Health Sciences
Professionals
Pursuing a career in Allied Health Science is becoming a choice among
students. From a lab technologist to a fully trained physiotherapist,
the opportunities are wide. Mr. Rafeeudeen Mohamed, Registrar of
MAHSA College talks about the careers in Allied Health Science.
At the moment, the most popular courses are Physiotherapy,
Pharmacy and Medical Lab Technology.
What are the career options in the field of Allied A student after SPM has the decision of choosing to enter a diploma
Health Sciences? What are the prospects?
course directly or opt to do the A levels programme or an equivalent
There are many options in the field of Allied Health Sciences. Here
at MAHSA we offer Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Medical Lab
Technology, Medical Imaging (Radiography) and Environmental
Health. Students will be fully trained to later pursue a career following
their graduation of any of the MAHSA degree or diploma programmes.
This will enable them to work in any private or government hospitals
or health institutions.
Go for it! The demand for Allied Health professionals in the health care
industry is high and rising not just locally but on an international scale.
The chances of employment are high mixed with the opportunities to
travel to various countries and undergo various working experiences.
The minimum requirements at MAHSA for any of our Diploma courses
are 3 credits in SPM including one science subject. This excludes the
Diploma in Dental Technology which requires 5 credits in SPM.

Batik Art, a medium using a wax dyeing on cloth has now been internationally acclaimed as a unique and new
type of media. It has been regarded as the National Art of Malaysia.
The origins of Batik is by no means new. In fact, it is believed to have originated from India and introduced
to China during the Tang Dynasty (618-905 AD). There is yet another claim that it originated from Java, in a
process which the Javanese used in making their colourful batik sarongs. It reached its highest form in Java,
where the craft has been a cottage industry since the 7th century. Nevertheless all these theories are yet to be
proven.
This age-old medium was introduced to the Malay Archipelago from Java and has been developed into fine art
by Malaysian artists. While Batik art is mainly used for the manufacture of apparel in Indonesia, in Malaysia it is
used for both materials and Batik paintings.
10
The technique of Batik is far from simple one. In fact, it is a long and painstaking process.
15
The first step in Batik as done by an artist is to give the cotton cloth a thorough washing in order to remove all
the starch. The cloth is then dried, ironed and stretched taut on a wooden frame.
The second step is to make a rough charcoal sketch as a guide for the painting. The design develops later with
each waxing.
The third process is the application of the wax, which is used only as a protective agent in the dyeing process.
The wax (usually a mixture of paraffin, resin and yellow beeswax) is melted and handled by means of the
Tjanting, a brass pen-shaped like small cup with single or double spout. The artist paints with the pen in a
negative way by covering up places where he does not want the colour to appear. The process is exacting and
tedious and does not allow for errors, only, artistic mistakes.
15
20
Like the lithographer, the Batik artist must repeat the process of the first step after each colouring. Only this time
the artist will wash the waxed piece in boiling water.
The cycle of wax removing and wax covering for additional colours will continue until the artist considers his
work completed.
30
10
The fourth stage is to apply colours or dyes to the painting. These can be painted on with a brush or, in the case
of very large areas, the cloth can be removed from the frame and dipped or immersed in a basin of dye.
25
11
The final stage is the removal of wax residue and the fixing of colours, dipping the cloth into boiling water to
which a small amount of detergent is added and then rinsing the cloth in cold water. The finished painting is then
dipped in a diluted solution of sulphuric acid to fix the colours permanently.
12
The most noticeable feature of batik painting is the crackle, line and dots. Batik painting can be framed or
scrolled.

