APRIL'S SHOWERS

Dear Family,

I ever tired!" I saw that he was feeling the same. He said, "Yes, I
am too...do you realize that we have been gone sinco 8 this morning
and it's now 10:30? It was the "homecoming" Sunday at Meadowbrook

with a fellowship dinner, afternoon rally, and right through to night

service. But oh, was it ever great! The church praised God in song
and message all day long. There was one baptism..and another one to
day, making twelve this year.

To God be the glory.

At Sun Mt planting time has begun and this year we hope to have a lot
more food in the ground. Bananas have begun to come in - green ones
boiled make a solid base for dinner. And the buildings keep going up.
The engine room is almost complete which promises light for carp this
summer.

The 5th Annual Youth Retreat for Meadowbrook was another nice success.

It was an overnight at Sun Mt for the first time and the boys truly
enjoyed "christening" Largo House. After a nice breakfast we settled
down to a whole day of prayers, songs, messages and testimonies. It
was heartwarming for the 23 teenagers-one car got lost on the way.

Picks and shovels should be flying this month at Sun Mt as we begin a

much needed water tank. Our builder promised that if we can provide
$800.00 he will build it in three weeks. Water is our one last pro

summer. It we don't complete the camp house in time it will not be
too serious but we must have water.

With God all things are possible-

even water tanks!

And now we want to thank you for your loving gifts for our work...for

the camp house gifts, for the regular funds that feed and care for our
boys and for our Living Link churches.

Your gifts are needed more than

ever before...and appreciated so very much.

Thanke,

Your letters of encour

care for our whole family. There is always so much to tell you that
we can never find space. Please keep us in your prayers.

SUN AND- FDN--<M?OE-SONTOTNTAI^

Right up on top of the whole world is Sun Mountain. It's green peaks just 4)eg'old
old man sun. Just a few. Like underneath those big floppy banana aeaves that grow in
sun to shine down his glory on them. And its not many places, that, .can hide from

Wa^e^s valley. Wayne's valley is a little place tucked between two lovely green peaks.
U4 ^hands

You canor just
see him
there lots
of times
on his
kneesenjoys

cleaning

the coffee
plants.
The

banan^ grow close together and its cool there and a nice place to take a little rest.

Especially when Mom comes down, there with a tray of cold sweet drink and maybe some sweet
biscuits.

But oh there is so much more to tell you about Sun Mountain. It's really going to be a
camp for lots of boys and girls sometime and right now its a camp for not so many. That's
because V2 are building and it takes time-and money to build. But Sun Mountain is still

a camp with a lot of excitement going on.

Now, about animals. There are three cows. There is Shalimar and her daughter Norma who
is a darling calf. Then thereiis Julie...and want to know what? She is going to have a
baby calf very soon now. Oh, the boys love to see the new baby calves, don't you? And
then there are some goats. Momma goat is called Midni^t for she is black and was born

in the night. Her little girl is called Jeanie and she is really a darling. Jesinie leaps
all over the place when the boys come 'round. Up on the hillside is a pig pen and oh
de^l there are so many pigs! Jack is the daddy and Jill is the Mommy of 4 lovely fat
children. Miss Muffet has ten children, all girls except one eind those little pigs are
cute as can be# They afe fat sind tiny enou^ to wriggle throu^ the iron gate and run
out into the sunshine sind look for roots to dig.

So when the boys go to Sun Mountain they just dash in every direction to see all of
their friends and to check the berry bushes and bsinana trees and orange trees and sour
pliim trees. Five minutes after the car stops on arrival you can't find a boy anywhere!
In a little while they come back bringing a few treasures.
When there is time for a long walk the boys go down the far hillside to the cow pasture.
On the way they pass more banana plants that sing out a very important wco'ning. It's sm
earth crevis...a wide deep dark cavern in the mountain side that is very dangerous.
Every boy knows that you must stay on the path and walk very slowly and carefully past
there. When you get to the big rock it's all right to stop and look and that's what you
always want to do. If you call out your voice will sound very hollow as it makes it's
way down down down into the damp earth. Then suddenly you get scared and decide to hurry
away on past the bananas eind the jungle like greens...on into the sunshine again where
you can skip through the cow pasture and climb the steep hill on the far side.

But the hills have been there for all of God's wonderful time and our little boys are
only new to them. Yet there is something new at Sun Mountain and that's the camp build
ings that are going up one by one. There's the old iron dinner bell ringing and that
means Mom's got a country dinner ready for hungry boys. It's in the new dining hall
that's big enough for lots more boys than our family has. And girls too. Right across
from there is the new class room building for Bible classes and hand crafts. It has a
pretty roof that rain sounds nice on. On the other side of the big dining hall is Largo
House. It is a lovely dormitory where twenty boys can sleep. Easter time was the first
time the boys slept there and they loved it. From one side you can see far away lights
from the city at night and from the other sides you can watch green lizards rim up and
down tree trunks in the days.

