Nanotechnology refers to the interactions of cellular and molecular

components and engineered materialstypically clusters of atoms,

molecules and molecular fragmentsat the most elemental level of
biology. Such nanoscale objectstypically, though not exclusively, with
dimensions smaller than 100 nanometerscan be useful by themselves
or as part of larger devices containing multiple nanoscale objects.
Nanotechnology is being applied to almost every field imaginable
including biosciences, electronics, magnetics, optics, information
technology, and materials development, all of which have an impact on
biomedicine.
Back in September 2004, the US National Cancer Institute (NCI)
launched the Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer to stimulate and
coordinate research in biology, engineering and materials science to
push cancer nanotechnology forward. Just over 2 years on, such
research is attracting increasing attention: in a round-up of last year's
breakthroughs in the burgeoning field of nanotechnology
from Forbesmagazine, anticancer nanoparticles featured in the top five.
Mediator : We have the honor to invite 3 bigwig to talk about their
opinion and experience about the cancer therapy. Not easy that a cancer
patient can restore from sickness, but Miss Sia is a success example
who steer clear the suffer of cancer. First, we would like to ask Miss Sia
who was received chemotherapy and nanotherapy and had to be
recovered to healt already.
Patient Miss Sia: I was once a cancer patient when I was 18 years old.
Encouragement of my family gave confidence to me to accepted the
reality. I decided to accept the cancer challenge so I started my
chemotherapy for cancer after checking. However, this therapy have

caused a reduction in white blood cell numbers. A rapid fall in white

blood cells may be vulnerable to a serious infection. Fatigue and flu-like
symptoms such as hair loss and blood clotting problems causing from
adverse reactions. I always felt very tired after doing normal and
everyday tasks. Besides, my hair began to fall after three weeks of the
first chemotherapy. I felt very inferior and started fear to others eyesight.
To prevent the risk of infection, I needed to take daily showers and
make sure that clothes and towels are washed regularly. Washing
hands regularly with soap and hot water every time after I going to the
toilet and before preparing food or eating meals. I also avoid contact with
people who have an infection, such as chickenpox or flu.
After a year, I never seen a change from myself and I felt very
depressed and frustrated. One day, the president of anti-cancer
association came to me and explained the nanotechnologys therapy.
The first benefit that helped me a lot after the therapy is Im not easy to
diarrhoea and constipation anymore. I felt Im getting better appetite
compare with before. I also solved the problem of short-term memory
and concentrate. This therapy helps to relieve symptoms and reduce the
suffering caused by cancer. And now I can sitting here to give a talk.
I found that many of the cancer patients were depressed and
always asked Why is me. I had embolden patients always build a
positive mind and not hesitate whether or not to accept the therapy. We
must trust the new technology can bring us to a advancement way. To
avoid from trouble in cancer, I had to advise and encourage all to make
a regularly medical check-up once or twice in a year.

Mediator : thank you miss Sia , now to gain a better understanding of

nanotechnology, we invite Dr.TOH the professor of chemistry and
chemical engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to
begin explain of this emerging field by learning about the science behind
it.

Dr.Toh : Nanoscale devices are one hundred to ten thousand

times smaller than human cells. They are similar in size to
large biological molecules ("biomolecules") such as enzymes
and receptors. As an example, hemoglobin, the molecule that
carries oxygen in red blood cells, is approximately 5
nanometers in diameter. Nanoscale devices smaller than 50
nanometers can easily enter most cells, while those smaller
than 20 nanometers can move out of blood vessels as they
circulate through the body.

Because of their small size, nanoscale devices can readily

interact with biomolecules on both the surface and inside cells.
By gaining access to so many areas of the body, they have the

potential to detect disease and deliver treatment in ways

unimagined before now.
But nanotechnologists think they have an answer for treatment as well,
and it comes in the form oftargeted drug therapies. If scientists can load
their cancer-detecting gold nanoparticles with anticancer drugs, they
could attack the cancer exactly where it lives. Such a treatment means
fewer side effects and less medication used. Nanoparticles also carry
the potential for targeted and time-release drugs. A potent dose of drugs
could be delivered to a specific area but engineered to release over a
planned period to ensure maximum effectiveness and the patient's
safety.
These treatments aim to take advantage of the power of nanotechnology
and the voracious tendencies of cancer cells, which feast on everything
in sight, including drug-laden nanoparticles. One experiment of this type
used modified bacteria cells that were 20 percent the size of normal
cells. These cells were equipped with antibodies that latched onto
cancer cells before releasing the anticancer drugs they contained.
Another used nanoparticles as a companion to other treatments. These
particles were sucked up by cancer cells and the cells were then heated
with a magnetic field to weaken them. The weakened cancer cells were
then much more susceptible to chemotherapy.
It may sound odd, but the dye in your blue jeans or your ballpoint
pen has also been paired with gold nanoparticles to fight cancer. This
dye, known as phthalocyanine, reacts with light. The nanoparticles take
the dye directly to cancer cells while normal cells reject the dye. Once
the particles are inside, scientists "activate" them with light to destroy the
cancer. Similar therapies have existed to treat skin cancers with light-

activated dye, but scientists are now working to use nanoparticles and
dye to treat tumors deep in the body.

TV presenter: Thank you Dr. Toh. The cancer patient always need
encourage and help to continue their life. So, I would like to invite the
prisedent of Malaysian Anti-Cancer Association which lead by Miss Low
to share their success in helping cancer patient.
The prisedent : Malaysian Anti-Cancer Association in May 2011
approved by the Malaysian Registrar of Societies, by the founder Prof.
Dr. C.C.Wong and several of anti-cancer traditional Chinese medicine
and Western medicine experts formed to cancer patients in Malaysia to
provide quality support services to ensure patients do not to face cancer
alone. Malaysia found that 30 000 annual new cases of cancer, the most
commonly diagnosed male cancer in Malaysia include colorectal cancer,
lung cancer, prostate cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, stomach, larynx and
liver cancer; as compared to female patients with breast, cervical cancer,
colorectal cancer, uterine cancer, leukemia and lung cancer. Malaysian
Anti-Cancer Association all services are free. All the donations are
entirely from enthusiastic public and supported by the government.
Government had appropriation funds approximately 4 thousand million
to resist this malignant.
We will set up a charitable foundation of cancer and cancer
recovery club, and establish branches at all cities and towns across the
country; Our services include: organizing public education activities to
support cancer research, home care services, assisted therapy
programs, psychological counseling, assistance in patients with medical
expenses, so that patients and their families will live more better.
