a co-founder of the rst gay rights organization
in Washington, D.C., and began his tireless ght to force the nations largest
employer the federal government to end discrimination in its employment
practices based on sexual orientation, the departments statement says.
The induction ceremony for Kameny, who died in 2011 at the age of 86,
is scheduled to take place at the Department of Labors Francis Perkins
headquarters building in Washington. Hundreds are expected to attend and
hear remembrances and tributes by honored speakers and guests, the
statement says.

Biden, son of Vice President Joe Biden,
died on Saturday of brain cancer at
the age of 46.
Biden whose father is Vice

in D.C. where he had been for more

2006. He and his unit were deployed

Miss. gay advocate resigns after anti-trans rant

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. The executive director of a Mississippi LGBT advocacy
group has resigned after making a series of anti-trans comments on his social
media pages.
Je White, who founded the Mississippi Gulf Coast Rainbow Center nearly two years
ago, issued a statement on May 29 that indicated his resignation was immediate.
My prayer is that this community learns to stop devouring each other like
ravenous jackals when we need to come together to ght the wrongdoings and
injustices being committed against us, he wrote.
Planet Transgender, a website that covers trans issues, on May 31 published a
series of transphobic posts that he made on his Facebook page.
I am not a cis person, wrote White in one post. I am a mother fucking gay man.
Adair Beany, president of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Rainbow Centers board
of directors, on May 30 issued a statement on behalf of his organization.

through picking up the pieces over the coming weeks, he said. We know that
with your support and a shared commitment to addressing the issues that our
community faces we will come back stronger than ever.
White is among the LGBT rights advocates the Washington Blade interviewed

Sam signs with Montreal Alouettes

MONTREAL Michael Sam last month signed a two-year contract with a
professional Canadian football team.
The Montreal Alouettes, which is a team with the Canadian Football League,
on May 22 announced they had signed the gay defensive end. Sam on his Twitter
page said he was very excited and proud to be joining the team.
Sam, a former University of Missouri defensive end, came out in February
2014 during a series of interviews with the New York Times and ESPN.
He became the rst openly gay man drafted into the National Football League
three months later when the St. Louis Rams picked him during the seventh
round of the draft.
The team released Sam before the start of the regular season. The Dallas
Cowboys last October cut the gay defensive end from its practice squad.

celebrations this month, but noted that
more work remains.
In an exclusive statement to the
Washington Blade, the former secretary of
state recognized June as Pride month, calling
for a rededication to complete the work of
improving the lives of people everywhere.
Each June, we honor the contributions
of the LGBTQ community and proudly
rearm our commitment to ensuring
that every member of the American family
can live, work, and marry the person they
love without enduring discrimination
or prejudice, Clinton said. As we
celebrate the hard-fought progress that
has been made toward advancing the
rights of LGBTQ Americans, we must
also recognize that this work is far from
nished. I hope that each and every one
of us will dedicate ourselves to building a
future in which every person can live in
dignity, free from violence or fear, free
to be themselves, free to live up to their
God-given potential no matter where
they live or who they are this month
and every month.
Clinton made the statement on the
same day she issued a message via Twitter
hinting that, like many LGBT Americans,
shes awaiting good news from the
Supreme Court on same-sex marriage.
This month, justices are expected to issue
a decision on whether same-sex couples
have a right to marry nationwide.

former Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley nor
U.S. Sen. Bernard Sanders (I-Vt.) other
Democratic candidates in the race had
issued statements this year recognizing
June as Pride month, nor had any of the
Republican presidential candidates.
Clinton, who enjoys considerable
support in the LGBT community, issued
the statement shortly after calling on
the Supreme Court to issue a nationwide
ruling in favor of same-sex marriage.
Shes also spoken out against religious
freedom measures in Indiana and
Arkansas seen to enable discrimination
against LGBT people.
Among her achievements on behalf of
the LGBT community as a U.S. senator
are advocating for the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act and twice voting
against a U.S. constitutional amendment
that would have barred same-sex
marriage throughout the country.
During her tenure as secretary of state,
Clinton coined the phrase gay rights are
human rights during a Pride celebration
at the State Department and delivered a
high-prole speech in Geneva in favor of
LGBT human rights across the globe.
But Clinton didnt articulate support for
same-sex marriage until 2013 and before
that time said her position was that she
opposed gay nuptials. In a later interview
with National Public Radio, she advocated
a state-by-state approach to advancing
marriage rights for same-sex couples.
Two weeks before oral arguments at the
Supreme Court, Clinton made clear she
believes same-sex couples should have
aconstitutional right to marry.
According to a Clinton aide, sta and
volunteers are set to participate in a number
of Pride events and parades throughout the
country during the month of June.

President Obama reected on progress in LGBT issues in the past year on Friday in
his annual proclamation declaring June as Pride month, saying the LGBT community
throughout history has worked to improve the country.
During Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, we celebrate the proud
legacy LGBT individuals have woven into the fabric of our Nation, we honor those who
have fought to perfect our Union, and we continue our work to build a society where
every child grows up knowing that their country supports them, is proud of them, and
has a place for them exactly as they are, Obama writes.
Among the accomplishments cited in the past year is the taking eect of his executive order
he signed last year barring anti-LGBT workplace discrimination among federal contractors.
The Federal Government is now leading by example, ensuring that our employees and
contractors are judged by the quality of their work, not by who they love, Obama said.
Without naming any particular bill by name, Obama said hell continue to call on
Congress to pass legislation so that all Americans are covered by these protections, no
matter where they work.

Gay hotelier donated $2,700 to Cruz campaign

A gay hotelier who hosted U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) at his Manhattan penthouse
last month donated $2,700 to his presidential campaign.
The New York Times last week reported that Ian Reisner made the donation around the
time he and Mati Weiderpass hosted the Republican presidential candidate at their apartment.
Reisner who owns the Out NYC, a gay-oriented hotel on Manhattans West Side and
purchased the Pavilion nightclub and other commercial properties in Fire Island Pines,
New York, in January for $10.1 million had insisted the dinner was not a fundraiser.
The event at which Cruz appeared took place roughly six months after Sean Verdi, who
managed a now closed gay bar in Manhattan, died from a suspected drug overdose
after he was found unconscious in a bathtub in Reisner and Weiderpass apartment.
Reisner told the New York Times in a statement that he wrote the $2,700 check to
Cruz to show my support for his work on behalf of Israel. The gay hotelier noted
he asked the campaign to return his money once he realized his donation could be
misconstrued as supporting his anti-gay marriage agenda.
In the interest of transparency, I gave Senator Cruz a $2,700 check to show my support
for his work on behalf of Israel, Reisner told the New York Times. When I realized his
donation could be misconstrued as supporting his anti-gay marriage agenda, I asked for
the money back. Senator Cruzs oce gave the money back, and I have no intention of
giving any money to any politicians who arent in support of LGBT issues.
Representatives of Cruzs presidential campaign did not immediately respond to the
Washington Blades request for comment.
The Blade on Friday contacted Reisner for comment, and he provided the same
statement he issued to the New York Times.

N.C. lawmakers may override veto of anti-gay bill

The North Carolina Legislature is headed toward overriding Gov. Pat McCrorys veto of
legislation that would allow magistrates to opt out of performing same-sex marriages.
Ahead of an anticipated ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court on whether same-sex
couples have a constitutional right to marry, McCrory last week vetoed the legislation,
Senate Bill 2, after the legislature approved the bill, saying he was acting in an eort to
defend the Constitution.
But Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger put the bill to avote in his chamber
Media reports this week indicated

that former House Speaker Dennis
Hastert (R-Ill.) agreed to pay a man
$3.5 million to not disclose allegations
of sexual misconduct against him.
Tribune Media, which owns
the Chicago Tribune and other
newspapers, cited an ocial familiar
with the federal charges brought
against Hastert who said the alleged
sexual misconduct took place when
the Illinois Republican was a high
school teacher and wrestling coach.
The source described the nature of
Hasterts relationship with the man

The revelations came a day after
federal prosecutors in Chicago
indicted Hastert on charges that
he violated banking laws when he
withdrew large amounts of money
from his bank accounts in order
to compensate for and conceal his
prior misconduct against someone
identied in the indictment as
Individual A. Authorities allege the
Illinois Republican had already made
$1.7 million in cash payments.
Former House Speaker DENNIS HASTERT
Hastert has also been charged with
lying to the FBI.
Hastert, 73, was rst elected to the House of Representatives in 1986. The Illinois
Republican served as House Speaker from 1999 until he left Congress in 2007.
Hastert in 2004 voted in support of a proposal that sought to dene marriage
in the U.S. Constitution as between a man and a woman. He faced criticism
two years later over the way he and other leading House Republicans handled
allegations that then-Florida Congressman Mark Foley was sending sexually
explicit emails and messages to male congressional pages.
Foley resigned in September 2006 after Hastert threatened to expel him from
Congress.

in the North Carolina Legislature, three-fths of the members present must vote
armatively on the bill in both chambers.
The bill now heads to the House, where the vote on passing the bill to move it to the
governors desk, 66-44, was exactly the margin that would be necessary to override the
legislation if all legislators are present. In the event an override vote takesplace in the
House, LGBT advocates in North Carolina say it would be close.
The legislation would enable magistrates and registers of deeds to opt out of providing
legal marriage services or issuing marriage licenses for a six-month period to same-sex
couples or any couple based on a religious objection.
Also this week, the Alabama State Senate passed by a vote of 22-3 legislation that
would remove the state from the business of issuing marriage licenses via probate
judges altogether. Under the legislation, Senate Bill 377, couples would instead take a
contract witnessed by a couples pastor.
The legislation heads to the House, where a committee hearing was scheduled on

court decisions in favor of same-sex marriage, LGBT advocates arent mounting a fullscale assault against it.
Susan Watson, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama,
said her organization has bigger sh to fry than SB 377.

her familys name, described Jenner as
beautiful on her Twitter page.

Not everyone reacted positively to
Jenners transition.
Drake Bell, a former Nickelodeon
star, tweeted that he would still refer
to Jenner by her birth name. Zoey Tur,
a transgender woman who appeared
on Inside Edition earlier this year as
a correspondent, described the Vanity
Fair article and spread as a highly
professional roll out of a product during
an interview with CNNs Erin Burnett.

