Quezon City Memorial Complex

Implementing Holistic Approach in a Columbarium and Crematorium Facility for

Less Fortunate
I Introduction
1.1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In every urban areas in the Philippines, space is important. And every day hundreds
of deaths occurs but cemeteries stays stagnant. One of the problems of in the
Philippines are lack of spaces in cemeteries for increasing percentage of dead
persons. And it is difficult to develop new cemetery because of the space it
required. For a long time, the Catholic Church in the Philippines frowned on
cremation. But with increasing burial costs and changing lifestyles, more and more
Filipinos now choose to be practical and avoid tradition. And the Church no longer
objects. Cremation in some urban areas costs thousands of pesos that some people
cant afford. And while these are still higher than some of the rates offered by
various funeral homes that cater to the needs of poor Filipinos, the issue of
decreasing space in public cemeteries continuously crops up.
Recently, Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista announced the plan of the local
government to establish a city-owned crematorium and columbarium to serve the
needs of those who cannot afford the costs in private funeral houses. The
implication of the study is to provide a cremation and columbarium facility that
can occupy the needs of the growing population of the Quezon City through a
holistic approach that can make the project efficient and give more peaceful
ambiance for mourning of the families of the clients. Also, the study aims to be a
good and reliable proof of an innovative and sustainable building for other aspiring
researchers with the same study. This development will bring a new approach in
developing crematory in modern days for growing population with an integrated
renewable system and beneficial services and facilities for people that has more
necessities but less fortunate.
The purpose of the study is to develop a centralize memorial complex that
implemented with a holistical design on the spaces to connect the users to the
building itself. And also to maximize the full potential of a columbarium facility
that would bring an impact not only to the locality but also to other foreign that
will try to use the facility.
1.2.STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Quezon City is one of the cities that make up Metro Manila, the National
Capital Region of the Philippines, located on the island of Luzon. It is most
populous city in the country, and the largest city by the area in Metro Manila. In
2010, Quezon Citys population is estimated to have grown to 2,960,627. And as in
present day, there were many highland citizens mostly migrating on urban areas,
the population growth increases together with the death rates around the city.
Problems occur like lack of spaces on cemeteries because of growing deaths but no
additional cemeteries or lacking on future developments.
Nowadays, some cemeteries are increasing their rental fees to give way to
others when they cant pay the amount to accommodate other clients. Some

problems in the present days occur to prove that cemeteries today are no longer the
same than its in the concept of developing it. Some are bewildered by the sounds
and sights that assail into their senses. The hustle of the crowd, the din of traffic,
the missing markers and crosses, the dusty and muddy roads and walkways, but
most of all, the overcrowding that robs whatever atmosphere of privacy is left
within. Overcrowding is no longer the monopoly of the metropolis alone. It has
also extended to its burial grounds. Like the growing city, a cemetery has to
expand its boundaries or suffer consequences of lack of burial spaces.
People think cremation for a variety of reasons: philosophical, religious, and even
for environmental concerns. Others make the decision because cremation is more
natural and practical.
The study conducted would help the Quezon Citys urban development
including memorial developments that will carry the problems with a well manage
solutions and technologies for the community of the city. By this, the community
of Quezon City will produce a holistically coordinated that will endure the peak of
the development in the said proposal. Also by this development, the city will have
a distinguished area or development for mourning services and facilities that caters
middle class and less fortunate communities of the area. One of the focus of the
development is to create a balance energy distribution on buildings through
renewable resources that can solve the countrys growing problem on carbon
emission.
With the study, I can proclaim that in such time physical attributes to the
city of Quezon will improve self-sustain developments. So, intellectual solutions
for the physical renovations will or should be occur to the development for some
holistical development project, it should be properly allocated and more visual to
create an innovative approach with the possible and future clients for the given
project.
1.3. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
It is very important that people seeking funeral services can understand the
industry. The propose development promotes to develop knowledge and
information to the public about funerals and its functions, services and facilities,
and responsibilities to the industry. It also seek an innovative solutions to have less
energy consumption so that the cost on services will be essential to the less
fortunate of the community of Quezon City. The development also signifies the
importance of the proposed memorial complex to the industry of mortuary and
funeral services. it is to develop structures or complex for the mortuary industry
that will house complete facilities regarding death care services. The proposal also
signify the importance of the study to the field of architecture and how it will help
to innovate a reliable design solution for poor citizens in Quezon City regarding on
taking funeral services on a low cost prices. It is to provide a new design solution
for such a development that focuses not only the energy consumption but also the
services it caters for less fortunate as a whole and holistical approach. It will
develop a new trend and application of architecture for memorial developments
and to be reliable source of reference for others with the same study.
This proposal would give credence in the field of architecture since this will
be a green sustainable and eco-friendly development promoting self-sustain and

