    JohnTheBaptistdidNOTsurvivebyeatingadultlocusts,theflyinggrasshopperlikeinsect.
    Whiletheconsumptionofinsectlocustswasnotcompletelyunheardof,itwasmostuncommonandhighly
    unusual,relegatedtolastditchoptionsinstarksurvivalsituations.Hecertainlycouldhaveeatenthosebugs
    intheirshortseason,occasionally,wheneverlocustlarvawouldpupate,matureintoadults,andthenemerge
    abovegroundenmasse,eat,sometimesswarm,mate(afterwhichthemalesdie),andlayneweggcasesin
    theground,afterwhichthefemalesalsodie.
    ItisquitepossiblethateventssurroundingthereferencesinMatthewandMarkcoincidedwithatime(ashort
    season)whengrasshopperlikelocustswereavailabletoJohninabundance.Yieldinghimabonanzaofhigh
    proteinsustenance,formanyadultandlarvalinsectsareawonderfulsourceof"survivalchow".And,there
    isalwaystheveryrealisticpossibilityofGod'sProvidenceintheprovisionofsustenance,andthepossibility
    thatJohnTheBaptistwasnotoutinthewilderness,livingonlocustsandwildhoney,foralongperiodoftime
    butjustforashortseason.
    While,intheIsraelregion,therearealwayssomelocustsavailable,itisduringandshortlyaftertherainy

    seasonswhentheyareseeninanyabundance.Throughouttheyear,anyavailablelocustsarewellscattered
    amongthefewlush,green,wellwateredareaswhereeithernaturaloragriculturalvegetationpredominates.
    Themajorityofthelandsinthatregionaredry,rocky,barrenandvoidofvegetationandlocustsdonot
    hangoutinthesandydeserts.Undernormalclimaticconditions,locustsaresolitarycreatures.But
    occasionally,intimesofscarcevegetation,whethercausedbytoomanylocustsbyalackofrainorbya
    combinationofthetwo,locustsbecomeagitated,beginflyingabout,thentheybegintouncustomarily
    congregateinlargemasses.Thereleaseofchemicalprecursors,pheromones,inducesamassive
    coordinatedhatchofadditionallocusts,whichfurtheragitatestheevergrowingmobofinsects.Andthey
    begintoswarm,joiningtogetherwithanyothermobs,inducingeachtoalsoswarm.Andalthoughlocustscan
    beagriculturallyproblematicwhenevertheirnumbersaregreat,theytrulybecomea"Plague"whenthey
    swarmandproduceruinthroughoutentireregions.Aplagueoflocustswillcausefamineaftertheyhave
    ravagedflourishingcrops,otherplantsandtreesthroughoutaregion.
    Locustswarmsarenotevenadependableannualevent,andifJohnTheBaptistweresoobservantorso
    luckyastodiscoveranareawherefemalelocustswere,enmasse,layingtheireggcasesintheground,he
    couldharvestthespent,dying,adultfemalelocusts.Buthewouldhavetowaitmanymonthstodigupand
    harvestanylocustlarvaorpupaeuntilaftertheyhadprogressedfromembryosintoanediblestageof
    development.And,thatassumesheobservedanareawhereeggcaseswerebeinglaidandknewwhereto
    laterdig,expendingmuchenergytocoverafewacres.
    Insteadoffeastingoninsects,itismuchmorelikelyJohnTheBaptistsurvivedona"beanfeast"of
    locustpodssincehewasoutinthewildernessforagreatlengthoftime.