It just always seems that just when you are enjoying that late afternoon ball game on
the play field it's time to go home. Sim Mountain's sun is slipping away, the animals
are quiet, the car is loaded and that means home. Summer will put an end to that for
we can stay for day after day after day. And we can hope that you will come and enjoy
Sun Mountain with us.

THE PLACE OF LOVE

Among the most quoted texts of the Bible
are the verses from Paul's letter to the Cor

inthians (I Cor. 13). Paul, in them, defines

love. Christian love.

The language is simple, yet noble.

The lessons are clear, yet profound.
The place of love over all, is unequivocally
declared.

In this text, Paul offers his support to the

Master's second Great Commandment. And

it is here, on this Commandment from Christ,

the preaching of His apostle Paul, that our
Boys' Home is founded.

The other day, we were quoting our Cor

inthian from memory, while looking through
some recent "action" pictures of our httle
guys, and the thought struck us: Why not,
in an Evangel issue, "suffer" our Httle ones to
bring home to us, and to our friends and
readers, this text?
And so we do now.

CWe have used the King James version in

which"love" is given as "charity", a translation
which scans like a great orchestra over the
structure and rhythms of this most noble

of passages.)

ALFRED E. FOSTER

The Jamaica Christian Boys'

Home extends its deepest
regrets and sympathy to Mrs.
Ned Foster, wife of the late

Alfred E. Foster who recently

passed away. The Fosters have
been supporters of the Home
since 1958 and the boys
dormitory known as Foster
Hall was given mainly through
their gifts. Other helpful
equipment and support of the
children in early years of the
Home greatly assisted our
growth.

We are deeply saddened with

his passing.

your way.

Line up is after a good breakfast. It's after

one gets buttoned and polished too, and after
one's school bag is assembled. Line-up means
inspection with a smile that says well-done
and a frown if you're caught with a lizard
in your pocket. It also means prayers and
Scripture learning right down to Danny who

personality is just as flashy as his smile and

the yard breaks up the "Line-Up" and feet
scamper and skip through the nearest door
while shrill chattering voices gradually
disappear leaving the house in silence . .. that
is, except for the long smiling sigh from
Nursie who by this time has "had it."
NOW IT'S SCHOOL

The high-schoolers were long gone by LineUp time. They have a tough pull on foot and
their Line-Up comes at school before eight
a.m. The middlers are Oxford Prep guys and
they have reason to smile. Yes, it's because of
the pleasant teachers, solid and interesting
curriculum, and good friends that Oxford
Prep provides. Danny our tiny guy, is at
Oxford's Nursery-Kindergarten where his
name on the Birthday Cake Chart says he will
be for another year.
AND AFTER SCHOOL

Before you know it, the bell rings again and

there is a mad dash to the new little tent that

good friends brought at Christmas. And some

times there are treats 'neath the tent. Our

biscuit company sees that the boys get freshly

baked broken cookies regularly. Look and see
if you think they like them. Life after all,
isn't so bad at Oxford Road. You find plenty
of things to say thank-you for at bedtime
prayers.

The humanitarian principle of rendering assistance to the less for
tunate, we believe, is a highly commendable one and we heartily applaud

the many organizations in Jamaica which carry out such projects. We,
ourselves, encourage members of our group of companies to involve them
selves in assisting these organizations in any way they can and our

companies contribute financially from time to time to many worthwhile

projects and fund-raising schemes which are carried out by these
organizations.

We believe that a philosophy of life which admits of the inter

dependence of people and the need to meaningfully contribute to each

other, can only benefit the society as a whole.

ABOUT SUN MOUNTAIN

AND JULY, 1976

Dear Christian Friends,

There is no way that you can really imagine our joy and excitement this month.

After these past three years of Saturday labor, of hard work, testing of faith
blessings of gifts, and even some tears, we are ready to open our first '"sleepin" camps at Sun Mountain.
The boys have finally been able to see what they were doing.

For kids it is

hard to see ahead and realize the goals that big people set. For a time it
was only endless work. But now the joys of Sun Mountain are being realized.

