Govt Stops Giving Scholarship For Law

Studies

GOVERNMENT
is
not
giving
scholarships to students who want to
become lawyers because Fiji has too
many lawyers, and "probably too many
crooked ones too", says AttorneyGeneral Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
"We give scholarships for you to become
a nurse, engineer, environmental
scientist, a doctor, and all those areas that
we lack resources in, surveyor and civil
engineering. We don't give scholarships
for people to become lawyers. They're
too many, probably too many crooked
ones too," Mr Sayed- Khaiyum said.
This, he told the ACP-EU Joint

Parliamentary Assembly in Suva while

informing the delegates of Government's
education initiatives.
"Fiji is one of the few countries in
the Pacific that gives free education.
Completely free education from Class
1 to Year 13. Indeed from the second
semester this year, certain pre-schools
will also get free education.
"We now have an open and transparent
scholarship scheme. So if you're in the
top 600 students and you comply in
various areas of study that Government
believes we need expertise in, they'll
give you free scholarships."

He said, however, the point was that

the Fijian Government had something
similar to the Australian system where
they had a tertiary loans scheme for
those who qualified to gain entry into
university but did not have the means to
pay.
"We pay for that and you pay back
the loan once you start working. It
also means tested, so those that come
from families that have a high income
bracket, they pay about 1.5 per cent
interest bracket and those that are in the
threshold of about $16,000, they don't
pay any interest whatsoever."

EIGHTY public service vehicle drivers

have been suspended since January this
year for breaching the PSV Code of
Practice.
Land Transport Authority CEO Naisa
Tuinaceva said speeding was the main
reason for the suspensions, followed
by unprofessional behaviour and poor
customer service by drivers.
"We are particular with them (PSV
drivers) because they are also public
servants. The only difference is the mode

of operation," said Mr Tuinaceva.

He said there was a regulation that
governed the behaviour and attitude of
PSV drivers in public places which was
similar to the concept that applied to
civil servants.
"We have suspended 80 drivers so far
and this is a concern for the authority
because they are given everything
from basic customer service training to
defensive driving courses before they
are issued a licence. With all the rigorous

training they get, it comes down to

attitude. Some of them become different
people when they are behind the wheel."
Mr Tuinaceva urged members of the
public to report breaches by PSV drivers
to the LTA.
"We base our disciplinary actions on what
has happened to compromise customer
service so we encourage people to do
their part and report to LTA."
There are about 6000 drivers with PSV
licences in the country.

THE Fiji Sugar Corporation's Labasa

mill aims to produce 70,000 tonnes of
sugar this year.
FSC executive chairman Abdul Khan
said the mill produced a total of 63,000
tonnes of sugar last year.
He said this year, they would aim to
produce more and set a new benchmark
for next year.
When asked about the shipment of sugar

this year at the Malau port, he said last

year, the only shipment of sugar had left
the port during the end of crushing.
"There was only one shipment last
year which left Malau when the season
finished," he said.
"Since the storage capacity of the Malau bulk
is 20,000, and we intend to produce 70,000
tonnes of sugar this year, we may need three
and a half shipments this year. We are looking

at having the ships out fairly early so that we

do not end up having a backlog of sugar."
Mr Khan said they had encountered the
problem of sugar backlog in 2013.
He said because of a damaged rig at the
Malau wharf in 2013, they could not
transfer sugar to the ship because the ship
could not safely get into the port. He also
revealed operational costs of the three big
mills stood at $40,000 each on a daily basis.

A man who was found guilty for the

attempted murder of his ex-wife was
jailed for eight years by the High Court
in Suva.
Etonia Vosa, on January 2 this year, while
staying with his ex-wife Vaciseva Seru at
Howell Road, attempted to murder her.
Ms Seru was angry about an argument
they had the previous night and she
asked Vosa to leave.
Vosa asked the complainant for food and
it was served to him in the kitchen by Ms

Seru who then went to her bedroom.

He picked up a kitchen knife and when
Ms Seru was coming towards the
kitchen, then stabbed her several times
on her upper body with the intention to
kill her.
Ms Seru used her hand to defend
herself and she fell in the bathroom.
Vosa threw the kitchen knife when it
was bent and Ms Seru pushed him and
ran out of the house to call for help.
She noticed her two children watching

and crying.
Ms Serus medical report revealed that
she received lacerations on her left
forehead, upper left eyebrow, upper
left arm, left waist, three cuts on her
left posterior elbow and stab wound
on her neck which was repaired by
surgery.
Judge Justice Priyantha Fernando fixed
a term of eight years imprisonment
and also issued a domestic violence
restraining order to protect Ms Seru.

Jail Term For Breach

A man in the Central Division was
imprisoned to the Suva Corrections
Centre for 25 days after failing to pay
his fine of $267.25 for smoking in a nonsmoking zone.
The Ministry of Healths spokesperson,
Sunil Chandra, said Seru Beraki was
directed by Resident Magistrate V. Lal
to serve his prison term.
He was handed over to Police to be
escorted to the Suva Corrections Centre,
Mr Chandra said.
He said to date three offenders were
serving prison terms, two for selling
cigarette rolls and one for smoking in a
prohibited smoking zone.
Last week the National Tobacco Control
Enforcement Unit managed to locate
four other offenders, who later paid their
fines.
These were Kabir Feroz who paid
$150, Mohammed Feroz who paid
$250, Mohammed Shameem who paid
$1300 and Vilivo Tuinukumoto who
paid $70 with a balance of $197 to be
paid before the end of the month, Mr.
Chandra said.

604.510.4088

Meanwhile, the unit has so far booked

and fined 165 people for breaking
Tobacco Control Regulations. Units
acting manager, Nafiz Ali, said out
of 165, about 58 were caught selling
cigarette rolls and the rest for smoking
in public places.
Apart from that weve also fined
owners of registered retail shops, that
is, canteens, dairy shops, kiosks for not
displaying the no-smoking sign,
It is the responsibility of the owner
or person in charge to display a nonsmoking sticker. Failure to display the
no-smoking sticker will result in a fine
of $1000, Mr Ali said.
He said if retail shop owners dont
prevent people from smoking in
that public property they were
liable to another $1000 for failing
to ensure that no one smokes in a
public place.

Respect No Smoking Zones
The Ministry of Healths Tobacco
Control Enforcement Unit is pleading
with the public to respect areas marked
as no smoking zones.
This is after the unit reportedly booked
and fined 165 people for breaking the
Tobacco Control Regulations.
Unit acting manager Nafiz Ali said
people needed to know that they (the
unit) cant be there all the time to keep
an eye on everyone.
Everybody has to understand the unit
doesnt operate on a 24/7 basis. Like
any other civil servant we work 8am to
4.30pm, Mr Ali said.
We can monitor people during working
hours but not at night. There are a lot of
places where smokers have the liberty to
smoke; lets have courtesy for our nonsmokers.
Mr Ali said there would be no leniency
shown to those who break the Tobacco
Control Regulations.

More Than 46,000 Benefit From Bus Fare

Subsidy

The Fijian Governments bus fare

subsidy which was introduced is
currently benefiting more than 46,000
citizens including the elderly and persons
with disabilities.
Minister for Women, Children and
Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Rosy Akbar
says the beneficiaries comprise of
44,120 elderly Fijians who are 60 years
and above, and 1892 persons living with
disabilities.
She said empowering underprivileged
persons particularly senior citizens and

persons with disabilities is a top priority

for her ministry.
The Ministry works with Fiji National
Council for Disabled Persons (FNCDP)
to look after the welfare of persons with
disabilities. This is done through ensuring
that they are given equal opportunities
to
participate
in
development
programs, accessibility to education,
employment, health, communication
and transportation services.
We strongly believe that all women and
men with disabilities have fundamental

human right, and that it is an inherent

component of economic growth and
development. The Ministry through
its partnership with Police and the
Non-Government Organisations is
also addressing issues concerning the
mentally challenged who are left on the
streets, she added.
The Ministry has a budget of $150,000
for this initiative that allows elderly
persons to pay half the fare and persons
living with disabilities are eligible for
free bus fares.

Fiji Airways does not envisage any

impact as such from the introduction of
more flights between Sydney and Los
Angeles and San Francisco by Qantas
and American Airlines.
This response from our national airline
follows the announcement of a significant
expansion of Qantas and American
Airlines longstanding relationship.
It will see the US carrier fly from Los
Angeles to Sydney for the first time and
Qantas will return to San Francisco. This
is of course still subject to approval from
regulators.
Fiji Airways board director, Stefan
Pichler, said: Our core market is from
Fiji to the United States and we continue
to do well on it. We are constantly
developing our relationships with all
other airline partners, including Qantas
and American Airlines.
Fiji Airways flies to Los Angeles from
Nadi eight times a week using its Airbus
A330s. It is understood there are quite
a lot of connecting passengers from
Australia as well as New Zealand who

take advantage of the Fiji Airways

connection to North America via Nadi.
The new flights
Qantas will return to the Sydney-San
Francisco route from December 20. This
is currently the most popular onward
destination for corporate customers.
Services will initially operate on peak
days and ramp up to six per week in
January 2016 using its newer Boeing
747-400 aircraft with the same style
interiors found on the airlines A380s.
Qantas flights to San Francisco are made
possible by American Airlines starting
a direct daily Sydney to Los Angeles
service from December 19.
This will replace four Qantas B747
Sydney to Los Angeles services per
week and one Qantas B747 Melbourne
to Los Angeles service per week.
American Airlines Trans-Pacific flights
will be operated by its new B777-300ER
featuring lie-flat seats in First and

Business.
Qantas will retain its daily A380 Sydney
to Los Angeles and Melbourne to Los
Angeles services, as well as its B747
Brisbane-Los Angeles flights.
The airlines will codeshare on each
others services.
The airlines say this enhanced
relationship also provides opportunities
for future growth into trans-Pacific
markets not currently served by either
airline, such as New Zealand.
American Airlines chairman and CEO
Doug Parker said: Our customers have
asked us to expand to important business
markets across the Pacific.
Flying our flagship aircraft, the Boeing
777-300ER, to Sydney will provide
another world-class travel experience
from our key gateway at LAX.
The airlines will shortly apply for
regulatory approval for these new
arrangements.

