you have purchased more than one conferencing option, you must meet
the highest set of requirements.
Before beginning the installation process, refer to Appendix A of this
guide to review the specific system requirements for your conferencing
options and operating system.

Installation Guide

Configuring the Server Computer for LearnLinc

The server computer on which you plan to install LearnLinc must be
properly configured before you begin your LearnLinc Server installation.
Make sure that you:
Install Windows NT Server (and Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack) or
Windows 2000 Server on the server computer. Refer to your
Microsoft documentation for complete installation directions.
Install PowerPoint 97 or 2000 from the Microsoft Office software
suite on the server computer. Important! Be sure to enable web
page authoring at the server level. Refer to your Microsoft Office
documentation for complete installation instructions.

Installing the LearnLinc Server

NOTE: Complete and return the LearnLinc Server Key faxback form at least one business day before you plan to install
your LearnLinc Server.
1. Log-in to the Windows NT or Windows 2000 Server as an

administrator.
2. Insert the LearnLinc Server CD in your servers CD-ROM drive. The

Server Installation Options screen displays.

3. Click Install LearnLinc Server. A warning dialog displays, informing

you that the your web server must be stopped to continue with the
installation.
4. Click Yes to stop the web server. The Welcome screen displays.

5. Click Next. The Software License Agreement screen appears.

6. Click Yes to accept. The User Information screen displays.
7. Enter your name, company, and LearnLinc serial number. You can find

your LearnLinc serial number on the back of the LearnLinc server

jewel case, and on the inside front cover of the LearnLinc Advanced
Guide.
8. Click Next. The Choose Destination Location screen displays.
9. Click Browse to select a different location, or click Next to continue.
The Enter server information screen displays.

Installing LearnLinc
10. Enter the address and port for the server you are working on.

The address is the sever name. For example,

www.xyzlearning.com or the IP Address of the server.
The port is the firewall port through which the server
components will send and receive LearnLinc data. By default
the port is 80, which is the HTTP port (the web port).
NOTE: Most organizations have port 80 open already to
enable Internet or intranet traffic. If you change the port to a
different number, you will have to open that port number on
your firewall for LearnLinc to work properly.
The Enter Virtual Directory screen displays.
11. If desired, enter a virtual directory name for the LearnLinc Virtual

Campus and click Next.

The virtual directory is the directory in which all HTML and other
related files for the Virtual Campus are stored. Your users will enter
this directory name after the address of the LearnLinc server to
access the Virtual Campus. For example, if your server is
www.xyzlearning.com and the Virtual Campus virtual directory is
learnlinc, your users would enter
http://www.xyzlearning.com/learnlinc in their web browsers to
access the Virtual Campus.
Do not leave the virtual directory field blank unless you want to
install the Virtual Campus to the root directory. Doing so redirects
users who navigate to the server to the LearnLinc Virtual Campus.
The Administrative Account screen displays. By default, a local
administrative account is displayed on screen.
12. Use the displayed account, or enter information for a different

administrator account for this server, and click Next.

You must enter the information for a local administrator account for
the server. The LearnLinc installer must have administrator
permissions to add information to the servers registry and add files
to your server.
13. Review the information in the Start Copying Files screen, and click

Next to begin the installation.

14. When the Setup Complete screen displays, select Yes, I want to

restart my computer now and click Finish to restart.

Installation Guide

Enabling your Server Licenses

You may have one or several license keys to enable, depending on the
conferencing options you have purchased.
1. If you have not yet done so, return the LearnLinc Server Key fax-back
form to LearnLinc Customer Service to get your license keys. You can
expect a response within one business day.
If you opt to receive your license keys via email, copy each
Registry file (.reg) to a temporary directory on the server hard
drive. Double-click each file to update the registry automatically.
If you opt to receive your license keys on diskette via postal mail,
insert the diskette in the servers floppy drive. Double-click each
Registry file on the disk to automatically update the registry.
2. Reboot the server to enable all licenses.
Checking your Server Licenses
1. Launch a web browser on the server or another computer.
2. Navigate to http://servername/ll/ll.dll/ServerInfo, where servername
is the name of your LearnLinc server.
WARNING: If you are using a virtual directory for the Virtual
Campus, do not include it in the servername portion of the
URL. Also, do not append .htm after ServerInfo.
The LearnLinc Server Information page displays.
3. Scroll down to the entry Classroom Service Licenses. Your licenses
are listed by conferencing type. You can see the total for each type,
the number currently in use, and the expiration date for each license
type.

Installing LearnLinc

Distributing the Client

We provide several options for downloading the LearnLinc Client from
the Virtual Campus web site, including typical, advanced, and custom.
To determine which installer to distribute, consider which conferencing
options your organization has purchased, and the content delivery
methods you plan to employ:
The Typical client installs the LearnLinc class tools, conferencing,
application sharing, the Classroom Player, and help files; without
multimedia support.
The Advanced client installs the LearnLinc class tools with
conferencing, multimedia, application sharing support, the
Classroom Recorder, and LearnLinc help files.
The Custom client setup enables you to choose the components
you wish to install.
NOTE: Instructions for installing the client from the Virtual
Campus can be found on your LearnLinc Server CD in the
folder docs\install.doc. You can modify these instructions to
match your download page, and then distribute them to your
users before their first classes.
Modifying the Virtual Campus Download Page
By default, the Virtual Campus download page lists all the available
download options. You can modify the download page to display only
the option or options you want your students to install:
1. Determine which installation options you want to keep on the page
and which you want to remove.
2. Locate the Virtual Campus directory on the LearnLinc server. By
default the files are located in C:\Program
Files\LearnLinc\LearnLincServer\LLWeb.
3. Select the page download.asp and open it in a text editor, such as
Notepad. Remove the links to any unwanted install options.
Please see Modifying the Virtual Campus Download Page in chapter
6 of the LearnLinc Advanced Guide for detailed instructions on
removing links from the download page.

Installation Guide

Preparing your Users to Take Classes

The final step in installing and configuring your LearnLinc system is
preparing your users to take LearnLinc classes. To do so, each user must
install the LearnLinc client software, have a LearnLinc user account, and
know which courses to register for and which classes to take.
Before you can properly instruct your users, you must make certain
decisions about your LearnLinc environment. You must decide:
which version of the LearnLinc client installation to make available
on the Virtual Campus download page (see previous section).
if students can create their own accounts via the Virtual Campus or
if you will create all user accounts.
If you will register students for courses (once they have user
accounts) or if they will register for courses themselves.
Once you have made these decisions, provide instructions for your
users to help them prepare for their first class. We have included two
documents on the LearnLinc Server CD in the docs folder that you can
modify and distribute to your users.
Your first LearnLinc class (memo.doc) describes the process of
creating an account, logging-in to the Virtual Campus, installing the
client software, and joining a class.
Installing the LearnLinc client (install.doc) provides detailed
instructions for downloading and installing the LearnLinc client
from the web.
