Aspen Plus
Product Description
Aspen Plus is the AspenTech state-of-the-art steady-state simulation system
that can be used for modeling a variety of industrial processes including
chemical, petrochemical, energy, metals, and refining. Aspen Plus contains a
comprehensive library of unit operation models and allows you to easily plug
in proprietary custom models. In addition, Aspen Plus provides full Windows
interoperability to facilitate the process and design engineers work processes.
Aspen Plus with the Aspen Plus Optimizer and Aspen OnLine modules provides
the framework to make optimization (including closed loop real-time
optimization) a natural extension to simulation, process control, and decision
making. Aspen Plus automatically installs and works with the following
separately licensed sub-products:
Aspen Distillation Synthesis, formerly the Aspen Split feature in Aspen
Plus, allows you to construct ternary maps and do azeotrope searches on
multi-component mixtures, as well as use the ConSep unit operation
model for distillation design.
Aspen Rate-Based Distillation, formerly Aspen RateSep, allows you to
perform rate-based distillation calculations using the RadFrac unit
operation model.
Aspen Plus Optimizer allows you to perform optimization calculations in
the equation-oriented environment.
Aspen Polymers allows you to model processes involving polymers and
oligomers. It includes databases, property methods and models, and
reaction kinetics models required to simulate polymerization reactors and
processing plants.
Aspen Plus Dynamics, which enables dynamic simulation. This product is
installed with the Advanced options.
Aspen Plus is a mixed simulation and optimization environment supporting
both sequential modular and equation-oriented solution techniques for
process flowsheets.
13
Engineering Enhancements
Aspen Plus now reports CO2 equivalents for greenhouse gases produced
by each unit operation block, those emitted by utilities used, and totals for
the overall process, as well as the carbon fee/tax for emissions. See
Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the help for details about this feature.
It is now possible to use Utilities in HeatX blocks with the Rigorous
methods, only in Design and Rating calculation types.
Three new mass transfer and interfacial area correlations for packings
have been added for use in Aspen Rate-Based Distillation. HanleyPall
(2010) models Pall rings, HanleyIMTP (2010) models IMTP, CMR, and ETA rings, and HanleyStruc (2010) models sheet metal structured
packings.
15
RadFrac, PetroFrac, and MultiFrac will now allow you to specify a column
diameter in rating calculations as small as 0.01 m. Previously the
minimum was 0.1 m. This will allow you to more easily model laboratoryscale columns.
Pressure relief calculations have been improved to make them more
accurate (see Compatibility Notes for details).
It is now possible to use an RPlug model without reactions (for instance,
to model heat flux in detail).
In RPlug reactors with solids, you can now specify a solid holdup profile
when you specify the liquid holdup profile. In this case the reaction rates
in vapor, liquid, and solid phases are all affected by the portion of the
reactor occupied by those phases.
The Dryer model can now remove water from NC substreams in which it is
specified via the Moisture specification of the PROXANAL attribute, when
water is specified as a moisture component. It does not operate on any
other moisture components in NC substreams.
The Pump model now has options for its vapor check in the same way the
Compr model does for its liquid check. See the Pump | Setup |
Calculation Options sheet configure these options.
Common RXN_RCSTRR now contains catalyst data. This allows you to
access such data in user subroutines written for RCSTR blocks. See Aspen
Plus User Models for details.
Solids
It is now possible to use conventional inert solid components (specified as
Solid on the Components form) in the MIXED substream. This allows you to
perform simple solid modeling without the complication of using multiple
substreams.
Solid components with a particle size distribution still need to be used with
one of the substreams that contain a PSD attribute.
EO formulations of Mixer, Flash2, Flash3, Decanter, Pump, FSplit, SSplit,
Mult, Dupl, Selector and Streams support solids in the MIXED substream.
Other models in EO do not support solids in the MIXED substream, and
will issue a warning if they are found. (Depending on the properties
available for these components, they may lead to errors in the EO models
which do not support them, or may run but lead to inaccurate results.)
The SFRAC property represents the solid fraction within the MIXED
substream. Previously, this solid fraction consisted only of salts, but now it
may also include conventional inert solids.
The new CISOLID-COMPS paragraph in input language specifies which
components are declared as solids. It is required only if you use
components of type Solid in the MIXED substream.
Properly-specified backup files from previous versions (including those
embedded into .apw or .apwz files) will continue to work as they always
did, with all their solids in CISOLID substreams.
16
You can choose to put some of these solids into the MIXED substream and
some in the CISOLID substream. When you do so:
For most blocks, solids will remain in the substream in which they were
specified.
RStoic can be used to move solid components between the MIXED and
CISOLID substreams.
Solid products of REquil and RGibbs will be placed in the CISOLID
substream if it is present in the outlet stream, or the MIXED substream
otherwise.
17
Databank Updates
New APV73 database was created, containing new PURE25 databank
based on the January 2010 release of the DIPPR database. This databank
is similar to the PURE24 databank, but many parameters for a large
number of components have been updated, and 42 components have
been added.

