Welcome to my portfolio.
This is a selcetion of work that I have been
producing the last year.
My name is Markella Hadjijoseph, I am from
Cyprus and I am currenlty living in London.
I am a graduate student in Graphic Design
and Photography at Kingston University.
Currently I am studying at London College
of Communication MA Publishing.
Political and social issues, such as the ongoing
economic crisis in both Cyprus and Europe
as a whole, as well as its impact on local
populations, informs my practice. The desire
of exploration drives my work towards an ongoing journey of discovering a story, a fact, a
material, a process or an image. The subject
matter of each body of work determines the
materials and the form of the work, which
varies between photography, live projects
and publishing.

A visual brand identity project which includes redesigning the logo for a Cypriot non-profit organisation
that focuses on youth enterprise support.

A coffee house is traditionally

considered to be a cultural meeting
place at which Cypriots come
together to discuss and spend their
place is more than that. It is also
a meeting point at which ordinary
people meet to discuss their personal
worries and exchange opinions in
relation to the economic and social
crisis that the island is under for the
that predominantly supports youth
and innovative ideas that will aid the
country towards development.

It was created to offer help to

interviews, and helping them write

their CVs. Moreover, it offers help
to individuals who want to start
off their own business or ones that
already have one and need support
with their marketing and promoting
skills, their personal management
and any future collaborations. All
services are provided free in the
form of seminars and events, faceto-face or one to one meetings.

HERE IS CYPRUS
A photographic publication exploring the Cypriot government
and its indifference to the sustainment of recreation centers
which contributed to the islands cultural development. The
content included in the publication varies between historical
facts, articles and interviews.

Situated at the center of Nicosia, the Buffer zones are a constant

traumatic reminder of the 1974 invasion, a time at which individuals
lost their properties.

Tivoli Luna Park re-opened its doors in South Nicosia in 1976,

which prior to the 1974 invasion was located in North Nicosia. It
was the only Luna Park found in Cyprus, and was shut down in
2012.

Berengaria Hotel was one of the oldest recreation centers that

was shut down in 1984.

IS IT A DREAM?
A set of images investigating the influence of illicit drugs on
dream content. LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) floods the
nervous system with serotonin and results in hallucinations
involving all the senses-visual, olfactory, gustatory, and tactile.
This phenomenon is quite different from the hallucinations
associated with schizophrenia, but in terms of biological
responses it is the closest thing to a dream-like experience
a person can have without being asleep. The images were
produced and constructed by white powder in a photographic
studio after asking a LSD user to describe his experience.

We live on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

Within an alluring movement of the dust one is suspended in a
time of limbo, when nothing matters although everything does.

GREENPEACE
A live campaign project raising awareness about the
destruction of 80% of the rainforest, by providing the public
with an opportunity to rebuilt the rainforest.

THE PREPARATION BOOK

A publication created in order to prepare first year students
about the course of Graphic Design and Photography at
Kingston University. The content included was gathered from
current students of the course based on what individuals wish
they knew before entering the course.

A photographic body of work depicting the immobile moment
at which the actors transform into their fictional characters.The

LA MANIFESTO
This publication comprises a collection of sharing opinions in
order to to create a new source of design manifestos. One is
invited to take a manifesto and also make their own in order to
add to the collection. Further it is asked to create an emblem
which represents the spirit of the manifesto.

Playing a game such

An anti-campaign focusing on how buzzwords are used
in advertising, whilst overlooking to mention the harmful
substances that come aside.

Most sugar-free products use ar tificial sweeteners like aspar tame.
These have been linked to Alzheimers, Parkinsons disease and
depression.Sweets and carbohydrates are often the first thing we reach
for when were down, so they are often a significant factor in weight gain
Sweeteners have been shown to decrease serotonin in our brains,
dropping our moods and making us feel flat.

Energy drinks contain the electrolytes you need to replenish after an
intense workout. However, they contain a lot of sugar, caffeine and calories
that are just not wor th drinking unless youre really going to be able to
work them off.

THEN WHY BELIEVE A BUZZWORD THAT OMITS THE WHOLE TRUTH?

Fresh indicates the age of a food. Since taste is subjective, food
companies can get away with claiming something is fresh-tasting
even if it has been frozen or on the shelf for some time. So how do
you define fresh?

HIDDEN
A reflection of the multifaceted relationship between
a personal assistant and a person with disabilities. The
photographic work highlights the hidden aspects of their

The exchange between human beings, the fun memories, the feeling of satisfaction by giving, having a friend or even having to accept a person
was never what I imagined this job would be like. Sometimes when people look at me they smile like I am doing something that makes me a
hero. I dont like it when they treat me as a hero. I even dont like that people think Simon is invisible or act like he is an object. They feel pity for
him and for me because Im helping someone. People think that my work is extremely admirable, but I am not better than him.We have worked
together for three months and know each other better now. Having a good connection with him is very important because he cant speak. I
believe its a healthy relationship because you have the right to express your feeling, even if you are angry. Our relationship is based on trust,
understanding and respect.

Creating a place with something we see everyday. A landscape
obscurely abstracted to a level that it takes time to realize what
the viewer is looking at.

CYANOTYPES | BLUEPRINTS
A photographic body of work that draws on parallels between
the distinctive process of cyanotype making, and the distinctive
relationships that I have developed with all six individuals
depicted, within the last three years.
