Introduction:
A drilling machine is used to cut holes into or through metal, wood, or other materials.
Drilling machines use a drilling tool that has cutting edges at its point. This cutting tool is
held in the drill press by a chuck or Morse taper and is rotated and fed into the work at
variable speeds. Drilling machines may be used to perform other operations. They can
perform countersinking, boring, counterboring, spot facing, reaming, and tapping. Drill press
operators must know how to set up the work, set speed and feed, and provide for coolant to
get an acceptable finished product. The size or capacity of the drilling machine is usually
determined by the largest piece of stock that can be center-drilled. For instance, a 15-inch
drilling machine cans center-drill a 30-inch-diameter piece of stock. Other ways to determine
the size of the drill press are by the largest hole that can be drilled, the distance between the
spindle and column, and the vertical distance between the worktable and spindle.

Tools:

The main parts are Base: The base of the machine is made from cast iron material and supports the
vertical column. The base is provided with holes to secure it firmly to the table or
bench with the help of bolts and nuts.
Vertical column: The column is a hollow steel pipe mounted rigidly on the base. It
supports the drill head and the worktable.
Work table: The work table supports the workpiece to be drilled. It is usually
provided with T- slots that help the workpiece to be clamped rigidly on the table. The
table can be raised or lowered and can be clamped to the vertical column at any
desired position. This helps to accommodate different sizes of workpieces on the
table. The table can also be swiveled around the vertical column to any desired
position.
Drill head: A fixed drill head located at the top end of the vertical column carries an
electric motor and a mechanism through which the spindle can be made to rotate, as
well as slide up and down. The top end of the spindle is connected to a stepped cone
pulley which obtains power (rotary motion) from the motor shaft through a V-belt
arrangement. The speed of the spindle can be varied by changing the belt position on
the cone pulleys. The lower end of the spindle carries a socket/drill chuck to hold the
drill bit rigidly during operation. The vertical movement of the spindle and hence the

drill bit, is controlled by the hand feed lever located at the front end of the machine
facing the operator.

Operations:

Figure 3: Different types of operations

Drilling: It is an operation by which holes are produced in solid metal by means of revolving
tool called Drill.
Reaming: This is an accurate way of sizing and finishing a pre-existing hole. Multi tooth
cutting tool. Accuracy of 0.005mm can be achieved
Boring: Boring is a process of enlarging an existing hole by a single point cutting tool.
Boring operation is often preferred because we can correct hole size, or alignment and can
produce smooth finish. Boring tool is held in the boring bar which has the shank. Accuracy of
0.005mm can be achieved.
Counter boring: This operation uses a pilot to guide the cutting action to accommodate the
heads of bolts. Fig. 10 illustrates the counter boring, countersunk and spot facing processes.
Countersinking: Special angled cone shaped enlargement at the end of the hole to
accommodate the screws. Cone angles of 60, 82, 90, 100, 110, 120
Tapping: Tapping is the process by which internal threads are formed. It is performed either
by hand or by machine. Minor diameter of the thread is drilled and then tapping is done.

Bench Drilling Machine is also called Sensitive drilling machine because of its accurate
and well balanced spindle.

Discussion:
We learned a lot of things from todays experiment. Such as- A drilling machine comes in
many shapes and sizes, from small hand-held power drills to bench mounted and finally
floor-mounted models. They can perform operations other than drilling, such as
countersinking, counterboring, reaming, and tapping large or small holes; the drilling
machines can perform all of these operations. Safety plays a critical part in any operation
involving power equipment. Procedures for servicing, maintaining, and setting up the work,
proper methods of selecting tools, and work holding devices to get the job done safely
without causing damage to the equipment, myself, or someone nearby.