The new NISTV73 database was created. The NIST-TRC databank has
been updated based on the June 2010 NIST SOURCE data archive; over
4000 more compounds have been added.
19
Chemistry
In Chemistry blocks you can now specify the equilibrium constants for
reactions based on a version of the van 't Hoff equation instead of the
expression which has been available in past versions. Additionally, there is
now a term for modeling the pressure dependence of the equilibrium
constant which can be used with either expression.
In Chemistry blocks you can now specify the reactive or inert components
instead of specifying reactions, and let the Aspen Physical Property
System use Gibbs energy minimization to compute the expected products
from among these components. With this option you do not specify any
reactions or equilibrium constants.
20
The activity coefficient basis for ionic components is now specified within
each Chemistry block rather than at the global level. This basis can also
be specified on the first screen of the Electrolyte Wizard.
Prop-Set Properties
New Prop-Set properties ISENEX, ISENEXMX (isentropic exponent or
isentropic coefficient) have been added.
21
Convergence
When using a Component Group to specify the components to be converged
in a tear stream, if there are components not defined in the component group
with non-zero flows of component attributes (such as solids with particle size
distributions, nonconventional components, and polymers) or if substreams
not defined in the component group have phase attributes, results in V7.3
may be different than previous versions. The difference is due to earlier
versions always attempting to converge the component or phase attributes,
even when the components are excluded by not being in the component
group.
22
Pressure Relief
The Darcy model, which is equivalent to the DIERS Homogeneous
Equilibrium flow model, is now the default frictional pressure drop
correlation in Pres-Relief for all orientations. Beggs-Brill remains the
default method for Pipe and Pipeline. This may result in different pressure
drop calculations for Pres-Relief blocks where two-phase flow exists and
the methods on the Convergence | Methods sheet were not specified.
To match results from previous versions, specify Beggs-Brill for all
orientations where a method was not previously specified.
When Darcy was specified for one of the frictional pressure drop
correlations in Pres-Relief, previous versions also allowed the
corresponding liquid holdup correlation to be specified, even though Darcy
does not use the liquid holdup correlation. Now this field is disabled when
Darcy is selected.
Shift+Page Up, Shift+Page Down, and Home now do Zoom In, Zoom
Out, and Zoom Full.
Page Up, Page Down, and the Mouse wheel now do Zoom In/Out by
small increments.
Shift + arrow keys now scrolls by big steps (previously done by Page
Up, Page Down, Home, and End).
The Pro/II file converter has been enhanced, and a number of conversion
issues have been fixed. You will observe the following changes relative to
Pro/II conversions with previous versions:
o
Multiple Pro/II components with the same key can now be properly
converted. All Pro/II components in the PURE24, SOLIDS, INORGANIC,
AQUEOUS, and NIST-TRC databanks are now converted.
23
When converting a Pro/II FLASH, zero pressure drop and duty are
properly set when these values are not specified, and variable
UPPERDEW is converted.
Solids
Mixture entropy for the CISOLID substream (and for inert solids in the MIXED
substream) is now calculated in the same way as entropies are calculated for
a mixture of salts in the MIXED substream, assuming they are pure
condensed species rather than solid solutions. This method is a simple moleaverage of the entropies for the individual solids/salts. Formerly, a term x ln x
was used for CISOLIDs, representing the formation of a solid solution. This
may show a large change in the calculated entropy value when multiple solid
components exist, but should not generally affect simulation results, since
models such as COMPR which depend on entropy are not normally fed with
solids.
Physical Properties
In V7.2, when using the new symmetric reference state for the activity
coefficients of ions, if no equilibrium constants were available for reactions
specified in Chemistry blocks, the Aspen Physical Property System
calculated equilibrium constants incorrectly. This has been corrected so
that these equilibrium constants are not calculated incorrectly; instead,
when using the symmetric reference state, the equilibrium constants are
now required (either directly input, or calculated via data regression).
In the Components section of the Report file, the Name or Alias and
Report Names columns have been replaced by a single Name column.
This makes this report consistent with the Components | Specifications
| Selection sheet in the user interface, where ID, Type, Name, and
Alias are shown.
24
25
Steam table method STMNBS2 was modified in two ways which may lead
to different results. The results of the previous version can be reproduced
by setting the value of option code 2 of STMNBS2 to 1 when it is called
directly, and to 0 when it is used as the free-water method in conjunction
with an equation of state, such as SRK.
o
A new option for option code 2 (value = 2) was added, which performs
the same rigorous fugacity calculations from Gibbs energy and
corrected enthalpy departure as value 1, but uses the Aspen Plus root
search method instead of the STMNBS2 root search method. This is
more robust and less likely to lead to flash failures where a real root
cannot be found.
Databanks
Five compounds in the NIST-TRC databank were updated with new names
for consistency with compounds added to or already existing in the
PURE25 databank in APV73:

Retired Features
The Case Study form is no longer shown in the Aspen Plus user interface.
Case Study is still available through input files and the Add-Input form,
and files from previous versions and input files containing Case Study
blocks will have them appear in Add-Input. The Cases feature of the
Sensitivity block is recommended as a more usable version of this
feature through the user interface.
Databanks PURE856, PURE93, PURE10, and AQU92 are no longer
delivered. These are superseded by AQUEOUS and later versions of PURE
which include more recent data from DIPPR and other sources.
o
Each of these databanks is from a version of Aspen Plus more than ten
years old. They were intended only for users who require complete
compatibility with results from previous versions. Because most users
have now updated their simulations to newer database versions, these
old versions are being dropped to reduce the size of the database
delivered with each installation.
When you open files which reference these databanks, the Upward
Compatibility dialog box will appear. An option at the bottom of the
dialog box lets you choose to either Upgrade retired databanks or
Keep retired databanks. Choosing upgrade replaces PURE856,
PURE93, and PURE10 with PURE25, and replaces AQU92 with
AQUEOUS. The keep option requires a database containing the retired
databanks, and is not available when using the legacy databank
system.
27
Features to be Retired
Compaq Visual Fortran 6.6 runtime libraries. These libraries have been
delivered for several versions while Aspen Plus has been built with Intel
Fortran in order to support user Fortran models built with the older
compiler, but this is the last version in which they will be included. In
future versions, in order to run Fortran compiled by the Compaq compiler
on a computer which does not have this compiler installed, you will need
to install these libraries separately. See the documentation for the
compiler.
OLE paste links (the live, updating link to a data value in Aspen Plus
created when it is copied and pasted into an application which can support
such links, such as Microsoft Excel) will no longer be supported in the next
version. It will still be possible to copy and paste data, but without the live
link. This mechanism has been the source of problems, including slow
copy and paste of large amounts of data. There are other techniques (OLE
automation and Aspen Simulation Workbook) to link models to Excel and
other applications, and these techniques will remain available.
In the next version, it will no longer be possible to create custom forms
for custom models, nor use previously created custom forms.
In the next version, the Feedbl unit operation will be removed from the
Model Library. This model was used with RT-Opt version 10.0 to create
material feed streams. It is not necessary in Aspen Plus, but was provided
to maintain compatibility.
Export of the flowsheet drawing as a DXF file will be removed in the next
version.
PFD mode (which lets you make an alternate version of the process
flowsheet to depict equipment in the plant not modeled in the simulation)
will be removed in a future version.

