Evening Functions
ITM Welcome Function Hobbiton
Friday 3 July
This afternoon we travel to Matamata to experience the
real Middle-Earth with a visit to the Hobbiton Movie
Set, the bucolic setting for The Shire that featured in
the Peter Jackson directed films, The Lord of the Rings
and The Hobbit Trilogies.
Your tour starts with a drive through the picturesque
1,250 acre sheep farm with spectacular views across
to the Kaimai Ranges.
Your guide will escort you through the twelve acre site
recounting fascinating details of how the Hobbiton
Movie set was created.
Enjoy pre-dinner drinks in The Green Dragon Inn
which was the meeting place for all residents of
Hobbiton. An exact replica of the Green Dragon Inn,
as seen in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film
trilogies, has been masterfully recreated transporting
you to Middle-Earth.
We move through to the fully themed party marquee for
our Hobbit Feast, beverages crafted specially for
Hobbiton and entertainment by an authentic fiddler.

Mark Southcombe
Mark is a Senior Lecturer and
Architecture Programme Director
at
Victoria
University
of
Wellington,
School
of
Architecture, and a Fellow of the
NZIA.
He is responsible for teaching
architecture
design
and
supervision of design-led research.
He is also a design practitioner principal of Southcombe
Architects based in Wellington.
Mark is the co-author of Kiwi Prefab: Cottage to Cutting
Edge published in 2012. Prefabricated architecture has
been a part of the New Zealand landscape almost as
long as people have built here. Particularly suited to our
lightweight buildings, prefabrication is as much about
collective, efficient, improved building processes as it is
about a quality built result. Say Mark.
His recent and previous research includes Rethinking
medium density housing, Renegotiating the seismic
resilience of heritage building fabric. Architectural
fabrication, and prefabrication, Design as research
medium, and design practice teaching.
