CEMENTING DESIGN
20 Conductor Casing
At 180ft casing setting depth, no drilling require as the formation around this depth is soft
formation with lithology of sand and soft shales. Pile and driven technique will be used to
set this casing thus no cementing require for this casing.

13.25 Surface Casing

Single stage cementing process with single slurry with density of 14.175ppg is to be used
for this casing. If gas is detected while drilling, the slurry is to contain some form of gas
block. Portland Class G cement will be used for this section with 20% excess, which will
be verified by fluid caliper. Top of cement is at surface. Casing is to be centralized to
give minimum of 85% across cement slurries. Centralizer placement program to be run
before casing operation.

9.625 Intermediate Casing

Same as above casing, single stage cementing process with single slurry with density of
14.175ppg is to be used for this casing. If gas is detected while drilling, the slurry is to
contain some form of gas block. Portland Class G cement will be used for this section
with 20% excess, which will be verified by fluid caliper. Top of cement is at 660ft above
previous casing shoe. Casing is to be centralized to give minimum of 85% across cement
slurries. Centralizer placement program to be run before casing operation.

7 Production Casing
A single stage cementing process with single slurry with density of 14.175ppg is to be
used for this production casing with 20% excess. The main problem for this section is to
achieve good zonal isolations with the sands close to each other and some even with
water contacts as the production casing is set across gas zones, with the zones are not far
apart each other. Also the cement slurry density of 14.175ppg must be able to withstand
the fracture pressure as not to create micro annuli or shear / tangential cement sheath
failure post job. The effect of hot/cold/hot during stimulation and well test are to be
modeled during cement design to ensure correct recipe. Top of cement is at 660ft above
previous casing shoe.

OVERVIEW OF CEMENTING PROCESS

Blow-Out Preventer (BOP)

BOP selection is an important aspect for every drilling platform as it acts as the
preventer for the most terrible problem for a drilling well which is blow out.
Everything that involves safety should not be compromised. So, the BOP selection
criteria has been set to be at least 50% greater than the highest formation pore
pressure. Table below shows some of the BOP options based on their API class and
working pressure.
API Class
2M
3M
5M
10M
15M

Working Pressure (105 Pa)

(psi)
138 (2000)
207 (3000)
345 (5000)
689 (10,000)
1034 (15,000)

Service Condition
Light duty
Low pressure
Medium pressure
High pressure
Extreme pressure

Highest formation pore pressure at 9900 ft = psi

Minimum BOP pressure rating with extra 50% consideration
psi X 1.50 = psi

By referring to the BOP selection table, the most feasible BOP class that is able to resist
the highest possible pressure is BOP from API Class M

COST & DRILLING SCHEDULE

Estimating capital, one of the main ingredients for any cash flow calculation, is largely in
the domain of the engineering community. Petroleum engineers are responsible for
drilling costs and are often involved with other engineers in estimating costs for pipelines,
facilities, and other elements of the infrastructure for the development of an oil/gas field.
All practicing engineers have heard horror stories of cost and schedule overruns, and
some have even been involved directly with projects that had large overruns. Why did
these overruns occur, and what could have been done to encompass the actual cost in the
project estimate? Overruns can result from:

inefficiencies,

unscheduled problems and delays,

changes in design or execution, or

a host of other reasons

The upstream oil/gas industry is a risky business. One inherently risky operation that we
routinely undertake is drilling and completing a well. Thus, it should come as no surprise
that estimating the total cost and time of a drilling prospect is a common application of
uncertainty analysis.
Optimizing the drilling operations depends on understanding of the interaction between
the drilling equipment and the geological formations at any given site and a reasonable
estimation of the rate of drilling, given the operational parameters used in drilling.
Therefore, it is very important to develop a model for estimation of the drilling rate.