The Associated Press also misgendered
Jenner in its initial reporting on the issue.
Jenners appearance on the cover of
Vanity Fair comes less than two months
after ABC broadcast Diane Sawyers longanticipated interview with her in which
the former Olympian and reality star
came out as trans.
For all intents and purposes I am a
woman, Jenner told Sawyer. People
look at me dierently. They see you as
this macho male, but my heart and my

soul and everything I do in my life it is
part of me. That female side of me is part
of me. Thats who I am.
Jenner at the time of the interview
continued to use male pronouns.
Trans advocates with whom the Blade
spoke earlier this year about Jenners
transition before she conrmed it for
the rst time noted the former Olympian
and reality show star benets from her

nancial status.
Trudylynne OBrien, a trans advocate
in Norfolk, Va., in February described
Jenner as a very fortunate person who
has the nances to be able to aord
to do anything that she wants. Kylar
Broadus, director of the National LGBTQ
Task Forces Transgender Civil Rights
Project, on Monday noted in response
to the Vanity Fair cover that trans people

and particularly those of color are
more likely to be unemployed or live in
poverty than the general population.
When any high-proled gure comes
out as transgender, it can help highlight the
challenges transgender people face every
day all across the nation, said Broadus.
The realities that transgender people
experience in America is truly alarming.
Gay-only policy change at Pentagon raises questions about trans service

For the rst time since controversy erupted in 2007
over the removal of transgender protections from the
Employment Non-Discrimination Act, an arm of the federal
government is poised to enact protections based solely on
sexual orientation and LGBT advocates are largely keeping
quiet about the lack of trans inclusion.
Last week, a senior defense ocial speaking on condition
of anonymity, told the Washington Blade the Pentagon is
poised to include the phrase sexual orientation in the
Military Equal Opportunity Program, the policy that prohibits
discrimination against certain classes of individuals in the
U.S. military.
According to the ocial, the proposed change is set to
be delivered as early as the middle of next week to Defense
Secretary Ashton Carter for his approval and the policy
change could take eect as soon as the end of this month.
Following repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell, gay rights advocates
began pushing for the change to ensure non-discrimination
protections for gay service members newlyable to serve openly
in the U.S. military. As of right now, service members have no
recourse for anti-gay discrimination outside of their chain of
command.
But the senior defense ocial said transgender people,
who are barred from serving openly in the U.S. military
because of a medical regulation, wont be included in
the policy change. The Pentagon didnt evaluate gender
identity as part of the Military Equal Opportunity Program
update, but is looking at what further updates may be
appropriate as it continues to consider transgender policy
writ large, the ocial said.
The announcement of a planned change follows a public
letter led by U.S. Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Tammy
Baldwin (D-Wis.) calling on the Pentagon to add sexual
orientation to the Military Equal Opportunity policy as part of
the ongoing review of the program. The letter didntmention
transgender inclusion in the non-discrimination policy or call
for lifting the ban onopenly transgender service members.
One week after the letter became public, Matthew Thorn,
interim executive director of OutServe-SLDN, an LGBT
military group that has been newly revamped after a period
of dormancy, sent his own letter to Murphy and Baldwin
dated May 28 and obtained by the Blade expressing
concerns about the omission of transgender people from
the senators letter.
When we separate our community into subgroups, we do
a disservice to the advancement of all LGBT rights, Thorn
wrote. For as long as gay, lesbian and bisexual members
of the armed services were denied serving openly our trans
brothers and sisters are still being denied from openly
serving. In excluding transgender protections change to the
Sen. TAMMY BALDWIN (D-Wis.) has called on the Pentagon to

add sexual orientation to the Military Equal Opportunity policy.
anti-discrimination policy to make it more inclusive means

that the transgender community has to wait once again. Our
nation needs a unied and unequivocal policy that all LGBT
service members be included and protected.
Thorn later told the Blade his organization would support
the Military Equal Opportunity policy in the event the
Pentagon makes a sexual orientation-only change, but it is
a disservice to the transgender community when we dont
include them in all of our discussions.
Chris Harris, a Murphy spokesperson, in response to the
OutServe-SLDN letter expanded upon an earlier statement
saying the senators behind the eort remain committed to
transgender people serving openly in the U.S. military.
This letter was meant to close the book on the repeal
of Dont Ask, Dont Tell by urging the Pentagon to nally
update its equal opportunity policies and ban discrimination
on the basis of sexual orientation, Harris said. Expanding
rights and opportunities for transgender Americans seeking
to serve their country is hugely important, and Sens.
Murphy and Baldwin look forward to working with the LGBT
community to advocate for full, open service.

3 more candidates jump into 2016 White House race

for president of the United States, and

Im running for you.
At the side of the stage where he spoke
were signs bearing the campaign logo
and its slogan: New Leadership.
Throughout his speech, the 52-yearold OMalley emphasized the upcoming
American generation a possible
reference to the 17-year age dierence
between him and Clinton. Healso carried
a message of economic populism and
pledged to rein in Wall Street.
We are allowing our land of opportunity
to be turned into a land of inequality,
OMalley said. Main Street struggles,
while Wall Street soars. Tell me how it
is, that not a single Wall Street CEO was
convicted of a crime related to the 2008
economic meltdown not a single one.
Declaring his candidacy in the
aftermath of the Baltimore riots that
gained nationwide attention, OMalley
said the scourge of hopelessness that
happened to ignite those acts was a
symptom of the problems facing the
entire country.
Federal policy initiatives that OMalley
said he would seek to achieve as
president include climate legislation,
comprehensive immigration reform,
reinstating the Glass-Steagall Act and
breaking up banks deemed too big to fail.
OMalley is credited with being a voice
for the LGBT community during his
tenure as Maryland governor. In addition
to signing into law a bill legalizing
same-sex marriage in 2012, he took
part in campaign eorts to protect the
measure when it came before voters
in a referendum. Additionally, OMalley
signed into law last year a bill adding
protections for transgender people to
the states civil rights law.
Critics of OMalley say he wasnt on board
with marriage equality until later during his
tenure as governor and initially favored
civil unions at a time when LGBT advocates
were pushing for full marriage rights.
At several points during his speech,
OMalley referenced his support for the
LGBT community and LGBT rights. Upon
mentioning the DREAM Act and marriage
equality as among the policy initiatives he
accomplished as governor, the audience
erupted in applause.
Listing numerous groups within the
country, OMalley identied gay, lesbian,
transgender and straight Americans and
said, every person is important, each of
us is needed.
Introducing OMalley before his
remarks were four Maryland residents
who said they beneted from his policies
as governor. Two of the speakers
identied advancements in LGBT rights
under OMalley as having a positive
impact on their lives.
Sen. LINDSEY GRAHAM announced his bid for the White House this week.
Jonathan Jayes-Green, who identied

as LGBT and a Panama native who came
to the United States at age 13, said his
family lost legal immigration status after
their visas expired. As such, Jayes-Green
said he was aided both by the legalization
of same-sex marriage in Maryland and
the DREAM Act, which made certain
undocumented immigrants in Maryland
eligible for in-state tuition at the states
public colleges.
Nov. 6, 2012 was one of the most
emotional days of my life because I felt
the entire state validated my identity
when it overwhelmingly approved of
both marriage equality and the DREAM
Act, Jayes-Green said. Because of that,
I want to say, Thank you, Gov. OMalley.
Thank you for ghting for the dignity and
the respect of families like mine.
Joseph Weinstein-Avery, a rising
senior at Johns Hopkins University whos
studying political science, said OMalleys
support for marriage equality allowed his
lesbian parents to marry in the state.
Im here today because Martin
OMalley led the ght for marriage
equality in Maryland, and he will do the
same for every state and every couple in
this great nation, Weinstein-Avery said.
OMalley faces a signicant challenge
in winning the Democratic nomination,
let alone the White House in 2016. In
some polls, Clinton is 50 points ahead of
the former Maryland governor. Also in
the race for the Democratic nomination
is U.S. Sen. Bernard Sanders (I-Vt.), a selfavowed democratic socialist.
OMalley wasnt the only Democrat who
announced a run this week. Lincoln Chafee,
a former Republican turned independent
turned Democrat, was scheduled to

announce his candidacy for the White
House at a D.C.-area event Wednesday

Republicans,
meanwhile,
got
themselves yet another candidate this
week, as South Carolina Sen. Lindsey
Graham, long the subject of gay rumors,
announced his bid on Monday.
The two-term U.S. senator announced
his presidential bid in a 20-minute speech
in the middle of Main Street in Central,
S.C., the town where he was born in 1959.
Some of you have known me since
my family lived in the back of the bar in
that building, but Im pretty sure no one
here, including me, ever expected to
hear me say, Im Lindsey Graham, and
Im running for president of the United
States, Graham said.
Graham enters a crowded GOP
presidential eld in which no candidate
enjoys a commanding lead, although
former neurosurgeon Ben Carson has
risen in some polls and Wisconsin Gov.
Scott Walker enjoys a seven-point lead in
Iowa, which holds an early caucus.
A major theme of Grahams campaign
announcement was national security
issues. As a U.S. senator, Graham
has spoken out about the dangers of
terrorism and the expansion of the group
known as the Islamic State of Iraq & Syria.
Among the foreign policy positions
Graham articulated were defeating radical
Islam, taking a rm stand against Iran to
prevent the country from obtaining nuclear
weapons and standing up to Russia and
China. Graham also said hed protect
Social Security and Medicare for future
generations, saying federal assistance

helped him and his sister in their youth
after the early death of their parents.
Although Graham didnt explicitly
mention LGBT issues during his
presidential
announcement,
the
candidate, whos an opponent of samesex marriage, vowed to be a voice
for social conservative values without
apology or animosity.
Over the course of his tenure in
Congress, Graham has a voting record
that has earned him the reputation as an
opponent of LGBT rights. In addition to
twice voting in favor of a U.S. constitutional
amendment barring same-sex marriage,
Graham was second only to Sen. John
McCain (R-Ariz.) in being a vocal opponent
of Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal.
In the latest Human Rights Campaign
congressional
scorecard,
Graham
has earned a 0 out of a possible
100 points. The senator lost points
for voting against the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act, in favor of an
amendment to strip the Violence Against
Women Act reauthorization of its LGBT
protections and against the conrmation
of openly gay appointees to the Obama
administration and the judiciary.
Graham has sent mixed signals on a
potential ruling from the U.S. Supreme
Court guaranteeing marriage rights for
same-sex couples across the country. In
January, he told the Washington Blade
he hopes the court will allow each state
to dene marriage within its borders
and indicated his likely support for a
constitutional amendment from Sen. Ted
Cruz (R-Texas) that would prohibit judges
from overturning state marriage laws.
But in May, Graham said on Boston
Herald Radio he doesnt think a
constitutional amendment on marriage
would be successful and expressed a
desire to move forward in the event
the Supreme Court strikes down bans on
same-sex marriage.
Throughout his career, Graham, whos
unmarried, has faced numerous questions
about his sexual orientation. Last year,
Dave Feliciano, an Iraq war veteran who
unsuccessfully challenged Graham for
his U.S. Senate seat in the Republican
primary, referred to Graham during a
news conference as the ambiguously gay
senator from South Carolina.
But Graham has denied hes gay. In a
2010 interview with the New York Times,
Graham sought to put the questions to
rest by making a joke about recently out
singer Ricky Martin.

quoted as saying. I know its really
gonna upset a lot of gay men Im sure
hundreds of em are gonna be jumping
o the Golden Gate Bridge but I aint
available. I aint gay. Sorry.

