DiagnosticConsiderations
Pregnantwomenwithmildtomoderatemitralstenosiscanalmostalwaysbemanagedwithjudicioususeof
diureticsandbetablockade.
Pregnantwomenwithseveremitralstenosiswhoaresymptomaticbeforeconceptionwillnotpredictablytolerate
thehemodynamicburdenofpregnancyandshouldbeconsideredforpercutaneousballoonmitralvalvotomy
beforeconceptionprovidedthevalveisanatomicallysuitable.
PatientswithseveremitralstenosiswhodevelopNYHAfunctionalclassIIIIVsymptomsduringpregnancy
shouldundergopercutaneousballoonvalvotomy.
Otherconditionstobeconsideredinpatientswithsuspectedmitralstenosisincludethefollowing:
CorTriatriatum
Leftatrialmyxoma
Ballvalvethrombus
Endocarditis
Massivemitralannularcalcification