Be a Winning Lawyer
One needs to be disciplined, have the passion and good English language
skills. These are attributes which you would require if you are thinking of
a legal career. Besides taking up law studies provides many openings
to one.Times Guides spoke to Mr Jothi Ram, the Academic Director of
Brickfields Asia College for an insight into the profession.
What are the career options in the field of
Law?
There are many. When they become qualified persons, as we term it,
they can either set up their own practice or work in a law firm.
Some might not like the idea of going to court. So they can instead,
opt to be employed in organisations as Legal Advisors, Human
Resources Managers, and in managerial positions in multinational
corporations.
With a law degree, some of them even take up the Institute of
Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) qualifications and
become Company Secretaries or heads of corporate divisions in
companies.
A basic first degree has six core subjects and six optional subjects.
The six cores include Law of Contract, Law of Torts, Constitutional
Law, Criminal Law, Land Law and Laws of Trusts. These are the vital
for one to know the operations of law. Six others are optional.
Usually, a student needs to get the first degree, and then move on to
take up post graduate studies.
However, the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) is a Bar Exams
to enter the profession. Most countries distinguish an academic
qualification which is a general degree with a qualification to go into
practice.

Model Answer
Choose a character that fits your definition of unkind. Describe the character briefly.
Describe the actions of the character you think is unkind.
Say why you think the character is unkind.
Refer to the information in the novel.
Explain what lesson you learn from this incident
The Pearl
One of the incidents in The Pearl by John Steinback which I considered unkind is the
doctors action of turning away the sick Coyotito. Of all the characters, the one that I dislike most is
the doctor due to his unethical behaviour.
When Coyotito was stung by the scorpion, his parents took him to the doctor but the doctor
refused to give the treatment to him. He only treats those who can afford and demands to see the
money before he treats anyone. He is greedy and discontent. I feel that both his relative wealth and
weight come from his continuous oppression of the people.
He even thinks of the Indians as animals. Referring to Kinos request for the treatment, he
says, Im a doctor, not a veterinary. His attitude is the opposite of good doctors who are supposed
to treat everybody equally. However, when he discovers that Kino own the great pearl, he smugly
announces to the villagers that Kino is one of the patients.
Another incident that shows the cruelty of the doctor is when he finds out that the baby is
getting better and his service is no longer needed, he gives the baby a white powder which later
turns out to be poison.
From my point of view, I feel that the doctors actions are bad and immoral. He is the
embodiment of evil and corruption in the society.

2. Yeast cells can either respire aerobically (when oxygen is present), or anaerobically (in the absence of oxygen) to produce
energy for their life processes. In the absence of oxygen, yeast undergoes anaerobic respiration. Glucose is partially broken
down to release carbon dioxide, ethanol, and heat energy. This anaerobic respiration of yeast is also called fermentation.
Plan a laboratory experiment to investigate the process of anaerobic respiration in yeast.
Your experiment planning need to include the following aspects:

A sharp pin pierces the skin, causing the sensory receptors in the skin to generate nerve impulses.
The nerve impulses are transmitted along an afferent neurone toward the spinal cord.
In the spinal cord, the nerve impulses are transmitted from the afferent neurone to an interneurone.
From the interneurone, the nerve impulses are transmitted to an efferent neurone.
The efferent neurone carries the nerve impulses from the spinal cord to the effector (biceps muscle)
so that the pin can be pulled out from the skin immediately.

The pioneer species of a mangrove swamp are the Sonneratia sp. and Avicennia sp.
As the time passes, the soil becomes more compact and firm. This conditions favours the growth
of the Rhizophora sp. The root system of the Rhizophora sp. and Bruguiera sp. traps silt and mud,
creating a firmer soil structure over time
As more sediments are deposited, the shore extends futher to the sea. Over time, terrestrial plants
like nipah palm begins to replace the Bruguiera sp.
The gradual transition and succession from a mangrove swamp to a terrestrial forest and eventually
to a tropical rainforest, which is a climax community, takes a long time.

The body needs a balanced diet which contains carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, mineral salts,
fibres and water in the correct proportion.
A balanced diet sustains the body and maintains health and for growth and repair.
Malnutrition is caused by an insufficient intake o one or more nutrients in our diet.
Malnutrition may be caused by eating too little, or overeating of certain types of food, which does not
supply a balanced diet.

