Calling all

Shawnee High School Class of 2015

National Amateur
Radio Field Day
exercise June 27-28
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun

SEAN LAJOIE/The Sun

The class of 2015 entered the football field by taking a lap around the track before it was seated at Shawnee Regional High Schools
commencement ceremony. Friends and family filed into the bleachers at the field as the clouds rolled in, but the rain held off long
enough for the Renegade seniors to receive their diplomas and celebrate their four years of memories. For more photos, please see
page 10.

Amateur radios roots can be

traced to the 19th century.
Over time, amateur radio, or
ham, enthusiasts have significantly contributed to a number of
things such as science, engineering, industry and social services.
There are about 3 million operators active worldwide.
The term "ham" as a nickname
for amateur radio operators originated in a derogatory usage by
operators in commercial and professional radio communities.
Members of the Burlington
County Radio Club will be participating in the National Amateur
Radio Field Day exercise June 2728 at the Tabernacle Emergency
Services Building. This is usually
the clubs biggest event of the
year.
Field day will give ham radio
operators a venue to demonstrate
the science and skills of amateur
radio by showcasing their temporary ham radio stations in a pubplease see AMATEUR, page 14

Students hand-deliver food donation to church

Fourth-grade students from
Cranberry Pines Elementary
School delivered more than 7,500
nonperishable food items that
they collected between May 13
and 28. They formed an assembly
line at the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul in Medford on June 11, allowing every student to literally

lend a hand for every food item

delivered.
This is the 12th consecutive
year that Cranberry Pines students and families have collected
food benefitting local families
through the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul. Students lead the food
drive each year by distributing

flyers and giving speeches to each

class to kick-off the effort. They
make daily collections and record
the number of food items collected. Bags of food line the halls of
the school so the students can see
the scope of the donations. In all,
students have collected more than
49,000 items.

Lenape students parking

on MYAA lot raises concern
We are now scheduling SPRING CLEANUPS!

By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
Lenape High School students
parking at the Medford Youth
Athletic Associations girls softball field on Hartford Road was a
topic for concern at the Medford
Town Councils last meeting.
Seniors have the opportunity
to purchase a parking pass to
park in the lot on Lenape
grounds, but this only leaves
about 25 spots for those who are
not seniors. For years now, juniors who have their license have
been parking across the street
from Lenape in the MYAA lot.
The Lenape students who park
there are not required to have a
permit so it is wide open parking
on township property on which
Medford is liable.
Cherokee, Shawnee and Seneca
high schools do not allow students to park outside of their
property; Lenape is the only
school in the district that does
this.
We received some complaints
from some neighbors about the
dust, kids speeding out of there
and just the way they drive
around in the parking lot, Med-

OPEN 7 DAYS

ford Township Clerk Kathy Berger said.

This is not the first time the
topic has been brought before the
Medford Town Council. In 2012, a
resolution added crossing guards
there.
It was suggested by Mayor
Charles Watson to handle the scenario like they handle roadwork
or a parade.
There needs to be a police officer there for certain hours, and
the school would be responsible
for paying for that, Watson said.
He also suggested the idea of
charging kids for a parking permit in the MYAA lot, similar to
how the school charges to park in
its lot on campus.
The township has had discussions with the schools about taking the parking away altogether,
but Lenape argues it does not
have the capacity at the school.
Also, the council showed concern that if it does not allow the
students to park there, they will
have problems in other areas or
neighborhoods that are still in the
township.

in our opinion

Schools out for summer!

Stay involved this summer, and help us be the best we can be
hrow your hats in the air, pick
up a beach chair, put on a nice
pair of sandals and relax ...
summer is here!
Life changes here in New Jersey for
two-and-a-half months once school
lets out for summer recess. The kiddies are home, which makes us change
our normal routine. Traffic eases up at
the typical before-school and afterschool rushes, and families head out of
town for vacation.
We here at The Sun dont take vacations. Well, thats not true, but our dedication to providing the best coverage
of town doesnt waiver one bit. If anything, summer allows us to focus even
more on the special people, places and
things that make our town so wonderful.
Every summer, the end of the school

our pages will be blank.
True, summer often does signal a

school district-related business, but
there is plenty of newsworthy happenings around town to keep your interest
piqued.
Summer is a time when we often