Medicinal Kava Test

INTERNATIONAL buyers attending the
Fiji Tourism Expo had the opportunity to
peruse and sample medicinal kava.
The kava capsules and powder are the
latest addition to South Pacific Elixir's Taki
Mai brand, developed to pharmaceutical
standards through Nadi-based Douglas
Pharmaceuticals (Fiji) Ltd.
SPE founder Zane Yoshida said market
feedback had been positive. The products
were developed in the last few months
and launched at the Denarau-based expo.
"Because we were working to
pharmaceutical standards, we had to have
approvals in place from governments
we're looking to export to, so work in
progress for us was six to 12 months,"
Mr Yoshida said. "Feedback has been
very encouraging.

"We've been getting a lot of progress

here in Fiji with the tourist market, but
also we're getting a lot of interest in the
local market."
The products boast to be antidotes to
stress by relieving nervous unrest and
tension.
"At the moment, the finished products of our
shots are produced offshore in the US, so
we're bringing all our products back to Fiji
and partnering with Douglas Pharmaceutical
for all kava capsules and kava powder and
now our kava shots as well."
The company aims to expand its
presence in the US market and will also
launch in Australia and New Zealand
this year, aside from also signing up for
distribution in Asia.
"We now have three products for the

Taki Mai brand and are also looking at

launching a line extension to our shot
in six to 12 months. We didn't expect to
expand this quickly but market response
has been overwhelming."
Mr Yoshida also noted the positive
attributes of scientific evidence and
clinical trials at the University of
Melbourne proving the safety of kava,
alongside the lifting of a kava ban in
Germany.
Its Levuka factory has also been given
pharmaceutical Good Manufacturing
Practice (GMD) certification.
Douglas Pharmaceuticals (Fiji) Ltd
general manager Firoz Ghazali said
they were also pleased to note positive
feedback for the products they helped
develop.

Fiji, US Relation Special - Judith Cefkin

FIJI'S relation with the US is something
special dating back some 40 years, says
the country's ambassador to Fiji, Kiribati,
Nauru, Tonga and Tuvalu, Judith Beth
Cefkin.
Speaking during her first tour of the
Northern Division since taking up her
post earlier this year, Ms Cefkin said she
was excited to be in the North.
As part of her official tour, Ms Cefkin
paid a courtesy call at the Macuata
House where she met the Commissioner
Northern, Jovesa Vocea.
"We had a good conversation with the
Commissioner North Mr Vocea about
government priorities in the North," she

said.
"I am proud to be here in the North and
learn of the sugar and tourism industry's
contribution to the Fijian economy. Our
long history of engagement is something
that we treasure."
Ms Cefkin said she was also excited
about the US Navy Ship Mercy's
engagement in the Northern Division.
"The relationship between Fiji and the
US goes back some 40 years and we have

been working closely with Government

in addressing issues like climate change
that is affecting islands in the Pacific,
including Fiji.
"Part of the reason that I am touring the
North is to see the work being carried
out by the teams from the Mercy ship.
"We are excited to be working alongside
the Fijian Government and its armed
forces and providing our assistance to
members of the community in the North."

Fijian Students Graduate In India

Fiji is going to greatly benefit when six
students, who graduated with degrees in
various fields, return home from India.
They are Ratu Wame Ravubale, Farzana
Nisha, Binita Padayachi, Kaajal Devi
and two Fiji Sun journalists.
Graduates studying in three different
states in India gathered at Symbiosis
International University in Pune for
convocation.
It was a joyous day for us as we donned
our caps and gowns and readied
ourselves with a big grin.
Graduation is an important milestone in
our learning journey and as I spoke to
the graduates, each had their own story
of struggle to share. I would like to share
these to encourage students who are yet
to arrive in India.
At the same time it provides an
opportunity for them to convey their
appreciation to family and friends in
Fiji while they wait to collect their
certificates and documents.
These students came to India under
Indian Cultural Centre for Relations
(ICCR) scholarships to pursue different
degree courses.
Ratu Wame Ravubale
Ratu Wame Ravubale of Nawaka, Nadi,
completed his Bachelor of Science
Agriculture (Honours) from Chaudhary
Charan
Singh
(CCS)
Haryana
Agricultural University in Hisar,
Haryana State, India.
The 23-year-old wants to work in
research, particularly in plant breeding,
to help with the improvement and
sustainability of crops grown in Fiji.
I have already planned and am willing
to contribute my knowledge and skills
for the agricultural development of Fiji,
Ratu Wame said.
He recalled how he started his life in
India.
During the first few months I had to
adjust to the new environment, food and
weather.
I had problems with communication as
English was rarely spoken in my area
as well as lectures were delivered in
Hindi, he said.
However, he explained that as years
passed by, with the help of the Indian
classmates and fellow Fijians, life
became much easier.
I kept in contact with my family in
Fiji via mobile phone and social media
which reduced my longing for home.
The challenging in day-to-day life
was food, which was very spicy, but

604.909.4088

surprisingly now I am used to it, he

explained with laughter.
What I will miss about India the most
is its rich history as well as the cheap
lifestyle and not forgetting Indian exotic
cuisines, Ratu Wame said.
The youngest of five siblings is very
excited to graduate after fulfilling his
life-long dream.
I am very grateful to God, my family,
friends and well-wishers who have
guided and supported me in the four
years of academic struggle, he said.
My father Filimoni Ravubale is my
mentor and source of inspiration and I
am forever thankful to him.
He wished his father could see him in his
graduation gown.
In 2006 my father was diagnosed with
brain tumor because he overworked
himself just to provide food for us, he
said tearfully.
Because of the sickness he lost his
eyesight but God willing he will see
a new sunrise after almost 10 years of
darkness.
Binita Vikashni Padayachi
Binita Vikashni Padayachi also
graduated with the same degree and at
the same college with Ratu Wame.
Binita, originally from Lautoka, Fiji,
aims to become an agricultural officer.
This is my second degree and with
the skills and knowledge Ive acquired,
I wish to help Fijis agricultural
development, she said.
During my stay in Haryana State I faced
lot of difficulties.
The 26-year-old explained how she had
to adjust to the climate and peoples way
of life in India.
Despite all the odds I managed to
survive and finish my studies through my
parents support and encouragement,
Binita said.
She will be returning to Fiji next month.
Kaajal Kristika Devi
Kaajal Kristika Devi, 22, originally
from Labasa, studied for a Bachelor in
Commerce degree at Delhi University in
New Delhi.
Kaajal said graduation was a normally
a big event in Fiji but graduating with
Bachelors degree in India was a much
bigger achievement in her life.
I was excited about the graduation
since I am the only one from my paternal
side who has attained this and I am really
happy to have had the opportunity to
study and experience life in India, she
said.

info@fijitimescanada.com

India was not really the way I had

expected it to be and stepping out of
Fiji, my home country, was a totally new
beginning; it was the biggest decision I
had taken in my life, Kaajal said.
She said saying goodbye to my parents
and my family was really hard but I
managed since I was accompanied by
other students.
It was when I was alone that I started
missing home.
I really felt like running away to Fiji
because the air was suffocating and the
places seemed dirty, she said.
She said the food tasted different then
and mostly full of spices and masala.
I even ended up having stomach
infections and was seeing a doctor for
almost four months, Kaajal said.
She said there were a lot of problems and
challenges.
She said in university, students were so
ahead and understood better since they
were taught a lot more in high school.
The education quality is good but the
system is not good, she said.
If there was something you have to
do which requires signature from the
college it takes so many days, she said.
Despite all such issues Miss Devi was
able to enjoy her stay in India because
she stayed with Fijian students.
I really appreciate and thank Joveci
Katia for helping me out with
everything, Miss Devi said.
My parents have been my mentors
and all the credit of my success goes to
them, she said.
All their life they worked so hard so that
I could have a better life and education.
The second eldest of three siblings
hopes to become either a researcher or
an accountant.
Farzana Nisha
Farzana Nisha successfully completed
her Bachelor of Arts in Politics at
Fergusson College, which is affiliated
to Savitribai Phule Pune University in
Maharashtra State, India.
The former journalist also did a Diploma
in International Relations, Human
Rights and Role of International Law
from Abeda Inamdar Senior College of
Arts, Science and Commerce.
Farzana of Nausori said the journey to
graduation has been tough but her right
attitude and will to do something in life
kept her going.

Fijian Students Graduate In India

Being the eldest in the family and with
a lot of responsibilities to shoulder I did
not give up, she said.
My mother, whos always been my
mentor, encouraged me to stand tall
through the most difficult times.
I always believed in myself and finally
I did it, Farzana said.
She said it was very important to plan
goals in life.
I have always planned things and
sometimes it does not work out but as
the saying goes -there is a hundred and
one ways to skin a cat.
She said going home with a degree
in political science from a renowned
college and university, she has high
hopes to get a good job.
I have previous experience in
journalism and have enjoyed my work
as a journalist, he said.
Farzana said writing political stories was
always very interesting.
Hopefully I will join the political
arena in the near future. I have learned
a lot during my three years in India
and Im looking forward to putting this
knowledge to good use, she said. I
would like to thank my lovely mum,
Yasmin Nisha and my father Sheik
Ahmed, my uncle Safi Ahmed his wife
and two daughters, my aunty in Australia
Sadma Begum, my two brothers and
friends for all the encouragement love,
support and care throughout my life,
Farzana said.
Arieta Vakasukawaqa
Arieta Vakasukawaqa of Vutuna, Nairai,
Lomaiviti, also successfully completed
her Bachelor of Arts in Politics at
Fergusson College.
The eldest of six siblings also did
Diploma in International Relations,
Human Rights and Role of International
Law from Abeda Inamdar Senior College
of Arts, Science and Commerce.
The day when I graduated was one of
the greatest and most special days of my
life, Arieta said.
When I sit back and think of the struggles
and how sometimes I had to find ways
to survive because of allowance coming
late, it just brought tears to my eyes, she
said.
Arieta said her hard work had paid off.
I have made India my home; at first
life was quite tough for me personally
because it was a whole different
environment altogether.

