ItsinterestingthatTyndaletranslatesitasMessengerofthecongregationthisismore
accuratetotheoriginalmeaning.Infact,oneofthereasonsbehindtherabidhatredofthe
establishedhierarchicalchurchtowardsTyndalewashisaccuratetranslationoftheGreekword
ekklesiaascongregationandnotchurch.Theydidnotwanttheordinarylaityinthepewsto
thinkthattheywereofanyinteresttoGod!

ThesethingssaiththeAmen,thefaithfulandtruewitness,thebeginningofthe
creationofGod;
Jesusisthesourceofallcreation;HewastheOnewhocreated.HeisemphasizingthatHeis
faithfulandtruebecauseHeisabouttotellthemsomethingwhichtheydontbelieveandcant
discernforthemselves.HeknowstheyneedtoacceptHiswordforitthatitistrue.Hestelling
us,Iwontlietoyou!
Iknowthyworks,thatthouartneithercoldnorhot:Iwouldthouwertcoldorhot.So
thenbecausethouartlukewarm,andneithercoldnorhot,Iwillspuetheeoutofmy
mouth.
Christdeclares,"Thouartneithercoldnorhot....Sothenbecausethouart
lukewarmandneithercoldnorhot,Iwillspuetheeoutofmymouth."Whatdoesthis
mean?ThatHewillnolongerpresentthenameofsuchaonetoHisFather.UL213.
Itisinterestingandshockingtoseethatinthemessagetothepreviouschurch,Philadelphia,
whichinthetimeperiodoftheearlyAdventmovement,theMillerites,hadnorebukegivento
it.Jesushadnothingbadtosayaboutthem;andnowonlyafewyearslater,hereisLaodiceaof
whichHehasnothinggoodthatHecansayaboutit.Whataterriblecontrast!
Thislukewarmconditionisaverysadstateofaffairstobein;itsalrightphysically,but
spirituallyitishorrible.IfoneislukewarmtoGod,itmeansbeingindifferenttoHim.Theworse
insultyoucangiveanyoneistoignorehimandpretendthathejustisntimportanttoyouatall.
Evenbeingangrywithsomeoneisnotasgreataninsultasindifference;showingthatitsnot
importanttoyouthattheyevenexist;theyaremeaninglesstoyou.TheseLaodiceansdontcare
aboutwhatGodcaresabout.
Becausethousayest,Iamrich,andincreasedwithgoods,andhaveneedofnothing;
andknowestnotthatthouartwretched,andmiserable,andpoor,andblind,and
naked:
Theyfeelfine,infacttheyfeelgreat!Buttheyarereallyamessandcantevenseeit.Hereis
selfrighteousnessinallitsglory.Theyhaveeverythingtheyneed.Theydontneedrebukeor
correction;theydontneedanyonetotellthemanything;theyknowitallandtheyhaveitall.
Wecanseethisattitudeclearlytodayandmosthaveseenitevenintheirownhearts.
Thereisthistendencytolookattheorganizationanditsinstitutionsandswellwithprideover
theseexternalthings.ThisisthesameasthedisciplesinJesusdaywhentheyboastfullysaid,
Seewhatmannerofbuildingsarehere!Laodiceansarefullofprideandselfsatisfaction,they
feeltheycouldntbeanybetterandyettheycouldntbeworseoffinthesightofGod.Whata
terriblestateofaffairs.EvenJesus,whoalwayscomplimentswhereeverHepossiblycan,cant
sayanycommendationaboutthem.
Icounseltheetobuyofmegoldtriedinthefire,thatthoumayestberich;andwhite
raiment,thatthoumayestbeclothed,and[that]theshameofthynakedness[Tyndale
says,filthynakedness]donotappear;andanointthineeyeswitheyesalve,thatthou
mayestsee.
ThisshowstheloveofJesus;Heissotenderandkindandloving.Heislookingatthesepeople
andtheyareinsuchaterriblestateanddoesHesay;Oh,Imfinished,Imnotevengoingtotry
todoanythingwithyouguys?No,Hesays,Icounselthee.

Theyneedtheremediesfromtheheavenlymerchantman.Goldtriedinthefire;TheFaithand
LoveofJesus!Thisisnotourhumanfaithandlove;itisJesus'ownFaithandLovethatwastried
andproveninthefiresofafflictionwhenHewalkedthisearth.SatandoggedHisstepsandtried
ineverywaytogetHimtofailbutSatanlostthewar.ThisFaithandLovehasbeentestedand

HolySpirit.

buyfromHim?Wesimplyhavetosurrenderself;completelysurrenderourwretchedselvesto
Him;thisistheonlywaytheheavenlymerchandisecanbeobtained.
SpiritualdiscernmentonlycomestothosewhohavesurrenderedentirelytoChristandhave
trulybeenbornagain.TheHolySpiritworkswithusascloselyasHecan;ifweonlysurrendera

taughtwemustbetotallysurrendered.

