Purpose

This document covers guidelines and instructions for installing Oracle 11gR2
x32 Client and Oracle 11gR2 x64 Client.

1.5

Installation Guidelines

There are two versions of the Oracle 11gR2 Client: a 32 bit client and a 64
bit client. The following table lists which operating systems these Oracle
11gR2 clients can be installed.

While Windows 7 and Windows Server 2003/2008 are 64 bit operating

systems, many query applications at Intel are still 32 bit, and only a few, at
this time, are 64 bit.
The table below shows which the applications that were tested for Oracle
11gR2. It shows the product owner, whether the application is Windows 7
ready, and which Oracle client is required for the application. (To have your
application posted in this list, please contact Kevin Peffley at with subject as

Other considerations:

If your query application is not Windows 7 Ready, this means that

you should be running XP and, if you require Oracle 11gR2, then you
should install the Oracle 11gR2 x32 Client.

It is possible to install both the 11gR2 x32 and x64 Oracle clients
on Windows 7. This will give you the ability to run the Oracle x64 bit

client for applications that can use it, and you can run the Oracle x32 bit
client for applications that cannot run in x64 bit mode. For example, you
want to run XYZ application queries with the x64 bit Oracle client, and you
also require the x32 bit client to run DeskI queries. You may need
instructions from your application product owner for switching from one
Oracle client to another.

It is not recommended to install 11gR2 x32/64 with the 10gR2 x32

client. While it is possible to install 11gR2 on top of 10gR2, this
combination of Oracle clients has not been tested together and is not
supported.

1.6

Prerequisites

The following prerequisites should be observed before installing Oracle

11gR2.

It is recommended that if you already have an installation of Oracle on

your system, that you first uninstall it before installing Oracle 11gR2.
See the instruction guide Uninstall Oracle 10gR2.doc for more details in
the document, Uninstalling Oracle 10gR2.doc. For other versions of
Oracle, please consult your application support person for instructions.

It is recommended that you close all applications, except Internet

Explorer, before installing Oracle 11gR2.

4.1

Desktop Intelligence Issues

Desktop Intelligence for Xi SP3 is not compatible with Oracle x64 bit drivers.
DeskI will display the following error message if you have the x64 Oracle
drivers installed, but not the x32 bit drivers.

If you are having connection problems with DeskI, make sure you have the
x32 bit version of Oracle installed. Should you have another application that
requires the x64 bit Oracle drivers, note that it is possible to have both
11gR2 x64 and x32 bit drivers installed at the same time.

4.2

PL SQL Developer Issues

The following error message is displayed by PL SQL Developer if no Oracle 32

bit driver is found.

4.3

Oracle ODBC Issues on Windows 7

Some users, especially JMP users, set up their connections to Oracle

databases using the ODBC Admin tool. If you are running Windows 7, note
that the default admin tool on Windows 7 for ODBC connects with x64 bit
drivers. This will not work with x32 bit applications, like JMP 8.0.
This means that you will need to find the x32 bit ODBC Admin tool. Here are
some instructions:
1. Launch Windows Explorer.
2. Enter C:\Windows\SysWOW64 in the address bar. (This folder
contains application drivers for x32 applications. Dont let the 64 here
fool you!)
3. Enter the file name odbcad32.exe in the search box, as shown below.

4. Right-click on the file odbcad32.exe, and select Create shortcut.

Click Yes to create the shortcut on your Desktop.
5. The shortcut will be named, odbcad32.exe Shortcut. Find the
shortcut on your Desktop, right-click it and select Properties.
a. Click the General tab to rename the shortcut, if you like.

b. Right-click again, and select either Pin to Taskbar or Pint to Start

Menu. This way you will always have it handy to create your
ODBCs.
6. Now you can click on your shortcut to launch the x32 bit ODBC Admin
Tool and create your Oracle ODBCs for your x32 bit application.

Uninstalling Oracle 11gR2

This section contains instructions for uninstalling 11gR2.

Oracle 11gR2, unlike most versions of Oracle, cannot be uninstalled using
the Oracle Universal Installer. Instead, 11gR2 comes with a command
procedure, deinstall.bat, which performs the following operations:

Stops and deletes all Oracle services.

Removes most files and folders under the root Oracle folder.

Some files and folders must be removed manually, after a reboot.

5.1

Launching deinstall.bat

The command procedure, deinstall.bat, can be found in the following

directory path on your C: drive:
For the Oracle x32 bit client, look in the following directory:
C:\Oracle11gR2_x32\product\11.2.0\client_1\deinstall
For the Oracle x64 bit client, look in the following directory:
C:\Oracle11gR2_x64\product\11.2.0\client_1\deinstall
If you are using a Windows 7 system, right click on Deinstall.bat, and select
Run as administrator.

Removing Oracle Files

Before removing all other Oracle 11gR2 files, you will need to reboot your
system to remove Oracle access from the remaining Oracle files. Otherwise,
you will not be able to remove the files.
After the reboot, click Start and select the Windows command prompt. Enter
the following commands:
C:
CD \
RD /s

Oracle_11gR2_x32

CD \Program Files (x86)

RD /s Oracle
For each time you enter the RD command, respond with Y to remove the
files.
Your Oracle 11gR2 uninstall is now complete.