604.510.4088

I used to tell myself that in order to

achieve my goal for the three years I will
need to adapt to the lifestyle in India and
this has changed the way I see things,
she said.
The academic experience in India was
tough because it was different from the
University life back in Fiji.
The lecturers were very strict and the
level of competition was something that
kept me on the move, Arieta said.
If you fall, no one will help you up so
the onus was on you.
Sometimes lecturers spoke in their
native language (Marathi and Hindi)
which was hard for me to understand
but I had friends who helped me when I
needed assistance, she added.
Arieta said despite all the ups and down
in life she would be forever grateful for
this opportunity.
I want to give thanks to the Lord for
with Him, I am able to conquer all and
achieve my purpose in India; that is to
complete my studies, she said.
I also want to thank my parents and
siblings for their motivation and neverending support, she added.
My upbringing has always been my
motivation, the struggles my parents had
to ensure in order to put us all in school
and provide for us; I owe them my
success, she added with great emotion.
She also thanked her relatives and friends
who have lent a helping hand in any way
during her times of need.
And a special thanks to Indian Cultural
Centre for Relations (ICCR) and Fiji
Government for this scholarship, Miss

My advice to young people is that one

your parents and work hard towards

with Farazana and Arieta in Pune.
Life in India over the three years has
changed my perspective as a feminist
and as a believer in Christ.
I have realised that life on this earth
comes only once and we should make
the best use of it.
Be it for oneself, helping family members
or encouraging friends to chase after
their dreams.
I am very thankful to God for blessing me
with loving parents, supportive siblings,
relatives, friends and FijiSun workmates
who have always encouraged me
through phone calls and social media to
accomplish my purpose of stay in India.
Despite being faced with so many health
problems and challenges, I am full of
gratitude because life in India has laid
the foundation of my career.
Thank you ICCR and Fiji government
for awarding me this scholarship.
I would like to encourage youngsters in
Fiji to choose to be educated and make a
good career.
The future belongs to those who believe

Young Girls Lured Via Facebook

There has been a noted increase in older
men luring young girls through Facebook
for sex in exchange for money.
This has been brought to the attention
of Fiji Womens Crisis Centre. Centre
co-ordinator Shamima Ali said with the
increase in access to social media, more
young girls were exposed to this behaviour.
We have received reports of young
secondary school students and University
students who have been lured by old
men, married men who then promise
them with better lives by buying them
expensive perfumes, taking them out to
expensive resorts, dinner dates and other
enjoyable lifestyle which most young
girls aspire to have, Ms Ali said.
In most cases, these men work together
as a group, they know each other which
means they pass contacts of these
innocent girls to each other and this is
how they work,she said.
Ms Ali said that once they receive such
reports, they refer it to the police.
The main challenge here is that it is
hard to establish the evidence as most of

these young girls do not want to come

out to speak due to the fear of being
victimized.
We try our best to work with parents and
these young girls by providing counseling
as this is also a form of prostitution and
at the same time warn young girls the
consequence of their actions.
However, if a girl older than 16 years is
consenting to sex, police cannot do much.
Police
Commissioner
Bernardus
Groenewald confirmed receiving reports
of such nature.
We do not work on the report that we

receive but we can only act on the report if

there is a complaint by the victim herself.
Under Section 214 of the Crimes Decree
it reads that if a girl is above 16 years old
and is consenting to sexual intercourse
then it is not a crime so that means we
cannot act on that. But what we normally
do is that if its a forceful and if a complaint
is lodged by the girl, then we act.
Mr Groenewald said according to the
Crimes Decree if the ages if the victim
is less than 13 then it is rape and if it is
between 13 to 16 and is not consented,
then its defilement.

Fiji Invested $8.6M For Golf

FIJI has invested $8.6million into the
Fiji International in its bid to boost golf
tourism in the Pacific region.
And with the Fiji International and Fiji
Tourism brands combined, Tourism and
Trade Minister Faiyaz Koya said this
generated a gross media value of about
$20m.
This, he said could be translated as a
return on investment by the Government
of approximately 64 per cent.
Mr Koya made these comments after
Fiji Airways and Fiji International broke
new grounds following the signing of a
three-year partnership agreement for the
professional golf tournament at the Fijian
Tourism Expo 2015 in Denarau, Nadi.
Fiji Airways signed on as the official
airline of the Fiji International.
A statement from Tourism Fiji said the
daily spend of a golf tourist while on
holiday was normally twice that of a
general leisure tourist.
It said that golf was a sport that could extend
the high season for tourism in the country.

"In terms of international marketing

and exposure, the Fiji International is
broadcast to over 400 million people
across 27 countries and marketing
tournament partners such as Flight
Centre to more than 2 million people,
with a total television coverage equated
to 462 hours - 46 per cent of which
was televised live in 2014," Tourism
Fiji executive chairman and acting
CEO Truman Bradley said. He said
golf events were estimated to be worth
$2billion a year and the "golf tourism

market something more than $1b".

The Fiji International will be held at
the Natadola Bay Championship Golf
Course from October 15-18 this year.
AT A GLANCE
* There are an estimated 80 million
golfers worldwide;
* There are more than 40,000 golf
courses around the world;
* Fiji signed a five-year agreement in
April 2014 with the PGA of Australia
to host the first-ever internationallysanctioned golf tournament in Fiji.

An 18-year-old youth of Nadi was sentenced

to five years imprisonment after he was
convicted of raping a 4-year-old boy in 2011.
Lautoka High Court Judge, Justice Aruna
Aluthge sentenced the youth without a
non-parole period.
Handing down the sentence, the presiding

judge says the purpose of the sentence is

to denounce the offence of rape.
Judge Aruna pointed out that the
aggravating circumstances in this case
that the youth exploited the vulnerability
of the 4-year-old victim, knowing that

FSC Expects Positive Crushing Season

Over 2 million tonnes of cane is expected
to be crushed this year producing over
240,000 tonnes of sugar from the four
main mills in Fiji.
This was highlighted by the Fiji Sugar
Corporation executive chairman Abdul
Khan during the opening of the Labasa mill.
Mr Khan said in order to achieve this
target, their basic strategy is to get a
consistent supply of good quality cane.
Getting a consistent supply of good
quality cane is important and secondly we
have to ensure that our mills run reliably
and continuously so that we reduce the
losses and improve in terms of efficiency
and extractions, Mr Khan said.
Mr Khan said as the Labasa Mill has
already started crushing, Rarawai Mill in
Ba is expected to start on the 23rd, Penang
on the 30th and Lautoka on the 1st of July.
Mr Khan said that they are targeting
close to 70,000 tonnes of sugar to be
produced by the Labasa mill.
We have just started crushing for this
season with the Labasa mill performing

well so we should not face any problems,

Mr Khan said.
Mr Khan said they do not foresee any
major issues at the moment,
However it was good to see the farmers
consistency as they started bring their

sugarcane to the mill a day before

crushing began.
As long as the farmers keep the canes
coming in consistently we will ensure
that we process it on a consistent basis
as well, Mr Khan added.

$1.125M Investment On Buses

Nadi-based Shahabud Dean Transport
Limited is the latest bus company to
upgrade its bus fleet. Investment is
$1.125 million.
Managing director Zane Dean said: The
Government has done so much for the school
children so we have to work accordingly.
We are benefiting from their decision
and allowing us to bring in more busses.
Mr Dean was referring to Governments
2012 policy on capital items (which refer
to machinery used in the manufacture of
approved goods) attracting zero per cent duty.
Demand
The six Hino AK 215 model buses arrived
this week. They were bought to meet the
demands of the public especially in the
Legalega and Votualevu area.
There is an increase in passengers as
the Government started giving away the
school vouchers, Mr Dean said.
The population in Legalega and
Votualevu is increasing day by day and
we have to provide enough busses to
cater the services.

Mr Dean had gone to Indonesia, in

January to ensure the custom-built buses
were suitable for Fijis road conditions.
We are simply ensuring that we give
better services to the customers and
meeting consumer needs.

We are also very pleased that the road

conditions are also improving and that is
very good for the busses.
The old buses will continue to run as
scheduled as these new ones will be
addition to boost their services.

Airline Provides Great Food

Fiji Airways Culinary ambassador Lance

Seeto believes food served on our national
carrier is flying high just like the airline.
He made those comments while
presenting the canaps and Fijian rum
cocktails at the airline booth during the
Fijian Tourism Expo on Denarau Island.
Mr Seeto said Fiji Airways have done
well this year.
Feedback
We can see improvement and the
feedback is like Wow!