Oh, it is beautifull The two new dormitories are completed and painted and beds
are all in. The dining hall is spick and span and the kitchen nicely stocked
with camp food. Before this final week is over the finishing touches should be
on and roofs all on and the lights glowing from the light plant.
But the Spiritual part is always the sweetest. One one side of a hill is a love
ly spot dedicated to the preaching of the Word. It was built by the boys and
Mommy, of rocks all laid and cemented for seats and a lovely rock pulpit. One
day when we were almost finished we sent the big boys for two trees for the
cross. And it was good to see them cut it, nail it together and raise it up
some 15 feet high behind the pulpit and stone platform. Some sixteen miles away
you can see the Kingston harbor and the open sea. It is lovely and we pray for

many wonderful lessons to young hearts in this spot.

The second week in July was dedicated to the underprivileged children of the
camp area and it was a week of rejoicing. Fifty one boys and girls ages 9 to 15
attended. It was a day camp beginning with breakfast and ending with vespers.

Now after two more weeks of work we are ready for the sleep-in camps.
Thank you for your loving gift. It is truly appreciated for you have come to
mean much to us in the joys and sorrows of our work. Just two days ago our be
loved Bro Levy went to be with the Lord. He has assisted Jim in the ministry

at Memorial Chapel for several years and then for six years at Meadowbrook and

was chairman of our Home board.

We rejoice for him

but we sorrow in our own loss of this faithful

beloved friend of more than 22 years. As he

woke in the morning he told the nurses he was
going home that day. At noon he roused and be

gan singing lustily, "I will meet you in the

morning..preached a sermon, and then grad
ually quieted until he slipped away.

of course, is that Folks

don't call the larger is

the smaller ones are.

The continents of Africa,

the Americas, Antartica,
Australia, Europe/Asia
are islands; although so
enormous, they boggle
the mind to think of

"I '
Tt

them as islands. We is-

land-dwellers, as in Ja
maica, are used to see

ing the sea around us

like a great strong mother
surrounding us with her
love. She feeds us by her
bounties for the body
and spirit. The trouble is
that frequently, in history,
her love is so broad and

deep, she insulates us

too thorouglily moreso
in the days three centuries

ago when John Donne

penned his now famous
lines. Cuts us off from
our fellows of the race.
Removes from us the

reality of being part of a

whole.

And that is what we are.

All mankind are island-

dwellers. but none of us

arc islanders.

And each man's woe,

each man's diminishment,

as poet John Donne said,

diminishes the next.

Donne was a priest of the

church, a man whose vo
cation led him into many
kinds of human situations

and human problems. His

daily work was contiguous
to God and prayer; and
the power of our Divine
fatherhood, the sweep and
penetration of the good
news of the one-ness of

the universe, would have

been his daily experience.

And so the role of man in
the structure of God's

universe, the universality

of man, was a concern he
would give thouglit to.
He was also a man of un

usually wide experience.

It is sobering to remember
that in his 59 or so years,
he had been poet, soldier,
preacher, lawyer before
he was made Dean of St.

Paul's in London. Many

of his poems were concer
ned with God. It was

during a very serious ill

ness that lie penned his
famous lines that began,
"No man is an island..."

Wonderful thought to
remember. And so are the
words with which he clin

ches the sublime idea of

brotherhood indeed of
more than brotherhood.
Of One-ness.

tolls: it tolls for thee. ^

GRANDMA'S HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Every boy loves a (}randma. Our boys have

been very fortunate to have a Grandma living
in their home...a real Grandma wlio througli
the years has made sure that every guy gets
a birthday cake and that homework gets tak
en care of. She is there to hear their troubles

when Mommy is out on errands. She sUps

them little treats and enjoys them sprawled
out on her rug watching TV.

Grandma reached her 80th. birthday this

year and here she is cutting her lovely cake.
We enjoyed a family party. The boys all
dressed up in their Sunday best and made a
crown for Grandma's head. There were hot

dogs and Kool Aid as well as cake and it will

be a long time before the boys forget Grand

ma's lovely party.
AWAY TO THE U. S. A.

In the month of May the boys and girls at

Brownstown, Indiana, were counting the days
until their V.B.S. Jamaica was the country
for their mission study and they were to have
a special treat... the visit of their missionary
to Jamaica and one of the boys of the Jam
aica Christian Boys' Home. The day came and
Mommy Herget and Wayne arrived. It was a
great week and on the closing night of the
Bible School, the boys and girls very beauti
fully sang, "There is an Island in the Caribbean
Sea". Right in the middle of the song comes
the word banana...yes, those "tall Banana Tree
Trees." So instead of singing it like Americans
would, they all cheered out Bahnahnah trees.
They had been noticing Wayne's accent all
week long and decided to say it like hw did.
Yes, we had a lovely visit and we are tliankful
for the help tliey gave to all of our family in
Jamaica.

BILLY OUR PET GOAT

Danny had a little goat

His skin was white and brown

And everywhere that Danny went

The goat went right along.

