SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

INSTALLATION

Installing, starting up, and servicing air-conditioning equipment can be hazardous due to system pressures, electrical components and equipment location.
Only trained, qualified installers and service technicians
should install, start-up, and service this equipment.
When working on air-conditioning equipment, observe precautions in the literature, on tags, stickers, and labels attached
to the equipment.
Follow all safety codes. Wear safety glasses and work
gloves. Use care in handling equipment.

The Phase Monitor accessory package contains the

following:
Phase Monitor, part no. HK35AC002
Installation instructions
The following items must be field supplied:
2 sheet metal screws
18 gage wires and terminals as required

Install Phase Monitor On unit, remove access panel

and control box cover. Attach the Phase Monitor to the high
voltage section on the control box using 2 sheet metal screws.

Make Electrical Connections (See Fig. 1)

Before performing service or maintenance operations on
unit, turn off main power switch to unit. If gas unit, shut off
gas supply before shutting off main power. Electrical shock
can cause personal injury or death. TAG DISCONNECT
SWITCH WITH A SUITABLE WARNING LABEL.

GENERAL
The Phase Monitor accessory will monitor the sequence of
three-phase electrical systems to provide phase reversal protection. The Phase Monitor will also monitor the phase voltage
inputs (L1, L2, L3) to provide phase loss protection for a threephase device.
NOTE: The Phase Monitor will work on either a Delta or Wye
power connection.

Phase Reversal Protection The phase monitor

has a bypass function based on line cycles that is factory set for
10 minutes. If the phase monitor determines that all phases are
in correct relationship for 10 consecutive minutes and 24 vac is
applied, relay K1 will remain energized regardless of the phase
sequence of the inputs. See Fig. 1.
The bypass function will be reset if all three phases are restored in a phase loss event. The control operation timing is
based on 60 Hz system. When the control is used on 50 Hz system, the bypass time may be longer since this timer is based on
line cycles.

NOTE: It may be necessary to remove the terminals from

some wires and re-terminate the wires with the appropriate terminal type.
1. Connect field-supplied wire from L1 on Phase Monitor to
C1 terminal 11 on compressor contactor 1.
2. Connect field-supplied wire from L2 on Phase Monitor to
C1 terminal 12 on compressor contactor 1.
3. Connect field-supplied wire from L3 on Phase Monitor to
C1 terminal 13 on compressor contactor 1.
NOTE: For units with two-pole contactor, connect L3 on
Phase Monitor to L3 of field power supply.
4. Connect field-supplied wire from COM terminal on
Phase Monitor to C terminal on control transformer
(TRAN).
5. Disconnect the wire from the control transformer
(TRAN) to terminal R on the connection board (TB).
6. Reconnect this wire to 24 vac terminal on Phase Monitor
(to circuit breaker [CB] which is connected to terminal 24
on transformer [TRAN]).
7. Connect field-supplied wire from Contactor terminal on
Phase Monitor to R terminal on connection board (TB).
8. Restore power to unit and check unit operation.

Phase Loss Protection If the phase monitor senses

that any of the 3 inputs (L1, L2, L3) does not have AC voltage,
relay K1 is deenergized. This phase loss protection is always
active as long as 24 vac is applied and is not affected by the bypass function. In the event of phase loss, the bypass function is
reset. Relay K1 is re-energized only when all three phases are
restored and are in correct sequence.