The meat-based fast food is not suitable for a teenager when consumed frequently for a long period
because it contains excessive amount of salts, fats, proteins and food additives.
A balanced diet should contain seven classes of food in the correct proportions according to the age,
sex and the level of activities.
Excess fats caused the cholesterol content in the blood to rise. This increase is likely to cause the
cholesterol to be deposited in the arteries. This can lead to cardiovascular diseases.
Excess mineral salts increase the blood osmotic pressure. It can also lead to the formation of kidney
stones.
Excess proteins can increase the uric acids content of the blood and lead to gout and kidney failure.
Food flavorings and colorings contain harmful chemicals that can cause cancer.
Insufficient fibre can lead to constipation and haemorrhoids.

7 (a) Distilled water is hypotonic to the cytoplasm of the red blood cells and the cell sap of the onion cells.
During osmosis there is a net flow of water from the surroundings into the cell.
The red blood cells will swell and eventually burst.
The vacuoles in the onion cells expands and the plant cells become turgid.
However, the cell wall prevents the onion cells from bursting because it is tough and rigid.
Vegetables which are soaked too long in a salt solution will become soft because the salt solution is
hypertonic to the cytoplasm of the vegetable cells.
Water flows out of the cells, causing the cytoplasm and the vacuoles to shrink.
The plasma membranes pull away from the cell walls.
In this condition, the cells are said to be plasmolysed.
To make the vegetables crisp again, Puan Mashita can soak the drooped vegetables in water.
SECTION C
8 (a)
Osmoregulation is the process of regulating the blood osmotic pressure by regulating the water
content and the concentration of salts in the body.
The normal blood glucose concentration in humans is about 90 mg of glucose in 100 cm3 of blood.
This level of glucose is regulated by the negative feedback mechanism controlled by hormones.
Two organs are involved :
(i) Pancreas secretes the insulin directly into the blood.
(ii) Liver is the main target organ of insulin and glucagon.
Insulin converts the excessglucose in the blood to glycogen. The conversion of glucose to glycogen
lowers the blood glucose concentration to its optimum level.
In liver cells, the excess glucose in the blood will be converted to lipids.
Glucagon converts the stored glycogen in the liver to glucose.
The glucose then diffuse out of the liver cells into the blood.
Glucagon also increases the conversion of glucose from amino acids in the liver cells.
This increase the blood glucose concentration to its optimum level.
Tropic response or tropism is controlled by auxins. Auxins are produced in the root tip in the cell
division zone.
Response of root tip towards light:
i. When a root tip is exposed to light from one direction, the concentration of auxins is higher in the
shaded region.
ii. The high concentration of auxins in the shaded region of the root tip inhibits cell elongation.
iii. Cells in shaded region grow slower than cells in region exposed to light.
iv. Hence, the root bends away from the light showing negative phototropism.

TINGKATAN 5
TAHUN 2008

Soalan
Butiran
BAHAGIAN A
Aspek kelemahan calon.
1. Calon menjawab melebihi 300 patah perkataan menyebabkan calon menjawab melebihi masa yang diperuntukkan
iaitu 45 minit.
langkah, tetapi calon mengemukakan punca.
Aspek yang perlu diberi perhatian oleh calon.
1. Calon perlu menjawab mengikut arahan soalan. Sekiranya arahan memerlukan calon mengemukakan faktor, calon
perlu menulis faktor sahaja sebagai isi
3. Calon kemukakan terlalu banyak isi tetapi hanya dihuraikan secara umum tanpa diolah.
4. Calon menjawab soalan yang memerlukan pengetahuan yang luas sedangkan pengetahuan calon agak terhad.
Contohnya soalan berkenaan penyakit berbahaya calon Cuma tahu berkenaan satu atau dua jenis penyakit sahaja.

