HARRIS FAMILY NOTES.

Sir Robert Drury of Hawstead, born by 1456-2/3/1535, P.C.C. Hogen 32, was the
first son of Roger Drury of Hawstead and Felice, daughter and heir of William
Denston of Besthorpe, Norfolk, parents also of William, who founded the family
of Drury of Besthorpe, and two daughters, Katherine wife of 1. Sir Henry le
Strange of Hunstanton, and 2. Sir Robert Ratcliff of Attleburgh, Norfolk; and
Felice, who married James Andrews of Baylham, Suffolk. He was named in many
commissions in the county of Suffolk from 1486 onwards. Sir Robert Drury's will
is very extensive and detailed, and mentions "Robert Alyngton my daughter
Ursula's son" as being under age at the time of writing. [Drury's sons William
and Robert are also mentioned]. The Ellesmere manuscript lists his children:
"William Drury, miles, Robertus Drury, miles, Domina [Anne] Jarmin, Domina
[Bridget] Jarningham, and Domina [Ursula] Allington."

He married, 7/3/1463/4, 1. Anne Calthorpe. Her royal lineage: Anne Calthorpe


was the daughter of Sir William Calthorpe, obit. 1476, Sheriff of Norfolk, and
Elizabeth Stapleton, 1442-1505; daughter of Sir Miles Stapleton,1408-1466, and
Catherine de la Pole. Miles Stapleton was the son of Cecily Bardolph, daughter
of Sir William Bardolph and Agnes de Poynings, and Sir Brian Stapleton.
Catherine de la Pole was daughter of Sir Thomas de la Pole, son of Michael de
la Pole, 1361-1410, and Lady Katherine Stafford. Michael de la Pole was the son
of Michael de la Pole and Catherine Wingfield. Lady Katherine Stafford was the
daughter of Sir Hugh Stafford, obit. 1386, and Lady Phillipa Beauchamp; the
daughter of Sir Thomas Beauchamp, 1313-1369, and Katherine Mortimer. Lady
Philippa was a direct descendent of Hugh de Beaumont, the first Earl of
Warwick, 1048-1119. Katherine Mortimer was the daughter of Roger Mortimer, 1st
Earl of March, obit. 1330. Sir Hugh Stafford was son of Sir Ralph de Stafford,
1301-1372, and Lady Margaret de Audley, daughter of Hugh de Audley, son of Hugh
de Audley and Isolde de Montimer of Wigmore, and Lady Margaret de Clare,
daughter of Gilbert de Clare, 9th Earl of Clare, 7th Earl of Hertford, and 3rd
Earl of Gloucester, and his 2nd wife, Joan Plantagenet, 1271-1305, daughter of
King Edward I and Eleanor of Castile.

He married, in 1530, at the age of 75+, 2. Anne Jernegan, daughter of Sir


Edward Jernegan. His will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury as
follows: 'The Testament of me Sir Robert Drury Knight ....... 1 May 23 Henry
VIII [1531] ....... to be buryed in the Chaunsell of seynt Mary Churche in Bury
by my First wife ....... my executors my son William and my son Robert ….... my
lady Greye my wife my daughter Jermyn and her husband to be as
supervysors ....... a thousande masses to be saide for the weale of my soule…
every man and his wife and wedow dwelling in Whepstede Lawshull Moche
Hornyngesherth, Brokleygh and Newton ....... to have eight pence ......'

Sir Robert Drury of Hawstead and Anne Calthorpe had issue, four daughters and
two sons:

