Assignment 2

Premature baby

Premature babies are babies born before the normal

postnatal survival. It may cause by the too young mother or too old
mother. The babys mother often experiences either small or large
contraction. When the mother experiences serious contraction that
it requires the baby must be born prematurely. After the premature
baby birth, the paramedics usually directly put the baby into the
incubator to enable the baby gets warmth and avoiding from
freezing due to the babys skin is very delicate and thin. Besides keeping the body of the baby remains
warm, the purpose of incubation is allowing the baby breathe accordingly to prevent asphyxiation
apnoea (airway obstruction) and avoiding abnormalities of other organs.
In addition, usually Indonesian paramedics rubbing pure
coconut oil to the babys body in order to keep the body warmth, to
moisture babys skin, and to avoid hurt may cause by friction of the
cloths and sensitive babys skin while the baby move. To support
the nutrition of the baby, the paramedic giving the milk through
NGT (Nasogastric Tube), and injecting some vitamins through
infusion cable to keep maintaining the body immunity remains
stable. Premature babies who get good treatment and care can grow in good conditions like other
normal baby born until they grow up. However for those who not get good handle and treatment can
cause abnormalities organ body. It could even cause death to the babies.
The possibility of premature baby to survive increasing with the age of the baby such as:

5% survive for twenty two weeks of baby, 26% survive for twenty three weeks of baby, 56% survive
for twenty four weeks of baby, and 76% survive for twenty five weeks of baby. 22-week-old baby is
about 29-32 cm and weighs about 350 g, similar to Barbie dolls. 23-week-old baby is about 38 cm and
weighs about 455 g. 24-week-old baby is about 37 cm and weighs about 540-630 g. 25-week-old baby
is about 38-40 cm and weighs about 700 g.
If the baby survives, the baby will have some kind of risk such as neuron abnormality
including cerebral palsy, down syndrome (poor response, short stature, heart defects, susceptibility to
respiratory infections, and degenerate), and sometimes meningitis (inflammation of the brain),
blindness due to abnormal blood vessel growth in the eye, deaf, dumb, suffering from acute asthma,
sensitive to foods or other chemicals that contain the artificial chemical substances or hazardous
substances (for example monosodium glutamate), cardiac problems, lung problems because of a lack
of protein which called by surfactant, the tiny air may collapse, respiratory problems, liver disorders,

digestive disorders due to the intestinal tissue can die without the beneficial mucus and bacteria. The
babys skin is more sensitive due to the fat of the skin is thinner and more transparent and it may also
be yellow from jaundice.
The latest technique to make them (the baby) survive is
that the scientists created protein which is called by surfactant for
the lung. Artificial surfactant and air transmission devices can help
keeping the air flows openly. The incubator helps babies were born
without protective layer of the fat that make them stay warm. The
intravenous
nutrition
was
tempted to pass to the gut until it
is getting stronger. Laser surgery can halt the vessel growth and
preserve the vision. Nitric oxide, it is an experimental therapy could
to improve lung function for these premature babies because it
would give a boost to the neurotransmitters.