3. Teknik menjawab salah. Contoh, soalan mengkehendaki calon mengemukan watak, tetapi calon menjawab dalam
bentuk nilai murni iaitu sepatutnya wataknya seorang yang penyayang tetapi calon menjawab watak sayangmenyayangi.

Element X reacts with element Z to produce a compound with formation of ionic bond.
The electronic configuration of atom X is 2.1 and the electronic configuration of atom Z is 2.8.7. To attain the stable
duplet electron arrangement, atom X donates one electron to form a positive ion.
X X+ + eAtom Z will receive an electron to form Z- ion and attains the stable octet electron arrangement with 8 electrons in the
valence electron shell.
Z + e- ZThe X+ ion and Z- ion will attract each other with a strong electrostatic force and form an ionic compound with the
formula XZ.
(c)
Element Y reacts with element Z to form a compound with formation of covalent bond.
To attain the stable octet electron arrangement with 8 electrons in the valence electron shell, atom Y shares electrons
with atom Z. One atom Y contributes 4 electrons and four atom Z contribute one electron each. Atom Y shares 4 pairs
of electrons with four atom Z to form a covalent compound with the formula YZ.
(d)
Compound XZ has a higher melting point than compound YZ. In compound XZ, the electrostatic force of attraction
between oppositely charged ions is very strong and a lot of heat energy is required to overcome it. In compound YZ,
the intermolecular force of attraction between molecules is weak and a little heat energy is required to overcome it.
9. (a)
For those purposes, the chef can use flavouring agents, preservatives, antioxidants and colouring agents.
Flavoring agents are added to food to make it taste better. The agents are of two types: artificial flavours and flavour
enhancers.
Artificial flavours include sweeteners and others such as peppermint or vanilla. Examples are aspartame and saccharin.
These two are actually substitutes for sugar to enhance the sweetness of food.
Flavour enhancers are chemicals added to food to bring out the flavours or to enhance the taste, for example,
monosodium glutamate (MSG).
Preservatives and antioxidants protect food from being spoiled by bacterial and fungal attack, and atmospheric
oxidation, respectively.
Preservatives, for example sodium nitrite, benzoic acid and sodium benzoate, retard or prevent growth of
microorganisms so that food can be kept longer.
Examples of antioxidants include sulphur dioxide and sodium sulphite. They are added to food to prevent oxidation of
fats and oils by oxygen in air.
Colouring agents are synthetic dyes used to restore the colour of food lost during processing and enhance natural
colours to increase attractiveness. Examples are azo and triphenyl compounds.
(b)
Soap molecules contain hydrophilic and fat insoluble heads and hydrophobic hydrocarbon tails.
When soap is used on oily wetted hands, the negatively charged heads of soap ions dissolve in water, whereas, the
hydrocarbon tails dissolve in the layer of oil. During washing, the oily dirt is lifted and washed away from the hands.
Soap also can emulsify the oily dirt by breaking large drops of oil into smaller droplets.
If the hands are dipped in water, the oily droplets repel one another because they carry the same charge. As a result, the
oil is suspended.
During washing, the droplets will be carried away.

10. (a)
The electronic configuration for Diagram 7.1 is 2.8.7. The element is chlorine.
(i)
(ii)
(b)
The distance between the nucleus and the valence electrons of atom in Diagram 7.2 is greater than that in Diagram 7.1
as the atom in Diagram 7.1 has 3 electron shells but the atom in Diagram 7.2 has 4 electron shells. Because of this, the
attractive forces between the nucleus and the valence electrons become weaker in Diagram 7.2 compared to the atom in
Diagram 7.1.
As a result, the atom in Diagram 7.1 has a stronger attraction towards electrons compared to the atom in Diagram 7.2.
The atom in Diagram 7.1 is more electronegative, therefore, it is more reactive compared to the atom in Diagram 7.2.
(c)
The element in Diagram 7.2 reacts more actively with sodium hydroxide compared to the black coloured solid.
(d) (i)
(ii)
1. Concentrated acid is corrosive and the experiment must be conducted in a fume chamber.
2. Make sure that the apparatus are connected tightly to prevent leakage of chlorine gas, which is poisonous.
Part G
Chlorine gas will react with iron wool to produce iron (III) chloride solid.
2Fe + 3Cl2 2FeCl2
Part H
The excessive chlorine gas will flow into sodium hydroxide solution to produce sodium chloride,
sodium chlorate and water.