HereHeissaying,ImtellingyouthisbecauseIloveyou!HowcanHelovecreatureslikethis?
ButHedoes,andtheressomethingsoencouraginginwhatfollows:
Behold,Istandatthedoor,andknock:ifanymanhearmyvoice,andopenthedoor,I

Ashumanbeings,ifweknewsomebodywhowashorribleandobnoxiousandindifferenttous

Noticethatthismessageistheonlyoneaddressedspecificallytoindividuals;thereisnohope
thatthewholecongregationwillrepent.Heiscallingouttotheindividuals,IfAnyMan!No
willingonewillbeoverlooked.Thisissocomforting,asthefaithfulfeelveryaloneattimes
thesedays.Thisissuchabeautifulpromise;Jesushastocomeinbecausethereisnohopeatall
ifwekeepHimout.
TohimthatovercomethwillIgranttositwithmeinmythrone,evenasIalso
overcame,andamsetdownwithmyFatherinhisthrone.Hethathathanear,lethim

Christinus,thehopeofglory;thatiswhattheLoudCryis.GodsLawisactuallyHisCharacter,
wemustobeyittolive,butwecantdosobecausewehavenorighteousnessofourown;none
atall!Nohumanbeingonthefaceofthisearthcanbesavedwithoutaoneononerelationship
withJesusasSaviour,andtheHolySpiritWhowillteachyoueverythingandwillempoweryou
tototallyceasefromsinning;somethingnohumancando.ChristkepttheLawperfectlyand

wretchedness.
Notice,thisisnotjustacredittousofsomethingthatwedontreallyhave;Hetrulygivesitto
us!Hewastemptedinallpointslikeaswearebutneverfellorsinned;HisVictoryisgivento
youifyouchoosetohaveit.Whentemptationcomes,wehavetochoose,willIgothewaymy
feelingsaretakingme?ORWillIrealizethatthisisSatanstemptationtotakemeawayfrommy
safetyinChristandsochooseJesusVictoryandseethattemptationvanish,throughthepower
oftheindwellingChrist.
RememberthestoryJesustoldofthedebtorthatowedatremendousamounttothecreditor?
TheBiblesayshehadnothingtopayhisdebtwith.Nowhowmuchisnothing?Couldheinvestit
andhopegraduallytoearninterestandsopaythedebt?No;Hehadnothing!Nohopeofever
payingatall.ThisishowwearewithGodsLaw.Itisourcreditor.Weoweitourlivesandwe
havenothingtopay.Evenourbestdeedsareonlyfilthyrags.Beforeanyrealchangecanoccur
inanyoneslife,hemustrealizethis.ThisiswhatitmeanstofallontheRockandbebroken.As
longaswestillfeelthatinsomewaywecanmakeourselvesgoodorjustdevelopthegood
thatisinus,wewillneverknowthepowerofGodtorecreateJesuslifeinus.
Whentemptationcomes,ifwebeginatalltoexcuseit,saying,Oh,itsnotthatimportant
Justthisoncewontmatter,orWellifthatpersondidthattome,theydeservemetodothis
tothem!Assoonaswebegintoexcusesin,wewillfall.Remember,theycrucifiedourLord,
andHeneverretaliatedexceptwithlovingforgiveness!Heofferstogivethatkindofmindtous;
HisLoving,victoriousheartandmind.
Desireforthethingsofthisworldwillgo,onlyaswearewillingtobemadewilling.Godpleads
butneverforcesandHispowercomesinonlyaswewantitandchoosetohaveit.Wemust
reallydesiretohavetheVictory,andseekGodwithallourheartandHewillcertainlybefound
andsatisfyoureveryneed.Themiracleofrecreationwillbeoursaswesurrenderandchoose
tohaveitdoneforus.Neverforgetthisisalifeanddeathmatter!Itisnotagame.
ThefollowingaresomeconsiderationsinregardstorecoveryfromthefatalLaodiceandisease.
Thesearenottoberegardedasanotherseriesofworksormagicformulasthatifyoudothis
thensomethingwillhappen,no;completeSurrenderistheonlyway.Thereareamultitudeof
worksrelatedplansinthechurchandtheworld;stepstotake,ladderstoclimb,plansto
follow,programstocarryout;itisallsomuchmanmadegarbage.Onlycomplete,total

1.Admitit!Goddoesntlie;soevenifyoucantseeit,believeitandadmitit.Realizethatwhen
Godsayssomething,itistrueandHemeanswhatHesays!AlsoHeisnorespecterofpersons;
whatdoesthatmean?ItmeansthatHeisjustaswillingtodosomethingforyou,asHeistodo
itforanyoneelse.Yes,justaswillingtosaveandhelpyouasHewastohelpDaniel,Joseph,
DavidorJohn!ThePowerthatworkedforthemisjustaswillingtoworkforyou.Admittingthe
truthofthismessagethatIampoor,blind,miserableandnaked;admittingitinyourheartand
beforeGodinyourprayerscausesachangeofattitudeinthebeliever.Itbeginstoopenupthe
mindtospiritualreality.
2.Repentandaskforhelptosee:PleadbeforeGod,realizingitisamatterofLifeorDeath!Ask
theFatherinthenameofJesusforthepersonalTeacher,theHolySpirittoteachyou.
Repentanceisamostmisunderstoodpartofthesalvationprocess.Peopleseemtothinkthat

Yousee,bybringingtoourremembrancesinsofourpast,wearetaughtbytheHolySpiritto
becomemorehumbleandrealizemorefullythemercyofGodtosavesuchaoneasweare.This
spiritofgratitudeandhumilityiswhatisofgreatvaluewithGod;thisisacontriteheart.Itis
directlyoppositetotheproud,selfsufficientLaodicean.
Manythinkwhenthoughtsofsomepastsincomeintotheirmindsthatthisisthedeviland
shouldberejected.Yes,ifthethoughtstellyouthereisnohopeandyoucannotbeforgiven,
thenrejectthem.ButmanytimestheHolySpiritbringsthingstousfordifferentreasons;to
deepenrepentance;toteachmorelessonsfromit;toshowusthingsthatstillneedtobemade
right;tohelpusunderstandpresenttrials;toremindusofthepitwhenceweweredug;and
manyotherthings.Itisthisprocessalsothatdeepensourunderstandingandourhatredagainst
sinwhenwecanseemoreandmoreclearlyhowselfishandwickedourcourseofactionwas,
andhowitaffectedandharmedothersaroundus.Eveninheaventhesaints,althoughthey