Medford Gazebo Jams return on new night

Musical event to be held on Tuesday nights at Main Street Gazebo
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
Calling all Medford residents who like
summer and good music Gazebo Jams
season is back. This event has been running for more than 15 years and attracts
music fans from all over the spectrum.
It could be bluegrass one week and folk
the next, anywhere from classical music to
popular jams, Nancy Longenecker said.
Its a good variety and it is all acoustic.
Longenecker is in charge of Gazebo
Jams. She will also be accompanied this
year by her friend Karen Kramer.
Unlike previous years when it was held
on Friday nights, this weekly event will be
held at the Main Street Gazebo on Tuesday
evenings from 7:30-9:30 p.m.
The Medford Arts Center will be open for

inclement weather, which includes rain, excessive heat and too many overly friendly
mosquitoes. The MAC will also be allowing
folks who attend to use its restrooms.
The first Jam of the summer was last
night, and they will continue next Tuesday,
June 30 and all the way through August,
concluding on the final Tuesday of the
month. There will be 10 Gazebo Jams
throughout the summer.
The event began as a leisurely activity
and has remained a casual service to the
town. It has never been geared toward raising money or awareness for a cause.
Everyone loves it and the township is
very supportive, Longenecker said.
The crowds differ from week to week,
sometimes just drawing a few musicians
and other times hosting 20 to 25 performances. It is all volunteer musicians playing

this music in a jam format, as the musicians described it. A jam is when people
just come out for the enjoyment of the
music and to pick up tunes and pointers
from the musicians performing.
Folks often bring out lawn chairs and
blankets, they love to just come and listen,
Longenecker said.
All audiences of music are welcome to
play or to attend and enjoy the music at
Gazebo Park. Folks who are interested in
playing do not need to qualify or sign up,
just need to come ready to share their
music with others.
I love this event because of the comradery and the sharing of the music. If the
tune is new, theyll work on it with you,
Longenecker said. Its really wonderful.
Its a learning experience as well as a time
to play.

sidewalks and traffic guards.

As far as the dust problem, it is
not a paved field, and Councilman
Chris Buoni suggested talking to
the school about having the lot
paved to negate the erosion problem.
If their use of the lot is creating that kind of wear and tear on
it, than maybe the school can pay
to correct the problem, Buoni
said.
However, paving the lot could
lead to strengthening the core of
this problem in the end.
The only problem I have with
paving is that it would enable
them to go even faster. Right now
they have to go over little bumps,
Berger said. When we paved
Hartford Crossing, we made it a
speedway.
It was suggested by the public
to have a staff member from
Lenape who doesnt have a home-

room check the students into the

lot and once more during the day
check the cars in the lot for anything suspicious.
This was suggested because
though all of the kids involved
are from Mount Laurel, any incidents would cost the township of
Medford.
These arent Medford residents, so why should Medford taxpayers pay for any alterations?
Buoni asked.
As the school year is now officially over, this will be a problem
that will be temporarily fixed
while the students are home for
the summer.
The council will now be looking to work on regulating this
problem for the years to come.
We are just looking to open up
the dialogue with the school at
this point, Berger said. I will report back.

nect it to the Internet and communicate with no knowledge of

how these devices function to
connect with each other, said
Sean Kutso, a member of the Amateur Radio Relay League, the national association for Amateur
Radio. But if theres an interruption of service or youre out of
range of a cell phone tower, you
have no way to communicate.
Ham radio functions completely
independently of the Internet or
cell phone infrastructure, can interface with tablets or smartphones and can be set up almost
anywhere in minutes. Thats the
beauty of amateur radio during a
communication outage.
For more than 100 years, amateur radio has allowed people
from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communication techniques, as well as
provide a free public service to
their communities during a disaster, all without needing a cell
phone or the Internet.
Over the years, as communication has changed, public service
has become one of the most popular facets of amateur radio that
attracts practitioners.
Amateur radio operators,
using battery- or generator-powered equipment, often provide essential communications services
when regular channels are unavailable due to natural disaster
or other disruptive events.
We are the first group able to
set up and get going during disasters because our radios support
themselves by using generators
instead of radio towers that typically go down during severe disasters, Holben said.
The Burlington County group
was instrumental during Hurricane Katrina. It became an adjunct of the Red Cross to assist

people who wanted to know how

their loved ones were doing.
Holben got involved with radio
many years ago after he graduated from high school in 1942. He
went on to serve in the Navy
where he would be sent to radio
school because of his unique skill
set.
Now a resident of Medford,
Holben got into the Burlington
County Radio Club after he
moved to the area from Pennsylvania and was contacted by a few
guys in the club.
Its a hobby for people in the
community who like to operate
radios, Holben said.
He is one of the original people
who set up the radio station on
the Battleship New Jersey.
The Burlington County Radio
Club now holds many of its activities on the ship, including multiple weekends where the guys
come out for picnics and get introduced to different techniques by
testing antennas.
The main objective of this
group and its field day event is to
advance the techniques of radio
communication and to continually try to improve equipment to get
further distances and more clarity.
Its interesting when you stop
to think about it 80 percent of
all electronic developments over
the years like cell phones and
things of that nature were developed by amateur radios, Holben
said.
