EPA proposes
$14 million plan

Relay for Life

Funds would remove lead, arsenic soil

at 33 residential properties affected
by former Sherwin-Williams paint plant
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency officials said theyre looking at September to officially decide on a recently proposed, $14
million plan to excavate and replace soil contaminated with lead
and arsenic on at least 33 residential properties in Voorhees and
Gibbsboro as a result of land and
waterways contaminated by a former Sherwin-Williams paint
manufacturing plant in Gibbsboro.
That was the latest news out of
an EPA-hosted public information session at the Gibbsboro Senior Center on June 11 regarding
the environmentally hazardous
Sherwin-Williams/Hilliards
Creek superfund site, the history
of which stretches back to the
mid-1800s when paint manufacturers first began operating in
the area.
The recently proposed plan
would be funded entirely by Sherwin-Williams and would be con-

ducted under EPA supervision.

At the June 11 meeting, EPA
Remedial Project Manager Ray
Klimcsak said Sherwin-Williams
has come to the table in the
processes, which would include
digging up soil at the properties
and then properly disposing of
the soil at offsite facilities
equipped to handle such environmental hazardous waste.
Areas where soil was extracted
would then be backfilled with
new, clean soil, during which
time new plant life would be replanted if necessary.
According to Klimcsak, after
the EPA potentially reaches
whats known as a Record of Decision in September, the next
phase known as remedial design would begin, which the
EPAs website describes as the
time when the technical specifications for cleanup remedies and
technologies are designed.
Klimcsak said he thinks its
reasonable to estimate that shovplease see JOHNSTON, page 13

School East. More than 20 teams and 220 participants helped raise more than $67,000. At the
event, Jeanette Golden, left, event chair of last years Relay for Life of Voorhees, presented a
plaque to honor former entertainment chair Pam Notaro, who lost her battle with cancer in December. On the right are Notaros husband Joseph and her mother Diane Pirollo. For more photos,

Junior Police Academy

returns July 2024
Voorhees residents between ages of 1216
can learn about daily duties of VTPD officers
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Last July, the Voorhees Township Police Department held its
first-ever Voorhees Junior Police
Academy, and now one year later,
it's time for round two.
Due to what police officials describe as great feedback from
the Voorhees community and
VTPD officers, the department recently announced the return of
its Voorhees Junior Police Academy from July 20-24.
The program will once again
offer Voorhees residents between
the ages of 12-16 with an interest
in law enforcement a chance to
learn about the daily duties of
VTPD officers, as well as some of
the broader aspects of law.

Lt. Dennis Ober said the idea

for the academy originally arose
from the department receiving inquires from the public asking
whether it had some sort of junior police program.
A lot of kids will approach us
and ask whats the academy like,
and everybody always has these
preconceived notions of what the
police academy is like this
gives them an idea, Ober said.
Throughout the five-day program, police will choose 15 to 20
cadets to report to the Voorhees
Township Police Station every
day from 9 a.m. to about 1 p.m. or
2 p.m., during which time participants will engage in police-related activities such as physical fitplease see OFFICERS, page 10

his week has us thinking about

the future of our kids a lot.
High school seniors, eighth
graders and kindergarteners will all
celebrate graduations this week, closing one door behind them and opening
another in front of them.
Its a vast new world that these kids
and young adults are living in, one
that is drastically different from the
one in which their parents lived at
their age.
Technology has provided plenty of
good, plenty of opportunities that the
kids of even 10 to 20 years ago didnt
have. Its mind-boggling.
And its also potentially dangerous.
The Internet can give a person a voice
that can reach millions of people with

other areas, this is something plenty of

us would have loved to have had when
we were younger. With the opportunity, though, also comes the potential for
long-lasting damage.
Kids dont often listen to their parents and teachers when they try to
teach them lessons. So maybe they can
learn a lesson from pop star Iggy Azalea.
Last week, posts that Azalea made to
Twitter four years ago have resurfaced, with screen shots of her posts
showing insensitive sexual and racist

remarks. As a result, Azalea cancelled

a scheduled performance at Pittsburghs LGBT Pride event last weekend.
The Pittsburgh chapter of the Gay,
Lesbian & Straight Education Network didnt march in the Pittsburgh
Pride parade because Azalea was
scheduled to perform.
Azalea, who turned 25 years old this
month, is facing the music for things
she posted as a 21-year-old.
Its a lesson we can all learn from
once you post it, its there forever.
Even though Azalea deleted those
four-year-old Tweets, they were still
available for someone to find.
So, kids, be careful what you post.
Be careful what you do online. It may
seem innocent now, but it could come
back to haunt you years down the line.