The new NISTV73 database was created. The NIST-TRC databank has
been updated based on the June 2010 NIST SOURCE data archive; over
4000 more compounds have been added.
Chemistry
In Chemistry blocks you can now specify the equilibrium constants for
reactions based on a version of the van 't Hoff equation instead of the
expression which has been available in past versions. Additionally, there is
now a term for modeling the pressure dependence of the equilibrium
constant which can be used with either expression.
35
In Chemistry blocks you can now specify the reactive or inert components
instead of specifying reactions, and let the Aspen Physical Property
System use Gibbs energy minimization to compute the expected products
from among these components. With this option you do not specify any
reactions or equilibrium constants.
Compatibility Notes
Aspen Properties V7.3 can be installed and used at the same time as V7.2 and
other previous versions of Aspen Properties.
This section describes the differences that you might encounter between
Aspen Properties V7.3 and Aspen Properties V7.2. In most cases, previous
Aspen Properties input files and backup files are completely compatible with
Aspen Properties V7.3. AspenTech makes every effort to avoid making
changes that result in incompatibilities with previous versions. The changes
discussed in this section were necessary to correct problems, to implement
new features, or to improve ease-of-use.
The most important areas where you might encounter differences between
Aspen Properties V7.3 and earlier versions are:
36
Databanks
Five compounds in the NIST-TRC databank were updated with new names
for consistency with compounds added to or already existing in the
PURE25 databank in APV73:
Alias
F3P
TRIFLUOROPHOSPHINE PHOSPHORUS-TRIFLUORIDE
7783-55-3
C3H8N2O
N,N*-DIMETHYLUREA
96-31-1
1,3-DIMETHYL-UREA
CAS Number
C4H3F7O-N1 C4H3F7O-N1
HEPTAFLUOROPROPYL-METHYL- 375-03-1
ETHER
C9H8O4-N2
MONOMETHYL-TEREPHTHALATE 1679-64-7
C9H8O4-N2
H2-PARA
HYDROGEN-PARA
(was H2-N1)
HYDROGEN,-DIATOMIC,-PARA
Chemistry
In V7.2, when using the new symmetric reference state for the activity
coefficients of ions, if no equilibrium constants were available for reactions
specified in Chemistry blocks, the Aspen Physical Property System calculated
equilibrium constants incorrectly. This has been corrected so that these
equilibrium constants are not calculated incorrectly; instead, when using the
symmetric reference state, the equilibrium constants are now required (either
directly input, or calculated via data regression).
Reports
In the Components section of the Report file, the Name or Alias and
Report Names columns have been replaced by a single Name column. This
makes this report consistent with the Components | Specifications |
Selection sheet in the user interface, where ID, Type, Name, and Alias are
shown.
37
Prop-Set Properties
Calculations for sonic velocity (SONVEL and SONVELMX Prop-Set
properties) have been corrected for phase L when there are two liquid
phases. In addition, there is a new warning printed when calculating CV,
CVMX, CPCV, CPCVMX, SONVEL, SONVELMX, ISENEX, and ISENEXMX
when the liquid volume model is not pressure-dependent (as is the case
with the Rackett model). With these models, the dV/dP contribution for CV
is not calculated because the liquid volume model always provides a zero.
Another model such as COSTALD or an equation-of-state should be used
to calculate these properties.
Calculations for the Prop-Set properties that calculate apparent flow rates
and fractions (FAPP, TFAPP, TWAPP, WAPP, WXAPP, XAPP and their "2"
variants) now strictly obey the phase qualifier. This results in differences
relative to past versions when solid salts exist in the stream. Previously,
these solid salts were considered in the liquid phase calculations, as is
done in the stream calculations for the apparent approach. These
properties can now be calculated for all phases, including Total and Vapor;
vapor returns just the true concentration since we do not allow ions in the
vapor. Total includes Vapor; when there is no vapor, it should reproduce
the values calculated for Liquid in previous versions.
Property Models
When no molar volume VLCONS is entered for the Liquid Constant Liquid
Molar Volume, it now uses the General Pure Component Liquid Molar
Volume model instead of the constant value of 1. This model is used in the
Solids Handling Property Method used for systems where the solid
properties are most important. You will see different (generally better)
results when using this model and VLCONS is not entered for some liquid
components. Also, in cases where neither VLCONS nor the parameters for
the General model (usually TC, PC, and RKTZRA for the Rackett equation)
are available, you will encounter errors about the missing data. Enter a
reasonable value for VLCONS or for parameters for the General model
when this happens. You can enter 1 for VLCONS to restore the results
from previous versions.
In past versions, some models using the dirty-water method in sequentialmodular calculations incorrectly used the free-water phase entropy and
volume. The equation-oriented calculations used the correct dirty-water
calculation. This problem is now fixed. You may observe small differences
from previous versions in these properties in dirty-water sequentialmodular calculations.
The evaluation feature of the standard Data Regression (Properties |
Regression | Input | Setup sheet, option Evaluation) has been
improved for VLE with 3 or more components and for LLE. Now a flash is
performed to ensure results will be consistent with results obtained by
other methods. The results of this evaluation will be different than in past
versions for these cases, but they should be more accurate.
38
Retired Features
Choosing upgrade replaces PURE856,
PURE93, and PURE10 with PURE25, and replaces AQU92 with
AQUEOUS. The keep option requires a database containing the retired
databanks, and is not available when using the legacy databank
system.
39
Features to be Retired
Compaq Visual Fortran 6.6 runtime libraries. These libraries have been
delivered for several versions while Aspen Properties has been built with
Intel Fortran in order to support user Fortran models built with the older
compiler, but this is the last version in which they will be included. In
future versions, in order to run Fortran compiled by the Compaq compiler
on a computer which does not have this compiler installed, you will need
to install these libraries separately. See the documentation for the
compiler.
OLE paste links (the live, updating link to a data value in Aspen Properties
created when it is copied and pasted into an application which can support
such links, such as Microsoft Excel) will no longer be supported in the next
version. It will still be possible to copy and paste data, but without the live
link. This mechanism has been the source of problems, including slow
copy and paste of large amounts of data. There are other techniques (OLE
automation and Aspen Simulation Workbook) to link models to Excel and
other applications, and these techniques will remain available.

