NKK Corp. has completed
construction of the 22,500m3
LNG carrier, Surya Satsuma
(HN: 192), for Mitsui OSK
Lines, Ltd. and Nusantara
Shipping, Ltd. at its Tsu

the fourth built by NKK employing the GTT Mark III
(membrane) cargo containment system. Mitsui OSK
Lines has so far operated
spherical tank type LNG carriers. The Surya Satsuma is the first
membrane type LNG carrier for the
company.
The Surya Satsuma is now engaging in LNG transportation from In-

MES delivers multipurpose LPG

carrier to Maersk Company
Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) has
delivered at its Chiba Works the 20,500m3 type multipurpose LPG carrier, Maersk Holyhead (HN: 1453), to its
owner, The Maersk Company Limited, following its sister
ship, Maersk Humber, delivered to the same owner in 1998.
The vessel with four (4) sets of twin cylindrical tanks,
so called bi-lobe tank design, has a cargo capacity of
20,500m3 and is ranked among the worlds largest for this
type.
The cargo tanks and cargo systems are so designed as
to load twelve (12) kinds of liquefied gases and chemicals
including LPG and ammonia. Cargo-handling equipment
can cope with a variety of cargoes, and reliquefaction equipment is installed on board the ship to treat gas evaporated
from cargo liquid.
The cylindrical cargo tanks are made of TMCP hightension steel developed by MES in collaboration with a
steel mill to satisfy severe requirements for low temperature and stress corrosion cracking to accommodate LPG
and ammonia.
Two additional cylindrical tanks with a capacity of 110m3
are installed on
the upper deck to
cope with transport of a small
quantity of cargoes, which improves cargoloading efficiency.
The wheelhouse is so ar-

on the same route since 1996,

the former has 18% more
cargo tank capacity.
At present, five LNG carriers with a cargo tank capacity of 18,800m3 - 22,500m3 are
operated on the routes between S.E. Asia and mediumsize cities in Japan. Four of
these carriers are membrane
types constructed by NKK.