Protester accuses Charles Village officials of homophobia

Brian Gaither of the Baltimore Homophobia Opposition Network (HON) stood
on the island on Charles Street just outside the Charles Village Festivals footprint
on May 30 donning a rainbow boa and pink-framed sunglasses, playing Erasure
on his boom box and handing out iers to festival goers.
The ier that was titled WANTED FOR HOMOPHOBIA included the
photographs of ve key individuals who went on record opposing the liquor
license transfer requested by the new owners of the Baltimore Eagle a leather
bar located on the corner of Charles and 21st streets at a key liquor board
hearing in March. In April, the board denied the license transfer request. HON is
not aliated with the Baltimore Eagle and was acting independently.
Gaither also carried a bullhorn, which he used to bellow to all within earshot
the following:
The Charles Village Civic Association, despite the excuses they oer, used
procedural tools to oppose the opening of a gay business in Charles Village. In
so doing the Charles Village Civic Association has made it clear that businesses
catering to the LGBT community are not welcome here. Opposing businesses
which cater to the LGBT community makes me, a Baltimore citizen, feel less
welcome and less safe in Charles Village. Expressing a personal dislike of LGBT
people, whether you say it or you use the neighborhood association to do it, is
the essence of homophobia. Spending your money at the festival today directly
supports the homophobia of the Charles Village Civic Association.
The protest lasted two hours though it had been scheduled for ve hours
each of the two days of the festival. Brendan Coyne, a board member of CVCA,
approached Gaither and told him that it was not the ocial position of the
association to oppose the bar. They both agreed to meet later to discuss the
situation further, and Gaither aborted the protest.
Gaither told the Blade, If Sandy Sparks, the president of the CVCA, (one of the
ve pictured on the ier) was not acting in accordance with the desires of the
rest of the board when she appeared before the Liquor Board to oppose the
transfer of the license, then CVCA should take corrective actions to remedy the
situation and make public their ocial position on the re-opening of the Eagle.
He added, I think of Charles Village as a diverse and inclusive part of Baltimore.
So it was disappointing to watch video of the president of the neighborhood
association go before the Liquor Board and oppose a gay business.
Eorts by the Baltimore Eagles ownership and supporters are underway to
attempt to overturn the liquor boards decision. More than 1,000 signatures
have been gathered from an online petition at TheBaltimoreEagle.com.
The New Black to be screened in Howard

The Howard County Oce of Human Rights, in partnership with PFLAG-Howard
County, Christ UMC and Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia, will
present the lm The New Black on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. The screening and a

Depression linked to risky sex in gay UK men

LONDON HIV-negative gay men who have several symptoms of depression
are more likely to report sex without a condom, according to a study presented
to the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV conference in Glasgow this
week, AIDSmap reports.
Several past studies have shown that poor mental health is frequently
experienced by gay men. Some American studies have found an association
between depression and risky sex, or depression and seroconversion to HIV,
but there has been little data on the issue in HIV-negative gay men in the UK,
AIDSmap reports.
To ll this gap, researchers analyzed data from a recent survey of people
attending sexual health clinics. Only untested or HIV-negative people took part.
Of about 2,000 participants, 1,173 were men who have sex with men who had
had sex in the past three months, researchers reported.
The data presented was cross-sectional, researchers said, meaning it comes
from a single point in time. While it showed a strong association between
depression and risky sex, causality is not known the AIDSmap article said.
Participants median age was 31. The majority were white, had a college degree
and were attending a clinic in London. Just under half were in an ongoing relationship.
Depressive symptoms were measured by a validated tool known as PHQ9, which asks respondents how often they have recently been bothered by
problems such as little interest or pleasure in doing things and feeling that
you are a failure or have let yourself down, the article said.
Based on the answers, 12.5 percent of HIV-negative gay men attending sexual
health clinics had depressive symptoms at the time, considerably higher than
the general population but about half the rate seen for HIV-positive people
in another survey. The symptoms were moderate for most, but 5.5 reported
severe symptoms.
Depression was more common in men who were younger, had money
problems, did not have a university degree and were not in an ongoing
relationship. It was also more common among regular smokers, heavy drinkers
and men who used multiple recreational drugs, AIDSmap reports.
Among those with depressive symptoms, 58 percent said that a doctor had told
them they had a mental health condition and 52 percent were receiving treatment.
Respondents were asked about various measures of intercourse without a
condom in the past three months with anybody (reported by 63 percent of
all men), with two or more partners (reported by 32 percent) and with a partner
of unknown or HIV-positive status (reported by 37 percent), researchers said.
Men with depressive symptoms were more likely to report all of these
behaviors, the AIDSmap article said.

Row as Capital Pride. For months, we meticulously plan our festivities, brainstorm
our oat theme, and gather our most
fashionable rainbow-themed accessories.
Last year, more than 100 Embassy sta
and friends marched with our trolley, emblazoned with our global campaign, Love
is GREAT. This year, we expect even
more people to join us at Capital Pride as
we celebrate D.C.s LGBT community.
Across the United States, our consulates in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New
York City, Houston, Chicago and Miami, as

well as the UK Mission to the UN, will be
hosting Pride activities or marching in local Pride parades.
On the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall riots and on the 40th anniversary of
Capital Pride, the British Embassy is hugely proud of the steps were taking to promote LGBT rights in the UK and around
the world.
A leader in human rights, the UK tops
the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
Trans and Intersex Associations list of
most gay-friendly countries in Europe.
Weve had civil partnerships for almost
a decade, and equal marriage for more
than a year.
Our military is rated the second most
gay-friendly in the world.
And, in a widely supported move, the
mathematician behind the lm Imitation
Game, Alan Turing, received a royal pardon.
While The Advocate recently described
Washington as The Gayest City in America, London is giving its American friends
a run for their money.
Visitors from around the world are
ocking to Britain as the #4 destination
worldwide for LGBT travel and for good
reason. The home of Elton John, Virginia
Woolf, Dusty Springeld and Oscar Wilde

has so much to oer from LGBT-friendly
romantic getaways to world-renowned
nightlife.
Selfridges, the renowned British retailer, recently opened a gender-neutral
shopping space, where you can get kitted
out in a kilt, no matter your gender.
And of course, we have our own parties and festivals dotted across the British Isles. The jewel in the crown is Pride
in London, where as many as 30,000
people march proudly by landmarks such
as Number 10 Downing Street and the
Houses of Parliament.
Even as we celebrate the progress we
are making at home, there are many places around the world where people are
persecuted for who they love.
Britain, like the U.S., has come a long
way in the ght for equality. I hope that
the example set in the UK, and increasingly around the U.S., will encourage other
countries to follow suit. To allow love to
be love, whoever it is between. In the end,
thats what Pride is all about.
So I hope youll join us next week as
we proudly celebrate the dierences that
make us unique, and the love that binds
us all, regardless of age, ethnicity or sexual orientation.

Theres never been more to celebrate at Pride

A time to reect on victories,
rededicate for ghts ahead

Two years after the Supreme Court
struck down the Defense of Marriage Act
as unconstitutional in United States v.
Windsor, there has never been more to
celebrate during Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual
and Transgender Pride Month.
Marriage equality now exists in D.C.
and 37 states, including my home state of
Florida. I was honored to be joined at the
presidents State of the Union Address by
one of the extraordinary newlywed couples, my constituents, who helped lead
the ght to secure same-sex marriage
in the Sunshine State. Later this month,
it will be my distinct privilege to ociate
my rst wedding, and I am overjoyed to
know that this same-sex couple can nally enjoy having their union recognized in
the eyes of the law. To see the happiness
of many more couples, or the beautiful
children theyve brought into the world or
adopted, is a poignant reminder that love

to take us backwards, undoing the

is love and that these ghts make a real
dierence in peoples lives.
Under President Obama, we have put
an end to the discriminatory Dont Ask,
Dont Tell policy that prevented gay and
lesbian Americans from freely and openly serving their country. Congressional
Democrats have added LGBT protections
to the Violence Against Women Act. And
President Obama has signed an executive
order to ban discrimination on the basis
of sexual orientation or identity for federal contractors, extended key benets
to same-sex partners of federal employees and banned discrimination in federal
workplaces based on gender identity.
The American publics support for
same-sex marriage now reaches 60 percent for the rst time in history. And the
referendum legalizing gay marriage in
Ireland is a historic victory that should be

celebrated all over the world.
Unfortunately, these ghts are far from
over. Recently, it was only after a strong
national response that Indiana Gov. Mike
Pence was forced to backtrack on his
states law that would have allowed businesses to discriminate against the LGBT
community. Many of the Republicans
seeking their partys presidential nomination sided with Gov. Pence instead of
the LGBT community and the American
people.
These Republican candidates want to
take us backwards, undoing the progress
weve fought so hard to secure. Jeb Bush
has said that, the institution of marriage
is under attack in our society. Marco Rubio said one would need to have a ridiculous and absurd reading of the U.S. Con-
stitution to think same-sex couples have

the right to marry. Rand Paul, the candidate who supposedly wants to broaden
the GOPs appeal and outreach to young
voters, said that same-sex marriage offends him. Others, including Scott Walker, Chris Christie, Mike Huckabee, Rick
Santorum and Bobby Jindal, all oppose
marriage equality.
There are many places around the
world where people are still subjected
to violence and discrimination based
on who they are or who they love, particularly for the transgender community.
Even here at home, weve failed to enact
protections like the Employment NonDiscrimination Act. In just a few weeks,
the Supreme Court will issue a decision
on whether same-sex couples have the
right to marry nationwide.
This June, as we celebrate LGBT Pride
Month, the LGBT community and its allies
are proud to look back on the victories
weve achieved, and rededicate ourselves
to the ghts still ahead.

