Message from the Director
The information in our calendar makes it easier for you to
help us be cleaner, greener, healthier and safer.
Departmental Overview
The Baltimore City Department of Public Works is divided into two bureaus: Solid Waste and Water and Wastewater. Public Works
oversees many boards, commissions and permits. Over 2,000 employees assure that high quality water is available to metropolitan
Baltimore, that residential refuse is collected and that public areas are kept clean.

SOLID WASTE
The Bureau of Solid Waste collects residential trash and recycling
from 210,000 homes. It cleans city streets, alleys and publicly-
owned lots and it also cleans and boards vacant properties.
The bureau also picks up bulk trash items by appointment,
conducts city-wide cleanups, supports community pitch-ins
and coordinates special recycling of electronics and leaves.
The Bureau maintains a fleet of boats designed to keep the
harbor clean.

WATER AND WASTEWATER

The Bureau of Water and Wastewater treats and distributes
an average of 265 million gallons of water per day to 1.8 mil-
lion people in the Baltimore region. It maintains 3,100 miles
of sanitary mains that deliver wastewater to two treatment
plants: Back River and Patapsco. It is also responsible for 1,000
miles of storm drains and 33,000 storm water inlets. Its three
reservoirs - Liberty, Loch Raven and Prettyboy - provide clean,
safe water as well as recreational activities in the surrounding
watersheds.
Baltimore has Single Stream Recycling – All items collected in one container.
Recycling is an important part of our effort to build a cleaner, greener Baltimore. With SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING, instead of sepa-
rating your bottles, cans, jars and paper, you can now place all these items in one container for collection. DPW has also added more
varieties of recyclables which are acceptable.
Recycling conserves landfill space and reduces pollution and global warming. Resource recovery also saves money and creates jobs.
Many products we use each day are made from recycled paper, aluminum, steel, glass and plastic. Purchasing products made from
recycled materials is not only good for the environment but also good for the economy. Please recycle.
Recycling is good for you, good for Baltimore and good for the environment!

Acceptable Recycling Material: Aerosol Cans (empty)

Clean paper - all colors and types. - this includes Glass containers such as jars and bottles
catalogs, magazines, junk mail, newspapers and non-
metallic wrapping paper Metal food and beverage containers
Cardboard and paperboard boxes (including cereal Narrow-neck plastic containers (other than for motor oil)
boxes without liners and frozen food packaging) which carry codes through on the bottom.
Books (including paperbacks, textbooks and hard-
backs)
USING trashcans with tight-fitting lids is required
by law. USE the ones you already have. If you
don’t have at least one now - please get one.

Please place all recycling materials in recycle bins,

cardboard boxes or a clearly marked container
and they will be collected citywide on your
regularly scheduled recycling day. Please DO NOT
use plastic bags!

Set out recycling items by 6 a.m. for collection.

(The Downtown area is an evening collection. )
If your collection day falls on a holiday, Saturday
will will be the automatic make up collection day.

Unlimited yard waste (leaves, grass clippings,

shrub clippings) is still okay. It can be bagged or
bundled and set out next to your cans on trash
collection day. Please don’t mix trash with yard
waste.