He was there when you took your first

Dads arent always determined by biology, either. Maybe you have another influence in your life you would like to celebrate

Freeholders provide fans to

Camden County Seniors
By Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez
To help senior citizens beat the heat
this season, the Freeholder Board is once
again distributing
free fans. Camden
County residents age
60 and older with an
income of $25,000 or
less are eligible to receive a fan. There are
currently more than 100 fans ready
for immediate distribution with
more on the way.
Many senior citizens are living in
homes without air conditioning or
other means of cooling. When temperatures rise to dangerous levels,
these seniors should open windows
to release trapped air and use a fan
to circulate the air throughout the
home. This not only makes it more
comfortable, but more importantly
makes it safer.
During the hottest days of the year,
senior citizens should wear lightweight clothing and avoid strenuous
activity in the sun. If you must be
outside, wear a head covering, a
wide-brimmed hat or visor will, this
clothing will not only protect your
head from the intense rays of the
sun, it will also provide a shield for
your eyes. Those taking regular
medication should consult with
their physician. Some medications
cause an adverse reaction in hot
weather. Drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquids, warm and cool because
the body loses fluids in the heat,
drinking lots of liquids helps to
avoid dehydration.
When the weather warrants, the
Camden County Health Department
issues heat alerts and advises municipalities that it would be appropriate
to open cooling centers. This is done
when the when the combination of
hot temperatures and high humidity
become dangerous and can cause
heat related illnesses, especially in
senior citizens. Each municipality

in Camden County
has identified and is
responsible for opening its own municipal
cooling center. Please
call your town for the
closest location.
The early warning
signs of heat stress
are decreased energy,
slight loss of appetite,
faintness, light-headedness and nausea. People experiencing these symptoms should go to a cool
environment, drink liquids, remove
excess clothing and rest.
Serious signs of heat stress include
unconsciousness, rapid heartbeat,
throbbing headache, dry skin, chest
pain, mental confusion, irritability,
vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramps,
staggering and difficulty breathing.
People experiencing these symptoms should get immediate medical
attention. While waiting for help,
stay in a cool area, remove excess
clothing and drink water. In an
emergency, dial 911.
For more than a decade we have
worked with senior organizations
and municipal emergency management coordinators to distribute fans
to seniors. Please take the proper
precautions to ensure that this summer is safe and enjoyable.
To request a fan or to obtain more
information, please call the Camden
County Division of Senior Services
at (856) 858-3220. For other health related information, contact the Department of Health and Human
Services at (800) 999-9045.

ness training, marching exercises, flag raising and other related

ceremonies.
We go out and do physical
training, and we run and do sit
ups and show them what the
physical side is like, Ober said.
Ober said the academy will
also feature classroom lessons to
teach the cadets that officers do
much more than just drive
around and write speeding tickets, as the kids might believe.
We try to open them up to all
the laws that are out there and
where we get our powers from
and why that is, and its always a
Q&A session and theres always
what if scenarios, Ober said.
What if someone did this or
what if this happens, and we try
to open it to the broad aspects of
the law.
Another popular aspect of last
years academy that Ober said
will probably return this year is
the mock traffic stop, where the
cadets themselves will act as police officers and be guided on how
to conduct a traffic stop according
to police procedures.
With VTPD officers roleplaying as those whose cars were
stopped, Ober said there are multiple scenarios with potentially
good and bad outcomes, ranging
from a broken taillight to the discovery of a mock weapon or illegal substance.
We go through the steps of
what they would do, and communicate and really stress teamwork
and relying on other people, and
the kids really enjoyed that and I
think that was probably one of
the cooler things we did, Ober
said.
In addition to interest from
kids, the academy has also drawn
great interest from officers in the
department, with some even volunteering to come in on their

