Re: Information regarding the PIES III Program

Dear Pak M. Rozali,

Congratulations on being selected to participate in the Partnership in Islamic Scholarships (PIES) Program
for 2015. The program involves ten weeks of pre-departure English and intercultural training by IALF in
Jakarta, followed by two semesters of supervised research at the Australian National University (ANU) in
Canberra. You will leave for Canberra in early February for the first semester. Between semesters one and
two (around July), you will have the opportunity to return home to conduct further fieldwork and meet with
your Indonesian supervisors. The program will be completed by mid December.
The PIES program is run by the ANU and financed through a grant from the Australian Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). During your time at the ANU, you will be hosted by the Department for
Political and Social Change (PSC) in the School of International, Political and Strategic Studies (IPS),
College of Asia and the Pacific (CAP). The Department will provide you with shared office space, a
computer, and office supplies. You will work with an Indonesian speaking supervisor from within CAP.
Kemenag (the Indonesian Ministry for Religious Affairs, MORA) will assist in organising your travel to
Jakarta to begin pre-departure training on 13 October and will also arrange for you to receive an official
passport (paspor dinas) for your travel to Australia.
The Cultural Section of the Australian Embassy will organise your visas for Australia and we will book your
travel.
The ANU will meet the following costs (all dollar amounts are in Australian dollars):
Pre-departure expenses associated with your visas, medical checks, passports and fiscal taxes;
$1000 per person as a contribution to living expenses in Jakarta during your IALF training;
Your English language training at IALF and for IELTS testing if you wish to take the test;
Airfares from your home towns to Canberra, x 2;
On arrival in Canberra, $2000 per person for establishment costs;
Tuition fees for the ANU;
A stipend, equal to that of DFAT-funded students which will cover all your accommodation and daily
needs (this year PIES students receive $1,150 every two weeks);
An academic training program, run by the ANU Academic Skills and Learning Centre (ASLC) at
ANU;
Travel expenses to visit two other universities in Australia; and to present at a postgraduate
conference; and