1. Ann Drury. She married 1. George Waldegrave, obit. 8/7/1528, of Smallbridge,


in Bures St. Mary, Suffolk, son and heir of Sir William Waldegrave, will proved
6/3/1527/8, and Margery Wentworth, obit. 7/5/1540, sister of Henry Wentworth
and Nicholas Wentworth. George Waldegrave and Ann Drury were the parents of Sir
William Waldegrave, obit. 12/12/1553 [Coll., Peerage 236], who married Julian
Raynsford; their daughter, Dorothy Waldegrave, married Sir Arthur Harris, obit.
30/6/1597, of Woodham Mortimer; their son was Sir William Harris, who married,
6/5/1583, in St. Gabriel's, Fenchurch, Alice Smythe; their daughter was Dorothy
Harris, who married Robert Kempe. 2. Sir Thomas Jermyn, obit. 1548, to whom
John Jermyn of Depden. In more recent times, the Smythe family descended thus:
John Smythe of Corsham, ob. 1538, Wilts., son of John, son of William, married
Jane Brouncher. Their son, Thomas Smythe, obit. 1591, of Weston Hangar, Kent,
married Alice Judde, daughter of Andrew Judde, ob.1586, Lord Mayor of London,
and Mary Mervyn of Downs Court, Kent, daughter of Thomas Mervyn, obit. 1523,
and Alice Marshall of Beverley, Yorkshire. They were the parents of the above
mentioned Alice Smythe and Sir Thomas Smythe, and also of Sir John Smythe of
Weston Hangar, who married Elizabeth Fineaux; their son being Thomas Smythe,
Lord Viscount Strangeford, who married Barbara Sydney, daughter of Robert
Sydney, Ist. Earl of Leics.; she married 2. Sir Thomas Culpeper, Governor of
Virginia.

[Sir Roger Wentworth, obit. 24/10/1482, m. Margery Despencer, b. ante 2/3/1423;


to them: 1. Sir Philip Wentworth, ex. 18/5/1464, m. Mary Clifford, obit.
4/10/1478, and had issue: Sir Henry Wentworth, Sheriff of Yorkshire, who m.
Anne de Saye of Sawbridgeworth, daughter of Sir John de Saye and Elizabeth
Cheney, daughter of Lawrence Cheney of Ditton, Cambridge [Magna Charta
Sureties]; their son being: Sir Richard Wentworth, obit. 17/10/1528, who m.
Anne Tyrrell of Gipping, daughter of Sir James Tyrrell, son of Sir William
Tyrrell, 1430-14/41471, of East Horndon, who m. Margaret Darcy, and Anne
Arundel, daughter of Sir John Arundell of Lanherne, Cornwall, and Elizabeth
Morley, daughter of Lord Thomas Morley, 1394-6/12/1435, and Isabel de la Pole,
1398-8/2/1467, daughter of Michael de la Pole, 1361-1410, and Lady Katherine
Stafford, as above. Sir Henry Wentworth and Anne De Saye were also the parents
of Margaret Wentworth, who married Sir John Seymour. 2. Henry Wentworth, who m.
Elizabeth Howard, obit. 22/3/1482. They had issue: a. Margery, as above, m. to
George Waldegrave; b. Henry Wentworth, who m. Anne Hammond, parents of Sir John
Wentworth, -1588, who m. Elizabeth Heydon, sister of Robert Heydon, see below.
c. Nicholas Wentworth, who m. Joan Josselin, obit. 1569, dau. of George
Josselin and Philippa Bradbury; Nicholas and Joan were the parents of Joan
Wentworth who m. Geoffrey Gates.

2. Bridget Drury. She married John Jernegan, son of Sir Edward Jernegan. Their
son, George, married Eleanor Spelman, daughter of Sir John Spelman, and sister
of Elizabeth Spelman - 'Here by underneath, lyeth Edmund de Grey, Esq. who
married Elizabeth ye dowghter Of Sir John Spelman, Knt., and deceased this
Present life the 20th day of Auguste, 1548' - issue: a. Robert Jernegan, who
married Catherine Cannon, b. Walter Jernegan, who married Ann Jennys, c. John
Jernegan, who married Catherine Brooke, d. Henry Jernegan, who married
Elizabeth Browne, e. She married Thomas Jernegan, who married Elizabeth
Thompson.