Accounting
is much
sought after
Despite the perception that accounting is dull, many may not be aware
of the wide job scopes available until after they graduate. Times Guides
spoke to Madam Lee Mee Chu, Senior Lecturer from Segi College and she
gives her take on where an accounting degree can lead one to.
What are the career options in the field of
accountancy?
The entry route varies with entry qualification. Students who have
completed their SPM will need to either take up a foundation programme
or a diploma programme in business or accountancy before enrolling
for a degree in or professional accountancy programme. Upon the
completion of an undergraduate programme, students can continue
with the postgraduate programme either in business or accountancy.

Hone Your
Artistic
The multimedia industry offers various challenges for one
who intends to cultivate his or her creative flair. Times Guides
spoke to Associate Professor Harold Thwaites, who is the
Dean of the Faculty of Creative Multimedia, Multimedia
University, on what it takes to be part of it.
What qualities do students
need to succeed in the field of
Creative Multimedia?
Firstly, one needs to develop the willingness
and interest to learn about the field. Secondly,
one should be able to think creatively and
innovatively. These are critical in content
creation. Thirdly, they would require specific
skills such as 3D modelling, animation, web
designing, authoring, photography, video, and
basic programming.

Propel yourself
into the World
of IT
Gone are the days when one was considered a geek, if one was from the IT industry. In fact, IT has become a desired alternative for many. Times Guides spoke to
Mr. Gurpardeep Singh, who is the Director of Operations from APIIT Malaysia, for
an insight into what the industry holds for local graduates.
What are the popular career options in the
field of IT?
The commonest include:
Software development, encompassing programming, systems design
and development, and software project management.
Infrastructure management, including systems administration,
network design and management and database administration
Web and interactive (multimedia) development
Mobile Computing - mobile systems development and mobile
architectures
Enterprise computing applications which are closely aligned to
business processes and using ERP tools such as SAP.
Other thoughts?
There are tremendous opportunities in the Malaysian IT industry,
which is expected to generate at least 100,000 jobs in the next few
years. However, students must ensure that they choose programmes
which not only emphasise on academic development, but also those
which require them to carry out industry-type projects. This will enable
them to develop strong professional skills.
In addition, as technology evolves very rapidly, students must develop
the ability to learn how to learn new skills, and to not be dependent
purely on technologies covered during their programme of study. This
will ensure that they succeed not only in their first jobs, but also in
securing a long-term career in the global IT industry.

Air enters the tracheae through the spiracles and travels through the tracheoles to the fluid-filled tips.
Oxygen in the fluid diffuses directly from the tracheoles into the cells, and carbon dioxide diffuses out
from the cells into the tracheoles.

When an insect inhales, the abdominal muscles relax and P open. The increased air pressure forces
air out through P.
The tracheal tubes carry oxygen from the air directly to body cells.

The movement of the forelimb is brought about by the contraction and relaxation of a pair of
antagonistic muscles A and B.
The arm is flexed by the contraction of the B muscle. The C muscle relax as the B muscle contract
causing the arm bent. The B muscle become thicker and shorter. Contraction of the B muscle pulls the
ulna up thus bending the arm at the elbow joint.
To straighten the arm, the C muscle contract while the B muscle relax. Contraction of the C muscle
pulls the ulna down and the arm is straighten.

8 Marks
(b)
Eating habits refer to what a person eats, the frequency a person eats and the amount a person eats
automatically without thinking and without control.
2 Marks
(c)