604.510.4088

Airline food around the world is not

easy never mind which airline you work
for there is a process involved to cook it
earlier and to chill it.
We are in a year now with this ongoing
where canaps and cocktails from
Fijian rum we give to the business class

passengers before they arrive into Fiji or

when they depart.
These canaps need not be Fijian food
but it needs to be Fijian flavoured, either
it is coconut or spices and we match it
with Fijian rum, he said.
Mr Seeto was impressed with the food
presentations at the Expo as it has
become a focal point for the industry.
We have new blood and we have chefs
from Australia and Europe and they get
in on the same page now.
Mr Seeto is well aware of the need for
training for Fijis local chefs.
We still have the challenge for training
we need to understand that most of our
chefs dont eat the food we are serving.
We need to undergo training. There is
a love for the food now which is great
thing for tourism, Mr Seeto said.
Meanwhile, Victoria Wines hosted
the Food and Wine tasting festival on
Wednesday night at the Denarau Golf
and Racquet Club.
This is when resorts and restaurants
showcase their signature dish or canaps.

Taxi Driver Dead

Sawani parents Mukesh Narayan and
Mohini Lata cannot believe that their
son, Rajiv Narayan,is dead.
When they said goodbye to him on
Monday, they did not expect it was their
last farewell.
Rajiv, 24, was a taxi driver.
His parents were shocked to receive a phone
call from the Sawani Police Post that Rajiv
had died in a car accident in Baulevu.
An emotional Ms Lata said Rajiv had a brief
conversation with her before he left for work.
I had asked him where he was going,
he said he was going to the shop but
he didnt come back after that and we
never had any phone call from him or
anything, she said.
I just cant believe it, he was always a
happy person; never short on jokes.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro
believes Rajiv was trapped inside the
taxi when it plunged into the creek in
Waidra, Baulevu.
The incident occurred shortly after
midnight. The victim was returning from

dropping a passenger when the vehicle

he was driving veered off the road and
tumbled into a creek, Ms Naisoro said.
She said Narayan was rushed to the
Nausori Health Centre but he was
pronounced dead upon arrival.
Rajiv was a student of the Fiji National

Another Milestone
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
says the signing of the $65 million cooperation with the European Union is
another milestone.
He said the National Indicative
Programme marked the full restoration
of Fijis longstanding co-operation
provided for under the Cotonou
Partnership Agreement.
The agreement had charted a new course
of close and mutual co-operation in
various areas of development.
European
Commissioner
for
International
Development
Neven
Mimica, who signed for the EU, said this
was a unique occasion.
He said it had indicated that the EU had
resumed its full co-operation with Fiji.
Todays signature has become reality
following all the good progress Fiji has
done, Mr Mimica said.
He said it had formalized the full reengagement with Fiji following the
holding of parliamentary elections in
September last year. The UE was pleased

to contribute to the successful process.

It also formalized the resumption of
a close partnership through which the
EU and Fiji would further enhance
collaboration
on
developmental
challenges.
The National Indicative Programme has
been designed in close consultation with
the government of Fiji. To maximize
the value added of our co-operation
we have jointly agreed to concentrate
support on two main areas: Sustainable
Rural Livelihoods, and Public
Administration Reform and Governance
for which indicative financial envelopes
of respectively 47 and 18 million Fijian
dollars will be available.
He said they sincerely hoped that their
partnership would be instrumental in
supporting the promotion of rule of
law and political stability and equal
rights to all citizens, notably through
projects promoting access to justice
for all. Economic growth and creation
of new job opportunities are key to

development and poverty reduction.

This is why we are ready to continue
sustaining your sugar sector reform,
and promote Agriculture diversification

We ask for free visa to Europe
Fiji has requested to have visa free status
in the 28-member states of the European
Union (EU).
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
made the request at the political dialogue
in Suva between Fiji and the European
Union.
He relayed to EU rep Latvias Foreign
Minister Edgars Rinkevics Fijis
interest to be included in Annex II of
the Council Regulation the listing of
countries that do not require visa when
entering EU member states. Rinkevics
confirmed, the EU would consider it

Six Irish Students Dead In Berkeley,

California Balcony Collapse

Six Irish students died after an apartment

balcony collapsed in the California
university town of Berkeley.
At least seven people were injured, with
some in a critical condition, local media
reported.
The fourth-floor balcony collapse
occurred during a party at a building
located two blocks from the University
of California, Berkeley campus, local
NBC affiliate KNTV reported.
The Alameda County coroner's office
confirmed that a total of six people had
died.
Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said
all the victims were young Irish citizens
visiting the US on J1 visas, and that the

six killed were students.

The J1 work-study visa program allows
young Irish people to teach, study,
conduct research and work legally
during their stay in the United States.
"My heart breaks for the parents who
have lost children," Mr Kenny told
parliament.
"It is truly terrible to have such a serious
and sad incident take place at the
beginning of summer of adventure and
opportunity for so many young people
on J1 visas in the United States."
Irish foreign minister Charlie Flanagan
said consular officials in San Francisco
were in contact with authorities in
Berkeley and would provide assistance

to those affected and their families.

A consular emergency response line was
activated for those seeking information
about loved ones.
Berkeley Police spokeswoman Jennifer
Coats said that officers received a call
just before 1:00am (local time).
Thousands of Irish students arrive in the
US every summer on the J1 program.
A J1 visa is seen as a "rite of passage" for
many Irish students, with applications
from Ireland amongst the highest in the
world.
California is the most popular destination
and many Irish students live in Berkeley,
across the bay from San Francisco, when
US students go home for the summer.

An Indonesian woman who ordered the

contract killing of her British husband
has been sentenced to 12 years in prison,
a district court judge says.
Robert Ellis, 60, was found in a ditch
with his throat slashed in late October on
the Indonesian resort island of Bali.
Julaikah Noor Ellis, 45, had admitted
paying three men to murder her husband,
who was also an Australian passport-holder.
"The defendant has been proven legally
and convincingly guilty of deliberately
committing ... premeditated murder,"

Judge Anak Agung Ketut Anom

Wirakanta said at Denpasar district court
in the island's capital.
He said he took Noor's previously clean
record and her remorse into account
when determining the sentence.
Relations between the two soured over
their years of marriage, with Noor angry
that her husband had failed to provide
for her financially, the court heard.
She decided to have her husband
murdered, offering three men the
equivalent of $14,500 to carry out the

crime.
The court heard Noor invited the men
to watch her villa and prepare for the
murder and gave them details of her
husband's movements.
The three men, two of whom were also
sentenced to 12 years in jail, murdered
Mr Ellis at his home and dumped the
body next to a paddy field. The third
killer was sentenced on Thursday.
Noor is still considering whether to
appeal against the sentence, her lawyer
said.

United Airlines Apologizes To Passengers

Forced To Sleep In Military Barracks

United Airlines has apologized and

refunded fares to customers whose flight
from Chicago to London was grounded
last Friday due to a maintenance issue,
forcing them to spend the night in
Canadian military barracks.
People aboard the flight say the company
put its 11 crew members up in a hotel
after an emergency landing in Goose
Bay, Canada, while the 176 passengers
were bused to the Goose Bay Air Base.
There, they say, they spent the night
in cold military barracks and weren't
updated on their flight status.
"Once we landed there was nobody at all
from United Airlines to be seen anywhere,"
Lisa Wan, a passenger aboard Flight 958,
told the media. "No United representative
ever reached out to anybody -- no phone
calls, no human beings, nothing. Nobody
had any idea what was going on."
Another passenger, Lois Harper,
confirmed they weren't adequately
informed of what was happening, and

that the accommodations were sparse.

"While there was a bed, there were no
blankets ... and there was no heating in
the particular barracks building I was
assigned to," Harper said, adding there
also weren't any towels. Per CNN,
the overnight low was in the 30s and
passengers weren't allowed access to
their checked bags. The passengers spent
about 22 hours on the ground.
In a tweet that has since been
deleted, United told passengers its
crew members were put up in a hotel
because "the crew must rest in order
to continue the flight. You can rest on
board the aircraft knowing that they
are in charge,".
The next day, United provided breakfast
for the passengers, who were flown to
Newark, New Jersey. The passengers
then boarded a new flight for London
Heathrow Airport.
There weren't enough hotel rooms
in Goose Bay for passengers, so the

company turned to the local military base

instead, a United spokeswoman said.
"We apologize to our customers for the
disruption, and we recognize this was a
considerable inconvenience, so we will
be refunding their tickets to London and
providing additional compensation," she
wrote.
Following the outcry from passengers,
Jamie Snook, mayor of Happy ValleyGoose Bay, has defended the base and its
accommodations, noting the town took
in quite a few people who were stranded
after Sept. 11.
The accommodations they received
were standard military barracks that our
Canadian forces use regularly," Snook told
CBC Radio. "Our allied training partners
throughout Europe used them regularly
they're pretty standard. A little on the basic
side. They're not five-star, but considering
the alternatives where someone could've
slept that night -- in a terminal or whatnot
-- I would've been quite content."

Indian Man Guilty Of Victorian Hit-And-Run

Death Granted Bail In Delhi Ahead Of Extradition

An Indian citizen who fled Australia on

a friend's passport after killing a man in
a hit-and run incident has been granted
bail in Delhi while awaiting extradition
to Victoria.
Puneet Puneet, 24, pleaded guilty to
culpable driving in Victoria after the
death of 19-year-old Queensland student
Dean Hofstee in Melbourne in 2008.
Victorian police allege Puneet had a
provisional drivers license, was drunk and
driving at 148 kilometres per hour when
he crashed into Hofstee and his friend
Clancy Coker, who was seriously injured.
Puneet fled Australia using a friend's
passport in 2009 while on bail.
He was on the run in India for four years
until local police arrested him in 2013 at
a hotel several hours' drive from Delhi.
According to documents submitted to
the Delhi High Court, Puneet's lawyer
claimed he was suffering from a lifethreatening kidney condition.
Judge Vipin Sanghi granted him bail on
May 28.
"I am inclined to allow this application,"
Judge Sanghi wrote.
"The petitioner is a young person of 24
years of age and his medical condition
does not appear to be particularly good."

