Abstract
The purpose of this report is providing the summary of students learning
experiences during 20 weeks industrial attachment with Arup Singapore Pte Ltd.
In this report, student will provide his knowledge about projects that he joined,
knowledge that he applied and software that he learned.
Finally, the report concludes with the experiences gained from the internship
period and how they are beneficial to the students future career. The industrial
attachment has provided a great chance for the undergraduate to experience the
real working life and apply the knowledge from school to real situation.

Acknowledgement
Firstly, I would like to express my deepest gratitude and appreciate to my
supervisor, Mr Ken Wong for giving me the opportunity to do an internship with
Arup Singapore Pte Ltd and provide me all the useful guidance during my IA
period.
The advices from my tutor Associate Professor Chan Pak Kwong, that helps me a
lot and I really appreciate his guidance throughout the internship.
Furthermore, I want to say thank Mr Tim for taking care of me during intern
period.
Finally, I want to thank my family for trusting and supporting me all the time.

1 Introduction
1.1 Objective of Industrial Attachment
Industrial Attachment is a compulsory programme of School of Civil and
Environmental Engineering. It is a good opportunity for student to experience the
real work life and prepare the student with practical skills and insight for future
career.
Working as a newly employed engineer, the student can develop and enhance
academic as well as personal skill such as communication, confidence and
maturity. The attachment challenges the student with many real job asignments
to tune the student into right working attitude and professionalism.
1.2 Purpose of the report
This report is the summary of 20 weeks internship attachment of student at Arup
Singapore Pte Ltd. It provides the training experience and professional
knowledge the student had acquired during attachment period.
1.3 Scope of the report
Working in the construction industry, student has the opportunity to familiarize
himself with few projects and the usage of software like GSA, Adsec to assist the
analysis.

1.4 Structure of the report

This industrial attachment report includes 4 chapters:
Chapter 1 contains the introduction and purposes of report.
Chapter 2 and 3 will discuss the activities the student had participated in.
Chapter 4 is the conclusion and the experience gained from the programme.

2 PROJECTS
2.1 National skin centre (NSC)
2.1.1 Project background

During internship period,

2.1.2

Checking drawing details

A) Procedure
As there will be renovation in the current NSC, the student had to check whether
the reinforcement details of all beams, columns, slabs are not missing. After that,
student had to create mark up of what are missing and what are not on the
general plan by using Bluebleam software.
After creating mark up, student rearranged all drawings into new categories.
B) Experience
As the task required a lot of checking, it helped student to develop patience and
meticulousness.
Moreover, student got familiar with details of reinforcement for beams, columns,
staircase, etc.

2.1.3

Calculation of wind load

As wind plays an important role in affecting the stability of the building, the
analysis of its effect is carried out.
A) Procedure
- Student used Eurocode 1 to calculate wind stress by finding internal and
-

external pressure coefficient

To determine external pressure coefficient:

+ First student found the area of loaded section (A). Compare A if A<1 m2
or 1<A<10 or A>10
+ Student used table 7.1 in Eurocode 1 to find external pressure coefficient
for vertical walls of rectangular plan buildings and 7.2 for flat roof with parapets
+ For NSC, student took into account wind from 4 directions: north, south,
west and east that affect NSC and combine the effect together.
-

To determine internal pressure coefficient:

+
+ Student found peak velocity pressure of each faces of NSC
-

The worst scenario of combination of internal and external would be

applied on the building

B) Experience
As student never learned about wind loading in university before, this task
gave him a challenge and opportunity to new knowledge which can benefit
him in future.

2.1.4

Loading plan.

Loading plan is needed to help engineer

For NSC, student created loading plan with live load using revit.
A) Procedure
- At first different areas inside the building are grouped into various
-

categories.
Design loading value is given to each category.
Calculating M&E load
Create loading plan using Revit.

A.1) How loading plan is created in Revit

-

Creating

2.1.5

Calculating load on column using Rhinoceros

and GSA
A) Procedure

In Rhinoceros, student created the outline of the NSC building based on

what is shown in general plan. And the outline was exported into GSA

file.
In GSA, student put beam and column size into the NSC model. Truss,
stump and wall were also created. After that loads including live load,
SDL are imposed into the model. Students have to make sure that all parts

of the model are well connected to each other.

Finally, the results were made from running analysis.
B) Experience
In creating the model, student learned to be careful with every step and
familiarized himself with using two software in order to finish task fast.
Upon completion of the model, student also gained the sense of
achievement

2.2 Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre

2.2.1
A)
B)

Using adsec to assist checking column capacity

Procedure
First student created the column with required reinforcement.
M/N diagram was extracted.
From M/N diagram, MM curve was extracted as well.
Experience
What student learned from using adsec is the theory behind how adsec
calculates the capacity of beam and apply it on excel sheet, which will be
elaborated on section below

2.2.2

Beam design in excel sheet and compare with

capacity created in adsec

A) Procedure
- First student understands the assumed relationship between stress and
-

strain in steel and concrete (picture )

Student understands the strain in concrete, and the compression stress
block.
+ The neutral axis will run from negative infinitive to positive infinitive
which will create different scenario of compression stress block in beam
+ The slope is the maximum between the slope that governs the yield
strain in concrete and the one governing the yield strain in steel.
+ The compression stress block used are showed in the picture below.
The compression stress block are divided into three parts so that the
calculation of axial force and moment is easily carried out.
+
The yield strain in concrete is set .

2.3 Downtown Line 3 post-construction survey

The purpose of
A) Procedure
- Places that student went to take survey are HDB, factories, substations.
- Before the survey student prepared the observation template for the
survey in Marq app, print the pre-construction survey, charge the ipad,
make sure that all the equipment including water bottle, torchlight, crack
meter, power bank are all there.

On the survey-taking day, student arrived to the target area and took
photos of rooms, toilets, walkways, cracks, staircases, settlement, paint

peeling, concrete spalling, etc.

After finishing taking photos, student prepared the post-construction

report.
B) Experience,

3 Maximo
3.1 Introduction
Maximo is the web-base product, which help the user control over all types of
assets such as production, infrastructure, and facilities.
3.2 Maximo PM
Preventive maintenance (PM) work is often repetitive work performed to keep
Safety relief valve
-

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS)

Valve

3.3 Conclusion
While updating the preventive maintenance report, the student has a chance to
understand clearly about system equipments, common failures of equipment,
frequency and procedure of preventive a

ctivities.

4 Final conclusion
During 5 months internship at Oiltanking Singapore, I have learnt immense
technical knowledge of oil and gas industry, which is very important to my future
career. Working in Oiltanking Singapore also gives me a chance to develop
communication skill and working experience, which is very hard to achieve
somewhere else.
The internship is a good time to look at and find out what is my strength and
weakness. This helps me to know which character I should improve in the next
future.
At last, the internship has gave me an insight and motivation to pursue my career
in power industry.
