Castrol Elixion

Synthetic Diesel Engine Oil

Castrol Elixion, a revolutionary SAE 5W-30 synthetic engine oil, is
formulated with a polyalphaolephin (PAO) engineered base fluid
that is free from wax, metals and sulfur.
PAO base fluids are known for their extremely low pour points and
high viscosity indexes of 140 or better. A high viscosity index gives the
finished lubricant optimum viscosity over a range of temperatures, as
well as wear protection during extreme high and low temperatures.
Castrol Elixion has been engineered to provide users with the
following benefits:
Operational Cost Savings
Castrol Elixion has been specially designed to give fuel economy
savings while protecting the engine and allowing extended service
intervals. Reviewing the total operating costs of a fleet, it is easy
to see where most dollars are spent. Fuel is the biggest variable
operating cost for truck fleets today. The combined cost of lubricants,
maintenance and tires does not equal the cost to fuel a fleets vehicles.

Castrol Elixion is proven to give your fleet fuel economy savings of up

to 4% over conventional oils.

Castrol Elixion (contd)

By using Castrol Elixion, a fleet can lower fuel bills by reducing

fuel consumption.
Enhanced Engine Durability
Castrol Elixion is the first SAE 5W-30 engine oil to meet the latest
industry specification, API CJ-4. In fact, it exceeds API CJ-4 limits with
outstanding wear protection as evidenced by the wear chart below. In
the industrys toughest wear tests, Castrol Elixion falls well below the
API CJ-4 limit proving that this 5W-30 engine oil can control soot and
deposits in heavy-duty engines and promote long engine life.

Excellent Shear Stability

There are many powerful forces at work in an engine that could
potentially shear down a lubricant and cause it to lose viscosity.
Viscosity loss is incredibly detrimental to an engine, as it can
potentially cause premature wear and lead to engine failure.
Castrol Elixions carefully crafted formulation gives it exceptional
shear stability that is better than that of conventional mineral oil
formulations and guards against permanent viscosity loss.

Castrol Elixion (contd)

All-Temperature Engine Protection

Castrol Elixion offers all-temperature protection for engines. Its base
oil properties afford it a very low pour point for cold temperature
wear protection, while safeguarding the engine against excessive oil
thinning or thickening during very high operating temperatures and
pressures. Castrol Elixion offers cold temperature protection down to
44F versus 22F for conventional engine oils.
Proven Reduced Emissions
When you switch to Castrol Elixion, your fleet will emit less harmful
CO2 as a result of decreased fuel consumption. For example, running a
fleet of 100 trucks with Castrol Elixion and gaining just a 3%
improvement in fuel economy can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 513
tons as compared to using a conventional 15W-40 engine oil.**
Furthermore, Castrol Elixion has proved to produce significantly less ash
forming deposits. This ensures that Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs)
remain cleaner and more efficient which can help lengthen regeneration
cycles and prevent early and costly replacement.
**Based on a fleet of 100 trucks each covering 100,000 miles a year
with average fuel consumption of 6.5 mpg and 3% fuel savings

CASTROL ELIXION
CASTROL ELIXION is a technologically advanced fully synthetic
diesel engine oil engineered to reduce operating costs while
providing outstanding engine protection. CASTROL ELIXION offers
the fuel economy benefits of a 5W-30 engine oil and combines it with

Castrol Hypuron

Castrol Hypuron redefines the standard for super high performance

diesel engine oils for on- and off-road equipment of all ages. Castrol
Hypuron has been uniquely formulated to meet the demanding needs
of diesel power units regardless of the equipments application. Castrol
Hypuron offers maximum engine protection and the associated cost
efficiencies of safely extending drains. It is distinctively capable of
delivering these results by utilizing a Castrol-engineered additive
package, while exceeding API CJ-4 requirements.

Real World Testing

Castrol Hypuron has undergone 8 million miles of over-the-road (OTR),
less-than-truckload (LTL) and vocational (refuse and cement mixers)
testing, all with low sulfur diesel fuel (LSD) (500 ppm) fuel. These tests
confirm that Castrol Hypuron provides maximum protection for power
units while safely extending drain capabilities of up to 2 times that of
OEM recommendations.*
Castrol Hypuon far exceeds the demands of current diesel engine oil
specification API CJ-4 and CI-4 Plus as well as those of Caterpillar,
Cummins, Detroit Diesel, MACK, Daimler-Chrysler, Volvo and others.