604.510.4088

Judge Sanghai said it appeared Puneet

needed medical care and attention that may
not be available within the jail hospital.
He also noted that Puneet had "already
undergone incarceration for about one
year and six months".
Puneet's lawyer Kanhaiya Singhal noted
in his submission to the court that, had his
client committed the same offence in India,
the maximum jail term would be two years.
If extradited to Victoria, he faces up to
20 years in prison.
Mr Singhal confirmed to the media
that Puneet had been released on bail,

but would not disclose his client's

whereabouts.
Under his bail conditions, Puneet was
required to submit a $4,000 bond, provide
the court with a phone number and ensure
the phone is kept "in running condition".
The court also ordered that he could not
leave the country without prior permission
and must attend extradition proceedings.
His next extradition hearing is scheduled
for July 9.
An Australian Federal Police spokesman
said it was inappropriate to comment on
a matter currently before the courts.

days after they claim their prizes. But the
new law doesn't take effect until July 3.
It also remains unknown if the winner
took the lump sum of nearly $120 million
before taxes or annual payments.
The winner had 180 days from the date
of the drawing in the multi-state lottery
game to come forward before the money
would go into an unclaimed prize fund.

White Gunman Caught In Killing Of 9 In

Historic Black Church

A white man who joined a prayer

meeting inside a historic black church
and then fatally shot nine people was
captured without resistance Thursday
after an all-night manhunt, Charleston's
police chief said.
Dylann Storm Roof, 21, spent nearly an
hour inside the church Wednesday night
before killing six women and three men,
including the pastor, Chief Greg Mullen
said. A citizen spotted his car in Shelby,
North Carolina, nearly four hours away.
The chief wouldn't discuss a motive.
Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley
Jr. called it "pure, pure concentrated
evil." Stunned community leaders and
politicians condemned the attack on The
Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal
Church, and Attorney General Loretta
Lynch said the Justice Department has
begun a hate crime investigation.
President
Barack
Obama,
who
personally knew the slain pastor, state
Sen. Clementa Pinckney, said these
shootings have to stop.
"At some point, we as a country will
have to reckon with the fact that this
type of mass violence does not happen in
other advanced countries," Obama said.
Pinckney, 41, was a married father of
two who spent 19 years in the South
Carolina legislature. He became the
youngest member of the House when he
was first elected as a Democrat at 23.
"He had a core not many of us have,"
said Sen. Vincent Sheheen, who sat
beside Pinckney in the Senate. "I think
of the irony that the most gentle of the
46 of us the best of the 46 of us in this
chamber is the one who lost his life."
The other victims were identified as
Cynthia Hurd, 54; Tywanza Sanders,
26; Sharonda Singleton, 45; Myra
Thompson, 59; Ethel Lance, 70; Susie
Jackson, 87; the Rev. Daniel Simmons
Sr., 74; and DePayne Doctor.
Sanders had recently graduated from
Allen University. Hurd worked for
Charleston County's library system for
31 years. Doctor was an enrollment
counselor at Southern Wesleyan
University's
Charleston
Campus,
according to a friend.
Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten
said autopsies would be conducted over
the next several days and did not have
specific information on how many times
the victims were shot or the locations of
their injuries.
Roof's childhood friend, Joey Meek,

604.510.4088

alerted the FBI after recognizing him

in a surveillance camera image, said
Meek's mother, Kimberly Konzny. Roof
had worn the same sweatshirt while
playing Xbox videogames in their home
recently.
"I don't know what was going through
his head," Konzny said. "He was a really
sweet kid. He was quiet. He only had a
few friends."
Roof had been to jail: State court records
show a pending felony drug case and a
past misdemeanor trespassing charge.
He also displayed the flags of defeated
white-ruled regimes: a Confederate flag
was on his license plate, Konzny said,
and a photo on his Facebook page shows
him wearing a jacket with stitchedon flag patches from Rhodesia and
apartheid-era South Africa.
Roof wasn't known to the Southern
Poverty Law Center in Montgomery,
Ala., and it's not clear whether he
had any connection to the 16 white
supremacist organizations operating in
South Carolina, but he appears to be a
"disaffected white supremacist," based
on his Facebook page, said the center's
president, Richard Cohen.
The shooting evoked painful memories
of other attacks. Black churches were
bombed in the 1960s when they served
as organizing hubs for the Civil Rights
movement, and burned by arsons across
the South in the 1990s. Others survived
shooting sprees.
This particular congregation, which
formed in 1816, has its own grim history:
A founder, Denmark Vesey, was hanged
after trying to organize a slave revolt in

info@fijitimescanada.com

1822, and white landowners burned the

church in revenge, leaving parishioners
to worship underground until after the
Civil War.
This shooting "should be a warning
to us all that we do have a problem in
our society," said state Rep. Wendell
Gilliard, a Democrat whose district
includes the church. "There's a race
problem in our country. There's a gun
problem in our country. We need to act
on them quickly."
"Of all cities, in Charleston, to have
a horrible hateful person go into the
church and kill people there to pray and
worship with each other is something
that is beyond any comprehension and
is not explained," Riley said. "We are
going to put our arms around that church
and that church family."
NAACP President and CEO Cornell
William Brooks said "there is no greater
coward than a criminal who enters a house
of God and slaughters innocent people."
A few bouquets of flowers tied to a police
barricade outside the church formed a
small but growing memorial.
"Today I feel like it's 9-11 again," Bob
Dyer, who works in the area, said after
leaving an arrangement of yellow flowers
wrapped in plastic. "I'm in shock."
The attack came two months after the
fatal shooting of an unarmed black man,
Walter Scott, by a white police officer
in neighboring North Charleston, which
increased racial tensions. The officer
awaits trial for murder, and the shooting
prompted South Carolina to pass a law,
co-sponsored by Pinckney, to equip
police statewide with body cameras.

Reasons To Include Prebiotics And Fibre In

Your Diet

Are you ticking the boxes when it comes

to eating prebiotics and fibre? Here are a
few great reasons why you should.
What improves your digestive health,
helps combat bloating, is your best friend
when it comes to weight loss management
and helps you feel good inside and out?
It may sound too good to be true but
prebiotics and fibre help do all those
things and more. Heres why you need to
welcome them into your diet.
1. Improve your digestive health
Naturopath and nutritionist Helen Ridge
says, Fibre is required for optimal
digestive health. It affects the health of
your digestive tract (intestine and colon),
and prevents symptoms such as bloating
and constipation. Prebiotics also
earn a gold star in the digestive health
department by stimulating the growth of
good bacteria in the gut a key to a wellfunctioning digestive system.
2. A better immune system
Did you know that 70 per cent of your
immune system is located in your gut?
If you want to be able to fight disease
effectively, its important to look after
your digestive health. Ridge suggests
incorporating prebiotics such as natural
yoghurt and miso into your diet for a
healthy digestive system.
3. It promotes the growth of good

bacteria
While prebiotics help to keep your gut
at optimum health by encouraging the
growth of good bacteria and promoting a
healthy gut lining, it also simultaneously
helps to minimise the presence of harmful
organisms by discouraging its growth. A US
study has found that dietary fibre also helps
the beneficial bacteria in the gut thrive.
4. Reduce bloating
How to banish dreaded bloat? The
best way to beat it is to have a healthy
gut. Prebiotics and fibre both help
to encourage and promote a healthy
digestive system which in turn will help
reduce the incidence of bloating.
5. Weight loss management
If you want to keep the scales sitting on
the right number, you need to take care
of you digestive system. Did we mention
fibre and prebiotics do a really good job of
doing this? As your digestive system has
the important task of breaking down food,
distributing nutrients and controlling
satiety, the better it works, the more youll
be able to control your appetite, avoid
overeating and manage your weight.
6. Lower cholesterol
Foods that are rich in prebiotics are
great for the heart and may help lower
cholesterol. These include whole grains,
asparagus and bananas.

7. It reduces the risk of disease

As we owe the majority of our immune
response to the state of our digestive
system, the better shape its in the better
it is at fighting disease. Prebiotics and
fibre both help to improve gut health
which helps to fight diseases such as
bowel cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
8. Absorb nutrients more effectively
When your digestive system is healthy its
better able to process food and absorb all
the wonderful nutrients in it. Prebiotics
and fibre both kick goals in the promoting
digestive health department so be sure to
incorporate them into your diet daily.
9. Avoid digestive issues
The rather unpleasant symptoms of
an unhealthy digestive system include
bloating, constipation and diarrhoea. Get
your digestive system in order and it will
keep these uncomfortable issues at bay.
10. Feel good (inside and out)
When youre processing food well,
absorbing nutrients efficiently, have an
immune system thats kicking disease
butt and avoiding issues such as bloating
and constipation, its impossible not
to feel great both inside and out. Your
digestive system is key to this, so its
important to have at least 30 40 grams
of fibre a day to keep it healthy and make
sure to consume probiotics regularly.