a result of some solver options that have become obsolete or have been
renamed. Saving the file from version V7.3 eliminates these warnings.
ACM Document (.acmd) files exported from previous versions of Aspen
Custom Modeler cannot be loaded in V7.3. Load these files into the
previous version and export them as .acmf files, which can then be loaded
into version V7.3.
ACM Library (.acml) files generated from previous releases of Aspen
Custom Modeler cannot be loaded in V7.3. Load the source .acmf version
of these files into V7.3 and regenerate the library file.
Aspen Plus .appdf files created with earlier versions of Aspen Plus are not
compatible with Aspen Custom Modeler V7.3 and higher. If you try to load
a physical properties file (.appdf) that was generated using an earlier
version of Aspen Plus, the following error message appears:
Aspen Properties abort
Unable to open properties definition file "x.appdf'
This file may need to be regenerated from a compatible version
of Aspen Plus.
After you receive this error, exit Aspen Custom Modeler before loading any
further simulations. To continue, you must regenerate the .appdf file using
Aspen Plus V7.3.
Aspen Properties .aprpdf files created with earlier versions of Aspen
Properties are not compatible with Aspen Custom Modeler V7.3 and
higher. If you try to load a physical properties file (.aprpdf) that was
generated using an earlier version of Aspen Properties, the following error
message appears:
Aspen Properties abort
Unable to open properties definition file "x.aprpdf'
This file may need to be regenerated from a compatible version
of Aspen Properties.
After you receive this error, exit Aspen Custom Modeler before loading any
further simulations. To continue, you must regenerate the .aprpdf file
using Aspen Properties V7.3.
To avoid this issue in future we recommend that you embed the Aspen
Properties .aprbkp file within your Aspen Custom Modeler simulation. To
do this, within Aspen Custom Modeler, in Simulation Explorer go to
Component Lists | Configure Properties and click Import Aspen
Properties file.
To correct an error that caused under-specification of PDE problems that
have complex boundary conditions, it has been necessary to change the
way that PDE boundary conditions are specified. In releases before V7.2 it
was necessary to define a boundary condition using a contiguous set of
nodes at the boundary, for example:
T([1:X.EndNode-1], 0) = 0.0;
T(0, [0:Y.EndNode]) = 0.0;
From V7.2 onwards, it is necessary to write boundary conditions using the
interior set, for example:
T(X.Interior, 0) = 0.0;
T(0, [0] + Y.Interior + Y.EndNode) = 0.0;
45
This change excludes node boundaries from the boundary condition. These
are now calculated from the other boundary values, and should not be
specified.
This change will only affect simulations that use 2-D or 3-D distributions,
and either one of the orthogonal collocation methods or one of the finite
difference methods with multiple sections. These simulations will be
overspecified if this change is not made. Other PDE simulations will
continue to work without the need for any changes.
The Automation Method Name() for the Variable object has changed. In
V7.1 and earlier it returned the full path of the variable which was the
same behavior as the GetFullPath() method. In V7.2 and later it returns
the name of the variable relative to its parent model or port. Check all
your scripts and VB programs where you may have used this method to
make sure that this change does not cause any problems.
The Homotopy option of the Standard non-linear solver was removed in
V7.2. Any simulations that use this option will automatically run with the
option switched off in Aspen Custom Modeler V7.2 and later.
Aspen Plus V7.3 will no longer support ACM models that were exported
from ACM prior to version 2004.1. If you have exported model MSI files
created prior to ACM 2004.1, you must re-export them in ACM 2004.1 or a
later version and re-install them into Aspen Plus. Re-exporting these
models in ACM V7.3 will have the added benefit of resolving known
defects or performance problems with these older models.
In V7.2 and earlier, when the Run, Step and Restart automation methods
were called the associated OnRun, OnStep and OnRestart scripts
were not run. They were only run when you ran these commands
interactively from the menus or toolbar. From V7.3, by default, these
scripts will be run when you use these automation methods. You can keep
the old behavior by adding an additional optional argument in the call to
these methods with a value of False.

In Version 2006 and later, the Out_Relief port was removed which made it
possible to connect multiple streams to the Out_V port to connect to relief
devices. It is also now possible to connect multiple streams to the Out_L port.
The Out_Relief port is still included in the model allowing simulations that
used the Out_Relief port to load correctly, but the problem will be
underspecified. Users must reconnect relief streams from the Out_Relief port
to the Out_V port in order to be able to run the simulation.