The Semi-Synthetic Advantage (P.T.O.)

At the core of any high performance diesel engine oil is the base
stock. Castrol Hypuron starts with semi-synthetic base oils to provide
natural advantages over traditional mineral base oils.
Improved deposit control
Better soot management
Improved wear protection
Better low temperature performance
Improved volatility
Better oxidation control
Castrol Hypuron combines semi-synthetic base stocks with a unique
formula, which helps deliver the performance to all allow up to 2
times OEM drains.

Total Base Number (TBN)

Before the advent of wide scale use of ULSD fuels, TBN additives
were raised in lubricant formulations to counteract the corrosive
affects caused by higher sulfur fuels. With the introduction of ULSD
(15 ppm) the common belief is that a higher TBN formulation is not as
critical as it once was. However, in meeting the new environmental
regulations, engine manufacturers are increasing their EGR from
approximately 15% to up to 45% meaning that exhaust gas that is
recirculated back into the engine is a major source of acidity in the
engine. Therefore, TBN is still required.
TBN remains critical in order to control potentially harmful corrosive
acids created by EGR and the sulfur in the fuel.

1 800 255 4417

www.castrol.com/us
rev GB-245-09

Castrol Hypuron (contd)

Field trials with Castrol Hypuron start with a high TBN of 11 and
maintain excellent TBN retention during the service. TBN is important
in todays newer on-road engines and is an important component of
Castrol Hypurons ability to offer extended drain capabilities, and the
associated operational cost savings with extending drains up to 2 times.

Low SAPS Advantage

As well as compatibility with diesel particulate filters, low SAPS oils
(Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulfur) offer benefits such as piston
cleanliness.
To explore Castrols stance on low sulfated ash soot handling
chemistry, Castrol sought the help of a third party source. This source
recovered extensive data from hundreds of Caterpillar 1K tests,
comprising numerous formulations with varying sulfated ash levels.

This shows the key performance parameters of the Cat 1K expressed

as a percent of pass rates (API CI-4 Plus level) for both high and low
ash oils.

Castrol Hypuron (contd)

Remember, this chart represents not just one test result, but the
average of hundreds of tests taken over a 10 year period.
TLC, TGF, oil consumption all have significantly higher pass
rates with low ash oils, especially TGF.
This graph demonstrates that in the critical upper piston area,
low ash oils provide superior performance.
The evidence is clear that the low sulfated ash chemistry of Castrol
Hypuron results in lower piston deposits. For a companys engines
and bottom line, this means:
Reduced cylinder scuffing
Optimal piston ring performance
Less oil consumption
Extended drain capacity (if monitored by used oil analysis)
Longer engine life

Oxidation Control
Viscosity control is not only important in the presence of soot,
but also in the presence of oxidation. The process of oxidation is
accelerated by heat, light, water, acids or solid contaminants. Most
of these accelerants are generated by EGR systems. If not properly
controlled, oxidation will cause rapid viscosity increases, sludge,
gumming and, in some cases, engine failure.
Castrol Hypuron performance for oxidation is exceptional due to its
semi-synthetic base stocks and robust chemistry.

Shear Stability
Todays tighter piston-to-liner clearances and powerful forces of piston
rings in motion cause permanent viscosity loss or shear in an engine
oil. This can lead to decreased film strength and increased wear and
oil consumption. The exceptional shear control of Castrol Hypuron
correlates to consistent film strength and wear protection with
minimal oil consumption throughout the drain.
Castrols radial polymer, found in the viscosity improver, is the reason
Castrol Hypuron can stay-in-grade better than other engine oils. Many
engine oils use viscosity improvers that employ long chain polymers.
Once the shearing forces within an engine attack a long chain
polymer, permanent viscosity loss is likely. Once viscosity is lost, oil
thinning, reduced film strength and increased oil consumption can
raise maintenance costs and decrease component life.

1 800 255 4417

www.castrol.com/us
rev GB-245-09

Castrol Hypuron (contd)

Castrols radial polymer, when subjected to the same shearing forces

within an engine, can withstand these forces. Even if several arms
of the polymer break away, the molecular structure stays intact. This
means that Castrol Hypuron will continue to protect the engine and
maintain proper film strength to guard against wear.
The industry standard for API CJ-4 is 90 passes through the Kurt
Orbahn Shear Stability Test. Castrol found that 150 passes better
represents the shearing that is actually taking place in the field. The
accompanying graph shows that Castrol Hypuron has less viscosity
loss due to shearing than other API CJ-4 products.