Irish vote should inspire U.S. Supreme Court

Justices can be on the side of
humanity or on the side of
the obsolete

If youd told me more than a year
ago that Ireland would vote to legalize
same-sex marriage by a wide margin in
a popular vote, I would have laughed at
the suggestion. But when I visited a few
weeks ago to help with the campaign,
the ght was ongoing in an atmosphere
of hope and expectation. Despite the appalling comments from the Vatican condemning the success of this vote, Ireland
seems to have embraced a Catholicism
that leaves room for real people, and real
love stories, to ourish. We would do well
to embrace our new allies, and celebrate
Irelands victory as an illustration of the
ever-broadening set of people who stand
for equality and love.
In early May, I was invited to Ireland
by the Lawyers for Yes Campaign as the
campaign for Marriage Equality intensied its eorts. I met Irelands rst openly
gay elected ocial, Sen. David Norris, as

well as other leaders of the Irish Legislature. Amazingly (to an American politician, anyway), all four major political parties were in favor of the upcoming ballot
measure for marriage equality. I was also
struck by how knowledgeable members
of the campaign for marriage were about
American politics, and how strategically
they applied lessons from the battle for
marriage equality in the U.S. to their own
country. They used sophisticated messaging to speak to everyday people about
the vote. One television ad featured the
mammy-in-chief speaking about how
every generation has an opportunity to
make a change and this was Irelands opportunity. While it featured the mother of
a gay man, it really spoke of equal opportunity for all people. It was eectively designed to speakmother-to-motherto
people both connected and unconnected
to members of the LGBTQ community.

career was not when my marriage equality bill was signed into law in New York.

trict and having constituents come up to
me, saying how happy and proud they
were that the law had nally come to New
York. Most of these constituents were
not LGBTQ, but straight allies. The ght
for greater LGBTQ equality is deeply personal, but it is also a broad ght to help
our country uphold some of the most basic principles it stands for. In the ght for
equality, opportunity, and freedom, we
need diverse allies, and we have them.
It should be lost on no one that this victory for same-sex marriage came in one
of the worlds most identiably Catholic
countries. Irish voters were in no way
turning their back on their Catholic faith,
but embracing the stand for human dignity and equality that the faith preaches.
The Irish people armed that being
Catholic, Irish and gay is not inherently a

conict, despite what so many have long
claimed.
The Irish have demonstrated yet again
that this ght is not being fought only by
the LGBTQ community. When we all recognize that we are in this ght for equality
together, we can win as easily and overwhelmingly as we did in Ireland. May the
U.S. Supreme Court hear the call from
across the pond as it makes its decision
on marriage equality in June. The court
can either be on the side of humanity, or
on the side of the obsolete.

Customs scrutiny, at tires
and spotty Internet service

The prospect of passing through customs

at Havanas Jos Mart International Airport on
May 19 with several interviews of LGBT rights
advocates in Cuba who openly criticized their
government saved to my phone was something that made me anxious ahead of my
scheduled departure. A picture of a poster declaring Mariela Castro, the daughter of Cuban
President Ral Castro who has publicly spearheaded LGBT rights on the Communist island,
a fraud that I had uploaded to my laptop several days earlier only exacerbated the anxiety.
I discreetly placed my phone with the potentially suspect interviews into my bag before
I walked up to the customs booths. I took a
couple of deep breaths before approaching a
young agent.
She quickly examined my passport before
stamping the paper press visa that had allowed me to work as an authorized journalist for an LGBT publication in her country. She
said buen viaje and within 10 minutes I was
sitting in a small restaurant on the other side

of the security checkpoint where I ordered a
cheese sandwich, a Cuban coee and one last
shot of ron blanco. I then transcribed an interview with a transgender woman who told me
her government wants to destroy us.
This anticlimactic moment was the end of
myweek in Cuba reporting on the countrys
LGBT rights movement.
I had never been to the Communist island,
so I had no idea what to expect once I arrived.
The seven days I spent on the island were
among the most exciting, complex and challenging of my career.
The Cuban people were exceptionally kind
and more than willing to share their stories
with me. A group of independent LGBT rights
advocates with whom I met in the city of Cienfuegos oered me homemade cake, an and
juice after I interviewed them for nearly an
hour. More than half a dozen gay Cubans and
a drag queen welcomed me onto their horsedrawn cart at 3 a.m. that brought them to a
bar on the outskirts of the provincial capital
of Las Tunas where I covered events commemorating the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia that the National
Center for Sexual Education, a group known
by the Spanish acronym CENESEX that Mariela
Castro directs, organized.
A young man and a local mechanic in the city
of Santa Clara quickly changed the tire on my
rental car that had goneat while I was at a gas
station. I would have been lost without them.
These and many other interactions with the
Cuban people took place against the myriad
challenges that made reporting from their

country exceedingly dicult.
Coupons from the government-run telecommunications company to access the islands underdeveloped Internet network in order to le
stories and pictures and upload videos cost up
to $8.50 an hour. Finding bottled water outside
of Havana was not always possible. And driving
through the provinces on Cubas highways was
a bone-jarring experience.
The stories of abuse and harassment that
independent LGBT rights advocates have suffered at the hands of their own government
are far more serious than the aforementioned
challenges that are trivial in comparison.
I shook my head in disbelief as Fidel Malvarais Pelegrino of Proyecto Shui Tuix told me
that authorities detained him last June for a
week without the ability to bathe and obtain
new clothes simply because he was in Havana
without permission. One of his colleagues said
a police ocer stopped him and his Cuban
American boyfriend who were sitting along
Havanas Malecn simply because he wanted
money and sex.
I am extremely conscious of not perpetuating the stereotype of the obnoxious and
entitled American while on assignment overseas, but I am not at all naive to the fact that
my status as a credentialed foreign journalist
with access to sought after hard currency afforded me a signicant amount of privilege in
Cuba. This advantage, however, did not make
me immune to some less than pleasant experiences with the countrys totalitarian government and its supporters.
CENESEX staers kept a close eye on me

while I was with them in Las Tunas to cover the
International Day Against Homophobia and
Transphobia events. One of them walked up
to me near the bathroom of a nightclub where
a party was taking place in order to make sure
that I was okay, before walking me back to
the table where I was sitting with her and her
colleagues.
A Cuban police ocer the next day stopped
me at a checkpoint outside of Havana. She and
her colleague scrutinized my passport, visa and
government-issued press credentials for nearly
15 minutes before allowing me to continue on
to the Cuban capital. Those moments that I was
standing behind my car on the side of the highway were scary for someone who had never
experienced a direct interaction with authorities who work on behalf of a government that
routinely violates the human rights of its people
and controls the media.
Almost all of the Cubans I met have experienced needless hardship under the decadeslong U.S. embargo against their country. The
Cuban government has also exploited this
situation in order to maintain its rm control
over the countrys roughly 11 million people.
It is my sincere hope that the outcome of
the process to normalize relations between
the U.S. and Cuba will improve the lives of the
Cuban people who have suered for far too
long. It is also my sincere hope that the Cuban
government will begin working to remedy its
human rights record and address many of
its other failures with the rapprochement between it and Washington.

Why we still need our gay bars

Younger generation deserves
access to safe spaces
JUSTIN PELIGRI is a student at George

Theres a disturbing false parallel Ive heard

among friends, seen on social media and even
read in local papers: We have marriage equality now; we dont need gay bars.
The idea behind this way of thinking is
simple to understand. The LGBT community
is well on its way to achieving mainstream status. Queer people are everywhere. So theres
no longer any point in exclusively queer social
realms, right?
Wrong.
To me, the fact that gay people have become
so ubiquitous provides all the more incentive

for owners of gay establishments to do everything in their power to keep their doors wide
open: Their presence in neighborhoods around
the country is the best way for our community
to hold dear our history and preserve uniquely
queer safe spaces for another generation.
Thats why it was disconcerting to hear earlier
this month that the Hippo, a gay bar in Baltimore,
announced plans to close its doors this fall, with
a CVS opening up in its place. (Three cheers for
gentrification!) And it was equally frustrating to
hear that Chesapeake Pride was unable to raise
enough funds to host its 10th festival this summer. As yesterdays LGBT activists focus on their
families and their marriages justifiable things to
fixate on, of course they shouldnt forget about
the younger generation that is clamoring for
public opportunities to come into their own.
Lets take a step back. By now, the 69 riots
outside New Yorks still-kicking Stonewall Inn
have made their way into the textbooks, albeit
in the form of a short paragraph, vivid picture
or a footnote.
Since then, gay establishments have earned
their place in history as lynchpin locations that
showcase the gay spirit. Theyre places where

drag queens are treated like royalty and condoms and HIV tests are doled out and administered without stigma or shame.
The good news is that gay clubs are no longer the only places where any of this occurs.
Gay clubs do, however, still have a unique purpose: Theyre a haven. Feel-good stories about
older gay couples tying the knot after decades
together justiably warm our hearts, but they
also numb us to more depressing and less
shared stories about homelessness, suicide
and stigmatizing that regularly comes with
being a young queer American. Those are the
people that still need gay bars.
Id be surprised if well-known gay establishments in D.C. like Cobalt, JR.s, and Town end up
following The Hippos lead: None of them seem
to struggle to fill their barstools and dance floors.
After all, I certainly hope they dont. Ive lived in
D.C. open about my sexual orientation for four
years. And for four years, Ive felt safe in those bars
even during my own times of desperation and fear.
Decades from now, Ill look back on my coming out and my coming of age in this city and Ill be
thankful for those places where I have shared
laughs and gossip with friends, doled out dollar bills

to drag performers and, on more than one occasion, shed drunken tears after a stressful week.
For me and for many others, they are the
only public spaces that have truly made me
feel at home part of an exciting community
with some history behind it. And in thinking
about the possibility of these establishments
closing, Im sad for those who are just coming
out, for boys who prefer a bit more glitter and
glamour than the average frat brother, and
for people who seek out gender-neutral bathrooms to relieve themselves in peace. Gay
bars protect those people.
Now, in a progressive city like D.C., hardly
any gay person enjoys nights out exclusively at
gay bars.Today, more than ever, rainbow ags
hang outside establishments that dont explicitly cater to a gay crowd. We might not rely on gay
bars anymore to obtain an HIV screening, plan
political protests or even meet a love interest.
But to truly be happy and healthy, a young
generation of LGBT people needs gay bars just
as much as previous generations did, even
though business owners might not realize it
by reading the headlines.