3. Ursula Drury. She married Giles Allington: 'Sir Gyles Alington, Knighte,
sonne and heyre of Sir Gyles Alington, Knight, died 22 August, ano 1586, and in
the year of his age 86. He first married Ursula, daughter of Sir Robert Drury,
Knighte, & by her had issue Robert. Secondly he maried Alice, daughter & heyre
of John Midleton, Esquier, before wife of Thomas Elrington, Esquier.' 'Here
under lyeth buryed Sir Gyles Alington, Knight, who died — Aprilis ano 1522. He
maryed Marye the only daughter &, heire of Sir Richard Gardener, Knight, and by
her had issue Gyles, George, William, John, Anthonie, Roberte, Richarde,
Awdrye, Joanne, & Marye' [extracts Coles MSS., Brit. Mus.].

4. Elizabeth Drury. At the end of a Latin Bible, of the version of St. Jerome,
a vellum MS. in the library of Christ's college, Cambridge, F. 1.5. - John
Botteler [Woodhall line], the son of Philip Botteler and Elizabeth his wif
doughter of Robt Drury knyght and Anne his wif doughter of Philip Calthorp
knyght and Elizabeth his wif doughter of Miles Stapilton knyght was borne the
morow next aft saynt Bartholemew's daie aboute xi & on of the clok at none A°
Dni MCCCCCxiii. To add: Elizabeth Drury, who married John Botteler, son of
Philip Botteler, son of John Botteler of Woodhall and Dorothy Tyrrell of
Gipping, daughter of Sir William Tyrrell and Margaret Darcy; daughter of Sir
Robert Darcy of Maldon. Elizabeth Drury and John Botteler had issue, Elizabeth,
married to Henry Gyll [Chauncey, Historical antiquities, 1826].

Botteler: Addiscombe House, formerly called Adgecome and Adscomb, but more
anciently by its present name, is situate about a mile and a half from the
town, on the road to Wickham, and was formerly the residence of a family of the
name of Heron. Thomas Heron, Esq., succeeded, in 1514, to the property of his
father, an opulent citizen of London, and most probably erected the ancient
mansion of Adgecome. Here he died in Oct. 1544, leaving issue by his wife
Elizabeth, daughter and co-heir of William Bond [arg. a boar's head erased or.,
muzzled, gu. between two hedgehogs]; Master of the Household of Henry VIII:

1. Nicholas Heron, who married Mary Poole. [Census of 1624-5 Robert Poole was
living at James City; listed as 'head' at the James City Corporation, called
Isle of Wight in 1637. Purchased 300 acres at Blount Point, southernly on the
Warwicke River, by 1627. William Harris, Planter, of Warwick River, 50 acs.
about 2 mi. below Blount Point, W. upon land of sd. Haris, extending E. 25 po.,
S. on the maine river & N. into the maine woods. Lease 20/11/1628. Hotten's
'Emigrants' - William Claiborne - 500 acres at Blount Point.

2. Mabel Heron, who married George Botteler [Butler], ob. ante 31.1.1594, of
Burch Hall, great-grandparents of Elizabeth Butler, who married William
Claiborn; niece of Capt. Nathaniel Butler, who later sat on the Council of
Virginia with William Claiborne, and John and Thomas Butler of Clairborn's Kent
Island settlement. [George Butler, ob. 1551, of Shambrooke, Beds., married Mary
Throckmorton, to them John Butler, who married 1. Mary Gedge, w. of Christopher
Harris, and 2. Cressitt St. John; to them John Butler, -22/11/1632, who married
Jane Elliot, daughter of Edward Elliot and Jane Gedge; to them Elizabeth
Butler, as noted; Heralds' Coll. i. v.].

3. Elizabeth Heron, who married Vincent Harris, son of William Harris of


Southminster; son of John Harris. Vincent Harris and Elizabeth Heron were the
parents of Sir Thomas Harris of Maldon, who married Cordelia Gyll of Wyddial,
Herts.