days off or stay on after a night

shift to view the program or help
in some way.
We have even more interest
now than we did last year and
more people want to get involved,
and I think thats pretty neat and
were pretty happy about that,
Ober said. Were preaching
teamwork to the kids, and were
getting that from our officers,
too.
When the kids and officers
meet, Ober said the hope is they
can learn to relate to one another,
with the possibility that sometime in the future, the kids might
feel comfortable coming to an officer with a problem or information.
I think that opens up the lines
of communication, Ober said.
This shows were approachable.
Ober said the desire to give
back is the reason why VTPD
Chief Louis Bordi wanted to ensure the program was free.
We want to give back, not give
back and charge you, Ober said.
Voorhees Junior Police Academy applications and related
forms can be found under the Bureau of Community Affairs section of the VTPD website at
http://vtpd.com/bureau-of-community-affairs.
Applications must be turned in
by July 1 to the Voorhees Township Police Headquarters building, 1180 White Horse Road.
Due to the limited number of
spots available, not all those who
turn in an application will be selected. Applicants must be residents of Voorhees.
Those interested with any
questions about the program can

els could be in the ground within
a year-and-a-half to two years,
with the process taking about
three years to complete.
However, Klimcsak said that
while properties near source
areas that dont have the chance
to be re-contaminated present
themselves as the first to be
cleaned up, until the remedial design process is complete, it wont
be known when specific properties will be cleaned.
During design, well see if
theres a potential for recontamination. If theres not, the property is going to be cleaned up,
Klimcsak said. Certainly, a property upstream in Gibbsboro may
be cleaned up at the same time a
property in Voorhees would be
cleaned up. The remedial design
phase will certainly shake out
some of those details.
A ROD, which is the final outline of the cleanup plan for a Superfund site, can only be issued
after a public comment period in
which the EPA accepts public
comments or concerns about any
proposed actions.
The EPA is accepting comments from members of the public regarding the residential

cleanup plan through July 2.

However, for the residents in
Voorhees concerned about the
health of Kirkwood Lake as a
whole, the EPA is still several
years away from an official ROD
that would outline what remedy
would be used for the Kirkwood
Lake
portion
of
the
Williams/Hilliards Creek Superfund site.
The proposed date for the EPA
issuing a ROD regarding Kirkwood Lake is sometime in 2018,
which was announced at a community information meeting in
January and confirmed by Klimcsak at the June 11 meeting.
As in the past, Klimcsak said
the EPA would still first be prioritizing cleanup of residential sites
most likely to affect human
health, before moving to other affected areas upstream from Kirkwood Lake to reduce the possibility of recontamination.
Those areas include the former
Sherwin-Williams manufacturing plant at Silver Lake in Gibbsboro, a Route 561 Gibbsboro dump
site, a Gibbsboro United States
Avenue burn site, areas of
Hilliards Creek and then finally
Kirkwood Lake itself.
Voorhees resident Alice Johnston, who has properties along
the lake and is president of the
Kirkwood Lake Environmental
Committee, still questioned why

likely never be able to do so. Who
wants a home with arsenic?
Dissatisfied, no not me! I was
expecting lies from the politicians, especially New Jersey
politicians.

full of life lessons
Best wishes to the new club at
Voorhees Middle School which
has set as its first goal to create a
trail from the school to the exist-

ing open space trail through the

Stafford Tract.
I have one suggestion: All costs
for this project should be paid
through donations and fundraising activities such as car washes
and hoagie sales organized by the
club. No taxpayer funding should
be used.
Just think of the great lessons
the students will learn from this.
Making a personal investment
and not depending on government and taxpayers to pay for
something you are passionate
about. Learning how to market
your idea to other investors.
Witnessing the generosity of individuals to whom you have successfully pitched your project.
Lots of life lessons here for the
taking, boys and girls.

concurrently.
Its been 35 years already. Why
cant they clean the lake and the
residential properties in concert
with cleaning the burn site and
the plant site and so and so
forth? Johnston asked. What
does everything need to be piecemealed out?
Johnston said other possible
plans to clean Kirkwood Lake
that are being discussed between
Sherwin-Williams and Camden
County officials, who control the
lake, are still ongoing.

Sherwin-Williams/