The results table for each layer contains the holdup in the layer: array

Compatibility Notes
Aspen Adsorption V7.3 can be installed and used at the same time as V7.2.
and other previous versions of Aspen Adsorption. However, please note the
following compatibility issues when upgrading your existing simulations to
V7.3:
The Export Compiled Flowsheet command lets you create a dll
containing a compiled form of an Aspen Adsorption flowsheet, and to use
this flowsheet in Aspen Plus. If you used this feature in a version before
V7.0, the compiled flowsheet may not run in Aspen Plus V7.3. You will
need to export the flowsheet again in Aspen Adsorption V7.3 before you
can use it in Aspen Plus.
55
The ImpEuler (11.1), VSIE (11.1) and Gear (11.1) integrators were old
implementations that have been superseded by the Implicit Euler and
Gear integrators that were introduced in the 12.1 release. They were
included in the 12.1, 2004 and 2004.1 versions to give time for transition
of existing simulations to the new integrators. These integrators have
been withdrawn from version 2006 and later. If you load a simulation that
uses one of these integrators it will automatically switch to using the
equivalent newer integrator, and will select option and tolerance values
that match the old integrator as closely as possible.
Aspen Adsorption Language (.ada) files generated using previous versions
of Aspen Adsorption are compatible with V7.3. You may see some warning
messages when loading .ada files created with previous versions. This is a
result of some solver options that have become obsolete or have been
renamed. Saving the file in Aspen Adsorption V7.3 eliminates these
warnings.
Aspen Adsorption Document (.adb) files exported from previous versions
of Aspen Adsorption cannot be loaded in version V7.3. Load these files
into the version they were saved from and export them as .ada files,
which can then be loaded into V7.3.
Aspen Plus .appdf files created with earlier versions of Aspen Plus and
Aspen Properties .aprpdf files created with earlier versions of Aspen
Properties are not compatible with Aspen Adsorption V7.3. If you try to
load a physical properties file (.appdf or .aprpdf) that was generated
using an earlier version, an error message such as the following appears:
Aspen Properties abort
Unable to open properties definition file "n2psa.appdf"
The file may need to be regenerated from a compatible version
of Aspen Plus
After you receive this error, exit Aspen Adsorption before loading any
further simulations. To continue, you must regenerate the .appdf or
.aprpdf file using Aspen Plus or Aspen Properties V7.3.
To avoid this issue in future we recommend that you embed the Aspen
Properties .aprbkp file within your Aspen Adsorption simulation. To do
this, within Aspen Adsorption, in Simulation Explorer go to Component
Lists | Configure Properties and click Import Aspen Properties file.
The Automation Method Name() for the Variable object has changed. It
used to return the full path of the variable which was the same behavior
as the GetFullPath() method. It is now changed to return the name of the
variable relative to its parent model or port. Check all your scripts and VB
programs where you may have used this method to make sure that this
change does not cause any problems.
In V7.2 and earlier, when the Run, Step, and Restart automation methods
were called the associated OnRun, OnStep and OnRestart scripts were not
run. They were only run when you ran these commands interactively from
the menus or toolbar. From V7.3, by default, these scripts will be run
when you use these automation methods. You can keep the old behavior
by adding an additional optional argument in the call to these methods
with a value of False.
56
3. After the script has converted the data, the Estimation Module block
disappears from the flowsheet.

Enhancements to HYSYS EO
Recalling cases in equation-oriented modeling is much faster: The
enhancement was tested with two online customer cases to show the
performance was 3-4 times faster.
Solver has been modified to let you seamlessly browse into and out of EO
flowsheets, while in SM or EO mode. Earlier versions would display a
message pop up and put the solver on hold.
New True to Apparent Transition handles transfer of stream values
across the EO flowsheet to Main Flowsheet boundary.
Corrections to enthalpy on Feed streams correctly handle mass enthalpy
balance on downstream block.
64
Absorber template is made available on the main flowsheet and allows you
to select and drop Rate Based Distillation UO on the main flowsheet.
Correct handling of pass thru streams, to automatically expose and
connect the right inlet port to the upstream block.
Measurements initialization values are retained upon resynchronization:
Earlier versions provided a work around through the Presolve2 scripting
handle, which is still available.

Also:
A new representation of the classic SLE flood correlation for packings
called SLEv73.
A new Aspen-Wallis packing pressure drop/flood correlation gives very
accurate estimates without the need for system or derating factors.
The option to add a high capacity Nye tray to standard sieve and valve
trays.
Reorganized tables with expandable columns.
Export flows, physical properties, and packing/tray geometry passed
directly to KG-Tower for many Koch-Glitsch packings as well as for
standard sieve and valve trays.
Export flows and physical properties passed to Fractionation Research,
Inc. DRP design/rating program.
Tables and graphs now take into account top down or bottom up stage
numbering.
Improved mass transfer correlations for rate-based separations that use
Pall rings, metal IMTP, or sheet metal structured packings.
70
71
Through the combinations of split basis, split type and split factor
specifications on each component, you have more direct control over
compositions and flows of product streams. Therefore you can achieve a
better approximation to your proprietary or non standard separation
processes.

Heat Transfer
There are two new options for specifying the heat transfer of a pipe segment
unit operation in Aspen Hydraulics: (1) specifying the total rate of heat
transfer into or out of the pipe segment and (2) specifying the outlet
temperature of the fluid leaving the pipe segment.
76
Internal Fittings
The Aspen Hydraulics pipe segment operation now supports internal fittings.
Each pipe segment has a Fittings section where you can specify a list of
fittings with given loss factors or define overall fitting loss factors for the
entire pipe. In addition, you can define a length multiplier for the pipe. When
these types of fittings are included, an equivalent pipe length is calculated
and reported.

The CDB improves the transition from the Appraisal & Conceptual Stage to
the front-end engineering design (FEED) Stage of a design project by allowing
the transfer of the project definition and a series of case files. You can save
frequently used preference information for key engineering parameters in the
design, such as compression ratios or recirculation rates, so that your
company can maintain and propagate its best practices
The CDB lets you use HYSYS & APEA models and templates at the beginning
of the design process, and provides a consistent framework for making
technical and commercial decisions at the early stages of plant or process
assessment.
78
Performance Improvements
It was well established that Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining could manage a
large number of assays more efficiently and accurately than could Aspen
HYSYS. However, it was a common observation that when a flowsheet had
only one assay, Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining cases were accurate but
very slow compared to Aspen HYSYS cases. In V7.3, we have significantly
reduced the computational time of Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining when we
have only one assay in flowsheet. The following table shows a comparison
between computational time for Aspen HYSYS V7.3 and Aspen HYSYS
Petroleum Refining V7.3 using our benchmark case.