5. Sir William Drury of Hawstead. He married 1. Joan Seymour/Semer, daughter of


William Seymour, who died in childbirth, 16/8/1517/8; and married 2. Elizabeth
Soothill, -19/5/1575, daughter and co-heir of Henry Soothill and Joan Empson.
His daughters by Elizabeth Soothill were a. Ann Drury* wife of Sir Christopher
Heydon, 1519-10/12/1579, of Baconsthorpe, Norfolk. b. Mary Drury, married 1.
Richard Corbet, to whom Mary Corbet, who married her second cousin, George
Waldegrave. c. Frances Drury, wife of James Hobart of Hales Hall in Loddon,
Norfolk. d. Bridget wife of Henry Yelverton of Rougham, Norfolk. e. Dorothy,
wife of Robert Rokewood of Coldham Hall in Stanningfield, Suffolk. f.
Elizabeth, wife of Sir Robert Drury of Rougham,Suffolk, her fourth cousin twice
removed, to whom Robert Drury, who married Audrey Rich, daughter of Richard
Rich, Baron of Leez. * Anne Drury, 19/8/1523-5/9/61, and Christopher Heydon
were the parents of Sir William Heydon, 30/10/1540-1594, who married, 1560,
Anne Woodhouse, b. 1541, daughter of Sir William Woodhouse, 1498-22/11/1563,
and Elizabeth Calthorpe, 1528, who married 2., see below, Sir Drewe Drury. Sir
Drewe Drury and Sir Amias Paulet were keepers of Mary Queen of Scots. Contrary
to Hollywood history Amias Paulet was urged in writing to secretly murder Mary,
so as to not to involve Elizabeth in signing her execution warrant, yet,
risking his own life, he had the courage to write an instant rejection, the
memorable: 'God forbid I should make so foul a shipwreck of my conscience.'
Amias Paulet had first married Elizabeth Blount, daughter of Walter Blount of
Blount Hall. By a second wife, he was father of Joan Paulet, who married Robert
Heydon, son of the above Sir William Heydon and Anne Woodhouse.

[Joan Paulet = great-niece of John Paulet, 2nd. Marq. Winchester].

6. Sir Robert Drury of Edgerley. He married 1. Elizabeth Brudenal [Coppinger's


Manors of Suffolk, vol. xii. p. 35]; daughter of Edmund Brudenell Esq., Lord of
Raans, and Jane Hawkins of London; to whom:

Anne Drury. She married Robert Woodlief of Aylesbury and Peterley, Esq. [Hist.
Parl. Trust], the son of Nicholas Woodliffe [Vis. Bucks., 1566; Harleian vol.
58, p. 328]. Robert was previously married to Jane Smythe, daughter of Roger
Smythe. Anne Drury and Robert Woodlief were the parents of Drewe Woodlief, who
married, 30/11/1581, Katherine Duncombe, daughter of John Duncombe of Moreton
in Dinton. Drewe is commonly supposed to be the father of Captain John
Woodlief.
He signed an agreement in 1619 to settle an 8000 acre plantation in Virginia to
beknown as Berkeley Hundred. He secured a patent from Sir George Yardley for
550 acres in the Great Weyanoke where he established Sion Hill. His land
bordered the James River between Jordan's Journey on the east and included the
present Evergreen on the west. He briefly returned to England in 1624. In 1632,
his son, John, was given a guardian, the burgess, Gabriel Holland, Mary being
deceased; and his daughter, Anne Woodlief, Woodlase in the 1624 Census, lived
with 'kinsman' Captain Thomas Harris and his wife from the age of 7. Captain
John Woodlief transferred his land to his son 24/8/1637.

Sir William Drury. Lord Justice Governor of Ireland; he married Margaret


Wentworth, daughter of Sir Thomas Wentworth and Margaret Fortescue, son of the
above Sir Richard Wentworth and Anne Tyrrell. She married 2. Sir James Croft of
Weston.

Sir Drewe Drury. 1518-1617. Usher of the Privy Chamber to Queen Elizabeth and a
keeper, as said, of Mary, Queen of Scots. He married 1. Elizabeth, daughter of
Sir Phillip Calthorpe and Amy Boleyn, aunt of Queen Anne Boleyn, 2. Catherine,
daughter of William Finch of Lynsted.