Quitting smoking can be daunting, but

the benefits of giving up are priceless
There are few things in life that we know
for sure can help us live longer, but one
thing we do know is that quitting smoking
can increase your life expectancy by 10
years, such is the impact this habit can
have on your body.
And the good news is that its never too
late to stop. If you quit before age 35, you
should regain all 10 of those years, and
even ceasing smoking at middle age and
older will extend your life expectancy by
five or more years.
It can be very difficult to quit, especially
if its a long-term habit. I speak from
experience. At first it seems as if theres
nothing to look forward to. You might
feel irritable, woolly-headed and suffer
from headaches, but those symptoms
soon disappear. The harder battle is the
social one, especially if your friends
smoke. It can be tough to keep saying
no. But after days, weeks or months of
struggle, you wake up one morning and

realise you havent even thought about a

cigarette for 24 hours and its a great
feeling.
Why quitting is a great idea
Not only will it give you a better chance
of a longer life, but those extra years
should be healthier, too. Youll be at less
risk of cancer, diabetes and dementia,
and within two to five years there will
be a big drop in your risk of heart attack
and stroke. After 10 years, your chance
of developing lung cancer will have
dropped, and after 15 years your risk of
heart attack and stroke will be about the
same as someone who never smoked.
Youll breathe more freely, you wont have
to wash your smoky hair as much, and
youll be part of those great conversations
you used to miss to have a cigarette.
Youll also enjoy your food more not
only will it taste better but you wont
be willing the meal to finish so you can
have a smoke. Things youve never been
able to do before will become possible,
whether its trekking in Nepal or playing

cricket with the grandkids for more than

a few minutes.
Its never too late to quit smoking, so
just do it!
The 4 Ds of craving control
The Cancer Council recommends this
four-step plan for coping with cravings
in the early days.
Delay... acting on the urge to smoke.
After five minutes, the urge to smoke
weakens.
Deep... breathe in and out slowly and
deeply. Repeat three times.
Drink... water, sipping slowly, holding
it in your mouth a little longer to savour
the taste.
Do... something else. Listen to music,
exercise or talk to a friend. After
quitting, being more active is the best
thing you can do for your general health
and wellbeing.
Your GP
Your doctor can assess your health and
put together a quitting plan that may
include pharmaceutical drugs.

Processed Red Meat Raises Heart Failure

Risk In Men

Love ham or salami for your breakfast

daily? Better cut down the intake for the
health of your heart.
An alarming research indicates that men
who regularly eat moderate amounts of
processed red meat such as cold cuts (ham/
salami), sausage, bacon and hot dogs are at
higher risk of heart failure and death.
Processed meats are preserved by smoking,
curing, salting or adding preservatives.
"Processed red meat commonly contains
sodium, nitrates, phosphates and other
food additives, and smoked and grilled
meats also contain polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons, all of which may contribute
to the increased heart failure risk," claimed
Alicja Wolk, a professor from the Institute
of Environmental Medicine at Karolinska
Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.
Unprocessed meat is free from food
additives and usually has a lower amount
of sodium, Wolk added.
"To reduce your risk of heart failure
and other cardiovascular diseases, we

suggest to avoid processed red meat

and limit the amount of unprocessed red
meat to one to two servings per week
or less," explained Joanna Kaluza, an
assistant professor at Warsaw University
of Life Sciences in Poland.
"Eat a diet rich in fruit, vegetables,
whole grain products, nuts and increase
your servings of fish," Kaluza added.
To reach this conclusion, researchers
analysed a cohort of Swedish Men study
that included 37,035 men 45-79 years
old with no history of heart failure.
Participants completed a questionnaire
on food intake and other lifestyle factors
in 1998.
After almost 12 years of follow-up,
researchers found that heart failure was
diagnosed in 2,891 men and 266 died
from heart failure.
Men who ate the most processed red
meat (75 grams per day or more) had
a 28 percent higher risk of heart failure
compared to men who ate the least (25

grams per day or less) after adjusting for

multiple lifestyle variables.
Men who ate the most processed red
meat had more than a two-fold increased
risk of death from heart failure compared
to men in the lowest category.
For each 50 gram (1-2 slices of ham) increase
in daily consumption of processed meat, the
risk of heart failure incidence increased by
eight percent and the risk of death from heart
failure by 38 percent, researchers noted.
The risk of heart failure or death among
those who ate unprocessed red meat did
not increase.
Researchers said they expect to find
similar associations in a current study
conducted with women.
"For people who eat meat, choose lean
meats and poultry without skin and eat fish
at least twice a week - preferably fish high
in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon,
trout and herring," researchers concluded
in an American Heart Association journal
Circulation: Heart Failure.

White Bread Helps Develop 'Good' Gut

Bacteria

Researchers have now discovered that

white bread might not be bad at all, as
it helps the growth of beneficial gut
bacteria, the deficiency of which makes
one vulnerable to diseases.
Sonia Gonzalez and colleagues noted that
the bacteria in our guts, or our microbiome,
play an important role in our health, and
one of the most effective ways to maintain
a good balance of the microbes living in
our guts is through our diets.
To figure out what dietary ingredients
promote helpful bacteria, Gonzalez's

604.510.4088

team asked 38 healthy adults questions

about their diets and figured out which
bacteria were present in the participants'
stool samples. Their analysis revealed
that pectin, a compound in citrus fruits,
lowers the levels of some helpful bacteria.

The researchers suggest that pectin

interacts with other substances in oranges,
leading to this unexpected effect. Their
most novel finding, they said, was that
white bread boosted Lactobacillus, a
group of beneficial bacteria.

Dealing With Mother-In-Law Conflicts

The profile
"I can't do anything without my motherin-law second-guessing me," Marjorie
said. "She sees me wearing a pink dress
and tells me I would look thinner in
black. I put a sweater on my son and she
insists he needs his winter coat. If I cook
with butter, she gives me a lecture about
cholesterol. She's always telling me what
to do. I'm nearly 40 years old and she
treats me like I'm a child. Besides, I have
my own mother to nag me. I certainly
don't need another nagmeister."
Does this description fit your mother-inlaw? Does she offer unsolicited advice
on any and all problems, even things
that she has had no experience with at
all? Does she see herself as an expert on
everything from the Elbonia currency to
zebra breeding? If so, you may have the
"know-it-all" mother-in-law dilemma.
These mothers-in-law share the
following characteristics:
They think they know more than you do.
Much more.
As a result, they offer "recommendations."
A lot of them.
They don't respect the laws of time and space.

Therefore, they offer their advice

anywhere: In your home, in their home,
at family gatherings, shopping malls,
political rallies -- you name it.
Their voices usually carry from here to
Guam. They like to give everyone the
benefit of their unsolicited advice.
They actually believe they are helping
you.
They usually have a need to control. Sort
of like a combination of Catherine the
Great, Atilla the Hun, and Roseanne.
What makes this situation especially
tricky is the sobering fact that these
buttinsky mothers-in-law sometimes
really do know more than you do. In
more instances than we might want to
admit, their advice is solid. After all,
they have had years of experience coping
with the problems that face newlyweds:
Settling money issues, furnishing a
home, allocating responsibilities fairly,
applying heat to food. In addition, they
have often dealt with the problems of
marriage veterans: Being the second
wife, dealing with step-children, and
balancing a career and marriage. So you
interfering mothers-in-law, don't give

up hope yet. We can reach an amicable

compromise here. I promise. First, let's
hear from my friend Elizabeth:
Elizabeth's mother-in-law went beyond
giving unsolicited advice and actually
interfered. "Our two daughters spent the
weekend with my mother-in-law while
my husband and I went out of town," she
explained. "Grandma has the tendency
to spoil our kids, and they already have
plenty of toys, so we specifically told
her to not buy anything for them that
weekend. When we got back Sunday
night, the first thing our daughters
did was show us the new doll house
Grandma bought them. I was so mad I
could barely speak."
What could Elizabeth do in this
situation? What can you do when your
mother-in-law criticizes you or interferes
with your family structure? How can
you discourage unwanted suggestions
without having a big confrontation? Try
the following three methods or select
the ones that best suit your situation,
style, and mother-in-law. Each method
will leave you and your mother-in-law
feeling well-treated.

Tips For Dry Skin

External factors are the most common underlying cause and the easiest when it comes to address conditions like dry skin.
But not just season change even internal
factors to play a vital role in maintaining
the skin. Internal factors like overall
health, age, genetics, family history and
external factors like cold temperature,
low humidity affect the texture of the
skin.
Winter season can be brutal on your
skin, since cold temperatures often mean
low humidity, which dries out the skin.
A dry skin looks dull and lacks luster.
The mainstay of winters is to hydrate
the skin and replenish the lost moisture.
Hydration of the body is very important
as it makes for a healthy functioning of
the system and youthful looking skin.
Skin can be hydrated in two waysinternally by drinking an adequate
amount of water, taking oil supplements
and externally by using products that
hydrate and moisturize.
The skin type differs for every individual.
It makes good sense to have a customized
regime to achieve a healthy skin. The
basic rules remain the same, the products
can be altered as per the skin type.

604.510.4088

The first step involves washing your face

with a gentle water soluble cleanser. It
should not have any agents like alcohol
witch hazel or even salicylic acid. The
cleansing should ideally be done twice
daily.
Exfoliation is a process to slough off
the dead skin cells and helps reveal fresh
and healthy skin. It can be done using
mild granular scrubs. This is best done
once a week.
Moisturizing is a vital step in skin
care regime. It is a misconception that
oily skin does not need moisturizers.
Oily skin also needs hydration, but yes
considering the fact that an oily skin is
prone to comedones and acne, a little
attention should be paid whilst selecting
the moisturizer. It should be noncomedogenic and oil oil-free.
Use sunscreen each day to protect your
skin. No matter what type of skin you
have, an oil-free sunscreen used each
morning before you go outside can help
your skin stay looking young, fresh and
keep it healthy.

info@fijitimescanada.com

Dry skin/normal skin: Mix 1 tsp of

malai and a pinch of turmeric and 4-5
drops of olive oil. Apply it and leave it to
dry, wash and pat dry.
Oily skin: Mix 2 tsp of raw milk or milk
powder, add 2 tsp of cucumber juice and
few drops of lemon. Apply this on your
face with a cotton ball. Allow it dry.
Wash with cold water and pat dry.
Combination skin: For the T-zone area on
your face, you can apply a mud-pack once
in a week to keep the sebum production
under control and to hydrate the rest of the
face, use a fruit based pack. Rub ice on the
T-zone to help tighten the pores.
Drinking water helps in flushing toxins out
of your body and eliminates the pollutants
that are present in the bloodstream.
Complement this with creams that
are rich in nourishing elements such
as almond oil, cocoa and shea butter
amongst others.
Alternatively one can also massage
almond oil or olive oil on the skin (can
be used on face as well in case of acnefree skin).

