Global Warming!!!
What is global warming?
An increase in the earths average atmospheric temperature that causes
corresponding climate changes and that may result from the
greenhouse effect.

What is the greenhouse effect?

When CO2 gas absorbs IR radiation coming from the earth and reflects it
back to the earth.

What causes it?

The emission of greenhouse gases.
Electrical pollution.
Burning of fossil fuels

What are greenhouse gases?

Gases that increase radiation on earth:
CO2 , NOx, CH4, H2O(g), CFCs.

Too much Greenhouse effect can be harmful:

Melting of Polar ice caps cause sea levels to rise.
More Draughts and Floods than usual.
Disturbs the natural environment/ ecosystems.

Deforestation
What is deforestation?
Deforestation is the process of cutting down trees.

Consequences of deforestation:
Reduced Biodiversity

Loss of CO2 fixation, hence CO2 increases, thus global

warming.
Decrease in O2 production
Soil Erosion
Flooding
Destruction of natural habitats

How to prevent deforestation?

Reduce cutting down of trees.

Increase the growth & plantation of trees.

Acid Rain
What is Acid Rain?

Precipitation (Rain, hail, sleet or snow) containing relatively high

concentrations of acid-forming chemicals as the pollutants from coal
smoke, chemical manufacturing, and smelting, that have been released
into the atmosphere and combined with water vapour: harmful to the
environment.

What contribute towards acid in rain?

When water vapor and oxygen in the atmosphere react with sulfur
dioxide to produce sulfuric acid or with various oxides of nitrogen,
NOx, to give Nitric acid.

What are the effects of acid rain?

Eutrophication
What is eutrophication?
The pollution of freshwater due to high concentration of mineral ions
(nitrates) that leach from the soils into the waterways.

Causes of eutrophication:
When farmers add inorganic fertilizers to soils to replace mineral ions
lost when crops are removed. The waterways are polluted due to the
leaching of ions in fertilizers from soils.

Consequences of Eutrophication:
Rapid reproduction of algae causes agal bloom.
This prevents light from penetrating further into water, and
submerged plants are not able to photosynthesize, so they die.
The algae will die as they run out of nitrates.
Bacteria decay the dead plants and algae and reproduce. Since their
respiration uses more and more oxygen the water becomes Anoxic
and life in the water will die.

Preventing eutrophication:
Farmers can make more use of organic farming practices.
Governments can legislate to enforce treatment of sewage before
discharging into water ways.
