2010 Red Flannel Festival

Red Flannel Festival names Fred and Carollee Gunnell 2010 grand marshals
CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich., Feb. 6, 2010
– The Red Flannel Festival Board of Di-
rectors proudly named Cedar Springs
residents Fred and Carollee Gunnell as the
2010 Grand Marshal for the 71st Annual
Celebration, to be held on Saturday, Octo-
ber 2, 2010.
“The Festival is extremely proud and
thankful for the many years of outstanding
dedication of both Fred and Carollee to the
entire Cedar Springs community,” said Mi-
chele Tracy Andres, President of the Fes-
tival. “Their fabulous community service
in several organizations, and their strong
support of the Festival are very impressive
and just what we look for in a Red Flannel
Grand Marshal. It’s very obvious Fred and
Carollee love Cedar Springs and the Red
Flannel Festival!”
Fred has been a prominent leader in
the community, volunteering his time to
several organizations on the Board of Di-
rectors, including the Cedar Springs Ro-
tary, Historical Society, Rod & Gun Club
and United Methodist Church. He is also
a member of the Solon Township Board of
Trustees, and serves on the Solon Township
Planning Commission. Carollee is very ac-
tive in the United Methodist Church Choir
and served on the Cedar Springs Historical
Society Board of Directors and also on the
Solon Township Board of Review. She also
is a caregiver for the elderly.
Both Fred and Carollee attended Ce-
dar Springs High School, and went on to
complete their education at Michigan State
University. Fred was the Director of Ad-
mission for Michigan Technological Uni-
versity in Houghton; and Carollee was an
elementary school teacher for many years
in Hancock, Michigan.

In 1936, a New York writer bemoaned
that, “…we are in the midst of an old- fash-
ioned winter and there are no red flan-
nels in the USA ...”An editorial in The
Cedar Springs Clipper announced town
merchants had red flannels. When it was
picked up by The Associated Press, orders
came in from all over the country! Because
of the famous “drop-seaters” and the ar-
ea’s lumbering history, a “RED FLANNEL
DAY” was planned for the fall of 1939. Vol-
unteers continue to keep the Red Flannel
Festival tradition alive and it continues to
be an annual fall event for 69 years, always
held the first Saturday in October. This
year’s festival will be held the last weekend
in September and the first weekend in Oc-
tober, with Red Flannel Day on Oct.2.

Martha ‘Ruth’ Boone
Martha “Ruth” Boone, 92, died on Fri-
day, January 29, 2010, at Laurel of Carson
in Carson City, Michigan. Ruth was born on
July 16, 1917 to James and Mary Sickelsteel in
Howard City, Michigan. Her parents owned
a store on Main Street in Howard City called
“Mary’s Lunch and Card Room”. Ruth had
one brother, Stanley, who owned a Gulf Gas
Station just south of Howard City. Ruth mar-
ried Frank “Nick” Boone in 1935. They were
married for 60 years until his death in 1996
from complications of heart surgery. They
lived on a dairy farm east of Howard City.
Besides working hard on the farm, Nick and
Ruth enjoyed socializing with friends, travel-
ing all over the United States, were involved
in many organizations, and life members of
Eastern Stars, Chapter OES #128, and White
Shrine of Greenville, Howard City Action Cen-
ter and were members of United Methodist
Church of Howard City. Ruth graduated from
Montcalm Community College in 1969 as an
LPN. She worked for 20 years at Kelsey Me-
morial Hospital Extended Care Facility. Over
the next 20 years, after being married, Frank
and Ruth fostered and adopted several chil-
dren. Four of these were fostered (sponsored
money) in Korea, Italy, Greece, and here in the
state. They adopted four other children. Sandy
was from Michigan, and now lives in Texas.
Diane was from Greece, lived in Oklahoma,
and died June 25, 1995. Douglas was adopted
from Seoul, Korea, and lives in Greenville, and
Christine of Carson City was adopted from
Pusan, Korea. Adoption took place through
the World Vision International Organization.
Ruth is survived by her children, Douglas
Boone of Greenville, Sandra Car of Dallas, TX,
and Christine (Phillip) Henney of Carson City.
Several Grandchildren, Melissa Barber of Tex-
as, Rachel Ziengenfuss of Oklahoma, Carrisa
Boone (Blanchard) of Monroe, Daniel Hen-
ney of Los Angeles and Seoul, Korea, Douglas
Boone of Greenville, in the Army in Germany,
Darren Boone of Greenville, Nickolas Holland
of Indiana, and several great grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents,
husband Frank (Nick), daughter, brother
Stanley Sickelsteel, Diane Ziengenfuss, and
grandchild Franklin Barber. Private family/
friend services will be held at a later date. In
lieu of flowers, memorials to the Haiti Relief
Fund or charity of choice may be sent to the
Heckman Funeral Home of Howard City, to
whom the arrangements were entrusted.
Barbara J. Moon
Barbara J. Moon 80 of Pierson went to be
with her Lord and Saviour on Thursday, Feb-
ruary 4, 2010 at her home. Mrs. Moon was
born October 10, 1929 in Grand Rapids, MI
the daughter of Harry and Clarabelle (Meade)
Dewey. She loved to cook, fish, camp and en-
joyed her grandkids and great grandkids. She
loved to nurse young orphaned birds and re-
lease them back to nature. She was known to
be Annie Oakley and kept a loaded .22 in the
kitchen which was needed to keep the squir-
rels and raccoons out of her bird feeder. She
was a member of the Church of the Full Gospel
in Sand Lake and very involved in church ac-
tivities. She enjoyed cooking at their camp, in
the J.O.Y. Club and in Vacation Bible School.
Surviving are her husband, Edwin whom she
married on July 1, 1950; 3 daughters, Kathleen
Moon, Janet King, Mary Ellen Fish; 3 grand-
children, Terri Troupe, Ryan (Amanda) King,
Justin King; 3 great grandchildren, Jacque-
line, Kesslie and Nathon Troupe; 1 brother,
Richard (Hazel) Annis; 1 brother-in-law, John
(Valita) Moon; many nieces and nephews. She
was preceded in death by her parents, 1 sister,
Doris Hardy; 1 brother, Nile Potter; 2 sons-in-
law, Duane Fish and Charles “Cal” King who
are waiting for her with open arms for her