He let him go to lunch one day
Against his Mommy's rule.
And just when Daddy looked around
The goat ate up his meal.

Now Mommy wasn't one bit pleased

"No goats in here" she said.
Then turned around in time to see

That goat eat up her food.

So Mommy took the broom to him

And put him on the run.

Oh how those boys did laugh and crow,
It was great family fun.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.

There were many other stops and lo\ing times

with boys and girls in Urbana, Illinois, and
nearby Heyworth, in churches in Indiana like
Brownsburg and Waynelown, New Market,
and Salem. Yes, Salem, where the boys and
girlsbrought big boxes of food gifts to take
back to our boys. In Nebo, Kentucky, and

College Park, and Decatur,Georgia. In Jack

sonville, Fla. we spent sevral busy days with
the boys and girls in their V.B.S. at Englewood
Church. In the picture you see their minister,
Fred Smith, and Mrs. Sloderbcck standing by
shelves laden with beautiful shoes for each

boy of our Home. The boys and girls brought

enough money for all the boys to have new
Sunday pants and shirts too. It wasgreat fun
shopping for all of them. But we weren't
through yet.

In Largo, Florida once again we visited their

V.B.S. and again were presented great boxes
of food for the Home family. We met boys
and girls from over 30 churches while in the
U.S.A. So we thank our dear friends at Brown-

stown, Indiana, for inviting us to come and

giving us our travel money as well as giving
us gifts to take back home to the rest of our
big family. Aunt Betty and EWin Gray
(minister and wife at Brownstown) love

Jamaica so much that they planned a trip for

members of the ciiurch to visit Jamaica this

summer. We hope to tell you about that next.

diaaiptes if ye have love one to-anotheri
Dear Christian Friends,

How beautiful Is the expression of God's love all about us and through
us at the Christmas season of the year!

Love In our Home has been the

backbone of all our Christmas.

Who could resist love *

For a three year old asking to go shopping.

For a boys' choir robed in white with red collars, marching

down a candle^llt aisle to sing and recite their own version
of Christmas.

For those big eyes over the steaming turkey and the little voice
asking, "may I have a taste?"

For a big dorm full of sleeping boys after a long day of romping
in God's wonderland, Sun Mountain. It was family fun time.
But love Is more than that in our Home.

It's sharing. For instead of gifts for each other, Jim and I bought
Bibles - lots of Bibles. Fifty went to the Sun Mt country children and
lots went to Meadowbrook.

What greater gift!

It]s love for the church too. AHd in December our Christian Evangel
izing Ass'n gave money for a floor In the Portland church building pro

ject SOTie fifty miles frOTi Kingston. Jim married a couple there recent
ly and spent a good day encouraging this new congregation.

And the month was climaxed with a telephone call from our son Tony at
University of Tenn.

He had had a wonderful trip with a friend who re

cently graduated from Johnson Bible College.

They hitchhiked to Cali

fornia to spend the holidays with his friend's parents. Tony continues
to do well In school and assures us that his Spiritual life is growing

deeper.

We are thankful for him and proud In the Lord.

And love also Includes you. For without you and your love for us and
support of this work, we would not be receiving all these blessings*
Thank you...from the depths of our hearts for all you have done for us

In 1976* Oh, how we do thank God for you! And we appreciate your

prayers and concern more than ever before.

May He bless you with a wonderful 1977.

Dear Friends,

How beautiful are the Psalms!

Listen to this..."Trust in the

Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily
thou shalt be fed." (37*3) And they express the praise to God
from our own hearts daily. Yes, we praise and thank Him for the
wonderful way He has met our needs. V/hen we received our finan
cial report from our auditors we were amazed to see how our in
come had increased to meet the needs. So we continue to trust
and to praise God...and to thank you.

Sun Mountain is now ready for the bulldozing of our play fields
and building sites.

Surveyors worked for more than two weeks

taking levels and planning the work. We can certainly tell you
that it is exciting progress.

The boys of our Home have already begun memorizing the Christmas

Scripture story and are humming carols. It comes early to them

because of school programs being held In early December.
The outstanding event for October was a Rally at Sun Mountain when
over 90 peopje from Meadowbrook and August Town churches met for a

day of study and praise and fellowship. It was our first adult
rally there and the folks were so thrilled with the success of it
that they are already planning a bigger one for the after-Christ

mas holiday. The messages were rich and the singing really great.
And we were glad that the food was plentiful or our dear little
goat might have found herself in the cooking pot.
Our vehicles have been in the shop too often in recent months and

5?,.'!^'--'i' '\i'

we realize that we must do something about a new one.

As from

December 1st we will be prayerfully laying aside funds toward this

and we are asking you to pray with us for this need. V/ould you