The day the world didnt end

Auspicious signs of
LGBT progress

When people say a Supreme Court ruling for marriage equality would be the end
of America, or the worst thing since slavery,
or the ultimate calamity, what do they really mean? That their spouses will leave them?
Their houses will collapse? Nuclear warheads
will be launched? Surely they are not talking
about global warming, toxic oil spills, or honeybees dying, since those things are already happening. Perhaps they are doing a reverse fake
that requires them to act like drama queens.
Ted Cruz calls mandatory gay marriage
the greatest threat weve ever seen, and
warns that liberal fascism imperils religious
freedom. Bobby Jindals desperate posturing
turns him into The Incredible Shrinking Governor. Mike Huckabee vows to ignore SCOTUS,
because the Supreme Court is not the Supreme Being. Rick Santorum pledges to ght
a pro-gay ruling because he missed biology
class and gets gay sex and bestiality confused.
Scott Walker, in a lucid moment, says his opinion doesnt matter. Several candidates forget
their meds and are overtaken by a compulsion to crash gay weddings.
Most of them seem to realize they are
standing on a rapidly eroding sandbar. Some
observers suggest a pro-gay decision this
month will let GOP candidates o the hook in
2016. That, I suspect, underestimates the persistence of dead-enders. After all, some southerners still cling to their lost cause 150 years
after the Civil Wars end. Our opponents bellow and bluster like hikers trying to scare o a
bear, but the big, dark stranger keeps closing
in, as if their Bible study tape were switched
with a porn fantasy.
What a dierence two generations make.
The 8th and 10th grade students I recently
met with to talk about LGBT organizing were
unfazed by apocalyptic prophecies. They
wanted tips on public policy advocacy after
visiting their representatives on Capitol Hill.
As each group trooped into the lounge at The

DC Center for the LGBT Community, I tried to
imagine my high school teachers in the 1970s
bringing a gay activist in to give a lecture.
The teens roll their eyes at the rights dire
predictions and threats of insurrection. They
take equality for granted with an ease that
eludes many politicians. Their altered expectations will drive change. As Alison Gill, senior
legislative counsel at the Human Rights Campaign, said at a coalition event last week, we
are winning.
The stream of vitriol from the far right will
eventually abate. That is my thought as I relax
in the park on a balmy afternoon. It is a day
for pleasant thoughts, with dogs and children
cavorting as if time stands still. Somewhere, I
know, the haters and fearmongers continue
working their mischief, even exporting it. Freedom to do good is also freedom to do evil.
But we all need a break. Daydreaming on
warm summer days, and books that stretched
my imagination, taught my younger self that
solitude could be liberating. Shutting out the
world for an afternoon makes room to nd
your own voice. Sometimes, I tell the visiting
students, you have to disengage from your
nastiest foes. They pay no rent for space in
your head.
All around us we see auspicious signs. The
movement to end the dangerous quackery
of conversion therapy is gaining momentum. Scott Lively faces trial in federal court
for crimes against humanity for instigating
persecution in Uganda. Pepe Julian Onziema,
the Ugandan activist and trans man who won
a GLAAD Media Award for his stint on John
Olivers Last Week Tonight, had his nations
ambassador in the audience when he spoke
at the National Endowment for Democracy in
Washington. Irish drag star Panti Bliss was onstage taking seles with Gerry Adams of Sinn
Fein and Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald on May 23 as the Yes votes for
marriage equality rolled in. A rainbow over
Dublin heralded the breakthrough.
At a Dupont Circle pub called McClellans
Retreat that Saturday night, friends and I
toasted the Irish, and Miss Bliss in particular,
with a concoction of Jamesons, Smith & Cross
Jamaican Rum, Port, Raspberry Homme, and
Tiki Bitters called a Musket & Saber.
Each to his own taste, of course. Perhaps
Justice Kennedy prefers his whiskey straight.

Church will celebrate its 20th year as a reconciling ministry. As the larger community joins
in celebrating this milestone, the church recognizes the process of opening its doors to
all has been, The journey of a growing corps
of deeply committed individuals working day
after day, year after year, to transform their
church community into an ever-better reection of Gods love, justice and grace. Begun by
early lesbian and gay members, the inclusion
movement at Foundry grew over time to include straight allies, friends and families. It is
now truly a whole-church enterprise.
In a brochure, Foundry says of its early LGBT
members, Foundry was oblivious to their spiri-
tual needs, no more a place of safety for them

than society in general. The same brochure
celebrates that On January 22, 1977, Foundrys
Senior Minister Edward W. Bauman, preached
what is now considered a prophetic sermon
entitled The Gay Life, in which he called for
greater sensitivity to the humanity and feelings
of gay and lesbian people. The sermon caused
a whirlwind of controversy at Foundry but
the climate of biblical grace and inclusion that
pervaded his ministry began to touch Washingtons gay and lesbian community.
A small group of people heard that sermon
and began the process of moving Foundry
into the light. They were going against the
grain of their Institutional Church and still are.
At its 1972 General Conference, the United
Methodist Church (UMC) formally added discriminatory language to its Book of Discipline
regarding LGBT persons. Over the years,
Foundry led the charge to change that but its
latest eort in 2012 again failed.
In 1979, Foundry members joined Armation: United Methodists for Lesbian and Gay
Concerns. By the mid-1980s, gay and lesbian
members of Foundry began to identify themselves openly within the congregation and
assume leadership positions. The rst gay
couple was included in Foundrys pictorial directory in 1984.
Church leaders say the devastation caused
by the AIDS crisis moved the issue of gay and

lesbian inclusion to the forefront. Members
had friends, family members, co-workers, or
were themselves living with and dying from
AIDS. Throughout the 1990s, the AIDS mission
group was one of the most active Foundry missions. Quilt panels were displayed at Foundry
and the Concerts for Life raised more than $1
million for AIDS-related organizations.
In 1990, Foundrys Council on Ministries
began discussing becoming a Reconciling
Congregation but there was still signicant
tension regarding joining the reconciling
movement. On April 23, 1991, Foundrys
administrative board created a task force
under the chairmanship of Dr. Arthur Flemming, a Foundry leader who had served as
president of the National Council of Churches. The nal report of the task force was
delivered in August 1995. On Oct. 3, 1995,
the vote, ve years in the making was 52 to
45 and Foundry joined other United Methodist congregations to work for change
in the church arming the call of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be in ministry with all
people of all races, sexual orientations, ages
and physical conditions. Philip Wogaman,
a nationally known progressive theologian,
became senior pastor and encouraged
Foundry members to become involved in
the denomination beyond the work of the
local church.
In 2002, Dean Snyder became senior pastor
of Foundry and took Foundrys commitment
to the broader community. As the marriage
equality ght heated up in the District he offered meeting space and became an integral part of that ght. He put his ministry on
the line by agreeing to marry gay couples at
Foundry. My friend Paul Hazen, an openly gay
active member of Foundry, kept me informed
of what the church was doing and I attended
some Sunday services with him. As a gay man
and a Jew I always felt welcome when Pastor
Snyder spoke. In 2012, Foundry publicly afrmed, Gods creation includes individuals
who choose to live in a gender that diers
from that which they were assigned at birth.
In 2013, the entire community stood with
Foundry in support of Frank Schaefer, who
was defrocked as a UMC minister for performing the marriage of his gay son. The day after
Schaefer was defrocked, Dean Snyder invited
him to preach and I was proud to be there the
following Sunday when Schaefer preached
and his family became Foundry members in
an emotional service.
Today, the community joins in celebrating
with Foundry whose members include LGBTQ individuals and couples, LGBTQ families
and children; all celebrated, all recognized as
part of Gods creation and Foundrys family.

Time to break straight, white male hold on late-night TV

heralds end of an era

Ive stopped rending my garments and

avoiding the light of day. Im even taking
nourishment again. Like the more than
14 million viewers who tuned in on May
20 for David Lettermans last show, Im
recovering from the end of an era. Yet,
even as Ill miss Dave, I know that change
is the lifeblood of TV on traditional television sets, You Tube, streaming or other
new media. As this period of transition
unfolds, I cant help but wonder: Why is
there only a small LGBT presence on latenight TV? (Kudos to Watch What Hap-
pens Lives Andy Cohen for being the rst

openly gay American late night TV host.)
Dont get me wrong. Im from a family
of night owls, and as long as I can remember, Ive been an acionado of many of
the straight, (nearly all) white male luminaries of TVs late evening hours. Dick Cavetts interview with Katharine Hepburn
and Bette Davis were highlights of my
youth. Along with everyone in the world,
I watched Johnny Carsons last show in
1992. In that same year, it was fun to
see then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton play the sax on Arsenio Halls show.
Today, I enjoy watching the Tonight
Shows talented Jimmy Fallon, and cant
wait for my satiric news x from The
Daily Shows Jon Stewart or Last Week
Tonights John Oliver.
Even so, with more out celebs than you
can count and the Supreme Court ruling
on same-sex marriage coming later this
month, youd think some LGBT personalities or comedians would be tapped to
host late-night TV. To begin with, latenight shows promote and feed on pop
culture. Its unlikely there would be an
entertainment industry without the LGBT

community. And, with the rapid progress
of marriage equality and increasing number of queer families, the humor of late
night has become more gay centered and
often more queer friendly. Last year, Letterman joked that his retirement would
mean that Paul [Shaer] and I can be
married.
Yet, sometimes the late-night TV chat
about LGBT people has been, at best,
awkward, and at worst, homophobic
even when coming from liberal TV hosts.
I think there is a gay maa, Bill Maher,
host of Real Time with Bill Maher, said
in April. I think if you cross them, you do
get whacked.
I dont want (even if it were possible)
for LGBT jokes to be banned or for the
late-night landscape to turn completely
queer. What fun would it be to never
laugh at ourselves or if all the late night
hosts were just like us? But isnt it time for
some LGBT hosts, without constantly getting on a gay soapbox, to tell the jokes,
do the comedy bits, satirize the news and
interview guests on late-night TV?
The opportunity to be out here ... with

my face out here, especially an AfricanAmerican woman and a lesbian, too,
comedian Wanda Sykes told TV Guide,
on the premiere of her fab talk show that
aired on Fox from 2009 to 2010. It would
be terric if Sykes were given the chance
to send up the news with her incisive wit
and in bitingly funny sketches again in
late night.
People are open when they laugh and
more susceptible to dierent ideas, humorist, LGBT advocate and Blade contributor Kate Clinton told Forbes. Wouldnt it
be great to have Clinton make us laugh in
the midnight hour?
What would be more entertaining than
watching Emmy and Tony-winning Neil
Patrick Harris as a late-night host? More
intellectually insightful and playful than
tuning into a talkfest led by political commentator Rachel Maddow? Wouldnt it
be exciting if Orange is the New Black
star Laverne Cox were at the helm in late
night?
Heres hoping that the straight white
male late night code will be broken soon.