The following picture shows how Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining is better
compared to Aspen HYSYS while working with multiple assays. As you
increase the number of assays in the Aspen HYSYS flowsheet the
computational time increases, whereas in Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining, it
remains constant.
79
Note: The new Aspen HTML Start Page requires a significant amount of
memory and should be disabled before using the reactor models.
Usability Improvements
Text and Excel reports are now available showing all important Refsys
properties of streams.
Petroleum Properties are available as a visibly separate group in the Variable
Navigator. The earlier Calculator group had a full list of all properties, making
it hard to find specific petroleum properties. The petroleum properties group
is also user-customizable. The same group appears in spreadsheet, AOS, etc.
The new Normalized Yields feature on streams, compares the flow of one
stream with respect to a referenced stream flow. This lets you quickly
calculate the yields of a column, reactor, subflowsheet, and so on, by
selecting the reference stream as the feed stream on each of the product
streams.
One could also compare these yields side by side by importing them into the
HYSYS workbook. When updating refinery planning models in Aspen PIMS
from Aspen HYSYS, these easily available yields will be very helpful. Users
can directly access these yield variables in the PIMS Support Utility rather
than indirectly calculating these values in a spreadsheet.
80
81
Hydrocracker
The purge flow can now be specified in the Calibration environment.
(Previously the option only functioned in the Simulation environment.)
The Hydrocracker will solve properly after modifying a feed while the unit
is in the Ignored state. In previous versions, this prevented the model
from solving.
82
FCC
The FCC calibration will now run with a recycle without first needing to run
a simulation case.
MW is now calculated for hypos of an effluent stream of the FCC when
Aspen Properties is used. In V7.2, MW was not calculated and the FCC
effluent stream would show as not solved when Aspen Properties were
used.
ZSM-5 catalyst factors have now been exposed so you can change how
ZSM-5 affects a catalyst mixture.
Changing the composition or biases of a feed type will now affect all data
sets. In previous versions, it would only affect the current data set; other
data sets would not accurately reflect the changes.
You can now use a refractive index from a stream when calculating the
aromatic content of a feed. However, this option should only be used
when the assay data for refractive index is high quality.
You can now modify 1, 2, or 3-ring methyls for a feed type. This is
important because the methyls become unconvertible material and the
default values may not accurately represent a feed.
83
Hydroprocessor BED
An isothermal option is added so you may model either adiabatic or
isothermal units.
Solver settings have been added so you have more control when solving
the models.
Isomerization
Octane is now reported for an isomerate product.
Solver settings have been added so you have more control when solving
the models.
Refining Utilities
The PIMS Support Utility
Scaling factors can now be provided to the shift vectors, as is possible in the
PIMS excel files.
The signs of the yields can be changed at the time of export. In PIMS the
product yields are typically negative, whereas HYSYS does not follow such a
convention.
The Common Model Environment (CME) model name can now be different
from the filename. (The model name is saved during mapping in PIMS and
Orion, so it is important to separate the file name and model name.)

preventing inconsistencies not checked for in previous versions. Some cases
which previously ran might now fail, but it should be clear which missing or
incorrect inputs are causing the problem.

The FiredHeater model is accessed via the standard HYSYS fired heater unit
operation by selecting the EDR-FiredHeater on the Design | Parameters tab.
This allows access to the EDR-FiredHeater tab. Fuel, flue gas, and up to 9
process stream connections are allowed. The link will automatically calculate
the lower heating value, carbon and hydrogen content of any connected fuel
streams. O2, N2, CO2, H2O (and optionally SO2 and Ar) are required in the
component slate to model the combustion.
A new feature for the V7.3 HYSYS-EDR links is that the full EDR-browser (as
seen in the stand-alone application) can be launched allowing detailed
changes to be made to the fired heater geometry.

Aspen MUSE
Product Description
Aspen MUSE performs detailed simulation of multi-stream plate-fin heat
exchangers made from brazed aluminum, stainless steel, or titanium. It can
be used standalone by the thermal specialist for exchanger design or as an
integrated product with AspenTech's steady-state process simulation
program, HYSYS.
When used as a stand-alone program, Aspen MUSE can be used for both first
pass calculations and detailed layer-by-layer analysis to evaluate new uses,
revamps, process conditions and fouling cases. It can also perform full
thermosyphon modeling, where one or more exchanger streams are subject
to natural circulation, as well as crossflow streams.
When integrated with HYSYS, Aspen MUSE provides engineers with the ability
to rigorously model processes that use multi-stream plate-fin heat
exchangers, such as LNG, ethylene, or air separation. It can be used to
identify capital saving opportunities in the overall process configuration.
Bottlenecks can be identified, process improvements modeled for various
process operating scenarios.
111
transfer data between organizations when one only has MUSE, and the other
only PlateFin.
MUI files are created in the same directory and with the same name as your
current case, but with the extension MUI instead of EDR.
Since PlateFin can handle more geometrically complex exchangers than
MUSE, there might be inconsistencies between the PlateFin and MUSE cases.
It is worthwhile checking that areas and number of layers for each stream are
as expected.
MUI files can only be generated for axial flow exchanger, not crossflow
exchangers.
Layer Schematic
New schematic was added to Input | Exchanger Geometry | Layer Types
tab.
The layer type schematic diagram is a simple representation of all layer types,
showing the location of all layer elements in each type as a series of colored
rectangles. It gives an accurate representation of the specified length of all
layer elements, but the width of the layer types is purely schematic. The
coloration is defined by stream number, as shown in the key. Distributor
elements are shown by rectangles with a cross, as in the following example.
113
UA Types
New input was added to Input | Program Options | Thermal Analysis |
Heat Transfer/Pressure Drop tab.
The simple UA value for an exchanger is the heat load divided by the mean
temperature difference between hot and cold streams. Since stream
temperatures depend not only on enthalpy (heat load) but also pressure,
some assumption must be made about how pressure varies between the inlet
and outlet. This assumption often has little effect on the result, but can be
important for two phase streams, particularly single component streams,
when hot to cold temperature differences are small.
Three options are offered for pressure variation:
with Temperature
with Enthalpy
Program (pressure varies with temperature when a stream is not the only
one of a given type (hot or cold), but with enthalpy if it is the only hot or
cold stream)
The real (calculated) UA value for an exchanger is based on individual stream
heat curves, not composites, and on the actual pressure variation of that
stream in the exchanger, not some artificial assumption.
The first two options for Simple UA pressure variation are new in PlateFin
V7.3.1. The third option is what was used in previous versions and in MUSE.
Variation of pressure with enthalpy is the assumption behind UA values in
HYSYS.
The simple UA value is important in Design calculations, which are based on
the composite hot and cold stream curves used in simple UA calculations.
For Simulation and Checking calculations, the UA method is used for the
composite curves which initialize the main calculation but should not affect
the final result. For reference purposes, however, in addition to the real
(calculated) UA value, two simple UA values are output (in the Solution
Overview), one corresponding to the initial duty, and one to the final duty.
Results Plots
Additional tabs added to the results sections to allow plotting of results:
Results | Calculation Details | Stream Details | Stream Plots
Results | Calculation Details | Stream Details | Layer Plots
Results | Calculation Details | Temperature and Qualities |
Temperature and Qualities Plots
Results | Calculation Details | Temperature and Qualities | Plots

