Introduction

Architecture was always unlike other arts. Works of architects dont last like
other artworks. Paintings can be stored in glass frames and can be removed
from the sun and rain thus prolonging their existence. Music and literature
dont even exist in the physical domain. Architecture can be long lasting but
goes through the aging process. And exactly that is its beauty. But what
happens if we strip it of that quality? Well het temporary architecture that is
used for many purposes.
The most important trait of temporary architecture is its exploration of new
materials and new constructions. It is also important that its building process
be as simple as it can be. Its greatest disadvantage is that it can be not
enough thought through just because it is temporary. Sometimes it is reduced
to complex tents. That temporary architecture has no value but on the other
hand we have some exquisite examples. The best temporary architecture
happens on World Fairs (EXPO).

Worlds Fair
Expo (short for "exposition", and also known as World Fair and World's Fair) is
the name given to various large public exhibitions held since the mid-19th
century. They are the third largest event in the world in terms of economic and
cultural impact, after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic games. They have
been organized for more than one and a half centuries longer than both the
(modern) Olympic games and the World Cup. The first Expo was held in The
Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, in 1851 under the title Great Exhibition
of the Works of Industry of All Nations. The Great Exhibition as it is often
called was an idea of Prince Albert, Queen Victorias husband, and was the
first international exhibition of manufactured products. As such, it influenced
the development of several aspects of society including art and design
education, international trade and relations, and even tourism. Also, it was the

precedent for the many international exhibitions, later called Worlds Fairs,
which were subsequently held to the present day.
The majorities of the structures are temporary, and are dismantled at the end
of the expo. Towers from several of these fairs are notable exceptions. By far
the most famous of these is the Eiffel Tower, built for the Exposition
Universelle (1889), which is now the most well-known symbol of its host city
Paris. Surprisingly, some then contemporary critics wanted the tower
dismantled after the fair's conclusion.
Other major structures that were held over from these fairs:
The Crystal Palace, from the first World's Fair in London in 1851, chosen
because it could be recycled to recoup losses, was such a success that
it was moved and intended to be permanent, only to be destroyed by a
fire (of its contents) in 1936.
The 1876 Centennial Exposition's main building still in Fairmount Park,
Philadelphia, and serving as the new home for the Please Touch
Museum.
The World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne,
constructed for the Melbourne International Exhibition (1880).
The main buildings of Expo '98, in Lisbon, were completely integrated in
the city itself.
In Brussels, the Atomium still stands at the site of the 1958 exposition. It is
an 165 billion times enlarged Iron-Atom shaped building.
The Space Needle in Seattle was the symbol of the 1962 World's Fair, and the
US pavilion from that fair became the Pacific Science Center. The Seattle
Center Monorail still operates daily.
In Croatia the most famous is the Art Pavilion in Zagreb that was built as a
pavilion of Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonija for Worlds Fair 1896. in
Budapest. It was later moved to Zagreb.

Comments
The approach to designing temporary architecture can be more open and free
for experimenting. Temporary architecture can very aggressively emphasize
space because it doesnt have the intention of staying too long. Also,
temporary architecture can introduce a whole variety of bad, low quality
solutions. It is the subsequence of the consumers society that needs a lot of
things in short time. Low quality of the buildings is happening because of the
fact that they stay for short periods of time and they dont invocate loud
enough public outcries. On the other hand, temporary architecture can offer
great solutions and in some examples it stops being temporary and becomes
even a main symbol of space, city or a country.