Commissioners to blame for Rehoboths problems

Noise ordinance unfairly
targets visitors to beach town

Memorial Day in Rehoboth Beach

started o better than usual. Weather
was predicted to be in the 80s nearly every day, Poodle Beach was packed with
boys and daddies in Speedos, Aqua was
packed for happy hour, the Blue Moon
had a line a block long and there was a
long list of house parties to attend.
Then things started to feel dierently.
The Rehoboth police started showing
up to shut parties down before they even
got started. Someone relieving himself on
a sand dune was given a citation. Police
ocers began searching bags on Poodle
Beach for booze. An arrest was made for
pot possession.
What ensued on Facebook was a fast
divergence from the usual beach party

pics. Those of us that were in Rehoboth
had a hard time getting our heads around
what was happening and those not in
Rehoboth made lots of incorrect, judgmental assumptions. Given the series of
events that occurred, the Blade itself reported that the City of Rehoboth Beach
might have targeted the gays.
Posts and comments blasted those of
us in Rehoboth, complaining about our
experience as whiny, privileged gays.
A fund set up to pay legal expenses for
the guy arrested was the subject of far
too many hateful comments by people
with no knowledge of the situation. The
person who was cited for urinating in the
dunes was held out as the stupidest person alive.
For those who have been to Rehoboth
for many years, the truth is that the weekend was quite tame. The behavior that
happened was nothing out of the norm.
The young gays werent out of control
and the old guys werent chiding anyone. The lack of an accessible bathroom
to Poodle Beach was raised yet again.
What was out of the norm was the
new noise ordinance that was enacted
over the winter. The new standard for a
noise complaint became a very subjective
clearly audible instead of a previous,

scientic-based, decibel standard. This
resulted in a handful of cranky residents
driving around neighborhoods seeking
out any noise they could nd or any gathering of people they could see and calling
in a noise complaint.
In its eagerness to protect the quality
of life in Rehoboth, the Town Commission has empowered a very small, vocal
minority to turn the resort town into the
Wild West, allowing them to use the local police to harass visitors without limit.
Every house organizer I spoke with did
reach out to all neighbors before hosting a BBQ or party, providing them with a
number to call if things got too loud. As it
turns out, it wasnt actually neighbors calling in the complaints.
With the large numbers of D.C. gays,
conversations on the beach and Facebook Messenger ensued. What initially
appeared to be a targeting of LGBT visitors turned out to be a result of the illconceived noise ordinance that may have
been more of a burden on LGBT visitors
on this particular weekend. When we
learned of a pending Town Commission
meeting at the end of the week, a handful
of us planned to attend and encouraged
others to join us.
At the meeting, we had hoped that reason would prevail. That was not to be. Instead of a discussion of how the noise ordinance was an undue burden on visitors
that created division and unduly empowered some unreasonable residents, the
discussion went in the opposite direction.
The mayor proposed to allow only owneroccupied homes to use existing pools.
Any tenants in homes with pools would
be prevented from using pools.
We are told that 20 percent of the
homes in Rehoboth are full-time residents. We know that their tourist season
is four months long. Yet, this Town Commission is convinced that the visitors that
provide the bulk of their two single largest
revenue streams are slowing destroying
their community. Its the same line weve
all heard since the rst time we visited Rehoboth, regardless of when that was.
Ive been in politics for nearly 30 years
and have never encountered a situation that wasnt subject to a solid mix of
reason, political pressure and evidencebased logic. The Rehoboth Beach Town
Commission will have nothing to do with
any of it. If you want to look at what went
wrong over Memorial Day, look no further than those seven people.

Show me the money: Crowds

expect big names but most
events are non-prots

When asked why she made Pittsburgh
the site of her rst Pride appearance in
2012 as opposed to a trendier city, out
rocker Melissa Etheridge was matter of fact:
Pittsburgh showed me the money, she told
the crowd to a huge round of applause.
In retrospect, though, it wasnt the
stretch it might have seemed at rst
glance. Despite her industry cred as
a Grammy-winning soul rocker with
enough pop sensibility to have secured
an impressive run of radio hits in the 90s,
Etheridge has always projected a rootsy,
blue-collar vibe much the same way Bruce
Springsteen and John Mellencamp have
straddled the heartland/A-lister fence for
decades on end. And yet, for Pittsburgh
Pride, it was a huge moment.

She really was up there just preaching
and having fun, says Gary Van Horn,
president of the board of the Delta
Foundation of Pittsburgh, the agency that
produces Pittsburgh Pride. She used the
pulpit and she was speaking to her people.
Van Horn says Etheridge was contracted to
do a 75-minute set but ended up playing for
about two-and-a-half hours. And although
details of her contract are protected, as
is the industry norm, by a condentiality
clause, Van Horn says he didnt nd her fee
outrageous considering she travels with
11 people counting band members and
manager, whose travel and hotel expenses
have to be paid. After deciding in 2006 to
move Pittsburgh Pride downtown and have
a big-name headliner give a full concertlength set for which patrons would have to
purchase tickets, Van Horn says he and his
team couldnt have been more pleased with
Etheridges set.
At the end of the day, I would be very,
very shocked if she cleared more than
thousands of dollars just knowing she
had to pay everybody, he says. There

is a thought process out there that they
should be doing this for free since its a
non-prot Pride event, but this is their
job. This is how they pay their bills, they
go and perform. Obviously its important
to do charity work sometimes, but there
are over 120 Pride events in the U.S.
that I know of and were only talking
about a handful of artists that are even
remotely available to that group and
the same handful of folks at every Pride
organization wants them, so to just expect
them to do it for free is just not feasible.
We showed her the money because she
needed to have that.
The behind-the-scenes business of
bringing celebrity entertainers in to
perform at Pride events historically
seen as a stage for either up-and-comers
or past-their-prime acts that havent
had hits in years but to whom gay men
have been traditionally loyal is a dicey
discussion. Obviously everybody wants
to dream big and hope for a legend,
but there are many factors involved:
tour schedules, riders, appearance fees,

whether the show is free or requires a
ticket and more. Because the Capital Pride
Festival is a free event, few would expect
somebody of Beyonces caliber would
be willing to give a free two-hour show.
That hasnt, however, stopped organizers
many of whom, like Van Horn, are
volunteers from exploring how many
branches up the higher-hanging fruit sits.
Of course I would always aim high
and then get shot back down, says Steve
Henderson, a Capital Pride volunteer
who worked for 17 years (his last year
was 2013) on the entertainment planning
committee. Unless they were going for a
pro bono show, we would never be able
to get a Gaga, Britney or Madonna-like
act. Not while its a free festival. Gaga is a
minimum $1 million plus more riders than
Pride could ever handle. She also required
a 10-truck load in and performance
rehearsals weeks in advance, which we
cannot do since the stage is installed the

How long have you been out and who

was the hardest person to tell?
I knew something was up as a teenager
but didnt act on it until I was 19, with
my college roommate, who remains
a close friend. Not unexpectedly,my
mother was hardest to tell. I knew
she wanted an all-American son,
whatever that was, and I didnt t the
bill. Her disappointment was evident.
My father and two sisters were more
understanding and welcomed Michael
into the fold.

To authors, its advised, write what you know. Local artist Gordon Binder
has applied that adage to his paintings and drawings, many of which are
hyper local. One of his recurring subjects is gay men standing in groups at
local spots such as JR.s.
Binder also creates gurative art and has painted and drawn many densely
packed cityscapes and streetscapes depicting New York, Chicago and other
urban locales.
In 1993, Binder took painting and other courses at the open program of
the Corcoran College of Art and Design working with local artist William
Christenberry. In 1996, he won a Corcoran scholarship for his talent and
artistic excellence. He won a Washington Blade Best of Gay D.C. award in 2003.
Several of his drawings and oil paintings will be on display next week
from Wednesday through June 14 at Gallery Plan B (1530 14th St., N.W.). The
opening reception is Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Details at galleryplanb.com.
Binder is a 66-year-old New Rochelle, N.Y. native who came to Washington
in 1972. He works by day as a senior fellow at the World Wildlife Fund and
Duke Universitys Nicolas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions. He
and Michael Rawson were married in 2010 after 38 years together. They have
been Dupont Circle residents since 1973.

nightspot, past or present?
I favor JR.s these days, though, mostly
its afternoons. I do fondly recall in the
day making neighborhood rounds from
Rascals to Mr. Ps to Frat House, ending
up on the dance oor at Badlands.
Describe your dream wedding.

After 38 years together, when marriage
became possible, we got hitched on the
rst Friday we both could get o and
gather family and friends. Even though
we could only accommodate 15 guests
Michaels mother, our last surviving parent
among them we elected to be married
by a D.C. government ocial as a political
statement. We had a lovely party for
everyone afterwards hosted by friends.
What non-LGBT issue are

you most passionate about?
Conservation of the natural resources air,
water, land, forests, soils, wildlife, minerals
we depend on, our economy included.
What historical outcome

would you change?
Mindful that pulling one string from
the timeline could alter history in
unexpected ways, Id stop the Nazis from
coming to power in Germany. Just might
have prevented their atrocities.
Whats been the most memorable pop

culture moment of your lifetime?
Last fall, I emceed at the wedding
of two of our closest friends, who
married on their 50th anniversary.They
orchestrated a fun production of songs
and skits featuring talented local actors
and singers that celebrated their half
century together. When the minister,
who held a D.C. license said, By the
power vested in me by Congress, it
was exhilarating. The room erupted in
applause.
On what do you insist?

Honesty, respect, civility.
What was your last

Alas, not yet into the world of social

what would the title be?

beyond the physical world?
The mystery, the magic, the wonder
of life in all its many forms. A spiritual
thread runs through there somewhere.
Whats your advice for

LGBT movement leaders?
Persevere. We have come a long way with
many triumphs and many setbacks. The
job wont be done, ironically, until equality
is no longer an issue, rather a given. The
next few generations should put us over.
What would you walk across

hot coals for?
Michael, my husband, and other family
and friends.
What LGBT stereotype annoys you

most?
That were only motivated by sex. Not
that theres anything wrong with it.
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?

I still think of Boys in the Band, the
rst lm I ever saw that included gay
men having a good time even though
there was lots of dysfunction in their
relationships.
Whats the most

overrated social custom?
Posting ones entire life on social media.
What trophy or prize

do you most covet?
A prominent place on the wall in a major
museum for my art.
What do you wish youd known at 18?

It gets better.
Why Washington?
Michael and I have made our home here
and Ive enjoyed a rewarding career in
the environmental eld.We have close
friends, we live in a lively neighborhood
characterized as Bohemian Mix in a city
reasonably easy to navigate with a rich
cultural scene and then some.

