Glazier Clinic Chicago 2/4 -2/6/10

Ashland University Head Coach Lee Owens (lowens1@ashland.edu)

The four biggest points I got from Coach Owens was:

1) When changing to the spread he still wanted that downhill attitude run. The
blocking remains the same whether the play is run from under center or from
gun.
2) If personnel is a problem then have players learn multiple positions. At Ashland
they have Fullbacks and H Backs (TE) grouped together and Running backs and
Slot receivers grouped together.
3) You can’t scout game tempo from film.
4) Run Reverses using your best run play as the fake.

CHANGING TEMPO

NO PLAY. Using a long count to get the defense to jump.

– Send in personnel package without play. No player is thinking about

assignment or getting off the ball.
– Cue the sideline ref. Stand behind him and “work him”

NO PLAY. Scan.

– The coach sends in a play, try to get the defense to jump or tip off the blitz.
QB checks with coach. Coach will point to tell QB to run the play called. QB
never checks the play, the coach does it!!

Three tempos used

– SUGAR : used as the base tempo using wristband calls for entire offense

“Easy. Easy” alert call to check to quick game or get out of a bad play.

– BONZAI : TEN plays (three run and 7 pass)

– INDY: extremely fast, stay in same personnel package

USE ONE WORD CUES
Avoid long developing plays (5 step passes)
1) POWER (or your best inside run)
2) SWEEP (or your best outside run)
3) SPRINT (or boot)
4) QUICK GAME

Mix in colors for directions, buzz words for plays, and dummy numbers

They combine favorite motions and formations into one word instead of two.

MISDIRECTION PASS

Mississippi State WR coach Mark Hudspeth

The biggest points I got from Coach Hudspeth was:

1) QB Veer or Midline read: don’t worry about angle of shoulders, where the key
is leaning. The read key should be “Can the defender tackle the RB??”
2) Sometimes you may need to get into two back set to get bigger pass plays.
3) When running Speed Option, have the edge blocker step at the DE (Read
Key) then release down to LB. This will make the DE think he being reached
and will widen him and provide for an easier read for the QB.
4) QB Wedge. Do not run this play using a quick snap. Have the QB wait and
make sure the OL is disciplined to stay in their stance (10 seconds). QB waits
for the first DL to relax, THEN snap the ball and attack that gap!

No Huddle Communication

Reasons for No Huddle

1) It gives you (the coach) the ability to change the play to a better one. Coach
makes the checks, not the QB. It is your job, not the QB’s!!
2) Amount of “running”
WR runs 40 yards to and from the huddle for average of 50 plays.

40 x 50 = 2000 yards during the course of the game

OL runs 12 yards to and from the huddle for an average of 50 plays.

12 x 50 = 600 yards during the course of the game

3) High Tempo of practice is better preparation for the players.

Tempos

1) LOOK This is always the tempo unless there is a different signal by the coach.
QB will call cadence then wait for coach to change the play or “points”
to tell QB to run the original play.
2) POINT This tells the QB to run the original play signaled by the coach.
3) FREEZE Never run a play. There will be a dummy play attached to FREEZE
signal (Which is coach rubbing hands together)
4) NASCAR Limit this tempo to 8 total plays using only one word.

MSU signals plays by:

One coach to signal the formation

One coach to signal play

One coach to signal dummy call

QB calls HIKE when

1) Timing is involved in the play.

2) There is motion.
3) The play in under center.
4) NASCAR tempo

CENTER calls HIKE for all other plays!

Developing your No Huddle system.

Make sure to have LIVE words, TAG words, and DUMMY words. Limit DUMMY words
to less than three.

Chip/Cleveland is the audible call for Counter.

Chip is one syllable which could mean left. Cleveland is two syllables which could mean
right.

For Nascar tempo, use numbers for the audible. All odds could be pass and all evens
could be run.