Boys vs. Girls: Who's Harder to Raise

Self-esteem CONTINUED
Who's harder? Girls
Developing a healthy self-image is
critical to all kids. But as the more
compliant and people-oriented gender,
girls tend to grow up less confident and
more insecure than boys."The tyranny
of nice and kind" -- unwittingly raising
girls to be people pleasers.
This cultural pressure to put others' needs
first, ignore one's own gut feelings, and
avoid asking for what one wants has
traditionally harmed girls. Despite the
fact that she enjoys the positive attention
and accolades that people pleasing brings,
the more a girl pushes her own needs and
desires underground to please others, the
more likely her own self-esteem will suffer.
"I see a natural nurturing instinct in my
daughter and her friends," says Tracy a
parenting consultant in Calgary, Alberta,
who has a girl, 11, and a boy, 8. "I find

myself saying, 'I can take care of that

-- you get yourself ready,' when she's
trying to mother her brother."
Make no mistake, helpfulness and
nurturing are virtues for everybody. But
this tendency in girls makes it smart to
help her explore and strengthen her inner
nature and encourage her to try new things.
Body image is a big part of self-esteem,
and though there's certainly body-image
dysfunction in boys and men, it remains
mostly a female issue. The natural rounding
out of the body that happens in puberty
clashes with the unnatural slimness girls
see in the culture around them.
Be aware of the messages you convey
about your own body, diet, and exercise.
It's painfully obvious that girls' negative
body image can come directly from
seeing their moms look critically in
the mirror and complain. Teach your
daughter to listen to her body's signals

of hunger. Girls who listen to their

bodies tend to listen to their instincts in
other areas. Sports are a great way for
girls to build confidence and a healthy
appreciation for their bodies.
School
Who's harder? Mostly boys
Boys and modern education is not an
idyllic match. An indoor-based day and
an early emphasis on academics and
visual-auditory (as opposed to hands-on)
learning ask a lot of a group that arrives
at school less mature. In their early years,
most boys lag behind girls in developing
attentiveness, self-control, and language
and fine motor skills.
The relatively recent acceleration of the
pre-K and kindergarten curricula has
occurred without awareness that the
brain develops at different sequences in
girls and boys. Music, clay work, finger
painting, and physical exercise -- early
activities that once helped lively kids
acclimate to school -- are vanishing.
Few teachers are trained in handling the
problems that result.
One area where girls do less well in
school concerns spatial learning, such
as geometry. Girls may use different
parts of their brains to process space
perceptions. The key is for parents to
present both boys and girls with plenty
of no-pressure opportunities to try out
the areas that are challenging.
The bottom line? On balance, the
general consensus seems to be that boys
are more of a handful early on, and
girls more challenging beginning in the
preteen years. Which means that, as the
mom of daughters who are 12, 9, and 7,
I have the next ten years cut out for me!

Tips For Getting Kids To Drink More Milk

Milk is one of the most nutritious choices
that kids can make at home or at school.
It's anatural, nutrient-packed food that is
a "good" or "excellent" source of nine
essential nutrients
that growing children need for good
health and strong bones. Here are some
easy tips to follow
to ensure your kids get the three servings
of milk they need each day.
1. Serve milk ice-cold, the way kids like
it, between 35-40 degrees F. Pour it right
before serving and promptly return the
container to the refrigerator so the milk
maintains its fresh taste.

604.510.4088

2. Be a role model. When children see

you drink milk, they are more likely to
drink it, too.
3. Serve milk at meals. Set expectations
ahead of time that milk is the beverage
of choice at meal times.
4. Serve flavored milk. Kids love it, and
ounce for ounce it has the same nutrients
as unflavored milk.
5. Stock the fridge with single-serve
containers of white and flavored milk for
grab n go.
6. Serve milk in special glasses and with
a straw. Let older kids use mix-ins to
create a new milk flavor.

info@fijitimescanada.com

7. Let children use a straw to drink the

milk left in the bowl after finishing their
cereal.
8. Order low-fat flavored milk in kidfriendly, single-serve containers instead
of soda when eating out.
9. Remind children to drink milk with
School Lunch. Studies show that when
children drink milk at lunch, they
have higher intakes of several critical
nutrients, including calcium, zinc and
vitamin A.
10. Send milk money and have children
buy milk when they take their lunch to
school.

How To Stock Your Kitchen To Lower Your

Blood Pressure

If you want to eat a blood pressure

lowering diet, you need to have blood
pressure friendly foods to hand.
One of the hardest parts about eating
healthily is making sure that you have the
right foods to hand when you want to eat.
The best way to give yourself a head
start is to make sure that your kitchen is
stocked with the right ingredients.
Every kitchen needs a fruitbowl
Fruits and vegetables should make
up the largest part of your daily food
intake. They are a vital part of any blood
pressure diet and will help to lower blood
pressure. Keeping a good supply of fresh
fruit can help you to steer clear of cakes
or biscuits, and will help you to eat the
recommended 5 portions a day.
Fruits are low in calories, contain helpful
fibre and are packed with vitamins,
minerals and antioxidants. Different
fruits contain different nutrients and
it is best to eat a range of fruits to get
the most benefit. This will also help you
to avoid becoming bored of eating the
same fruits day after day.
What every kitchen cupboard needs
Wholegrain pasta, breakfast cereals and
rice: eating more wholegrains that will
help to reduce your risk of heart disease.
Brown rice, wholewheat pasta and
wholegrain cereals are good choices.
Nuts and seeds: these are a good source
of minerals and fibre, but they can also
be high in fat. A good rule of thumb is no
more than handful or two a day. Avoid
the roasted and salted types. (Any added
salt will act to raise your blood pressure.)
Canned fish, fruit, vegetables and beans:

canned products can be just as good as

fresh or frozen, but make sure to choose
those that have been packed in fresh
water or their own juice. Avoid foods
that are packed in oil, brine or syrup, or
have added salt or sugar. (Again foods
packed in brine or that have been salted
will act to raise your blood pressure.)
What every fridge needs
Fresh vegetables: fresh vegetables
(along with fruit) provide a powerful
punch of vitamins, antioxidants and
minerals, including potassium which can
help lower your blood pressure. As with
fruit, eating a range of vegetables will
give you different health benefits.
Dairy products: these can be a good source
of calcium (which keeps bones strong),
but they can also be high in saturated fat,
and some cheeses can be very high in salt.
The best choices are skimmed and semiskimmed milk, low-fat yoghurt, goats
milk and goats cheese or low-fat cheeses
such as soft or cottage cheeses.
Fruit juice and smoothies: a 150ml
glass fruit juice counts as one portion.
Smoothies can increase your intake of
fruit even further since they contain the
whole of the fruit. Avoid juice drinks
as these may only contain a small amount
of fruit and may be high in added sugar.
Fresh or cooked meats: choosing oily
fish (such as salmon, tuna or mackerel),
chicken and lean meats (those with all
the fat cut off) will make sure that your
body is not taking in too much saturated
fat. The healthy oils in fish will also help
to make sure that there is a good balance
of cholesterol in your blood. Avoid fatty

cuts of meat, or prepared foods like

scotch eggs or sausages, as these can be
high in salt and saturated fat.
Eggs: eggs can be a useful source of
protein and minerals when eaten in
moderation.
Salad dressings: salads should be an
important part of your diet, but if you are
buying salad dressings, always check the
label to see how much salt, sugar and fat
they contain. (If they contain too much
salt, they may undo all the blood pressure
lowering work of the salad.) Better still,
you can make your own simple salad
dressings with olive oil and vinegar or
lemon juice.
What every freezer needs
Frozen vegetables: Frozen vegetables can
be just as good as fresh and work just as well
at lowering your blood pressure. But choose
varieties that have only been washed and
picked they should contain no extra salt.
Vegetables with sauces are far more likely
to contain added salt and saturated fat.
What a bread bin needs
Low-salt or no-salt bread: Bread is an
important part of our diet because it is
high in carbohydrates and fibre, low
in fat and a good source of energy.
Unfortunately, most manufactured bread
you buy in bakers or supermarkets
contains large amounts of salt and act to
raise your blood pressure.
The best choice is to make your own
bread without salt. If you can't do this,
then choose brown or wholemeal breads
instead of white, and compare brands
to see which have the lowest amount of
salt.

Benefits Of Pineapple Juice

Pineapple juice contains several vitamins
and enzymes that offer a range of health
benefits. For the best health benefits,
look for raw or fresh pineapple juice
rather than processed pineapple juice.
Processed juice often contains added
sugar or preservatives. You can make
your own fresh pineapple juice at home,
using a juicer. Choose ripe pineapples
for the best juice.
Bromelain
Pineapple juice contains the enzyme
bromelain, a natural anti-inflammatory
that encourages the healing of bruises
and swelling in the body, according to
the Feminist Womens Health Center.
Bromelain can reduce arthritis pain and

604.510.4088

postoperative swelling. This enzyme

also promotes good digestion by helping
the body break down proteins.
Vitamin C
According to survey an 8-oz. serving
of fresh pineapple juice contains about
75% of the daily recommended amount
of vitamin C. Vitamin C functions as a
natural antioxidant. Vitamin C promotes
a healthy immune system and can help
you recover more quickly from a cold.
Vitamin C also promotes cell growth,
tissue repair and the bodys production
of collagen, a protein that plays an
important role in the healing of wounds.
Vitamin C also helps the body to
metabolize fats and absorb iron.

info@fijitimescanada.com

Vitamin B
An 8-oz. serving of pineapple juice contains
about 20% of the daily recommended
thiamine intake. Thiamine belongs to the
vitamin B group. This vitamin boosts your
metabolism by helping your body convert
carbohydrates into energy.
Pineapple juice also contains vitamin
B6, which helps your body regulate
blood sugar. This vitamin also promotes
a healthy immune system.
Potassium
The potassium in pineapple juice can
help you maintain the proper electrolyte
balance to prevent muscle cramps and
soreness. This mineral also promotes
proper kidney functioning and digestion.

