Conference 2015

2015 CONFERENCE
Lest We Forget

Thursday 2 Sunday 5 July 2015

Claudelands Conference and Exhibition Centre
Hamilton

Welcome from our President

It's that time of year again when we
make a decision about going to
conference. This year, it's in my
home town and I can tell you that if
you come you are in for a real treat,
as Steve Ross, the local branch
president, describes Waikato in his
introduction as the stunning
Waikato.
We are heading for much better times so this is a perfect
opportunity to up-skill yourselves at the many workshops
that have been arranged, so that you can take them back
to your businesses and apply them.
If you are like me and have been to several conferences,
it is an opportunity to catch up with some old friends and
let them know what you have been up to in the last year.
It is also a chance to meet our new CEO, David Kelly,
and I would especially like to welcome him to his first
conference. I am sure he is looking forward to meeting
as many members as he can, so please come and
introduce yourselves and find out what ideas he has for
the organisation going forward.
This year we have brought back the Kids Club, and as
the conference is at the beginning of the school holidays,
it gives those members with children an opportunity to
experience the conference, make some new friends and
learn some valuable tips for their businesses.
To all of the suppliers that give our organisation their
support, I thank you, and look forward to seeing you
again and introducing you to as many new members as
we can.
To the Waikato Master Builders, I hope to see many of
you at this conference - after all, it is on your home patch,
and it would be great to show the rest of the country just
how hospitable the Waikato people are, and what a lovely
part of the country it is that we call home.
Look forward to seeing you all there.

Conference 2015
Welcome from the Waikato Branch
On behalf of the Waikato members I would like to welcome
you and your families to the stunning Waikato. The
Waikato has hosted Conference in the past and we are
pleased to have this back in our region for 2015. As the
fourth largest city in New Zealand we can offer a region
that is family friendly with lots of activities and places of
interest to visit. We have a rich cultural mix coupled with a
vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene, extensive shopping
options and leading arts sector.
The Hamilton and Waikato region is well known for its
nature-based tourism, underground wonders, Middleearth movie magic and iconic Waikato River. We can offer
something for everyone, including a range of walking
hiking and cycling tracks. From native bush and farmland
to historic landmarks, wetlands and breath-taking summit
views over rivers, lakes and plains, the regions tracks and
trails have something to suit all ability levels.
Along with being the dairy capital of New Zealand we have
New Zealands world class Avantidrome and also boast
the exciting worldwide recognised Hobbiton.
For those who like to shop we have brilliant shopping
complexes with no long traffic queues and free parking.
For the children we have indoor heated swimming pools
and for the slightly older children there are challenges
such as the Daytona Indoor raceway. You can visit the
Sky City Casino, soak up some history at the Waikato
Museum, discover the animal encounters at Hamilton Zoo,
take a stroll around the iconic Hamilton Gardens or relax
with a picnic at Hamilton Lake. For those of you who are
car enthusiasts a visit to the Classic museum where you
can have a look at the cars of yesteryear will bring back
some memories.
Hamilton is the gateway to many other areas of interest.
The timing of Conference coincides with the beginning of
the school holidays so you can make Conference in
Hamilton the start of your trip. From here it is a short car
ride to the tourist destinations within Midlands and the
greater region.
The Waikato Registered Master Builders are very
proactive and are here to provide you with an enjoyable
and valued Conference Experience. As your hosts we are
happy to assist with any queries you may have during your
stay here.

Apiata was part of a New
Zealand Special Air Service
(NZSAS) Troop in Afghanistan in
2004 that was attacked by about
20 enemy fighters while camped
for the night in a rural area.
Rocket-propelled
grenades
destroyed one of the troops vehicles and immobilised
another. Apiata was blown off the bonnet of the vehicle
he had been sleeping on, while two other soldiers in or
near the vehicle were wounded by shrapnel, one of
them seriously.
After finding cover and assessing the soldiers injuries,
Apiata carried him across 70 m of exposed ground to
reach the troops main position. He then helped fight off
the attackers.
Corporal Apiata received his VC on 26 July 2007 at
Government House in Wellington.
