Topic: Coin College?

Message:

Posted by: jeebs9 (Sep 25, 2014 10:11AM)

I couldn't find one haha... Can anyone point me in the direction of a book (or DVD) for coins? That basically
brings the same things like Card College.
One more question... I'm looking to do coin in a borrowed beer bottle. Where the coin is put in the bottle and
given to the Spec to show that the coin can't come out. And then the coin is magical force out of the top of the
bottle. I'll post a video if anyone wants to see what I'm talking about.
Thank You

Off the top of my head there are a number of books and/or DVDs that could be considered... I assume
Bobo's is your basis? There's a ton of material in there from basic to advanced so you really can't lose.
In as far as other material is concerned, here's a short list that is by no mean exhaustive:
-Roth's Expert Coin Magic
-Kaufman's Coin Magic
-The New York Coin Magic Seminar DVD series... those could last you a while, so much great material in
there.
-Anything by Dave Neighbors, I've heard good things about his book The David Neighbor's Project Volume
1, but haven't had a chance to pick it up for myself.
-Eric Jones' Metal series has some great stuff on the later two DVDs after the basic one.
-Rubinstein's Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights (No tricks, but lots of great moves)
-Rubinstein's Knockout Coin Magic DVD (actually three volumes in one)

-Anything by Curtis Kam.

-Anything by Kainoa Harbottle.
That's obviously a very short list and really only included all coin related material. There are plenty of others
out there that I didn't mention that would also be good places to look, like Troy Hooser's work among others.
One last question - considering Card College, are you looking for something that teaches moves and then
provides effects and routines that utilize those same moves? I'm not too sure there is anything out there
aside from Bobo's that does that for coin magic. I could be wrong though, it wouldn't be the first time.
Best of luck on your search.
-Bill

start with what you've suggested. Again thank.

Yes if anyone could PM about the direction to coin in a bottle. I think that would be really nice. I have 2 skills
right now. And it's french drop and classic palm. I have been doing the muscle pass. But haven't got it to a
place where I feel good about it.

Wow... Guys thank you for pointing me in the direction of Bobo. This is huge!
But I recently saw a video of Dynamo I think. Where he borrows a bottle and a coin. Puts it inside. And the
spec tried to take it out. But can't.. Then he take the bottle back and then removes it with one huge tap. I
could see how it's kind of done. But I'd like some sort of reading material or DVD to watch. I think it would
great for bars.
Again thank you!

Yeah, it seems everyone starts with Bobo. Roth, Neighbors, and Jones for sure started with it. Curtis Kam
and Kainoa Harbottle can reference it with such ease that I imagine it was a major part of their early learning,
as well. Don't discount it because it's hard to learn from like I did. I am just now realizing that skipping the
easier stuff and not putting in the time gets a man nowhere. I have spent three years trying to learn the latest
and greatest only to realize it's too hard for me.
On the note of learning material, Reel Magic Magazine is on demand for only $5 a month and has a course
on the basics of coin magic taught by Kainoa Harbottle. It is by no means complete yet, but is easily worth

If you want a good book go with Al Schneider on Coins.

Hey, great suggestion, Eric Caldwell. Kainoa Harbottle's Coin Magic 101 over at Reel Magic Magazine is
outstanding. Kainoa is in fact a professioanal educator (higher education), and we know his mechanics with
coin magic are just impeccable. I wish he were around when I was starting! This segment alone is a steal at
$5 a month, but this on demand subscription has soooo much more.
By the way, Doc Eason goes live tonight at 8pm EST at Reel Magic Magazine.

Thanks, Dave! I won't be at the Super Session. I'm going to do my best to be at 4F this year, I'm due since
I've missed the last few years for personal obligations. Hopefully, that should be plenty of time to save up for
the book; money is a bit tight right now.

Modern Coin Magic DVD with my buddy Ben Salinas is the best coin sleight DVD ever, and I had them all.
Best value as well as you can get it for under $20 and has a plethora of sleights and tricks. That is as close
to a "Coin College" that you will get. The others lsited are also great, but this one is my favorite of them all
and very informative for the price, and assumes you know nothing.

I would echo what Bill said. The Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights has over 100 coin moves, many still found
only in that series. The NYCMS DVD series has 17 discs, over 34 hours, and over 225 routines on all
phases of coin magic from some of the top people in coin magic., including some of the names mentioned
already. Bill Wells has called it the video Bobo for the 21st century. The book Al Schneider on Coins was my
go to book after Bobo. Then Coinmagic, then the Roth book. Kainoa has material in books, on the NYCMS
DVD series, and elsewhere as mentioned. Curtis Kam has great material in his series, all well thought out
and presented, but it's not easy. Kainoa, Curtis, Roth, and myself also have downloadable lectures from
Penguin, and my own has some new stuff and some updated handlings.

Yes, it is quite a set, a real treatise as to coin magic. Along with the famous book by Bobo, you would have
quite an extensive and well illustrated reference as to the art. :)
Welcome to coin magic, to the Caf, and to the great journey of it all. :)