Results | Calculation Details | Wall Temperatures | Wall

114
Stream Numbers
New input was added to Input | Exchanger Geometry | Distributors tab.
Redistributors and intermediate distributors are identified by a distributor
number, unlike main inlet and outlet distributors, which are identified by a
stream number. This means that a stream can in principle have multiple
redistributions.
The stream number must therefore be identified for each distributor. In
simple cases with a single redistributor, the distributor number defaults to the
stream number, so the distributor number and the stream number in it are
the same.
Stream Names
New input was added to Input | Problem Definition | Process Data tab.
You can enter a Stream name to help you relate stream number to process
fluids. The name is repeated on various other pages of input or output. When
data are imported from Process Simulators, names from the simulator should
be picked up automatically.
115
PlateFin-HYSYS Integration
This new integration with the HYSYS process simulator enables HYSYS users
to simulate a LNG unit operation using rigorous models provided by PlateFin.
116
Any relevant changes made to the Input information through the EDR
Browser take effect in the HYSYS simulation unless the facility for
disconnecting the PlateFin model from the HYSYS simulation is selected. After
it is disconnected, PlateFin can be used in the design mode or for making any
other off-line changes. The PlateFin model can then be reconnected to the
HYSYS simulation by updating the changes and clearing the check mark; thus
allowing the HYSYS user to continue with the newly designed or modified
plate-fin exchanger geometry.

Aspen Process Economic Analyzer.
Aspen In-Plant Cost Estimator.
Aspen Capital Cost Estimator.
Icarus Evaluation Engine.

Aspen Process Economic Analyzer can work from your sized equipment list or
can size equipment from your simulator-generated heat and material balance.
You can identify the impact of your scope definition on cost and profit early,
quickly, and inexpensively, thereby eliminating the need for expensive change
orders for revisions that typically arise during later design stages.
Pumps, storage tanks, and other offsite equipment are generally disregarded
during process simulation. These and other items can be easily added to your
scope definition using the graphical interface in Aspen Process Economic
Analyzer.

The input form in the GUI previously showed the default driver speed as
30 x Hz (1800 rpm in US basis). However, if speed was not specified, the
evaluation engine would design the pump for a higher speed if the head
requirements exceeded internally set limits. To better reflect this behavior
the default value was removed from the input form in the GUI. A
descriptive note was added to this field to indicate that the speed varies
with pump head. In the pump head input field, the descriptive note
typically provides the maximum head values for a particular speed.

disabled because templates do not contain any project components. In
addition, all icons such as Load/Map/Evaluate in the toolbar are disabled
since these operations do not have functions within template mode.
Further information on creating and importing templates into projects can

Note: Templates created in ACCE containing multiple contractors,
construction workforces, process control, and power distribution
hierarchies can be used when creating APEA projects. However, these
specifications will not be used and the default APEA contractor, PD, PC,
etc. specifications will govern instead.
Integrated sizing and costing users can select desired templates to be
used in via the new costing options form in Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS
before activating costing. The specified template will be used in creating
the costing case.
Note: Specific only to Integrated Sizing and Costing simulations, if
custom sizing methods are defined (via Excel spreadsheets) either in a
template or during Sizing step, the custom model will run silently in the
background and the results will be returned as defined in the spreadsheet.
This is different behavior vs. running custom models within the APEA GUI
where Excel will appear and run interactively for each custom model
defined/selected.

Due to this addition, there will be significant changes when an old project
having quoted item is opened in V7.3:
1. For old projects containing quoted items with Quantity Adjustment = N
and no installation bulks specified, the following will occur when
migrated to V7.3:
a. Number of identical items value will be migrated to the new
Quantity field and Number of identical items will be set to 1.
2. For old projects containing quoted items with the Quantity Adjustment

migrated to V7.3:
3. Number of identical items value will be migrated to the new Quantity
field and Number of identical items will be set to 1.
4. For old projects containing quoted items with Quantity Adjustment = Y
and any installation bulks specified, the following will occur when
migrated to V7.3:
5. Number of identical items value will be migrated to the new Quantity
field and Number of identical items will be set to ?. This will alert
user to specify Number of identical items since under these conditions,
the system cannot interpret the intent of the specifications. This will
alert users interaction is necessary to complete the evaluation.
6. Similar behavior will be observed when importing specs file.
Note: When migrating old projects containing Quoted Cost items into EE
V7.3, it is recommended users review the results for these items after the
upgrade. The inclusion of Quoted Cost items into the spreadsheet view can
facilitate this review.
Note: The Number of Identical items field will continue to work the same
way in V7.3/7.3.1 as prior versions. Consider the following examples:
Quoted Cost Item Case 1:
Number of Identical Items = 4
Quantity = 2
UOM = ITEMS (default)
Quantity Adjustment Option = blank (default) or Y
Material Cost per Unit = 100
Labor hours per Unit = 20
144
Economic Evaluation
Results:
Material Cost = 4*2*100 = 800
Labor Hours = 4*2*20 = 160
Installation Bulks (Material and Labor) = 4*Material Cost & 4*Labor Hours
The quantity field does not affect installation bulks material costs or labor
hours regardless of whether Y or N is specified for the Quantity
Adjustment Option.
Quoted Cost Item Case 2:
Number of Identical Items = 4
Quantity = 2
UOM = ITEMS (default)
Quantity Adjustment Option = N
Material Cost per Unit = 100
Labor hours per Unit = 20
Results:
Material Cost = 1*100 = 100
Labor Hours = 1*20 = 20
Installation Bulks (Material and Labor) = 1*Material Cost & 1*Labor Hours
When N is specified for the Quantity Adjustment Option, the system will
interpret both the Number of Identical Items and Quantity Field as 1. This
is consistent with the way the Number of Identical Items field has worked
in prior versions.
Quoted Cost Item Case 3:
Number of Identical Items = 1
Quantity = 2
UOM = ITEMS (default)
Quantity Adjustment Option = blank or Y
Material Cost per Unit = 100
Labor hours per Unit = 20
Results:
Material Cost = 2*100 = 200
Labor Hours = 2*20 = 40
Installation Bulks (Material and Labor) = 1*Material Cost & 1*Labor Hours
Quantity field only affects the material cost and labor hours and has no
effect on the installation bulks.

