MY SUMMARY:
The story began with Sir Charles Baskervilles death which was a surprise and
a strange one. He died in the moor, in which lived a hound according to an
ancestral family story. This case about Sir Charles death was presented to Mr.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson by Dr. Mortimer. The real problem was that Sir
Henry Baskerville, the last one of Baskerville family, was going to travel from
America to London, then to Devonshire where the Baskerville Hall and the moor
was. Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson started the investigation and they
discovered that the hound existed but it was trained by Mr. Stapleton whose
real name was Mr. Rodger Baskerville son of Sir Rodger Baskerville brother of
Sir Charles. Mr. Stapleton had had a lot of different economic problems and also
troubles with the law that was the reason why he had moved to Devonshire.
Besides, he threatened a lot of people to achieve his goals which were to kill
the other last two Baskervilles. Baskervilles case was not an easy one, but the

detective was an intelligent man who planned a double investigation without

saying a word to his smart assistant, Dr. Watson. They discovered who was the
murderer and they protected Sir Henry who was full of life at the end of the
story. However, Mr. Stapleton did not have the same destiny as his relative,
because he finally died.

MEANING OF THE
WORLD
The part of a person that
makes it possible for

It is a big duty to do an

REASON FOR
CHOSING THE WORD
Through the entire story
we see that they always
make their minds up in
order to think clearly
while the investigation is
taking place.
This word shows us that
Dr. Watson did a good
job because he had a
specific mission that
motivates to do the right
thing.
In this place the main
event took place. It is
important to take it into
account in order to
analyze all the clues.
This was how Sherlock
Holmes calls Watson. So,
we can see the close
relationship between
them that unites them,
in a way, in a kind of
team.
It appears several times
in the story, especially in
the beginning, as a
hypothesis and as a
statement. Was it a
really mischief?

Quotes
"Really, Watson, you excel yourself," said Holmes, pushing back his chair
and lighting a cigarette. "I am bound to say that in all the accounts which
you have been so good as to give of my own small achievements you have
habitually underrated your own abilities. It may be that you are not yourself
luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing
genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it. I confess, my dear fellow,
that I am very much in your debt." (Page 6. P.2)
In this quote, we can see the relationship between Sherlock and Watson, where
Sherlock leads in Watson to the right answer and the other way around. We can
also perceive Sherlocks arrogant attitude.

Now is the dramatic moment of fate, Watson, when you hear a step upon
the stair which is walking into your life, and you know not whether for good
or ill. What does Dr. James Mortimer, the man of science, ask of Sherlock
Holmes, the specialist in crime? Come in!" (Page 8. Last Paragraph)
We can see the beginning of the case in this quote when Sherlock hears Dr.
James Mortimer approaching to the house.

He said that there were no traces upon the ground round the body. He did
not observe any. But I didsome little distance off, but fresh and clear."
"Footprints?"
"Footprints."
"A man's or a woman's?"
Dr. Mortimer looked strangely at us for an instant, and his voice sank almost
to a whisper as he answered.
"Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!" (Page 21. Last
Paragraph)
It is presumed to be a hound of a supernatural nature. The supernatural
creature is mentioned as the author of the death, and not just a mere dog.

I can still remember your complete indifference as to whether the sun

moved round the earth or the earth round the sun (Page 76. Last
Paragraph)
This was mentioned in the first book about Sherlocks adventures A study in
Scarlet: My surprise reached a climax, however, when I found incidentally
that he was ignorant of the Copernican Theory and of the composition of the
Solar System. That any civilized human being in this nineteenth century should
not be aware that the earth travelled round the sun appeared to be to me such
an extraordinary fact that I could hardly realize it. In both books we can see
the way Sherlocks mind works, for him is important not to have useless
information that might elbow out the useful ones.

All my unspoken instincts, my vague suspicions, suddenly took shape and

centred upon the naturalist. In that impassive colourless man, with his straw
hat and his butterfly-net, I seemed to see something terriblea creature of
infinite patience and craft, with a smiling face and a murderous heart. (Page
125. Last Paragraph)
The suspect is shown and the characteristic that his personality or behaviour
does not match with with his physical features are mentioned by Sherlock.

I said it in London, Watson, and I say it again now, that never yet have we
helped to hunt down a more dangerous man than he who is lying yonder"
he swept his long arm towards the huge mottled expanse of green-splotched
bog which stretched away until it merged into the russet slopes of the moor.
(Page 158. Last Paragraph)
The quote shows the closure of the case and the characteristics of this.

Background and Themes

Good and evil: Doyle shows good and evil in permanent opposition to
each other throughout the ages. Evil is shown to be stronger in the hours
of darkness. Dark is a word that is constantly used to describe
Baskerville Hall and Dartmoor. The feeling of menace created through
the descriptions of the hall and the moors contrasts sharply with the
warm coziness of Baker Street. Conan Doyle builds the tension in the

novel through mysterious happenings, unexplained noises, menacing

weather, and eccentric characters who clearly have something to hide.
()I am inclined to think that Stapletons career of crime has been by
no means limited to this single Baskerville affair. It is suggestive that
during the last three years there have been four considerable burglaries
in the West Country, for none of which was any criminal ever arrested.
The last of these, at Folkestone Court, in May, was remarkable for the
cold-blooded pistolling of the page, who surprised the masked and
solidarity burglar. I cannot doubt that Stapleton recruited his waning
resources in this fashion, and that for years he has been a desperate and
dangerous man. Page 164 Chapter 15

Natural and supernatural: The solutions to the Sherlock Holmes

mysteries are reached through reason and, perhaps because of Conan
Doyles interest in the supernatural, there is often an air of the
unexplained and macabre about them.

Of the origin of the Hound of the Baskervilles there have been many
statements, yet as I come in a direct line from Hugo Baskerville, and as I had
the story from my father, who also had it from his, I have set it down with all
belief that it occurred even as is here set forth. And I would have you believe,
my sons, that the same Justice which punishes sin may also most graciously
forgive it, and that no ban is so heavy but that by prayer and repentance it
may be removed. Page 12 Chapter 2
()for Hugo Baskerville passed me upon his black mare, and there ran mute
behind him such a hound of hell as God forbid should ever be at my heels.