With its deliciously taut production of

The Letters, MetroStage brings a little
Hitchcockian suspense to Old Town.
Set in Soviet Russia circa 1931, the two
character play by John W. Lowell pits boss
against underling in a tense game of cat
and mouse. The trouble begins when
Anna, a 40-ish editor employed at an
unnamed government agency, is charged
with redacting words from a great
composers love letters to his boyfriends.
The state doesnt want it known that
one of Russias national treasures was gay.
Its soon discovered that someone from
Annas department has been copying the
scandalous letters in question, and the higher
ups want to locate and destroy the missing
copies and punish the parties involved.
When Anna (Susan Lynskey) is
summoned to the big boss oce,
experience tells her that such an invitation
can only end badly. During the prolonged
meeting, her boss known simply as the
Director (Michael Russotto) informs
Anna that shes being promoted to top
editor. Anna is reluctant to accept her
new position. And of course shes right to
be wary theres a catch. The Director
wants information and hes willing to do
anything to get it.
What follows is a slow-building battle
between the Director, a former cavalry
ocer whose jovial veneer covers a
scary bully with an enormous chip on
his shoulder, and a seemingly colorless
functionary. But dont let the mousy
demeanor fool you. Beneath Annas
gray cardigan beats a complex heart
sensitive, cynical and more than a
little conicted. And despite the power
imbalance, she proves a formidable
adversary. Still, widowed Ann must tread
carefully. Her job is her only security and
in her world, the gulag (or worse) looms
as a possible outcome.
The Letters premiered in Los Angeles

in 2009. Lowell drew inspiration from the
real events surrounding letters penned by
Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
(The Nutcracker, Swan Lake) whose
sexually frank correspondences were
destroyed by Russian ocials. Most
biographers contend that Tchaikovsky
and his brother were both gay and that
the composer counted his longtime valet
and an adult nephew among his love
interests. In Lowells play, the composer
goes unnamed. And there is no detail
regarding the passages that Anna and
her colleagues are called upon to erase
other than to say theyre unabashed
expressions of the subjects sexuality and
are pornographic by the days standards.
MetroStages producing artistic director
Carolyn Grin has a knack for nding
interesting plays that audiences arent
likely to see elsewhere around town. The
Letters is a ne example and under the
perceptive staging of out director John
Vreeke, the brisk, 75-minute work is short
but satisfying. Vreeke helps to elicit terric
performances from his Russotto and
Lynskey. The talented pair has worked
together before. Their history includes
MetroStages U.S. premiere production of
The Girl in the Goldsh Bowl.
Placed at an angle with a huge open
window suspended overhead, Giorgos
Tsappas set suggests a generic boss
oce with the big desk and a pair of
vinyl covered chairs government-issue
furniture betting the department head.
Its sinister in its banality.
The Letters is drawn from a specic
time and place, but could certainly take
place anywhere today. Its a timely piece,
particularly when matters of overzealous
and illegal surveillance and loss of
personal freedoms are being debated
here and now.

The Capital Tennis Association takes
center court this week in the ongoing
Washington Blade series about rookies and
veterans who make up the LGBT sports
teams in the Washington metro area.
Capital Tennis is in the beginning weeks
of its summer league and this fall players
will host the annual Capital Classic XXIII, a
stop on the Gay & Lesbian Tennis Alliance
world tour.
Two of their female players who are
both gay have served as social chair of
the organization over the past few years
and have had great success in boosting
the numbers of members at their social
tennis activities.
We are continuing our eorts to recruit
new members from underrepresented
groups such as women, young players
and minorities, says Je Sturman,
Capital Tennis president. In addition,
we are promoting competitive and safe
tennis for LGBT players and people of all
backgrounds.
Sue Rego grew up in Massachusetts
and played a few sports such as track &
eld but spent much of her time on the
sidelines watching her siblings taking
tennis and sailing lessons. Rego was in a
back brace to correct her scoliosis.
Rego stayed in the D.C. area after
graduating from American University and
now works as the chief operating ocer
of Deep Learning Analytics. Last year
a friend referred her to Capital Tennis
and she began playing doubles in the
beginners league.
I gured it would be best to start where
I didnt have full responsibility for the
court, Rego says. Playing against more
experienced players can be intimidating,
but I just had a blast.
Rego went on to play singles and
doubles in her rst tournament at the
Capital Classic last fall.

For the mixed doubles they paired me
with a guy from Pittsburgh who was a
much better player than I am, Rego says.
It was so nice that he had my back.
Rego, who took over the social chair
position on the board from fellow female
player Aspen Lagman, says the veteran
players have been helpful in providing
tips on getting better.
When I rst joined, Aspen took me to all
the social events and the veterans were all
so welcoming, Rego says. There is such a
community spirit among the players.
Aspen Lagman makes her living in
the sports community as part of the
marketing team at 106.7 the Fan sports
radio and as a spinning instructor.
Growing up in Alexandria, she was
an athletic kid and focused on softball,
track & eld, tennis and cheerleading.
While attending George Mason University
and playing intramural softball, she
broke a nger sliding into third base and
subsequently turned her attention to tennis.
She attended the Team D.C. SportsFest
in 2011, discovered Capital Tennis and
signed up for a league.
I have always had good hand-eye
coordination but found the drill clinics
oered by Capital Tennis to be very
helpful, Lagman says. I played in my
rst Capital Classic that fall and felt very
welcome as a female athlete.
Lagman recruited Rego as a rookie
player and then passed o her position as
social chair on the board to her. Lagman
enjoyed sharing with Rego the ins and
outs of the tennis community.
The bottom line is that I love watching
tennis and I love playing it. Lagman says.
Tennis is a great cardio workout and just
works as a good exercise for me.
Lagman is hoping to step out of the
safety of playing in her local community
soon.
I really want to play in the Atlantic Cup
but it scares me a little because it is not in
my hometown, Lagman says. I need to
get outside my comfort zone.

What do people in relationships owe
each other?
Im deeply in love with my wife, Laura.
Shes big-hearted, gorgeous and full of
life. Laura is from South America, and has
a style that is a lot more vibrant than is
typical for Washington. I love it, but I work
at a somewhat conservative rm and
occasionally have an event to which its
appropriate to bring my signicant other.
And I am uncomfortable bringing Laura
when she dresses up in a way that is, in
my opinion, too showy.
Ive told her this nicely but she gets
oended and tells me that she knows
how to dress and how to be appropriate.
She also says she doesnt want to dress
like someones grandmother.
Im comfortable being out but I am the
only lesbian at my level at work and am
always conscious of wanting to make
a good impression and seem normal.
I am trying to gure out if part of my
discomfort with the way Laura dresses
at these events is that I dont want to
stand out even more than I already do.
But I honestly think that she doesnt
dress appropriately for my formal work
events and I dont want to be known in
my company for having the spouse who
makes this sort of impression.
If my career may suer, shouldnt
Laura give in for my rms formal events?
Im happy to let her dress however she
wants at all other times.
MICHAEL REPLIES:
Strip away the details. You want Laura
to do something, and she doesnt want
to do it. This is such a common couples
dynamic that it has a name: The two of
you are locked in a power-control struggle.
You are making a power move by trying
to inuence Laura and she is making a
control move by blocking your inuence.
Theres absolutely nothing wrong with

them all the time. You can certainly
advocate for what you want, just as you can
certainly say no to someones request.
Power and control moves turn
toxic when you start thinking of your
relationship as a battleeld where there
has to be a winner and a loser. When
youre unwilling to be thoughtful about
each others wishes, your relationship
becomes like a tire spinning in the snow,
going nowhere and burning rubber.
Think of power-control struggles as the
equivalent of a temper tantrum. Rather
than accepting our partners dierences
and guring out how to construct a life
together, we shut down and hold fast
to our own point of view, stamping our
feet in disappointment because our
partner doesnt want to do it our way. Im
guessing that this is not the only place
in your relationship where you two are
having this struggle.
Maybe youre creating this particular
issue in your head because you want to be
a awless lesbian at the oce and no one
else actually cares what Laura wears. Maybe
Laura is refusing your request because
she feels like youre running the show and
wants some say in her own life. It doesnt
really matter. Instead of putting energy into

Many stars reduce fees for Pride appearances

evening of the festival. That has been the

problem with the A grade headliners.
Henderson says he worked for years
on a shoestring budget of about $15,00020,000 at most for the day, a gure that had
to include traveling expenses, lodging and
everything. As one might imagine, most
of the entertainers who play throughout
the day on the Capital Pride main stage
the Gay Mens Chorus, the drag cast at
Ziegfelds, emcees such as Destiny Childs,
etc. donate their time. Corporate
sponsorships and partnerships have
given current organizers bigger budgets,
he says. Ryan Bos, Capital Pride executive
director, says hes not allowed to disclose
the current budget for headliners.
Despite the challenges, Henderson,
who now lives in Chicago, has many good
memories and says hes proud of the
many acts they brought in over the years
RuPaul in 2009, Chely Wright in 2010,
Deborah Cox in 2012, Cher Lloyd, Emeli
Sande and Icona Pop in 2013 and more.
He says only two acts ever cancelled
Mya gave about three weeks notice citing
a skiing accident in 2010. Chely Wright
had just come out and was happy to ll
in. The biggest nail biter, Henderson says,
was Kelly Rowlands 2011 cancellation
about a week before the event. His years
of working as a DJ with various record
labels was always a help, but especially
then, he says. Broadway belter Jennifer
Holliday, whod just sung with the Gay
Mens Chorus of Washington the week
before, saved the day.
I didnt really have time to freak out, I
just had to gure out who we were gonna
get, Henderson says. Thankfully I knew
Jennifer from past work and I literally
called her within a minute of it happening.
She was somebody we had discussed
about being a headliner or a co-headliner
but we didnt have the budget to do both.
We had landed Kelly, which was pretty
huge since her song was so big at the
time, we really felt we had a winner.
Henderson says her camp gave no
reason for the abrupt cancellation.
It was just a real quick e-mail. Sorry,
not-gonna-be-able-to-make-it-type thing.
No reason.
Bos says three years ago the team that
now plans main stage entertainment
opted for a dierent approach and now
bring in three co-headliners who each
perform 25-35-minute sets to give the
event more of a festival concert-type feel.
We did it to diversify, to set ourselves
apart a little and to not throw all the eggs
in one basket, he says.
This years concert, co-presented with
radio station Hot 99.5, will feature En
Vogue, Wilson Phillips, Amber and Carly
Rae Jepsen. He says 90s acts like the
ICONA POP on the Capital Pride main stage in 2013.
former two were purposefully chosen to

dovetail with this years Flashback theme
as its the 40th anniversary of Capital
Pride. Last years lineup was Karmin,
Bonnie McKee, DJ Cassidy and Betty Who.
And while there will always be a spot
for yesterdays hit makers at various Pride
events one recalls Inaya Day (Nasty
Girl) who played Capital Pride in 2010 or
Taylor Dayne (Tell it to My Heart) whos
found new life headlining Prides all over
the Eastern Seaboard Bos says the
notion that Pride is a place for washed-up
divas of yesteryear is an anachronism.
I think thats an old perception, he
says. For artists who are trying to launch
an album, Pride provides an opportunity
to get in front of a huge community. For
those who have been around a while,
they know the support from the gay
community so they see it as a way to
give back, but that perception has been
shifting for a while now and you see it at
other Prides as well.
Michael Musto, gay author and former
Village Voice columnist, agrees.
It used to be unfairly thought of as
a dubious career move to do Priderelated events, but as LGBT became more
accepted, so did Pride, he told the Blade.
Once big names started performing at
the Pier dance after the parade here in
New York City (for big money of course),
there was no stigma at all. They can also
work the parade itself or do any number of
things around the country for Pride and its
considered a good move for all involved.
Van Horn says the caliber of talent at
Pittsburgh Pride started an uptick after
they brought in Tiany in 2006 and
Kimberley Locke in 2007. In recent years,
besides Etheridge, theyve brought in top
acts like Adam Lambert and Patti LaBelle.