Aries

Be on the lookout for romantic signals in

unlikely places this week; you might meet
an extra-special someone in such places
as the elevator to the dentists office
or in line at a department store while
waiting to make an exchange. Especially
when it comes to matters where you are
better informed than your associates, do
not let others do your thinking for you.
Trust your knowledge. Your fortunate
astrological number for this week is 780.
Your financial outlook for week is poor.
Your compatible sign for week is Libra.

Leo

Taurus

Love may have made you absent-minded

this week, and the reservations for a
special event or show that you were
supposed to handle may have never been
made. A phone call from a work associate
in the early evenings may be a request
for a lift to work next day. Be ready
and willing to make some concession
or compromises this week and you
should be able to amicably work out an
agreement with another that is important
to your cause. Your fortunate astrological
number is 476. Your financial outlook is
very good. Your compatible sign is Aries.

You may hear some loud and enthusiastic

remember these might not be necessary if
the investment is as hot as proclaimed.
Co-workers may request your assistance

with members of the opposite gender.

finding solutions to your dilemmas. Your
fortunate astrological number is 613.
Your financial outlook is very good. Your

if its not too active. The planets have
lined up to create a fixed cross by Sign in
your horoscope. They tell of relationship

to boss anyone around. Although you
can walk with crowds this week and
feel at ease, your best communications
will take place in small groups with
whom you can enjoy more intimacy.
Your fortunate astrological number is
079. Your financial outlook is poor. Your
compatible sign is Libra.

Aquarius

Work associates may be cooperative

in the mornings. and then extremely
uncooperative after lunch. Plan your
work accordingly. It wont be easy
to avoid a lovers spat this evenings,
especially if there has been a recent
stress on expenses for entertainment.

Spy (PG) ****

Look out, Mr. Bond. Sparks fly big
time in Spy. Much better than 20th
Century Fox's previous Kingsman,
clearly director Paul Feig truly knows
what he's doing when it comes to slicing
and spicing up the world of espionage.
Consider this year to be the biggest year
in secret agent fare since the real James

in the swinging 60s. No less than 4 big
screen espionage flicks are on route over
the next few months including The Man

and Spectre coming in November. Right
now Comic chaotic fun comes your way

Not since the first Austin Powers

Perfect timing, non-stop gags and

Case Against Amitabh, Abhishek Over

Tricolour Insult

A case has been filed against Bollywood

star Amitabh Bachchan and his son
Abhishek Bachchan in a Ghaziabad
court, saying they were seen covering
their bodies with the national flag in a
manner insulting to the nation.
Complainant Chetan Dhiman in his
complaint before the judicial magistrate's
court said the actors were seen with the
national flag during the India-Pakistan
World Cup cricket match in Adelaide on
February 15.
Dhiman's lawyer Sanjeev Sharma said
the complainant and five of his friends
saw the mega star wearing the national
flag in an insulting manner.
He said that by such an act, the
internationally acclaimed cine star and
his son downgraded India's reputation.
He said the actors' act was covered under
The Prevention of Insults to National
Honour Act, 1971, and the Flag Code
of India, 2002, and both should be
summoned before the court to face trial.

Mehr Jessia, Arjun Rampal Heading For

Divorce

The news about Mehr Jessia and Arjun

Rampals getting divorce are almost
confirmed now. Earlier there were
speculations about their partition and
now the report comes out to be true. Due
to some unknown marital problems,
Arjun and Mehr are partying ways.
They are seeking divorce on mutual
consent.
In March this year it was reported that
Mehr and Arjun filed for divorce at a
family court in Bandra but the couple
refuted the rumor and slammed the
media for spreading wrong news.
However fresh report surfaced that Mehr
has been consulting senior advocate

Mrunalini Deshmukh for a while now.

Arjun burst his anger on media when the
news of their divorce was made public.
The report spread when the duo was
'spotted' outside court on March 9.
The actor also vented his anger on
media, asking them to 'mind their own
business' and to stop 'cooking up stories.
From today I refuse to do any personal
interviews or discuss my personal life
with any media person. Mind your own
business.
Married in 1988, Arjun Rampal and
former Miss India Mehr Jesia were
blessed with two daughters, named Myra
and Mahikaa.

Deepika-Ranveer's Engagement On Cards

There is ultimately a good news for the
Bajirao Mastani couple's fans, Deepika
Padukone and Ranveer Singh have
finally decided to settle down. According
to the grapevine, the respective families
of the couple, have also given a green
signal to Deepika and Ranveer to take
their relationship to the next level.
The rumours suggest that Ranveer and
Deepika would be officially exchanging
rings in February 2016. However,
Ranveer has recently been vocal about his
desire to settle down and start a family.
Apparently when the star was asked
about marriage he stated, "I am going to
turn 30 in July. I had a different take on
marriage, family and relationships. But I
have matured. Earlier I was uneasy at the
rate in which divorces were happening
among professionals... I believed people
were happier being single and marriage
was redundant. But in past three years
some experiences have changed my
outlook."
Not only this, Ranveer flew specially to
Bangalore to attend Deepika's father's
60th birthday, due to which the star had
to postpone his rehearsals for IIFA 2015.
The insiders stated, that the Ram-Leela
actors played perfect hosts during Mr
Padukone's birthday celebrations.
Ranveer had also made a few alterations
in his IIFA 2015 rehearsal schedule, to

604.510.4088

be a part of Deepika's fathers birthday

bash. He rehearsed prior to his Banglore
trip and then flew straight to Malaysia
for the award function post birthday

celebrations.
Well, we definitely see the spark between
the couple and we hope the couple
officially announce their engagement.

Dave Babych Misses His Canucks Job

Dave Babych has been out of hockey
now for almost a full year after being
gonged from his player-development
role with the Vancouver Canucks last
July by former teammate Trevor Linden
and GM Jim Benning, and he misses that
kind of work.
Part of the reason is that he still has a
terrific relationship with many of the
players hes worked with during his time
in the Mike Gillis regime. They will call
from time to time just to check in with
him or perhaps ask his opinion of certain
situations, given his many years as a
player in the NHL.
Not surprising, Babych is still very
much a Gillis fan, and he would still
like to work in hockey in this area, so he
didnt want to say too much about what
transpired as those kinds of comments
tend to deter future potential employers.
But theres no question Babych deserves
at least a small part of the credit for this
gradual buildup of promising prospects
the Canucks have, both regimes having
had a hand in the fellows on hand, many
of whom were helpful or could have
been, in Uticas trip to the AHL final.
It was the relationships with some
of these guys which I found most
rewarding, Babych was saying after
playing in the McDonalds Challenger
golf tournament at Meadow Gardens
Tuesday, the Pitt Meadows event one
of the best sports-related charitable
endeavours you can imagine. Like Yann
Sauve, whos not with the organization
anymore. I still talk to him. You get a call
out of the blue from Kevin Connauton
... and when guys get traded and when
they have a good game, you text them
and theyll send you something back.
Its not that you want to be their buddies,
but you do. You care about what theyre
doing; you have to because outside that
little bubble of development, theres a
lot of OK weve got this guy here and
OK, throw him around or whatever.
They may not be treated that way, and
maybe not by intent, but thats just the
way the business is.
So when you get them at a young age
theyre going to have their ups and downs
and disappointments and the bigger
highs. But you want to be there for both
so they learn from both and not just be
pushed down and then be told what to do
all the time and wait your turn because
sometimes after two or three years in an
organization it gets pretty frustrating.

604.510.4088

Dave Babych, the former Vancouver Canucks defenceman, had a playerdevelopment role with the team but was let go last July.
And a lot of organizations throughout
will make up their minds on a guy pretty
quick. Or a GM or assistant GM or even
a coach will make the decision, I dont
like that guy and Im not going to play
him, and the guys career just like
that.
Development personnel have to be
advocates for the prospect players; those
guys have to be able to trust you.
Babych is particularly close and
attentive to Frankie Corrado. Hes
been a great and longtime advocate
for Alexandre Grenier, who has finally
shown his outstanding offensive ability
in these recent AHL playoffs with 15
points and a plus-11 rating in the 23
games. And Babych thinks Ben Hutton
is going to be an outstanding, lateGillis-administration draft pick if hes
developed properly.
I think hes a terrific player; he reminds
me a lot of Kevin Connauton, just great
instincts, a great wrist shot because he
gets it through from the point all the

time, which is an art in itself. He needs

an opportunity because those guys are
hard to find, they just have a knack for
it. And hes got an edge too; he plays
hard in front of the net even in college
hockey.
Babychs most rewarding experience in
development?
Theres a few different times, but for
instance when Frankie got called up,
comes in and scores a goal. Well, hell
be on the phone right after and hes on
top of the world, and you know, so are
you because you dont know how much
influence you had on him, but you tried
to do what you could with what tools
you had.
When things like that happen its
special because I remember my first
goal and you wanted to tell the world but
back then you had to etch it on a piece
of stone. But now you get on the phone
or text and congratulate him because
you know those milestones will never be
forgotten.