renewable energies making the outmost function. This proposed development will
also be a reliable source of research base on its kind of usage and systems for
others in the same interests of line of developments to provide solutions and
answers to the community.
1.4. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The main goal of the proposed memorial complex development is to apply
the Holistical Design approach on a public facility that means to lessen its noise
and provide a well defined columbarium and crematorium suitable for users. It will
also centralize death care services and facilities for less fortunate. Objectives of the
development will be:
To achieve a holistic approach in designing for a better ambiance and
peaceful mourning
To provide a well defined facility accustomed on specific users and lessen
common problems on a public development
To integrate renewable energy resources to be a self-sustain design system
for balancing of energy consumption usage in the development. Integrating
different design strategies for the reduction of energy like cost-effective
strategies through Energy-Efficiency.
1.5. SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
SCOPE:
The research study on Quezon City Memorial Complex aims to address the
development of the whole demand for mortuary industry that will focus on less
fortunate through designing a structure of it. The study consist of strategies, plans,
and most especially consist of design approach that is applicable for the propose
Quezon City Memorial Complex that caters the design solution in aiming for the
needs of the citizens and decreasing the developments energy usage in a spiritual
and holistical way or as a whole. The research study will modify the proposed
development in terms of holistic or space-maximized plans by designing facilities
that is equip with renewable resources and wide range implementation on the given
approach to lessen and decreases the usage of the facilities in the development and
gain a self-sustain structures that will be needed to cater the needs of less fortunate
community in Quezon City in terms of low cost services. The spaces of the
proposed development will be design to properly cater the issues and need of a
memorial complex development but not with an ordinary vernacular design
integration but to blend and cope up to become one with the flow of environment.
In the other half, other spaces and services will accommodate the users primary
need. The on-site energy resources of renewable energies will not be separated to
the development but to blend them and add appropriate services that will add
aesthetical value to the development.
DELIMITATION:
The said proposed development will have the possible although the
development will be the first memorial complex of a development that uses a
holistical and self sustain building design at the Philippines it will said as the
strategy and style of design will be precisely and have the possibility to create a
new, innovative approach and self-sustain development that will be the possible
solutions of present issues of energy consumptions. The approach for the

development will interact those environmental and energy issues basically human
causes. By this, the concept and the capability to create a more tangible design
commonly the participation and considering the environmental issues will set the
development lessen or decrease the possibilities to imply those issues. The
development also make the area to be visually and biologically attractive thus the
development aesthetics will make the concept and totality of the design strategy be
more essential in many aspects like in energy issues and environmental services for
human needs. In the weakness or negative side, the proposed development will
systematically planned in the way that the discrete elements will not be consider
thus it will be work strategically and constituted at once.
1.6.JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY
The Quezon City Memorial Complex will be the first modern public
memorial complex with the application of Holistic and Sustainable Building
Design and caters low cost services for less fortunate who cant afford recent
crematory services on private developments. Establishing this proposed facility
will answer and give solutions on different situations and problems some of the
communities and countries facing right now like too much energy consumptions,
global warming, human traffic, noise pollution, crowded developments, high cost
facilities, lacking of burial spaces due to increasing death rates, etc. applying
sustainable application systems on this development will greatly help the facility
on its aims for low cost services. On that count, the services of the development
will also decrease because it is no longer using different energy system that can
cater the need of less fortunate since the development focuses on people who cant
afford high cost services. This development will be a modern technologies with a
self-sustain energy system servicing in a low cost value for public usage.
This research also implements the usage of advanced technology to become
more sensitive on the environment and would contribute in its unique way of
preventing the damage acquired by other structures. Finding ways and technical
solution to provide self-sustaining facility were morphing itself with the nature and
environment utilizing every aspect possible benefitting the development to
function at its best. Also the Quezon City ordinance about green building design
will come up with the sustainable design implementation to provide more
environmental aesthetics and ambiance that is more needed of the families
mourning and reconciliation on their loved ones, some peaceful and spiritual
ambiatic place to renew the real concepts of the development like cemeteries and
crematorium.
The challenge to bringing out the best design solution to signify the
architectural ability to sustain the developments needs, commends the creation of
this research study. This intensive research enables to set higher views of this study
that must account the integrity of its purpose but to further explain the possible
design outcome of the development that would solidify the dynamic originality of
the proposed study.

when greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, water vapour, nitrous oxide, and methane)
trap heat and light from the sun in the earths atmosphere, which increases the
temperature.
Green Ecologically aware; natural; conservational; environment friendly
Renewable Energy is generally defined as energy that comes from resources
which are naturally replenished on a human timescale such as sunlight, wind, rain,
tides, waves and geothermal heat. Renewable energy replaces conventional fuels in
four distinct areas: electricity generation, hot water/space heating, motor fuels, and
rural (off-grid) energy services.
Self-sustainability - A system is self-sustaining (or self-sufficient) if it can
maintain itself by independent effort.
HolisticOPERATIONAL
Mourning - In the simplest sense, synonymous with grief over the death of
someone.
Urban is characterized by higher population density and vast human features in
comparison to areas surrounding it. Urban areas may be in cities, towns, or
conurbations, but the term is not commonly extended for rural settlements such as
villages and hamlets.