He says overall the community

understands and established acts like
Etheridge and LaBelle bring in their own
fan bases, people who ordinarily wouldnt
attend Pride.
Of course, yeah, everybody wants Cher
or Cyndi Lauper or J. Lo or Beyonce but
they have to be realistic, Van Horn says.
Theyre in high demand and they get
paid a lot. We have a list that continually
gets updated via committee and we get
suggestions from the community and then
we start putting feelers out there with
agents and management companies.
He also says there are a bounty
of expenses involved in bringing in
household names that the general public
would never think of such as the logistics
of building a downtown stage for a oneo, lights, power, security, portable
toilets, fencing, clean-up services all
in addition to the event itself. The Delta
Foundation has one paid sta member
and a host of volunteers.
Youre a victim of your own success in
a way, he says. You continue to attract
more and more people and yet its also up
to you to make sure theyre all safe and
provided for as well. Our Sunday event
attracts about 90,000 people so you have
to make sure theyre all safe, have food
to eat and drink throughout the day, the
tents, tables and chairs you have to
provide all that.
So whats it like from the other side?
Are there any unwritten industry rules for
playing Pride events among artists and
managers?
Howard Bragman, a gay PR veteran of
Fifteen Minutes whos worked with many
LGBT acts, says not really. Several acts
in his stable will be at various Prides this
year including Chaz Bono who will appear
at Toronto Pride with Lauper and Pussy
Riot, and Ty Herndon whos slated for

Chicago Pride.
I think it depends on the person and
the moment, Bragman says. Somebody
ends up in the news and comes out and
suddenly all the Prides come after you.
Its a great honor. Even when they have to
say no, its a great honor because youre
representing a community. Nobody is
oended. Its a totally attering moment.
He says in New York and Los Angeles,
where celebrities often live, its not
uncommon for them to donate their
time but if travel is involved, most Pride
organizers know theyll have to pay.
It just depends, he says. But inevitably,
yeah, its a family rate, its not their topdollar corporate rate and for these
people who have speaking engagements,
generally its not just come in and ride
in the parade for two hours. You come
in the Friday before, theres a reception,
there are many interviews, sometimes on
Saturday you cut the ribbon at the festival
and then theres the parade on Sunday.
Its a lot of work, but the best ones are
the ones that are well organized and have
been doing it a long time. Those are the
ones theyre the happiest to do.
Van Horn says its practically impossible
to gauge how close Pride fees jell with rates
the same artist would require for a regular
appearance. Pride sets are typically much
shorter than a normal show.
There isnt much data available on how
much people pay for an artist because
its all condential, he says. Like at New
York City Pride when Cher came out and
sang four songs (in 2013), I know what
Cher gets paid and I know New York City
Pride wasnt paying her typical fee.
Out singer-songwriter Eric Himan has
played many Pride events since his rst in
South Florida in 2002. Now based in Tulsa,
Okla., happily married and promoting his
new album Playing Cards, he says Pride
events have changed radically over the
last decade or so.
The thing about Pride is that Pride means
something dierent to everybody and so
every organizer has a dierent approach,
he says. For some, its a rally. For others,
its a day to get away from politics and just
enjoy being out. The trajectory of how much
Pride has changed from being something
in the park that only gay people go to, to
moving downtown and incorporating a lot
of businesses and corporate sponsorships
so its not just the gay bars sponsoring
it, Ive denitely noticed that change. So
when you go in, you have to nd out from
the organizer what their idea of Pride is. I
always viewed it as an opportunity to go
be in my community and voice my ideas
and concerns about how gay people t
into the world, however you might go and

everybody just wants a big dance party so

you have to think about how youre going to
t into that as the acoustic, live musician.
He says there have been times the midtier musicians get shafted when various
Pride committees spend the bulk of their
budget to bring in a name act.
Sometimes Im glad to donate things,
like CDs for a rae or something like
that, he says. My only concern is when
I nd out, Oh hey, we just spent 80 grand
on yada yada but will you play for free?,
thats kind of when Im like, That doesnt
seem correct. When you go spend all
your money on one person you wanted
to bring, thats when I get nervous about
being a part of it.
Playing for the exposure is a common
bone some organizers toss, he says.
Sometimes thats OK but exposure is
something you cant really promise. What
if it gets rained out that day? Well, there
goes your exposure. Or what if the main
act is at 12 that night, but they stick you
on a stage next to it at 11 a.m.? Early on
when youre starting out as a musician,
you dont play for much money so the
exposure works, but Ive always found the
times Ive really gotten the best exposure
have always been at paid gigs. I cant recall
one gig where they promised exposure
and it was like, Oh god, it worked out.
Henderson gets that but says over his
17-year tenure at Capital Pride, he guesses
70-80 percent of the acts, especially the
community groups, donated their time.
I had long-running relationships with a
lot of these labels, so I was able to negotiate
a lot of pro bono stu, he says. Icona Pop
was pro bono. So was Consuelo Costin
and obviously all the local people like the
Gay Mens Chorus, the D.C. Cowboys and
all the local favorites. They all came in to
donate their time and production and give
up half of their afternoon on a steaming
hot Sunday.
He also says the role of the Pride
entertainment committee volunteer chair

is a thankless job. He got involved as a way
to give back but says it can easily ramp up
into a second full-time job in the months
leading up to Pride. He also says working
by committee has a downside as well.
We lost out on some really big ones over
the years waiting for the board to make a
decision, Henderson says. I wasnt the
one making the nal decision and a couple
times they waited too long and we lost out.
Foster the People, Imagine Dragons and
Diana Ross to name a few.
Van Horn says all the artists hes
worked with have been easy and he has
no horror stories.
They always have safety and security
concerns but thats understandable, he
says. There are crazies in the world. But
no, there have never been any requests
for M&Ms but take out all the blue ones
or anything like that.
Henderson says the hardest part of the
job was always keeping things running
smoothly backstage where there are
only three cooled dressing room/trailers.

A primer, from
showerheads to
chimneys and more

Homeowners often ask, What are some
general guidelines for keeping my home
safe and healthy for my family? Our experience over the last 27 years has proven
that certain interior maintenance items
are critical to the long-term performance
of your home. A regular schedule of interior and exterior home maintenance will
likely help you to avoid serious home-related problems, or at least identify issues
early so problems can be addressed in a
timely manner with minimal adverse effects. These baseline preventative maintenance steps should help to ensure your
homes interior stays in top shape.
HVAC: As a mechanical system, they require regular maintenance to operate at
their most ecient level. You should have
your HVAC systems serviced twice a year,
spring and fall, to ensure they are operating
as intended. This should include changing
the lter (monthly with an EAC) and a system inspection, and for your AC, a refrigerant check and a cleaning of the condenser.
Maintenance Recommendation:Serviced
in the spring and fall; change lters regularly.
Humidiers: Many homes are equipped
with a humidier to help raise the humidity during the dry winter months. When
working properly these provide a great
benet to the health of your home and

indoor air quality. They do require annual
maintenance to replace the pad inside the
humidier. Over the winter months the
pad collects calcium and other deposits
from the water source, which may cause it
to clog. If your humidier does clog, it normally will start leaking. To keep this from
happening, be sure that your HVAC service
company replaces the pad every fall during their service visit.
Maintenance Recommendation: Replace
pad in the fall during heating system checkup.
Water Heaters: The process of heating
up water causes particles and minerals
to form and settle at the bottom of the
water heater. This may result in the less
ecient operation and decreased capacity of your unit. To ensure maximum performance and to minimize maintenance
hassles, you should drain 10-15 gallons
of water from the bottom of the water
heater once a year.
Maintenance Recommendation: Drain
10-15 gallons annually.
Fireplaces and Chimneys: It is recommended that replaces be inspected at
least once per year for soundness, deposits and clearance. Regardless of use,
chimneys should be inspected to ensure
nothing has nested and deposits have
not formed in the ue. Additionally, the
exterior of the chimney should be inspected for possible point up and to assess the condition of the masonry cap.
Cracks and/or voids can allow water into
the house causing water damage.
Maintenance Recommendation: Annual inspection, clean as necessary.

Bathtubs and Showers: Much like the
caulking on the exterior of your home, the
life of the interior caulking at bathtubs,
showers, sinks and backsplashes is greatly
impacted by the amount of use and/or exposure. Voids in the caulking are common
maintenance items that can lead to leaks
if not monitored and corrected. Twice a
year, all bathroom caulking should be inspected and touched up as necessary.
Maintenance Recommendation: Inspect and repair caulking twice a year.
Showerheads and Faucet Screens:
Even with a water cleaning system, it is
possible for deposits to build up in showerheads and faucet screens. It is recommended that you inspect showerheads
and clean them as necessary. Additionally, screens in faucets should be inspected a minimum of once per year to keep
them owing properly.
Maintenance Recommendation: Clean
once per year or as necessary for the
most used xtures.
Appliances: All appliances require
some level of maintenance to continue
ecient operation. A few examples are
vacuuming the refrigerator and icemaker
condenser coils and cleaning the screens
on your range hood. Please refer to the
manufacturers literature for specic
maintenance and cleaning instructions
for appliances throughout your home.
Maintenance Recommendation: Once a
year, or as recommended by manufacturer.
Be sure to have your chimney inspected

annually.