The shipping acceleration determined by the system are good for initial
estimates when no other information or data is available. To fine tune the
estimate using more accurate acceleration coefficients, it is recommended
that a naval architect be consulted to determine the particular barge type,
season, shipping route, and module height. The shipping accelerations
provided by the naval architect may be inputted into the acceleration
fields to override the defaults given by ACCE.
Note: In V7.3.1, for each defined truckable or bargeable sub-module a
separate weight report is now produced. The title of these sub-module weight
reports include the sub-module type and number (e.g. BRGM-1, BRGM-2,
BRGM-3, BRGM-4, TRMD-1, TRMD-2, TRMD-3, or TRMD-4).

Note: The recovery process is not real time so there may be a time lag
between a crash event and the point at which the recovery was last made.
Upon recovery, users should review the recovered project for any missing
changes/entries to the project. Missing items or specifications will have to be
re-entered in the recovered project. As mentioned, the default recovery is set
at 10 minutes, a shorter duration can be set if deemed necessary.

non-composite beams. Since the beams designed in the first case can
adequately support the floor load and result in a more economical design,
the beams designed in the second case should not be used in the Open
Steel Structure design and have been removed from the output report.
In addition, the column design does not include the additional weight from
the concrete floor slab. This results in undersized steel columns being
used to support the Open Steel Structure. This has also been corrected.
Sand Volume = [(Pipe Diameter + 0.5ft)*(Pipe Diameter + 2.0ft) Pipe Area] * Trench Length / 27.0, CY.
where 0.5ft = depth of sand below pipe, 2.0ft = 1.0ft on each side of
the pipe.
The sand bedding material cost has been updated to be consistent with
the civil bulk sand price used elsewhere in the system. Previously, sand
bedding material cost was set at approximately $2.7 per Cubic Yard. The
current civil bulk price for sand bedding material is app. $13 per Cubic
Yard.

The backfill volume calculation has been updated. The previous model
assumed the backfill volume was approx. equal to the [excavation volume
pipe volume]. The new model uses the following equation:
o
where 0.5ft = depth of sand below pipe, 2.0ft = 1.0ft on each side of
the pipe, 1.2 = Backfill compaction factor.
This update results in an increase in sand bedding material cost, but the
overall cost of sand bedding and backfill/compaction will be reduced due
to lesser volumes being required.

Pressure/Flow Summary
1. The headings of the Upstream Energy and Downstream Energy columns in
the Pressure/Flow Summary were changed to Upstream Enthalpy Flow and
Downstream Enthalpy Flow to be more descriptive.
2. When loading certain old cases, if the Pressure/Flow Summary is opened
without re-running the simulation, then these enthalpy flows will be
slightly different than those that appear in earlier versions of Aspen Flare
System Analyzer.

Path Substitution
Users can now edit paths of variables in the variable organizer. When a path
is edited, then the new variable referenced by the new path substitutes the
variable referenced by the original path. If the original variable is used in a
table, then the table is automatically updated and linked to the new variable.
Property Names
Some simulation and model variable property names have slightly changed to
make them more user-friendly.

Aspen Chromatography
Product Description
Aspen Chromatography is a comprehensive flowsheet simulator used for
design and simulation of batch and continuous chromatographic processes.
It addresses the needs of both engineers and scientists to model and
understand the separation and purification processes normally found in the
pharmaceutical, biotechnology, fine chemical and food product businesses.
Through the application of Aspen Chromatography, significant benefits in
design, yield, product quality, capacity and reduced operating costs are
possible.

The Automation Method Name() for the Variable object has changed. It
used to return the full path of the variable which was the same behavior
as the GetFullPath() method. It is now changed to return the name of
the variable relative to its parent model or port. Check all your scripts and
VB programs where you may have used this method to make sure that
this change does not cause any problems.
The Estimation Module formerly accessible through the Tools menu is
no longer supported and has been removed. This feature has long been
replaced with the Modeler products Estimation Tool. If you have an old
simulation file that uses the Estimation Module you can use the supplied
library script Convert_EstMod to transfer the information in your
estimation case defined in the Estimation Module to the Estimation Tools
also accessible from the Tools menu.
To convert from using the Estimation Module to the Estimation Tool,
open your simulation in a version earlier than V7.3, then use the script
Convert_EstMod located in the Aspen Chromatography library Script
folder.
To use the script:
1. Open the input file you want to convert.
2. Double-click the script in the library.
3. After the script has converted the data, the Estimation Module block
disappears from the flowsheet.
4. To view the experimental data, from the Tools menu click Estimation,
to access the new estimation system.
5. Save the input file.

Formatting notes/remarks
Multi-line text fields defined in the Excel workbooks using the Datasheet
Definer must be formatted using General, not Text. The Text format in Excel
cannot display more than 255 characters entries longer than this will be
displayed as #########. This was not an issue in Workbench which did
not use Excel to format the field.

Workspaces not backwardly compatible
Aspen Basic Engineering workspaces are not backwardly compatible with
previous versions. Once an existing workspace has been opened using V7.3 it
cannot be accessed using previous versions.