Select members of the Newaygo High
School Band participated in the District
VII MSBOA Solo and Ensemble Festival
on Saturday, January 30, 2009, at Grant
Middle School. NHS Band Members in-
cluded Megan Garvin, Carlee Iwema, Ty-
ler Franks, Steven Hoffman, Tailor Mast,
Alexis Townsend, Tabitha Williams,
Brandon Maly, Emily Shue, and Ryn Pur-
cell. The students are to be commended
on their dedication in preparing for the
Festival and on their excellent perfor-
mances throughout the day.
Solo and Ensemble Festival is an op-
portunity for students to perform a selec-
tion of their choice for review. Each stu-
dent is evaluated by one judge and rated
on a scale of I to V, with I being the high-
est rating possible. Students that earn a
Division “I” (Superior) rating qualify for
State Solo and Ensemble Festival which
is held in March. Students that earned a
rating of “I” (Superior) or “II” (Excellent)
earn medals.
Congratulations to all students for
earning medals, and to Megan Garvin,
Carlee Iwema, Steven Hoffman, and Tailor
Mast on receiving a Division “I” for their
solo performances and Megan Garvin and
Tabitha Williams, Tyler Franks and Bran-
don Maly, and Steven Hoffman and Car-

duet performances. These students will
proceed to State Festival in March.

The State of Michigan has experienced the largest downturn

of the economy since the 1940s. The large number of citizens
unemployed and reduced spending by most, has decreased the
revenues the State of Michigan uses to provide services including
education. This year the State of Michigan had to reduce
the amount of money schools receive for each student (the
foundation allowance) by $165. This combined with a reduction
in the number of students attending Tri County Schools of 66
students and increased expenses results in a budget this year
that uses approximately $1.8 million from the Fund Equity. The
district has not had to reduce staff this school year because of
our ability to use the Fund Equity. For next school year we are
being told that the State will reduce the foundation allowance by
$268 per student in addition to the current year $165 per student
reduction for a total of $433 less per student than we received in
the 2008-2009 school year. We also anticipate 60 students leaving
our district next year due to the difficult economic times families

Seventh graders, Austin Martinez and Brenden Armstrong,
were the first to receive 100 percent on the top ten power standards
for mathematics. Every two weeks, students are assessed on
their progress over the concepts of the Pythagorean Theorem,
measures of central tendency, greatest common factor, evaluating
expressions involving the distributive property, probability,
operations with integers, multi-step equations, graphing a line
using slope intercept form, solving proportions and adding and
subtracting unlike fractions. Way to go, guys!!
Last year’s mobile food pantry was a success.
Help is needed again on February 26.

TC Cares is once again planning to sponsor a mobile food

pantry for those in need in our community. The truck will arrive
at MacNaughton Elementary at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 26.
We could use help in this effort. Donations are being accepted by
Gwen Mathis at MacNaughton (if sending checks make payable
to Gifts and More please). We will also need volunteers to help
work to unload the truck, sort food, fill boxes, distribute/gather
information sheets, carrying boxes…etc. If you can help we will
greatly appreciate it.

It has been 5 weeks since we began our weight loss journey. The first two weeks, no

problem! We both did just about everything right (other than an exercise regimen fully in
place). But, boy, these last 3 weeks have been much tougher!
After the first two weeks we really lost the momentum by allowing ourselves to have “a
cheat weekend”. In order to really make life changes you can’t have a “cheat weekend”.
The problem for us both was the cheat weekend turned into a cheat week, and so on and so News Shopper

Meet Tiana - An adorable little

beagle mix who’s looking for a
new home! She’s just one of the
many dogs and cats available for
adoption at the Montcalm County
Animal Shelter. Tiana was picked
up as a stray in Fairplain Township
on February 5th, and unless her
owners come to claim her, she’ll be
available for adoption starting February 12th. This doggy is
about a year old, with black & brown fur, and she’s good
around kids and other dogs too. Tiana is started on all her
vaccinations except rabies, but will need a booster shot after
she is adopted out. Her shelter ID# is 10/02/13.

There is a $40 adoption fee for dogs, $20 for cats, as well as a
refundable spay/neuter deposit ($50 for dogs, $25 for cats) unless