The shear stability of Castrol Hypuron correlates to:

Consistent film strength throughout the drain
Reduced oil consumption
Longer engine life
Lower cost per mile

Unmatched Proof of Performance
Castrol Hypurons new formula has been run through one of the most
extensive series of testing ever, and in each area has surpassed the
requirements.
Castrol Hypuron has been tested in Cummins, Caterpillar, Mack,
Detroit Diesel, Volvo and Mercedes equipment. This is just a summary
of how it performed against established limits in the areas lined.

Deposits
Carbon and soot deposits are critical in modern diesel engines. Castrol
Hypuron keeps these deposits away in the sensitive areas better than
the limits required by up to 90%.

Oil Consumption
Oil consumption is a result of wear, deposits and oil burn off.
Castrol Hypuron controls all these areas to minimize oil consumption
significantly more than established limits.

Castrol Tection Extra

Regardless of the fleets age, Castrol Tection Extra has been

re-engineered to exceed the needs of all the equipment in a fleet,
and it offers maximum engine protection and reduced soot-related
wear through Castrols boosted dispersancy formulation.

API CJ-4 and Low Ash Technology

Continuing in Castrol Tection Extras tradition of maintaining its Low
Ash Technology for few piston deposits and reduced cylinder scuffing,
Castrol Tection Extra also exceeds the API CJ-4 specification that
dictates low ash formulations to prevent the premature clogging of
the exhaust aftertreatment Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).
Castrol Tection Extra helps fleet managers rest easy knowing that
regardless of an equipments age, Castrol Tection Extras low ash
technology is delivering these benefits for their business:
Reduced cylinder scuffing
Optimal piston ring performance
Longer engine life
Less oil consumption

A Premium Base Stock for Superior Performance

Castrol has been formulating high performance diesel engine oils for
more than 100 years.
Using Group II hydroisomerised base stock allows Castrol to provide
the premium protection engines require including:
Better soot management
Improved wear protection
Better oxidation control
The end result is a stable, high-performance base stock that provides
the foundation for the advanced chemistry used in Castrol Tection Extra.

Engineered for Maximum Soot Management

Castrol Tection Extra API CJ-4 formula has been boosted with more
active dispersancy to better manage damaging soot which accelerates
engine wear. Soot, if not managed properly, forms abrasive particles
that wear away vital engine components such as camshaft lobes,
pistons, piston rings, cylinder walls and all critical metal-to-metal
contact surfaces, and leads to premature engine failure.
The Mack T-11A test is the API CJ-4 industry standard to evaluate an
oils ability to prevent excessive viscosity with elevated levels of soot.
The Mack T-11A engine test is used to show the viscosity control at
high soot levels, with a higher number showing poorer soot control.

Wear Protection in the Presence of Soot

Maintaining wear protection and engine durability in the presence of
heavily sooted engines is the performance criterion for API CJ-4 oils.
While the Cummins ISM is used for the API CJ-4 benchmark testing
for soot, Cummins is not alone in their concern in managing soot
levels within their engines. All major OEMs share this concern of
soot-related wear and corrosion that is a result of even higher
percentages of EGR that promotes an environment in which
acids are created.
Castrols results show that Castrol Tection Extra, contaminated with
soot, delivers superior wear protection for EGR-equipped engines.

Castrol Engineers Push the Limits

After Castrol Tection Extra successfully completed the Cummins ISM
API CJ-4 test that resulted in far lower wear than the specification
allowed, and as part of the Castrol culture to exceed the specifications
with its quality products, Castrols technology team continued to
challenge Castrol Tection Extras new formulation and ran the engine

Castrol Tection Extra (contd)

for an additional 200 hours for a total of 400 hours, twice what the
specification required. Even after doubling the stringent Cummins ISM
testing criteria, Castrol Tection Extra still demonstrated wear levels
below that of the original 200 hour API CJ-4 limits.
The API CJ-4 Cummins ISM engine test is used to demonstrate wear
due to soot in the oil at 400 hours.

Oxidation Control
Castrol Tection Extra Group II base stocks are not only important in
the superior handling of soot, but also in providing oxidation control.
The process of oxidation is accelerated by heat, light, water, acids or
solid contaminants. Most of these accelerants are generated by EGR
systems. It not properly controlled, oxidation will cause rapid viscosity
increases, sludge, gumming and ins some cases engine failure.
